Though my notebook is not a desktop replacement, I made my own docking station where I either use both the laptop screen and monitor, or only the monitor. A wireless keyboard and gaming mouse completes the setup. Plenty of room for food, a notebook (paper), etc. My laptop is always pushed back, doesn't need to be so close even though it's only a 13.3" screen with 1366x768 resolution.
Young eyes, perhaps?![]()
-
Well, 1366x768 is a very low resolution for 13.3" and thus a low pixel density, so it's still comfortable to view two feet from the eyes. Over the years, virtually all my main laptops have had much higher pixel densities than that. Right now, my Dell D820 is 15.4" 1920x1200 and my Toughbook Y5 i s 14.1" 1400x1050. At one point I even had several Thinkpads with 15.0" 2048x1536!
-
Should try a high res 15in. Now thats a vision test right there.

Haha.
I'm due for an upgrade sometime this year. Thinking of moving to a 14" with 1600x900 resolution. Though a 13.1" might be more appealing.
A higher resolution will assist in my CAD and programming work. I'm surprised that I'm getting by as is! -
It's been yonks since I posted in here! First photo in the new house and of the new laptop! Lighting is HORRIBLE! So don't mind the dodgy photo... :/
-
1366x768 for programming and cad??? Did you bump your head??? LoL I did this on my m11x (not the cad) and I about put my fist through the computer several times.
-
It's all i've ever used so i'm used to it!
I've gone two years (the amount of time that i've owned my laptop) using 1366x768 every single day for programming using MS VS Ultimate and CADing in Solidworks, Creo 1.0, AutoCAD, and Inventor.
Still gets the job done. I even play World in Conflict from time to time.
-
I was in the same situation as well (768p for two years, actually also a Satellite >.<). It was fine for use as well, but once you go 1080p, you *don't* go back. It's that good. When you replace that laptop, check it out

killkenny1 Too weird to live, too rare to die.
I did some CAD on 1366*768 too. What's wrong with that, if you don't have any better options? -
There's some amazing setups in this thread. I'll post mine once I receive my M18x and U2412m monitor.
-
Yeah I hear ya. I once upon a time used a netbook (acer aspire one) and tried using vs2008 on it and lets just say 1024x600 and visual studio are not a good combo.

Because sometimes, your eyes need to be reminded why high res is awesome
Btw, I noticed that your sig says "FDH+" instead of "FHD+" for your M4600... -
The same is valid when using a desktop. how can you use a keyboard and a mouse if you have, for example, a meal in front of you and behind it a keyboard and a mouse? The space between the laptop and the wall is as usefull as the space between the keyboard and the desktop lcd.
-
hmm... i put my meal to the left of the laptop sometimes
At home it'll have to be the right side.
But usually i try not to eat next to a computer/laptop ... i already have to wipe the keyboard every morning (silly keyboard that shows the grease from the normal use... and this is not due to eating next to it!) Bye. -
Agreed. I thought it was a good idea for a time, but quickly went back to lugging my vostro 1700 around again.
I find that anything other then a paper or 2 in front to render the laptop or desktop unusable. I do sometimes put my meal in front of the keyboard, but when I do that I am not using the computer and my main focus is the meal at hand.
Here is how my workstation looks at work:
I have 1 sheet of paper and a bubble wrap folded as my elbow rest. Yeah pretty ghetto but it works and at this time work is tight on money so Ill deal. But as you can see I have plenty of usable space in front as well as I sometimes use that space for small temporary things. But if I need to read a book or look at something bigger I go to the other part of my desk or setup my book stand. -
Here's my new glass desk. The only thing that bugs me is having to clean it all the time! Fingerprints, dust, cat fur, all seem to reappear minutes after cleaning it.

Nice setup! But yeah that is why I got rrid of my glass desk setup. Loved the look and all but between the worry of it shattering with all my equipment on it and the fact that I had to clean it so often made it less worth it over time. But if you dont mind cleaning its a nice setup, just not for people like me that HATE cleaning.

