Just unplug the power cable from the battery to the mobo and then plug it back in; this only after you have drained it beforehand.

You double that to get the double data rate of DDR. No need for a sarcastic response @nhidog

    That's it!

The PPA Nvidia 415 driver did the trick, now I am running Linux Mint 19.1 cinnamon with kernel 4.20 and PPA nvidia driver 415 with 3 external monitors (2x 4k and a 1080p) thank you so much!

question, do I need to install bumblebee or prime etc?

if you under volt to much when you go on battery and the clocks drop low enough and you run into the .5xx mv range where the limit of the cpu even being able to work you will face insatiability you can either combat this by a diff under volt for on battery or locking your clocks higher when on battery

Two issues I haven't been able to figure out on my 15+.

First, I cannot get past the 35W limit when on battery. I'm past it when on AC but I guess there is a cap when on battery?

Second, my trackpad's right click in the corner is very hit and miss. I have to press it extra hard and it only sometimes works. Any thoughts?

That is probably a good thing. If you find a way to get beyond this limit, it is probably not going to be good for the long term health of your battery. Performance oriented laptops are great when plugged in but are often times significantly limited when running on battery power.

    Fair point.

Out of curiosity when I’m on AC how can I tell if the FIVR - Disable and Lock Turbo Power Limits is working? Box is checked but I was having some issues where it said it could t find a driver. Think it’s working but not sure how to confirm.

I'm not sure if it's the same, but my graphic card also seems to turn on and off and on and off and so, as shown by the temp sensor on AfterBurner (top graph). Normally, it sticks to 0 when the graphic card is not in use. But I cannot figure out how to see if the graphic card is turned on or off with GPU-Z. Any clue ?

Befor writing this message I thought it happened only after playing a game (as I remember form previous observations), but now it seems to behave this way as soon as I launch Afterburner. By monitoring GPU temp with TS: after startup, it's stuck at 0 which is normal. But when I start Afterburner, it begins to switch randmly between 0 and ~40.... Weird

If you go to the sensor tab of GPU-Z it will show the same thing. Mine does it all the time, regardless of what applications I have running. I'm going to do a fresh install of win10 to see if the issue persists. This is likely where a good chunk of battery drain comes from...

So a fresh install doesn't have that issue, I'll keep testing to see what may be causing such a thing.

I just received my 1g of Kyronaut, has anyone repasted their 17+? if so, what kind of temp decrease for a 10min aida64 with turbo fan can I expect? TIA

this will be my first time repasting a laptop, and i've watched bob's video a couple of times, but my question is, since I cant be sure how much paste is needed to cover the entire surfaces of the chips, would a little bit more than needed better than a little bit not enough?

Got this 3 months ago, was thinking about this one, a Thinkpad P51s or a XPS 15.
I dont like Dell, especially the design of the XPS 15, and the Lenovo was not enough bang for the buck.
Now I have this gaming machine, paid 1700€(!) for it (16gb, 144hz, two nvme's, Schenker XMG in Germany) and day after day I regret the euphoria I had the first 14days after arrival. Left shift key only works half the time for me, Linux is almost unusable and the hinge makes awful noise when opened.
Pro's for me were maintenance, the fact that its not from one of the huge companies and the 2,5'' bay. Sadly I did not notice the lack of Thunderbold (why did they even bother with this port, seriously, why would you need USB C without TB3?)
Last few weeks I could not decide whether to hate or to love this thing, got a 300€ Thinkpad for working and now this thing stays closed (and SILENT) every second day or so.
I don't game, I got it for the looks, the keyboard, the screen (logging terminals at 144hz look awesome!) and the compact form factor, even if I can not take it to computer science class for obvious environmental reasons.
But for my last few projects I needed the power of this thing and after using the Thinkpad (x250) for a few hours, switching to this (running Arch, i3) feels like entering a train wreck. I can't describe why, too much emotional frustration for spending all the money I had and got (god that hurts writing) on the wrong thing.
I thought I'll rule out the linux stuff, I will be satisfied by the keyboard and the design, the maintenance...
Why bother writing this? This thread is the only source I have for experienced Tongfang owners, and maybe someone finds kind words to make me feel a little bit better with this machine, maybe there is someone who switched from a Thinkpad/XPS to this and knows what he got from it, besides gaming... Maybe has some motivational speech for me as an gk5cn6z owner... Or has a solution for using ControlCenter in a VM/Wine... Or most importantly, the thermals on Linux...

