secure boot is the problem
only solution would be to backup uefi and modify it to disable secureboot then reflash it back

Thanks for giving it a try Shawn. Do these come with the educational software pre-installed, or just vanilla Windows? (Mine is coming Monday.)

Just Windows. Cameras do work with basic software.
No way to disable secureboot that I have found.
Might be different as these were sold to schools. Maybe these were never sold retail?
Another possible solution is to partition the drive and TOTALLY wipe it clean. That might get it to boot Linux. I doubt it, but it's worth a try for someone. I'm not volunteering for that.
Also I do have a link for some different UEFI/BIOS firmware. Might work, might build a brick.

New UEFI Firmware Features
The Stone Classmate 3 like many new tablets has been designed to provide the latest firmware features including:
- Rapid boot times (including support for Windows Fastboot).
- Support for Windows 8 secure boot.
- Support for other recent industry standards which include security, power management and compatibility.
- Support for Windows 8.1 x86 only.
The "BIOS setup" screen may look very similar to setup screens of previous models, but the BIOS code underneath is very different to models of just a few years ago.
As a Windows 8.x only unit, the Classmate 3 does not support legacy BIOS compatibility modes. This is a reflection upon the industry'sdrive to improve the usability and features of new systems, albeit at the cost of reducing legacy support.
What Does this Mean in Terms of Installing an Operating System?
This means that the operating system you want to install needs to support UEFI features, such as the GPT ("GUID Partition Table")method of disk partitioning. Windows 8.x supports this method. The older "master boot record" or MBR method of partitioning hard drives is not supported by the Classmate 3.
Note:This means that Windows 8.x images created in MBR mode cannot be used on the Classmate 3 until the boot loader has been reconfigured to use UEFI. Additionally, we always recommend the preparation of fresh software images for each model of machine you plan to deploy. For more information on this, please contact Stone support.
Installing Windows Again From Scratch
UEFI only support means that if you want to install a new, fresh copy of Windows 8.x, you must use an ISO to USBtool which can create the USB pen drive for use by UEFI systems, i.e. the disk formatting method is GPT.
One tool that can do this, for example, is Rufus.
What About Disk Imaging Software?
Methods of disk imaging also need to support the GPT partitioning method in order to boot. For example, if you have a Ghost 2.5.1 (11.5.1) bootable CD or pen drive based on Window Vista (Windows PE 2.0), this will not boot on the Classmate 3, as Windows Vista does not support GPT partitioning. You will not be able to actually boot from the CD or pen drive.
It is recommended on the Classmate 3 to use bootable media made using Windows 8.1, or Windows PE 5.0.
So How Can I Image the Classmate 3?
Stone can pre-install your choice of software image at our factory, saving you time in the deployment of your new equipment. If you are a network manager or technician you can also use the resources below to modify your existing imaging tools - where possible - to support UEFI systems such as the Classmate 3.
Alternatively, a potentially easier solution is to use tools within Windows 8 to create a Windows System Image onto an external hard disk. This will allow you to backup a system to be used as a master image and then restore the image onto other system.
A third party tutorial on this process is available here.
Tip: When working with the Classmate 3, use the F2 key to access BIOS setup by tapping the F2 key right from the moment you turn the unit on. Alternatively, use F11 to access the boot menu.
General Information on Modifying Existing Tools
The Classmate 3 does not have a wired LAN interface. This means that system images either need to be transferred using a USB pen drive or hard drive, or by using an optional USB3 to Gigabit LAN adapter (such as Stone part code CABUSB-224).
Ghost Solutions Suite 2.5.1 (11.5.1)
You will need to transfer your Ghost software to a Windows PE 5.0 environment. Please note however that Ghost 11.5.1 does not supportdisks larger than 2TB in size.
