It's a shame they don't have WXGA or WXGA+ in matte. I can't even begin to imagine how many potential customers that would attract.

I have contacted the sales customer service and with their suggestion, I have canceled my order for the IFL90 (WXGA+). I told them that I needed the laptop by August 17th and appealed for early August, but the screens haven't come in yet and she thought it would be best that I canceled.
I know others have been waiting much longer...I've waited for just 11 days and this is a huge delay since I needed this laptop shipped to me before I leave for college...because now that I've wasted 11 days waiting for something that wouldn't have came in time, I now have to research for ANOTHER laptop to replace the Compal IFL90, and order it; somehow hoping it ships to me before the deadline that has now become 11 days closer...those 11 idle days...sigh. -
Not only that but we don't know how the Sager queue is managed so even if you get a number now, you won't know what it really means and you won't know that the number won't change. From our perspective, the only thing that should matter to know where we are in the queue is the date the order was put in and that should not change. But Sager wants to maximize profits. If things continue to go the way they are going, Sager may have to decide not on the basis of date but on some other basis how to allocate the shipments they are getting from Compal. If you have 20 customers waiting for a laptop and 10 units to ship, whom should they ship it to? 10 people are not going to get their laptop no matter how the pie is cut. While I'm sure dates should be part of a formula used to allocate the laptops, other variables might matter to Sager more than the date. The incentive to maximize profits can lead to a very different outcome than what a customer would like.
My basis for saying this is that while I was working as an engineer this is precisely the kind of decision that the company I worked for had to make. As long as there's enough capacity to satisfy everyone, everybody's happy but when there's a capacity problem, some harsh decisions have to be made. Let's say I have two customers. I gave the same date to both. However, I have a capacity problem and won't be able to provide delivery to both. I'll be able to deliver to one but not both. What do I do? What if one customer has a contract with me that will bring in 10x the profit that the other will? I take care of the most profitable customer first. I'm simplifying here because there are much more variables that enter into the decision. For one thing, the word "profitable" incorporates a lot of variables. Still, this is basically how it goes.
In the Sager case, Sager is probably not looking at end users individually but at the resellers through which they are getting orders. There are probably some resellers that are more profitable to them than others. It is in Sager's financial interest to favor the orders put through those resellers rather than those put through resellers that are not as profitable.
I've mentioned at least two queues earlier because there are even more variables than that. (I'm intentionally ignoring the possibility that Bizcom is part of the decision making for the moment to try to keep things a bit simpler.) Because from Compal's perspective, Sager is just one customer among many. Again Compal has to decide whether it makes sense for them to favor Sager over other customers, and so on and so forth. Actually, Compal already made such decision. The IFL90 was supposed to begin full scale production before the Dell 1420, 1520, 1720 but a supply problem delayed the start of production. A capacity conflict occurred: should they favor Dell or their own line? They favored Dell. It's a matter of profit. (Maybe Dell had the possibility for legal action if Compal delayed but legal fallout can also be analyzed in terms of loss of profit.)
If you know a vendor has enough capacity, you can be confident about the dates they give you. However, if you know a vendor has a capacity problem, all bets are off. We all know that in the case of the IFL90, there's a capacity problem. -
Well put Lemur. +1
-
Lamp ur stealing MY +1's
so +1 for u lamp and +2 for Lemur -
wait, someone before mentioned that they had previously ordered a WSXGA+ IFL 90, called up, said they needed it before august 17th, and was informed that this was unlikely, and had to change his/her order...
can donald or someone confirm this-
as I ordered a WSXGA+ in the first week of june, and I to need it before august 20th... It still says shipping late july on powernotebooks.com, but if someone called and was told that they wont get it until after mid august.. then I need to change my order, can someone clarify this situation? -
Only a reseller can give you an authoritative answer. Call a reseller.
Edit: Donald is a reseller but I can see one of two things happening. Either he'll post something that deals the situation in general terms or he'll tell you to call him to get specifics based on what you want to order. -
-
Here is what I suspect, and only Donald could really answer this.....
The gentleman (iniquus) that canceled his order had only ordered it 11 days ago. Now, if you look at it as a waiting que, you and I should be one of the first to get their laptops (I ordered mine June 4th). Assuming that there will not be enough IFL90s in Powernotebooks first shipment to cover ALL orders, we would in all logical sense get ours first, followed by the guy that ordered his 11 days ago. The problem is that the guy that ordered his recently would have to wait for the next batch, so I can see why if you just ordered it that you probably will not see it until the end of August.
This is how I am looking at the situation anyhow. I have been waiting 46 daysversus 11 days.
Cripes... have I really been waiting that long?????? -
B.t.w., the screen is almost correct. I ordered a glossy one, my supplier didn't have otherwise, but it came in matte. Lucky me  -
-
Uhg... I was just about to place an order for a WSXGA IFL90 barebone with nothing in it from Xoticpc, but decided to check these forums first.
Is it really this bad? And if I order tomorrow, I probebly wouldn't see my notebook til september would I?
I was hoping to get one atleast by the end of this month.
Are there any other 8600GT or better DX10 barebone notebooks that I wouldnt have to wait for? -
I hope Compal ships some of those matte WSXGA screens over here soon. Enough so I can be in the first shipment. -

