Thanks for response. Yes, connecting the external monitor was within first things I tried, but no signal.
I have another question to my theory: will the FL90 boot up without having video card installed? Because mine is not.
-
Which USB port got zapped? The ones on the left side of the computer are located on the motherboard, the ones on the right are on a daughterboard connected by a ribbon cable. I don't know if it will make any difference, but if it was a port on the right try disconnecting the ribbon cable and see if the computer will start.
-
unfortunately the one on the left side. I already have the notebook dissasembled down to separate components and I'm trying to boot with minimal configuration.
Another RAM not helping, with/without HDD still the same but HDD led doesn't blink without hdd, and with removed video card also won't boot up. So now I'm curious if the FL90 should boot up without video card if everything else is OK. -
It could be that the video card just happened to die at exactly the same time as the computer got zapped, but knowing that the computer got zapped I wouldn't want to spend any money to bet on it. My recommendation would be to put the money towards a new machine.
-
what is supporting my opinion about corrupted bios is that system was still running after it got zapped. It was dead after sleep mode. So I think BIOS is either not running, or it is finding some bad component preventing it to start.
About the bad component: I'm excluding the video card for this moment, as it was correctly running after zapping. Second option will be USB controller for left sided usb ports since I had a mouse sticked in right side usb port and it was running. But the left side ports are controlled with south bridge, aren't they? As the system was running, the south bridge should be probably just partialy damaged. So my thoughts are now either bios eeprom is damaged or soutbridge usb controller is preventing bios to start. Any ideas if my thoughts may be correct? -
Your assessment seems quite plausible, but to fix the southbridge will require desoldering the device and soldering in a new one. If you don't have the skills and equipment to do this yourself, the repair will not be cost-effective on such an old computer.
-
I'd try to reflow the video card. So far I had like 15 FL90s in my hands, all with black screens. All worked again after reflowing.
Maybe it's just a co-incident ...
Regarding if it would boot without a video card. I do not think so, but browse the forum, maybe. I know that some FL90s boot despite a blown video card, while others do not ... hard to draw a conclusion.
Good luck -
Good news everyone
I'm now able to boot up and connect through remote desktop (just writing from here). My 8600gt is dead but everything else is OK.
Little more info: my laptop wasn't booting up because of windows was not correctly shut down, and on booting it was hanging on some windows menu...so I thought it was not even went through POST, but that was a mistake. I've figured it out thanks to usb floppy which was trying to seek diskette on boot, so my bios was OK. It was just very bad timing for a card to dead so I was really confused..
PS: now I'm running with video card removed, so my FL90 can boot up without it
Thanks for (mainly moral) support -
Good stuff! I was going to post back to say I agree with the Dr. to reflow the graphics card since there's basically no cost to try. You can still try of course, but knowing that the computer works you may want to look for a replacement graphics card as a longer term solution.
Update to my posts on page 19 of this thread regarding the ATI 4670: I received the ebay cooler and found that it is only adequate when the GPU is not stressed. With this cooler the GPU idles in the low 50C range, but running any 3D graphics (I used the render test in GPU-Z) had the temps rising quickly. I stopped the test when the GPU hit 85C.
Someone else posted (I don't remember if it was here or elsewhere) that the computer's internal fan responds only to the CPU temp. I believe this is correct since I didn't see the computer's fan kick in at all during my testing. The fan worked fine when I ran the Orthos CPU loader so I know it does work, but when only the GPU was loaded the CPU stayed at around 31C which is not hot enough to trigger the fan.
At idle without any external fan (and internal fan not running), the 4670's temp rises quickly -- within half a minute the temp hit 65C and was still climbing fast when I shut it down.
Also, I have reinstalled the CPU cover since it doesn't seem to make any noticeable difference in the temps. -
video card is alive after reflowing with hot air gun
Now I'm thinking I should mod and reflash bios to lower the card frequencies..
-
I am running an ATI 4650 DDR2 for a year now.
In-game temps are up-to 90°C - this is kinda my limit, so I do not regard 85° as a problem. Also, the CPU fan kicks in normally, as there is always CP-load when there is GPU-load ... at least in my practical examples, which is basically only gaming (very seldom nowadays).
In closing, I would not worry about 85°C, too much - lower 90° is where you should get concerned.