Short instructions:
(Advanced Users Only)
- Rework your Ghost media so that it runs off Windows PE 5.0 x86 (32-bit).
- Add the drivers for the Stone USB/LAN adapter into the boot image.
- Add the drivers for the Intel I/O Technologies (so that the Classmate 3 keyboard functions).
- Connect your Ghost Pen drive (based on Windows PE 5.0) to one of the available USB ports.
- Connect the USB/LAN adapter into the other available USB port (you will need the dock connected to have 2 USB ports in total available).
- Tap the F11 key from power on to go into the Boot Menu and boot from the USB HDD (the pen drive).
- (Alternatively, tap the DEL key from power on to go into the Setup Menu).
- Run Ghost as normal to upload or download images over the network.
- When you have deployed the image, you will then need to use the command prompt to run the BCDBOOT command to fix the boot loader. For example, from the driver letter of the destination, runbcdboot w:\windows /s: w: /f UEFI (where W is the drive letter of the destination)
SCCM / Microsoft Deployment Toolkit
We have provided a link below to a Windows PE 5.0 image which will allow you to execute an imaging script over the network through the use of a mapped drive.
Method 1 - Use MDT WinPE Images -Short Instructions
(Advanced Users Only)
- Modify your x86 Windows PE 5.0 generated boot images to include driver support for the USB/LAN adapter.
- Also add the drivers for the Intel I/O Technologies (so that the Classmate 3 keyboard functions).
- You will then need to transfer the boot image to a USB pen drive, or use PXE Boot:
- PXE Boot is only available to PXE Servers which support EFI and X86 clients. This excludes Windows Server 2008R2 but includes Windows Server 2012 (for more information see here).
- To support x86 PXE boot, you will need to use a supported USB/LAN adapter such as CABUSB-224, which is a USB3 / Gigabit model (USB\VID_0B95&PID_1790). NOTACC-402 is not supported by the Classmate 3 for PXE Boot.
- The Classmate 3 needs to be running BIOS 1.04 or later to support PXE Boot on the CABUSB-224.
- Your Windows 2012 WDS server will need to have a Windows x86 boot image configured (x86uefi).
- You will likely need to convert the boot image to an ISO file and then deploy the ISO file to a USB pen driveusing a program such as Rufus or ISO2USB.
- Boot the Classmate 3 from the pen drive with the USB/LAN adapter also connected.
- On a system used for IT administration (for example, not the Classmate 3 itself) download the package which contains the image and the image writing program.
- Extract the package.
- Attach a blank USB pen drive of at least 2GB in sizeto the system.
- Install the imaging program and then run it.
- Select the .IMG file and the drive letter of the USB pen drive.
- Click the Write button to write the image to the pen drive.
- Take the completed pen drive to the Classmate 3 and plug it in.
- When the pen drive has booted, you will get two programs:
- A Command Prompt - use this to run tools such as DISM.
- PE Network Manager - use the Network drives tab to map a network drive to a drive letter.
- To map the network drive you will need:
- To select a drive letter, such asM:
- The path to the network share in the form\\server\sharename
- Username: <username to access the share>
- Password: <password for the above user>
- Once you have mapped a network drive, use the command prompt to start your deployment script.
Method 1 - Use Modified Boot or InstallImages -Short Instructions
(Advanced Users Only)
- Ensure you are using x86 Windows PE 5.0 boot or install images in your WDS environment.
- Add the drivers for the Stone USB/LAN Adapter
- Add the drivers for the Intel I/O Technologies (so that the Classmate 3 keyboard functions)
- Connect the USB/LAN Adapter to the USB3.0 port on the Classmate 3.
- You will then need to transfer the boot image WIM file to a USB pen drive, and boot the Classmate 3 from the pen drive, or use PXE boot.
- ?PXE Boot is only available to PXE Servers which support EFI and X86 clients. This excludes Windows Server 2008R2 but includes Windows Server 2012 (for more information seehere).
- To support x86 PXE boot, you will need to use a supported USB/LAN adapter such as CABUSB-224, which is a USB3 / Gigabit model.