As did I...and I will probably continue every 15 minutes every day till some good news arrives.
-
Stevenio- That is wonderful! Be sure to post your thoughts on Wednesday when you get it!
I ordered my laptop just 3 days ago, and I ordered the WXGA (1280 x 800). I need to be able to comfortably read for hours at a time online for distance courses, along with playing some games. My salesperson knows that I have to have a laptop by the 2nd week of August at latest for school. He was assuring that he felt this would ship by the first week of August and told me to call in 10 days to check on status. My biggest concern is that I will have run out of time IF the system is faulty in some fashion and I have to send it back for repair.
It's understandable the people are going to get upset when they have parted with their money a month or so before getting their goods. This situation has a huge trickle down effect for every company that uses these parts and I feel the Compal/Sager re-sellers are going above and beyond what's necessary to keep everyone here informed. I thank them for their efforts. -
I checked my email too ha ha.

Ok, so I am going to double post...shoot me if you like but here is our official announcement:
"We just received our first shipment of the WSXGA+ (1680x1050) screens, but we only got a very few. We now expect we will receive yet another shipment next week and hopefully all pre-orders will ship by the end of July or at the latest in early August."
Sager received their first few as well, and they also hope to maintain the same shipping schedule as ours. -
Sweet! But define pre-order. Is this beginning of July and earlier? Or everything until a few days ago?
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Everything up to the day we start shipping. Once we start shipping the WSXGA+ (we are already shipping the WXGA) then by definition they are no longer in the "pre-order" status.
WXGA+ is about 2 weeks behind. -
Excellent news. Thanks for the wicked-fast reply Donald!
-
That's great news...I ordered a WXGA in hopes that I'll get it before WSXGA+, I may consider modifying my order because of this good news.
-
I just hope the WXGA+ come in early.
-
Here's hoping I'm in an early shipment.
-
-
Ordered mine June 4th. 47 days ago.
As long as I know that they are now coming I'm cool with that. Sure hope it is worth the wait.
The folks at Powernotebooks have been very good to work with and I trust Don's and Ron's opinion about this machine, especially the matte screen.
Looking forward to getting a shipping notification. -
They received mah monies on June 13th.
Hoping that's pretty early -
You must have amazing eyesight. -
i ordered July 5th with WXGA but 4 gigs, hopefully early August or if i am lucky end of july
-
Well it looks like I will not have anyone to sign for my laptop on Wednesday
UPS comes around here typically 2-3, and the only person over 21 will be out.
What to do..what to do
Steven -
Since when do u have to be 21 to sign for UPS? Or are u saying everyone else is way to young??? lol
-
-
Well the person is rescheduling their plans, so looks like it will be signed for hehe. Now to find my copy of windows..
Steven -
Yeah you don't have to be 21 to sign. I have had my 11 year old sister sign for my stuff before. lol
Tim -
I ordered my WSXGA+ on june 7th, hoping I will get it before august, but I think thats unlikely, taken its already the 21st of july.
Can someone clarify as to someone wouldnt want to order the highest resolution screen, other than the $175 extra?? I am sort of unclear as to the specific differences in the 3 screens.. could someone please clarify? -
Well for me it's because I have issues seeing text with that high of a resolution. I picked WXGA+ because it's a nice middle ground. WXGA is a little bit too big, but the difference between 256MB and 512MB of VRAM convinced me to stick with WXGA+. Unfortunately it seems as though my order with that resolution will be the longest of the three.
-
Some people like smaller resolutions so they can game in native resolution with the smaller resolution to peak performance.
But honestly I think WSXGA+ is a great place to fall on with resolution.
Plus with the more pixels, the less AA will have to be on. -
I elected to go for the WSXGA+ screen because of the reviews that it received on the HEL80. Also, after an extensive discussion with Donald at PNB I was convinced that the matte screen would be better for me. I don't believe that the 1440x900 screen was even an option for me at that time so it was an easy decision over the only other screen which was a glossy. Not sure if the WXGA+ is gloss or matte.

Sorry folks but for expensive laptops we always ship (and so does pretty much everyone else) with an Adult (21) signature required. ID will be required so please don't be disappointed when the UPS driver will not accept anything less.
-
Ah okay, thanks for letting us know. It is kinda funny though that I won't be able to sign for my own laptop(I am 19). LOL I will just make my mom do it.
Tim -
woah really? even if ur the card holder as in who paid for it?
guess i gotta have my mom sign too
Is that the same for xotic too Justin? -
You can fight in a war yet you can't sign for a stupid laptop lol.
-
hahah, ur right. Aint that something