//and the fans are not the only thing freaking me out, this thing makes noise even when they arent spinning! Cant tell if its coming from the left speaker or somewhere near the keyboard, but it's almost as loud as a spinning hard drive or my cat (in a relatively silent room). Anyone discovered the same?

///Did anyone try to fix keys not responding well? What can I do besides compressed air?

Sorry for your frustration BUT.... this first and foremost is a GAMING laptop. If it's not doing the things you need it to do maybe you should have focused more on something that meets your needs not aesthetics.

Regarding keys having issues, I had this occur twice on this machine - both times I had to remove the key (gently peel it up, bottom of the key first) and found a piece of fluff in the switch. Removing it made the keys respond as normal again.

But even a gamer may expect noiseless hinges, fans that are not THAT loud even at (lowest!) setting of 30% (I dont care about noise on full load, I knew it will be loud. But not at lowest speed), and weirdo coil-whining.
I give full ack on all positive aspects of this notebook,
but I did not think that most people don't care about the things I care about on the negative side.

Yeah I wouldn't pay that much for this machine. I got the Walmart OP 15+ @ $800, that was worth it. I had XPS and Thinkpad before and they are more business machines. Both are mainstream thus have much more Linux support.

So what's going on with your Linux? Mine works besides not able to control keyboard/lightbar lighting. Other than that, there's hiccups coming out of hibernation, but I've seen those happen in XPS and Thinkpads so I don't include them. The lighting I imagine may never get resolved. Hibernation may just be due to the relatively new hardware it's on, I have 144hz so could be that.

To help with Linux thermals, install undervolt and undervolt it on startup. Install powertop and have that --auto-tune on startup. Install nvidia-prime and select intel unless you plan to game in Linux. Those items and disabling lighting will get you close to Windows power management.

Powertop, nVidia-prime and undervolt is done,
but it does not underclock and stays at 3,9ghz in Idle.
There must be a way to make a VBox detect the keyboard light controller!

I agree with @nhidog I would have never spent the money you did on this particular rig expecting it to be the rig you need it to be. We were able in the states to pick it up for $799. At that price point it was a no brainer. I wish you luck though, you will probably get most of it sorted out in this thread. Lots of good peeps in here.

Strange, mine runs at min 800Mhz, you sure it's clocking 3.9GHz all the time? lscpu | grep MHz with nothing running of course. Fan never comes on, temperature is 28 - 30C. Although the thermal I help with changing thermal paste to liquid metal. I'm also running Mint but I imagine Arch should be comparable. On kernel 4.20.

Argh, god i thought that 800$ price tag was for the 1050 version, but it's exactly the same spec as mine, really sad. What have I done. I knew it has to be a thinkpad. I will never get over this...

@ndigog , yes I checked it multiple times. Only on kernel 4.14 (without Touchpad) I had working lower clockspeeds, on my first Installation (manjaro architect)

I would suggest trying another distro and using 4.20 cause touchpad got fixed. Also, I don't really use my Linux install much aside from sideloading apk to android devices. I really hate Windows command line. So I really have nothing running in the background. No tools, no ides, no development, no VMs, nothing. Maybe you've installed something that is using resource thus clocking CPU up. How are you monitoring temperature? Is it some sort of UI? Do you have crazy widgets running on desktops?

So I've been getting my TS settings dialed in. It's looking pretty good. The max I can get in Cinebench is 1237. Is this a limitation of single channel RAM by chance? I saw some people getting 1260+

Make sure you are using ThrottleStop 8.70.6 from my signature. When using the Task Scheduler, ThrottleStop 8.70.2 had a problem finding the driver. As long as you can see that the RwDrv.sys file is in your ThrottleStop folder, the Disable and Lock feature should work.

Most monitoring apps will wake up the Nvidia GPU on a regular basis to query its temperature, speed, etc. This will show up as the Nvidia GPU constantly waking up. If you are running ThrottleStop by itself, it should only report the Nvidia GPU temperature if another program or monitoring app has already woken up the Nvidia GPU. Not interfering with Optimus allows lower temps and lower power consumption. Run ThrottleStop and in the Options window if Nvidia GPU is checked, have a look on the main screen. If the Nvidia GPU is idle, ThrottleStop will show GPU -- °C.

If this changes every 5 or 10 or 20 seconds, something is waking up the GPU.

Probably. During a Cinebench run is the CPU staying consistently at its maximum speed? Does Limit Reasons show any throttling flags turning red while loaded?