Cheers -
@ Dr.Colossos
I have a Amazon PC L93 (equals to ifl90), and my card fried. I reballed it (i´m cellphone technician), and it worked about 2 months flawlessly, then started the blue screens, and then nothing more. Now I want to fix it properly, and make a good deal on gpu x money. information about this cards are scrumbled, and you seem to know what you are talking about, so I ask you a few questions, if I may...
- can this notebook use a MXM 3.0 Type A card? found one 4670 for 96usd, and bought it unaware if it fits or not.. silly mistake, felt too happy to find a seller that sends with free shipping to Brazil. I asked seller to wait before I figure out what to do, but he´s in the rush to send and don´t have to refund
- if not, does it accepts any ati MXM II right out the box?
- power supply is 90w, is it ok for any card it can handle?
- if you were in my situation, what card would use for yourself?
thanks for your advice
br -
ATI 3400/3450/3470 - used at around 30-50, always worked out of the box for me - but no gaming card, but perfectly okay for office, programming, etc.
ATI 3650 - used at around 40-80, there are several versions, from 256MB RAM to 1024MB, also DDR2 or DDR3. DDR3 would be faster, but these cards might cause problems, they work for one, and won't work for others. The ATI 3650 DDR2 512MB should work in 99% of all cases - you can play older games with it.
ATI 4650 - used starting at around 80, up to 120. Here, heat might start to be a problem, but I have one, under heavy load reaching temps of just under 90°. This one plays even recent games, I guess ... I only have old ones, hehe. Also, some complain about bad performance (search for PCI throttling), it is not the case for me, but several others.
In conclusion: if you plan to play recent games, maybe get a new laptop, the FL90 is quite old nowadays, and even a ATI 4650 won't give you what you might want (but it is far better than the 8600M GT you had!). Selling the parts of yours still might pay you 100-150. If you can live with an ATI 3450, go for that.
Good luck -
thnx a lot, that cleared my doubts, I´ll go with a hd4650. even if it end up working as 1x instead of 16x ocasionally, it´s something I´m willing to accept. but as I see, it only happened to ppl that had the 256mb 8600m gt (mine was 512mb)
my need of a graphic card in this notebook is only for heavy graphic interfaces within softwares that I use in my job, it´s not intended for games, if I get same performance as with stock card, I´m happy enough. i´m bidding 65usd in hd4650 in ebay, let´s see if I win. If not, at least now I now what cards I cannot buy.
Again, thanx a lot! I almost got the mxm A version of hd4670 by mistake (saw on mxm-upgrade that hd4670 worked, and guessed they were all the same), glad someone could point me out in the right direction.
This msg has been sent from the ifl90 (it decided to turn on again, but I know it won´t take long till next bsod...)
best regards -
Look for a ati 3650 with ddr3 memory. The ddr3 version will usually have 256mb of memory.
I had one that installed for some months before I sold it and bought a better laptop. -
Hello fl90 owners.
I'll post my experience here with replacing the 8600 with a 3650 256 ddr3.
Big thanks to the author of this thread for making his great guide.
It really helped me out a lot.
-I managed to pull out the video card cooler without unscrewing the cpu/nbridge
cooler
-I modified then the video card cooler with a knife
-Damaged the cooler fins in the process, but just several fins
-The external screen works! Thank god. But no through the hotkey, I use
the control panel
-Conditions of death of 8600. Sleep mode and increased solar activity
(March 2012)
-Question: do those conductive pads on the video ddr3/north bridge are good
enough? For I've been experiencing screen glitches, especially on long
youtube HD videos (20+ minutes). And I suspect the overheating ddr3 for
the gpu processor temperatures remain normal according to gpu-z (58 idle,
68 heavy load)
-Else this was the first time I've gone that deep into a laptop. Also
first time I replaced the thermal compound. So for other newbs to this,
just go for it, but proceed with caution. -
Hi all.
I'm new here and like others my GT8600 from my Compal IFL90 stopped working..
Already baked it but thats only a temporary solution so I'm thinking on buying a HD3650 256mb ddr3 mxm II for it.
THere are several in ebay but most of them say for ACER and are preoloaded with ACER vbios.. does this represent an issue, or I'll be able to make it to work by changing its vbios?
