IBM Model M keyboards use mechanical switches - it is a high-end keyboard technology. I use a Das Keyboard II which employs mechanical switches and is similar to the Model M in sound and feel (it is not as loud). A keyboard with mechanical switches is much louder than one of the typical consumer keyboards on the market - it has wonderful sound feedback. Keyboards with mechanical switches last much longer than traditional membrane keyboards. The Das Keyboard II is an ultra precise keyboard and provides superior tactile feedback, I imagine the M is similar since the technology is similar. The M keyboards are more than 'antiques'.

Here's my keyboard:

You really have to use a keyboard with mechanical switches before you can pass judgment. -
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
Those mechanical boards are indeed real nice. I've got a unit from an IBM 5150 which I'd love to use, but it's electrically incompatible with PS/2 jacks and nobody makes a blasted adapter.
-
So, did that come standard without key markings?
-

Yup, it's part of the experience. I have been typing on this keyboard for about two months now and I rarely ever look down anymore, because it's useless to do so.
As a result I have become more productive because I know where all the keys are intuitively. It also doesn't matter if it's nighttime either - who needs backlit keyboards? You can see the keyboard on the website:
http://daskeyboard.com/
It's a bit pricey but worth every penny. -
YES! A Daskeyboard! Fantabulous choice, sir. You have great taste
.
@Others: Typing on a normal keyboard just doesn't... feel right (anymore). I feel like there's something missing. Like when I type on my laptop keyboard, I say to myself "this feels weird". To think that the M was gifted to me - I'm very grateful (= -
Yeah, I've been trolling NBR for quite a while you know.
-
nice keyboard ))
-
I have a Black IBM M keyboard..have always used it, quite easy to use and nice, but id also like a cool gimmicky keyboard with inbuilt lighting
.
BTW what is that Notebookreview thing in the top right of the pic? -

Thanks for the compliments. Amol, G-X, you have an awesome keyboards too.
I don't know anyone in real life who has an M. I admit those backlit keyboards are tempting.
I really enjoy using the Das Keyboard II. It feels and sounds fantastic - as I said, it's the most accurate and precise keyboard I have ever used - and it also helps out my touch typing skills. It's totally blank as you noticed; I no longer look down at the keyboard and search for keys because I know where they are by feel. My productivity has gone up since I got this keyboard - it 'trains' you. It is definitely not an inexpensive keyboard but my view is that if there are three things you should spend a lot of money on: the mouse, screen, and keyboard. Those are the devices you use to interact with the computer and very important.
Edit: Oh and that NotebookReview.com thing is a tile coaster. You can get them from the Cafepress NBR store:

hehe
As you can see from my pics, i have a cheapo Logitech classic 200...
But yes I agree that a good keyboard + screen + mouse are very important, I love my razer diamondback
Also I am very tempted by the NBR coaster and mug...
international deliveries?

Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
My computer is so old it doesn't even have a dvd writer!
-
-
Thats a sweet monitor and not to shabby of a laptop either
-
Nice mouse too...nice and simple set up, i like
But no speakers?
-
Nope, no speakers, the built-in ones are good enough. Simple is the key word for me. I almost hate my external LCD b/c of all the extra space it takes up and the extra cables.
Hopefully when I graduate in May I can replace my old desk with a solid cherry one with a marble top, been hunting at all the antique furniture stores but none of them I have found are what I want or in mint condition, oh well, the hunt continues. -

sprtnbsblplya: SUUHWEET monitor! How large is that exactly? x)
-
Just a 22" LCD.
The tiny 14.1" T61 beside it makes it look a lot bigger than it actually is. -

Don't sweat it. Just shows that you know how to take care of your equipment. -
Flamenko, You must really like dell
Two M1330's .. Are both with SSD by the way because you seem to like SSD..

Man that's freaky. I took Age of Empires 2 out of my cupboard. I haven't played it in years and then come and see that screen shot. I went to install age of empires 2 on my new rig, but it dosen't work because of Direct Draw? anyway, nice setups guys..
I might update mine soon. -
I wanna play AOE II also...I lost my copy so long ago
-
did you try running as admin and compatibility mode? It works for me
-
Um... here's mines '~"
You can tell I don't use that monitor a lot xD
-
I really like our setup. It's so clean and bright. And the light colored desk compliments the white walls.
-
Lol FFXI? Is that a Taru? I don't know how you spell it but you know what I mean.
.
Nice Wallscroll
-
heheh yea
it is a Taru, drawn by a friend. It was pretty nice so I printed it out and turned it into a poster
Sounds like Amol played it before too, with all those Japanese-style smiley face under your NBR linux team sig xD -

I like your Sony SZ(or TZ?). You're very organized!
-
What monitors are those?
-
Love the screen arrangement.
-
Wow, didn't realize it was that dirty until it took the pic, lol.. -

Left: Philips 170B4 (17"). The color is kinda crap.. even though its 700:1 Contrast.. I can never get it adjusted so that photoshop color = print out color
Right: Dell Ultrasharp 2407FP (24"). Shipped to me via Purolator, 0 dead pixel (was rather surprised). It's also a revision 4 so... I'd say its pretty mature in terms of the hardware, and I have to say I haven't found anything bad at all about it. 100 points if its out of 100... well maybe -1 because it is a little bit more pricy but... if you phone up to dell, they'd give you a discount
(at least I got 100 bux off ^_^)
-
By the way, hi everyone! I'm new here. That's an Averatec 3200 series and a Compaq Presario v5000 on my desk there. Underneath I've got a Dell Optiplex GX270. I don't own any machines that use DDR2, so I do suppose my friends are right when they make fun of my "old crap." I love it anyways though. -
I like the chair and the desk!
-
Personally, I rather like the easy button
And the shark, of course.

Pretty much how it is now, also. Cleaned up some of the mess on the desk but there are more charging wires hanging over the computer now. The laptop is on the real desk next to this, may get updated pics later.

Is that a custom built desktop? Or did you just buy it?
-
Someone must not like desktops..
-
Actually thats what I plan on getting next. I enjoy portability but I would like a unit which lets me customize it any which way I want.
By the way, any suggestions on forums like notebook review specifically for desktops -
Quite teh contrary! I don't play MMOs XD
-
I've ordered a port replicator, should be here shortly so then I can use the HDMI input on my monitor for both my PS3 and my D630. This also means that I need to order an HDMI switch, which I've got my eye on.
Favorite PS3 game at the moment, COD4
My new baby, a Gibson '84 Explorer Reissue, only comes in white with EMG 60-81 (neck - bridge) pickups. \m/

^
Nice set-up, what size is the Westinghouse?
The Desktop Hardware forum ^_^ -
Thanks. It's the L2410NM, 24". I ordered it from newegg and it came with 1 stuck pixel that I haven't been able to fix, but it only bugs me because i know it's not perfect. I never notice it in normal usage. I love the thing, it's a great monitor for the price, but I'm no videophile so I don't feel qualified to judge how accurately it represents color. I'm happy with it though