Wow very nice collection of lenses.
Id take those over the notebooks -
I am certain that not a thing in the world would require that many tablets, laptops and notebooks, for one person.
-
Status Quo But a nice collection all around.

Hmmm..... glare!

Despite the idea of all that tech for one person, how do you use it setup like that?
I was thinking the same thing. Im a HUGE techie in my personal time and its my career and Im trying to lower my computer count to a single server/desktop and my laptop. I find it a pain in the butt maintaining the 2 servers, folding @ home machine, and 3 laptops. Hopefully Ill have it down to 2 servers and the folding machine with my laptop on the go.
Despite the glare private mentioned, you have an admirable setup for a college kid. Heck its better then mine and Im a working college graduate. -
Definitely an awesome setup for a college student, wish I had something like that =/. I could use my 22" Visio as a secondary monitor, and that's about it
-
Thank you, and the lens collection cost more to.
You are correct, they are not all mine I should of clarified that more. The Dell Studio is going to stay at work all the time now. The M18x is my main computer at home and will hook it up the monitor when it's needed. The M11x is the computer I take with me when I travel. The Dell N7110 is the wifes computer. As for the tablets, one is mine, wifes and the oldest daughters.
Thanks. -
Ha, I see.
I thought you had them all for yourself. I was like "What?" I imagined you like in Hackers or something, swordfish perhaps making little worm programs to take down the bad guys

Thanks. St2421L. I had a gift card to staples and it's the only one they had. -
So it's a 24" and not a 27", thought the screen was a little small for a 27". Just wanted to make sure I'm not going blind. Good deal though any time you can save money.

Oops. Yes. 24 not 27. -
Here is my crappy rig
-
If you call that crappy I'm willing to take it off your hands...

Yeah I do have a 24 and 21.5 in lcds, but Im too mobile to use them. Even at home Im moving all over. But when i hit the lottery id like to make an eyefinity setup...
Sent from my PG06100 using Tapatalk -
If I won the lottery I'd abandon the technological world all together and live it simple on my own island. Though I'd have solar tech and security cameras with an eyefinity setup.. oh darn you know what I mean.
-
Why would you need security cameras if you're on your own island?
-
Pirates..
-
Don't worry, the RIAA has you covered
-
What are you using to run dual monitors from your laptop? I am going to be switching from a desktop to a laptop but want to retain my dual monitor setup. Only thing I've found that seems okay is the matrox box. And those have really hit or miss reviews.
-
Business laptops with docking stations tend to have two or three monitor connectors. My Dell E4300 has two DVI ports on it's docking station, for instance.
I wouldn't consider a Matrox unless you already had a computer and needed multiple monitors, but did not want to get a new laptop. -
Finally got around to setting up eyefinity. Sadly the rest of my desk and office are in disarray due to server swaps and spring cleaning/purging.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I know that the Alienware laptops with an ATI GPU (eyefinity capable) can drive the laptop screen as well as 2 externals all at the same time. Did this for a while myself. Sadly though the Nvidia ones cannot unless you have SLI, and then you have to choose SLI or 3 screens, cant have both.
Due to how awesome the docking station idea is, I came very close to getting a precision workstation and the e-port plus dock that allows you to drive 5 displays total! But the drop in graphics muscle was too hard for me to stomach -
Please stop youre making me like ATI even more then I already do.
-
So I'm basically SOL? I'm going to be getting a P170EM. Is there not a way for me to run my dual desktop monitors from it since it has a 675 gtx?
-
If you have more then one video output on your notebook you can run 2 external with the internal off.
-
Ya it doesn't have 2 dvi outputs. That sucks.
So why wouldn't a Matrox work? Isn't that what they are for? Or am I mistaken? -
-
Nice and very simple look. I like that Joel if you do end up with a second monitor, I'm guess that the desktop will end up on the floor.
-
Thanks!
Yes, it will. I actually don't know how it snuck onto my desk int the first place.
It was originally on the floor, but I moved my room around and I must have set it up on the desk without realizing... Oh well. It's not doing any harm at the moment.