I know that the heatsink needs changes but regarding the bios and or vbios, will there be any issue or I can buy any HD3650 MXM II that will certainly work with the COmpal?
Thanks in advance!
EDIT:
Sry just saw that the versions preloaded with ACER can work with COmpal FL90, still do I need to change the vbios or I just need to mount the GPU and bang it will work?
Also is there any difference between Compal FL 90 and IFL90?
Mine has the geforce 8600gt 512mb ddr2..
Thanks! -
Not sure about the differences between FL90 and IFL90 - nothing to worry about as far as I know.
Acer vBIOS works normally without problems, and I assume they are from Acer laptops, then, and these normally work.
However, the DDR3 versions of the 3650 act up for some, including me - I never got the external monitor to work. Might have been a defective card, might have been an incompatibility, I cannot tell.
You may try it, but if it does not work, try not to act surprised
The ATI 3650 DDR2 512MB is the safest bet - also the 3400 series (3450/3470), but they will not play games very well (if at all), but neither will the 3650, when you aim for the lastest ones.
Good luck -
Thanks alot Dr. Colossos!
HD3650 512mb ddr2 it is, does the model matter? 003 004 005?
This one, for instance, will do?
MXM II Graphic Card VG.86M06.003 ATI HD3650 DDR2 512MB [VG.86M06.003] - $115.99- laptop-ac-adapter.org
Thanks (and sry ic I cant post other sites here) -
I can't really remember what the difference between 003 to 005 was, but 003 is most common, and always worked for me.
I had one 004 that did not work, but I am pretty sure the card had a fault. I think I successfully used at least one 004 with a FL90 - but they seem to be rarer, so that's why I rather stick to a 003, as this never let me down.
Cheers -
Thanks Doc

I'd like to tell you about my experiences with replacing the 8600m GT of my Compal.
I've got a Nexoc Osiris E619 (Compal FL92). Stock configuration was:
CPU: Intel Core2Duo T9300
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 8600m GT (512 MB)
HDD: 200 GB Seagate Momentus
RAM: 2x 1 GB
I changed the HDD a couple of times, cause it got too small.
Now i've got a OCZ Vertex II 120 GB SSD mounted in the HDD slot and a 500 GB S-ATA Seagate Momentus mounted in the ODD Bay with an adapter-frame. I also upgraded the RAM to 2x 2 GB.
The SSD accelerated the Compal like i never mentioned. It only takes 15 seconds to boot Win 7, connect WiFi and start Firefox. Bye bye Standby!
So i wanted to upgrade my GPU too. First i bought a GeForce 9600m GT and screen kept black (cause of vBIOS). Yes, i should have searched the web before trying it
Cause of the advices in this thread i bought a 1 GB ATI mobility Radeon HD3650 and mounted it. First startup and driver installation looked very good.
Before installing the ATI i did a 3DMark06 with the old 8600m GT and now wanted to see how much more power the ATI has got. The NVIDIA got a 3DMark Score of 3489. HD3650 only got 3468 ... AND there were much artefacts during the HDR tests (none of them with 8600m GT).
Maybe the ATI isn't ok, maybe it's just not compatible. I wouldn't test another GPU any more. For Playing CoD4 and doing CAD the 8600m GT works fine. -
Hello again,
I still have an Compal JFL92 with 8600M GT video card.
First black screen after 2 years and 1 week so just one week after waranty ended. Was reflow at a laptop service.
Second black screen was after 7 months so got another reflow at same laptop service.
Third black screen after 1 month and 1 week. Then go to the same service shop and this time make a reballing of the graphical chip. After that about 3-4 months GPU temp was low again I mean 55-60 'C in idle and 75-80 'C in games same like in first year of laptop life then temp start to increase again.
When temp is 70 'C in idle (Windows) then is run a game temp go to 90-95 'C in games.
So after 7 months after reballing of the GPU 86m he fails again but this time in a different way.
Screen was grey I can control the light of screen with FN+F4 or F5 but nothing else just gray screen of death.
So this time because I was sake of dissasembling and reassembling of my lappy he got a cut on the back. And not take me only 5min to got video card out. And video card got a baking in my electrical owen 190'C for 6 minutes.
And 8600m GT is running again, I will see for how long, but now is cost less for me. I can reflow my self and in only 20-25 min is back again.