I just hope I'll find peace with this thing as a local Desktop, with the possibility of a takeaway...
Will do further investigation on why my clockspeed stays so high,
    talking about fresh install.

Yeah, once it gets to to 39 multi it stays there. Before it gets there EDP OTHER and PL2 flash red a few times, but then it's fine most of the run.

For testing I have speedshift set to 0 which leaves it at around 4ghz idle, but as soon as I hit start in Cinebench, it dips to 3.6. It take about 6 seconds to get back up 3.9ghz

    EDIT:
I just updated to TS 8.70.6 and now I don't see the multi dip, and no red flashes! Cinebench is not consistently 1248!

That is not really something that VBox will be able to pass through. Unless the lighting controller presents as an internal USB device. You have some lower-level internal system hardware buses which typically are wired into the PCH. Things like the smi bus, i2c, and LPC. Such buses tend to be memory mapped IO.

If you install the program lm-sensors, then run the script named 'sensors-detect'. Then you will see some of these embedded microcontrollers in the output there.

The lighting stuff is not going to be supported in linux. There is no driver. The best you should want control for is the fan profile. And I should say: before running sensors-detect you should also upgrade your kernel to 4.20 to make sure you have the latest drivers in the kernel for lm-sensors.

Yeah. For ubuntu there is a script that will get you onto 4.20 kernel

or ukuu, if you prefer something with a GUI.

Yet another option might be to run linux as WSL within windows 10. Although I don't really recommend that, its an option maybe to consider.

Also you did not say if your key switches were blue or brown. BUt I would like to know. If they are brown and quiet, and you are still not satisfied even so. Because that is something that strongly affects my own purchasing decision(s).

I'm running everything stock 1.05 / 1.35.09 with gaming/equilibrium, 180w power draw, speed shift enabled, EPP at 84, and a core/cache -.120 undervolt . First cinebench score I got a 1236, but now every time it's ~1140 - normal? Temps seem OK after multiple runs with the stock paste (~80c)

I do have an extra stick of ram for dual channel, but contemplating on returning it, since I am hitting 100+ frames in my go to game, along with good temps for both gpu and cpu (~70c). If I do add this stick for dual channel do I need to adjust or turn off speed shift?

Also, I did buy a gram of kryonaut. Never re-pasted a laptop before - really only worried about stripping the screws. How much are you guys benefiting from the re-paste? Not sure if it's worth the risk for my needs, but I know now would be the time to do it.

Really enjoying this laptop so far. Insane deal for $800.

When RTX versions of these start showing up, I concur that a new separate thread should be started.

I would also suggest a separate thread be started for those dealing with Linux... or discussing here.

@scottydo42 Most here will tell you to repaste, since it is an enthusiast forum, but if you are OK with current temperatures it may not be worth bothering with. You can always save the new thermal paste and apply it in 1-2 years after the stock paste has begun to degrade.

Incidentally, I saw little to no difference applying Kryonaut on my 17" versus stock paste. Perhaps my application wasn't the best, or the stock paste was well optimized. Either way, in my case it was not worth the trouble.

Installing new RAM is easy, why not put in the second stick and compare framerates in your go-to game? Then return RAM if you're underwhelmed. Throttlestop tweaks are recommended though, if you are so inclined.

I'm on stock factory setup (thermals, single 16gb ram). Undervolt cache and core -.125. Gaming Fan setting, High Performance with a modified minimum clock to 5% instead of 100%. Increased the primary plane power limit to 110 from the original 80 and left the turbo long and short at 45-78, respectively (under TPL). I'm able to maintain the max cpu MHz. Also, speed shift enabled and auto enabled to start with TS at 84 no problems.

If you had dual channel memory, it would probably go higher. HWBot shows 1308 for the best system with an 8750H.

    https://hwbot.org/submission/3964437_kill4l_cinebench___r15_core_i7_8750h_1308_cb/

If you are using Speed Shift, the Minimum processor state in Windows probably does not do anything. The EPP setting in ThrottleStop will probably be in charge. When idle, adjust the EPP to 0 and see if you are at max multiplier. Set it back to 80 and see if it drops. Is Windows in charge or is ThrottleStop in charge of your CPU MHz?

Not normal. Run ThrottleStop and find out why your CPU is not maintaining full speed during Cinebench. Open the Limit Reasons window and you will probably see some item in red. That's the problem.