Sounds like more bother than it is worth! Maybe Secure Boot will make Windows less of a virus magnet? At least boot sector viruses (aka rootkits).
(I'm not holding my breath) -
If your really interested. The 3E uses a Phoenix Securecore bios. Do some research on that.
In my opinion it's not worth the trouble. Win 10 runs very nicely on a 3E.
Secure boot is not about virus's. It's about subtly squeezing Linux out. Make Windows units more like Apple. -

I ran
WSUSoffline win10 updates from a usb stick I setup
then O&O win 10 to remove spyware and such
then Classic shell
then oldexplorernew.
Finished up with Ultimate windows tweaker
totally disabled windows updates with one of those
Win 10 runs nicely once I cleaned it up. Even have it on my CF 19mk6. -
Shawn,
Does your Win 10 install have a missing driver for:
AirplaneMode HID Mini-driver for Virtual Keyborad Device? -
I don't believe there are any missing drivers. I will look later after work, if I remember to.

That is the drivers I used. Everything works except that bad driver for:
"AirplaneMode HID Mini-driver for Virtual Keyborad Device"
It does not seem to affect anything, except Windows "Actions recommended" shows a yellow flag. -
Just dont use the 3E on an airplane. Jets are ok..

- Key words ACPI HID i2C PNP0C50 GPIO
I have MX-16 booting to the password.
The first half second 'after' grub an error flashes by relating to ACPI. ... can't evaluate crs...means an "ACPI issue". Here's some light reading. http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-i2c/msg09018.html
This is the same 1/2 second in which the keyboard and touchpad quit functioning....so no LiveUSB of MX-16.1 yet. That efi boot is quick then screeches to a halt.
The tablet part might work if I can get a OSK to load with the password box....because touch works!
Now that I have the key words figured out it's back to VM so see how it is dealt with there. Probably Windows 8.1 loads the drivers and Oracle links to that input. 'cause the keyboard and touchpad work!
Yeppers>>>>On VM it shares 8.1 keyboard and touchpad. But clunky...needing to up the ram used by VID/VHD.
Funny thing is 8.1 wants to format the USB...but the 3E boots from the same stick. I'm running live in CF-53 with the same stick as we speak. (not in efi mode)
I've been writing this on and off for three days (NIGHTS)
These tablets are very usable as shipped with 8.1 Pro. So of course I want Linux.Shawn likes this. -
if you want to chance making a brick, i can give more links on that securecore issue and linux
-
Here's gparted .....doing this again I would up the fat16 partition to 100Mib. I formatted this a couple weeks ago. Don't know why, but it seems to work.
Windows 8.1 will report it as USB needs formatted! Same machine will boot from it.
My tweaked a little 3E will boot from it in uefi mode. (safe everything off) and as stated above I am running this 53J off the same stick in legacy_boot mode. It just works, ask someone else why.
Some very good advise with 8.1: RUN LIVEUSB BUT DO NOT INSTALL IT. BRICKS ARE VERY LIKELY TO RESULT. (author unknown)
Double post apology. Too much going on to put this in the same post as the last one.Attached Files:

Did I tell you my liveUSB works with a usb keyboard?
Next step is to sort the broadcomm wireless. That's what I am reading about now.
acpi keyboard and touchpad is a fail for now.....stepping away from it for a bit. -
"... can't evaluate crs...means an "ACPI issue" .
that aint what it means to me ... it means ... err ... uuummm ...
man , i just had it on the tip of my tongue !

ECS TL10IE2
They are a 3E.
The TL10IE2 is the name ECS gave them. ECS is who made them for Panasonic. -
Well... I got one of these on the bay. It's actually in pretty nice shape for what it is. The features are kind of cool. It has Win8 installed with no COA... So I'll have to work around that. So it sounds like I can't just install W10 from the USB and no COA means no upgrade.
Meh... It's for kids anyway... I'll load classic shell and be done with it. -
Boot from win10 usb and the upgrade has zero issues.
-
just ordered one up ... waiting for conformation email .
aaannnddd ... thar it 'tis .
the picture on ebay makes it look like the machine was modified for/by a stoner ...

the "left and right" remind me of something a friend (from my younger and wilder days) said :