Now temp stay at 65'C in Windows idle and 75-80 'C in games.
Now after baking seems that laptop cooler not starting again by himself.
So only ussing a benckmark software to start it.
PS: I found a method to start laptop fan with a software. If someone is interesting I can exlapin here in a new post. And if somene interesting in pictures with my cutted back of JFL92 laptop I can attach or send pictures too. Not look very nice but at value of the laptop weight allot to take card out very easy.
PPS: with fan started (with software) GPU stay in idle at 55 'C and in games at 70-75 'C. -
Hi, nice to hear it is working for you. I had reflown my card about 4 times and it is also still working. I found one interresting fact, that always when my card died it was while waking-up from system sleep mode. Intervals of dying were 1-2 weeks. From last reflow (about 2 months ago) I had never gone to sleep mode and it is still working
PS: which software are you using for fan control? -
@a44: Hi, first time when video card died was the same because laptop entered in stand-by (sleep mode) so I disabled this option from power control.
My expectation after reballing (change solder balls under the nVidia chip) was longer then 6 month.
So about 3 months ago I aquired an electric oven for baking(not only food).
To days ago when I was at laptop the screen start to flashing and after 5 seconds image on the screen frozen. When I check GPU temp was 93 degree last displayed by SpeedFan.
Press power-off button and then grey screen apeared with only 2 spots of white in right side of screen but changing of backlight intensity work. After restart was the same grey screen. This was gey for first timme, before reballing was only black (off).
So baking of card was made in electrical owen with heat from up and down and air recirculating. Temp was set at 190 'C and let there for 6 minuts to bake in own sauce (soldering flux).
After that work like a charm.
Now for all who are interesting to start laptop fan using a software I will explain but is not a dedicated software, no is a CPU Stress Test program writen by a russian caled CPU Stress Test.
Can be downloaded from here: http://testmem.tz.ru/cst.zip (original site)
Please check this file with an antivirus so will be no blame to me.
What else will be needed: SpeedFan can be downloaded by here: http://www.almico.com/speedfan446.exe (original site)
Please check this file too with an antivirus to be sure.
How can be used: first start SpeedFan.exe
After SpeedFan initialized and GPU temp apeared on statusbar then you can start cst.exe (CPU Stress Test).
And let is to run for a specifical number of seconds (displayed by program).
How long it's hard to tell must be tested.
Before reballing I let program between 15-20 seconds to run then stoped and fan remain blocked to run on full speed.
After reballing of the nVidia chip when program displayed 4 seconds I stop program and fan remain block on full speed.
ATTENTION: He remain on full speed until other program will stress the CPU for example something single thred like an large Flash application (EX: games on facebook).
Now after first baking (reflowing) on electrical owen I see that this 4 secs are not enough and must let him to run at least 25-30 seconds or let GPU to get hot >70'C then start program. And after this baking I observed that fan not start by himselfs even if GPU temp go to over 80'C so something happend but I suspect problem is because I cut the back of laptop.
If someone whant to discuss with me directly on email or Yahoo messenger.
setnicgabriel (at) gmail.com (this is for email)
setnicgabriel (at) yahoo.com (this is only for yahoo messenger)
For yahoo messenger please send an email on Gmail first.
I can send picture with how to make cut in back of laptop to take video card out in 2-3 min without dissasembling all laptop. I suspect this cut prevent cooling fan to start by himselves because somehow hot air cannot increase again CPU temperature so fan never starts again by himselves.
I will look how to connect fan direct to USB so can be started more easy.
If somebody know how to connect so fan can be started by connecting on USB.
PS: I have a cooler pad (CoolerMaster) too with 3 fans connected on USB and is useless because decreasing of temp for GPU is only about 2-3 degrees. -
Hi all.
I bought Radeon 4570 DDR3 and it's not working with my FL90. The laptop don't even start, zero reaction. In the first post of this topic the 4570 was mentioned, however I suppose that the author thought of the DDR2 version.
This 4570 version comes from toshiba laptop. Maybe BIOS update will help. What do you think?
Greetings -
Toshiba cards will NOT work, tough luck.
BIOS/vBIOS update won't help either - you might get it working when soldering - user ".NetRolller 3D" posted about this here once, but I would not go down that path ...
