^^^ Wow, that's the first time I've seen a computer built into a Coke box.

Yeah I was thinking about going pepsi but coke just had a more classic feel.

Set up the desktop organizer, and have my Nokia and Sennheisers on display. I need to figure out how to hang those headphones... Don't want to damage it with a Command Hook, and I can't nail anything into the walls
Breadboard on the shelf is a 74193 connected to a 74155, which connects to a 74151, which connects to a seven-segment display.

Not much to say about the above....except I'm jeolous...can't run anything like that with any of my setups. I guess that's the advantage of having a desktop.
-
1) Easier to set up multiple monitors;
2) If you put the desktop computer on the floor, it takes up less desktop space than a laptop (we talked about this before in this thread);
3) No annoyingly warm palmrests;
4) More upgradeable than laptops;
5) Better performance than laptops on a per-dollar basis, i.e. you get more bang for your buck;
6) Desktops are less likely to get stolen;
7) On the average, desktops are more reliable, partly because you don't move them around and partly because they tend to be cooled better than laptops;
8) The average desktop keyboard is better than the average laptop keyboard.
Laptops have only two advantages that I can think of:
1) Mobile;
2) Consume less electricity. -

Not many people take notice of this but all notebooks natively have a UPS built-in (aka Battery), which can last for hours. Trying to power a desktop setup (tower, monitor, kb+mouse, speakers) during a blackout like during a hurricane would require a UPS that would cost an extra $$$ and wouldnt last as long.
Not losing any work from a power outage or accidental unplugging, and seamlessly being able to continue my work is a big advantage to me. -
Money wise a desktop will offer the best bang for the buck for performance. I have my M18x which to me is just like a desktop in most circumstances, the only thing that I'm limited to is having two external monitors compared to three and more. Besides that I have no problems having laptops only.
Performance wise I'm running 4.2GHz for daily tasks and may OC to 4.8GHz and up to 5.1GHz for those rare occasions if I needed to...beating most desktops. Plus it's portable, and as Flip has mentioned has built in UPS. -
Here is my new desktop set up. Running both screens, the receiver amp, subwoofer, and PC I idle around 130 watts. When I turn my volume on my amp to max while playing video on the larger screen, then the entire system only consumes 250 watts. This does include the power that my 8" subwoofer is using.
I tested the 24" screen and the PC alone. It only pulls 44 watts from the wall. The screen backlight is at 30%.
I had to make the screen mount a few inches higher to accommodate the larger 24" screen below. To do this I had to replace the old 2x6's and add longer ones. I've got the 2x6's attached to the desk so I don't have to mount my screen to the walls. -
Keep in mind that I wasn't saying we should use desktops exclusively and stop buying laptops. As you can see in my signature, I have lots of laptops as well as desktops. But because desktops offer a more pleasant user experience, I use desktops most of the time and use laptops only when mobility is needed. I often hear people say desktops are obsolete. I strongly disagree, and think that's even more absurd than claiming that slate tablets can fully replace laptops. The upcoming Microsoft Surface Pro could fully replace laptops, but with the attached keyboard, it's not exactly a slate tablet. -