Good luck! -
Hello,
Just entered the forum and i salute all of you!!!!
I need some help.
I have a broken 8400m 256 mxm i.
I had read that ATI 3650 is ok for replace but i dont know if will work with my laptop. I own an ALTEC NB VOYAGER A3000-3.
Do you know anything about this laptop?
I search everywhere but there is no information about ALTEC.
Thanks. -
never heard of altec nor do I find anything about it - other than it comes from Greece.
Maybe try searching for an ID that is on the back of the laptop, I guess it's just a rebrand (sold under different name).
You can replace MXM-I by MXM-II cards, but MXM-II is larger than MXM-I, see here http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/396320-acer-mxm-models-cards.html#post5044011
So it might work it it does fit - I cannot tell you anything else.
Try it if you dare, leave it alone if you don't dare.
Good luck! -
Thanks for the reply.
Here is the specs of this notebook:
Untitled Document
Unfortunatelly there is no other ID on the back.
There is enough space to put mxm ii but.....the bad thing is that i dont know anything about the version of this bios.
So i have to take the risk, right? -
Sorry, I did another quick search, could not find anything.
I am sure it is just a rebrand, so maybe try to find out something about the laptop.
If oyu don't find out anything, give it a try. Good luck! -
Hi...again!!!!
You had right about the rebrand.
I search the motherboards serial in internet (VESTEL 14MB02-4 22/03/2007).
I found that the VESTEL's notebook are the same with the ALTEC (rebrand).
Intel's Santa Rosa Platform is Alive on Vestel Notebook at CeBIT
(2nd pic is the same with mine but without the fingerprint). -
You mean that one -> http://www.notebookreview.com/assets/21318.jpg
That's the same as a ONE 6500 (also a rebrand)
See here -> one C 6500 | eBay
More german stuff here -> Test One C6537 Notebook - Notebookcheck.com Tests
I do not know who actually built this, could be a Compal white book, but I do not know.
As far as I know, it should work with an ATI card. But of course, no guarantee at all!
But as this also came with an Nvidia 8400/8600, there are sure tons of people with the same problem, so you should be abel to find more info with that.
Good luck -
Hi
I can get a Sony Vaio VGN-NW21ZF with an HD4570 inside. I was wondering if I can use that card to replace my broken 8600M GT in my FL90. I'm not sure if the 4570 inside that Sony is an MXM II card though. Any help?
Thanks in advance -
All I can tell you is that the FL90 works with am ATI 4570 MXM II.
I got one from mxm-upgrade.com and it worked.
I will not work with any 4570 (e.g. Toshiba) as these are "locked" to Toshiba models.
The same might be true for Sony.
I can also not tell you if that Sony laptop you are referring to has an MXM II card.
Good luck -
Recently looked at these instructions and bought an ATI card (VG.86M06.004, should be a Radeon 3650 DDR2 model).
Problem is it came with a bracket much like the original bracket on the compal card with screw holes instead.
Bracket is glued to the card:
Compare with original bracket, detached from 8600M GT:
The original bracket was easy to remove because I didn't care about the card, and because i could just push it out as explained in the first post by Dr.Colossos. I have no idea how to *safely* remove the new one so that I can attach the heatsink to this card. I can barely get my fingernails under the metal part, and I'm afraid of damaging it. I've been thinking about different ways to lock the heatsink on, but the only obvious way to do that is with screws from the bottom and nuts on the top. The screws need a very flat head or the graphics card will bend too much as it is screwed to the motherboard. Any advice on removing the backplate or alternatives for attaching the heatsink? -
As you pointed out, it's glued. I normally remove them now with my heat gun - a hair blower/dryer or anything that gets warm air will do just as well.
For my heat gun, I circle over the bracket for about 30 seconds to make the glue "melt", then I take a flat screwdriver and try to lift it.
This works quite well.
Good luck -
It's off! I also managed to get the yellow glue off the original board and stuck it on the new one, then put the old bracket.
For some reason the heatsink seems to fit this card without modification. I've cleaned everything up and applied new thermal compound. I'm hoping to test it tonight. -
Nice.
You don't need to glue, but maybe you need to plastic for insulation.
Some heat sinks need work, others don't.
If it works, keep an eye on temps for the first couple of days.
Good luck! -
Laptop is back to life although still in intensive care -- i've followed your instructions to not reassemble everything yet.
I've been measuring CPU temperaturs with a linux boot CD. They went from 44 (boot) up to 51-52 (idle) and 65 max. under load. Fan seems to kick in at or just above 52. I haven't used this laptop for almost one year, so I'm wondering whether this is normal for an FL90?
I still have to measure GPU temperatures. I'm installing Windows 7 right now, as the original laptop disk had already found its use elsewhere.
EDIT: installed Windows 7 + ATI drivers. lowest "experience index" is for Aero = 5.2. During FurMark burn-in test the card reached a max temp. of 85°C. CPU never even hit 70. I think this is good enough. -
With a T9300 I am idling here at 40°s - I think you could get a bit lower temps with new thermal paste (did you apply any?).
But the temps are okay, so if you don't want to invest anymore time, leave it - you should be safe.
GPU temps are okay as long as they stay under 90° under full load. The lower, the better, but the FL90 is not great at getting the heat out.
Good job!
Btw - you can sell the 8600M GT on ebay - marked as defective - worth 20€, even when defective, that should cut your cost a bit.
Cheers -

Hi Dr. Colossos,
I'm new here and like so many other guys my FL90 just died a few days ago...
I love that laptop so I refuse to dump it without at least try to get it to work!
my issue is that I can only find the HD3650 on eBay and as I have read in this forum is that it's not granted that the VGA card will work...
Someone mentioned that bought from this seller (mokkin) before and worked, he has this model:
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 MXM II VGACard 512MB HD3650 | eBay
but in eBay there are cheapper sellers, like this one, and the shipping is free! :
ATI Mobility Radeon HD3650 MXM II VGA Card 512MB HD3650 | eBay
my concerns are, this last one (cheapper) there are more chances of not being 100% working than the other?
Do you know of many people cheated with this?
Thanks in advance. -
I bought from mokkin, twice, and once from a guy from Taiwan. All cards worked.
Sure, when buying from China, it's easy to get cheated, but pay thru paypal and you are at least a bit safer.
The other option is to sell you laptop.
And, most important, try to bake your NVidia card to be sure that really the card is faulty, not maybe the CPU, mainboard, RAM, display, wiring.
Good luck! -
Thanks!
I'll try to bake it and I'll reply my developments! -
Hi Dr.Colossos,
I read your thread carefullyand i want to buy a mxm2 HD3470 card.
So i found this card on Ebay:
NEW ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 3450 3470 MXM II 256MB UK | eBay
Can you tell me, is this the right replacement?
Have you had any problems with the card so far?
Is the HD3470 graphics card in operation very warm or is it cool and quiet?
many thanks in advance
best regards -
Yep, that one should work. I do not operate an FL90 with this card anymore (got one with an ATI 3650 and one with an 4650), but I head several of 3400/3450/3470 in other FL90s - they all worked without any problem. Heat is no real concern, but use thermal paste/pads of course!
Keep in mind, that it it anything like a gaming card - but on the other hand, neither the 3650 or the 4650 are gaming cards anymore compared to todays standard.
The 3450 is a good deal, for making your laptop work again, so I'd go for it.
Cheers -
Hi Dr.Colossos, :hi2:
I will note your helpful instructions.
Many many thanks in advance
best regards -
Dr.Colossos > Thanks for the instruction - I'm going to use it!!!
But please notice that in the first post > http://forum.notebookreview.com/com...our-broken-8600m-gt-graphics-card-i-fl90.html
there are no photos. Can you check it and get it work!
For my FL90 I'm going to buy 3650 512 DDR2.
I bake my 8600 GT but I have no time to check is it working (little baby in home).
I bought Arctic Silver 5 and I'm going to use it. -
Thanks, fotos are back up - must have deleted them accidently somewhen during last month.
3650 512MB DDR2 is good choice - but I sure would try baking the old card first. This lets you know whether it really is the card, or maybe if something else went bad.
You do not need to reassemble the laptop completly for testing, see section 3.3. in my guide.
BUT: But be sure to never have the battery in there, when reassembling just partially, it might destroy your mainboard and/or battery!
How to: Replace your broken (8600M GT) graphics card (in the [I]FL90)