But 29 minus 2 is 27.....
I must admit I am amazed at the traffic this 3E thread is getting....They are very cool little 2 in 1's. And they run win 10 32bit like a champ. -
I was playing around with this as the seller said he would send me Win10 on a USB. I wanted to make sure I could boot from the USB. It would appear the holding the up-volume and power button briefly puts one into the BIOS... Which looks very similar to other Phoenix BIOS'... Well... Limited... But it does give you boot options!
I've read this thread over many weeks and can't remember if that info was given. -
yeah ... plenty of hits ... 5.7K so far .
i want to see if i can get android to run reliably on it .
the latest version is 7.xx ...
but from what i understand , it is the release candidate flavor .
with some of the older bios menus , there was a "joe consumer" access and also a higher level/tech access . -
Larry,
message Jeff. He got one to boot a live Linux usb. No idea how he managed to do it.
By Android I am assuming you mean an Android distro of Linux? -
i am thinking along these lines :
http://www.jide.com/remixos
i found this article while looking fo some information :
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/10/building-android-a-40000-word-history-of-googles-mobile-os/
looks like i'm going to settle in with a large glass of milk and a stack of chocolate chip cookies .
there are a butt-load (a real measurement of rocket fuel) of programs written and i can see where there is much more offered in a couple of places rather than scouring the web for programs .
my main concern is gps navigation ... of the type that enables me to have flexibility of map types and real-time data gathering .
if the pad is put on a carrier (say , verizon) , i can download pertinent air navigation data . -
I tried Remix but I didn't like it, cloudready might work also. I am working on grabbing a couple of the 3E's I listed. I got a really good Win 10 install minus all the garbage today. Put it on a T410 and it's working fine.
-
i tried remix a year or so ago ... i was not really impressed with it .
hopefully they have modded the gui to be more like a couple of the popular (as in "it sells") ones out there .
the gui on my s5 is quite workable , save for want of a couple of things and the ability to easily get rid of that embedded *&(&^&#$@#$&^@!()*%$ " *peel remote* .
i will never buy another phone that has "peel remote" installed .
even the gui on the F1-Z1 is pretty darn good ... too bad the display cannot be upgraded and run a higher version of android .
there are 9 units left ... i am the only purchaser so far . -
the machine should arrive on 18OCT .
shipped via USPS . -
I just bought 2 from him, he only has a couple left.
-
according to the tracking stuff ...
the machine was sitting in minneapolis last night at 2030 .
so , there is a chance that it will be delivered today . -

I just saw the delivery driver and grabbed a photo.
toughasnails and Toughbook like this. -
After several
hours with these tablets here is an update.
1. MXLinux will boot with an error but with no keyboard or touchpad. You could say it works fine if you use a USB keyboard.
Keyboard and touch work 'through' grub and disappear immediately thereafter with an error. Keywords: acpi, crs,i2C,hid and pnp. Look it up.
2. 8.1 works fine.
I ignore the fancy cell phone looking splash screen and work from desktop.
3. My personal usage is via MX-16.1 Linux run through Oracle Virtual Box. I use a 8 GB virtual hard drive. The local (8.1) features like onscreen keyboard are usable as well as wireless, keyboard, touch-pad and touchscreen.
4. A catch 22 here is IF (through Linux) you got the regular keyboard and touch-pad to work then you would have to sort the issues with Broadcom. It's difficult to set up via Linux.
I have not tried Ubuntu because "I want to do it my way".
-
The 2 I ordered will be here Monday and I'll be able to get them on Tuesday......I hope.
-
hmmm ... i checked the front porch and rear deck around noon ... nothing .
i checked the website ... said it had been delivered .
so , i figured i better get to the post office and see what was going on .
i thought that the regular carrier (i know him) had the day off and someone else took his route .
they did not know at the post office ... but i had to return with the tracking number .
i went home and decided to check the garage driveway instead of the normally used side driveway .
yessir ... there is was , along with a package from shawn .
i had to run over to a friend's place and i took the machine with me ...
he wants one .
of course , the seller is out of stock .
now , how to load android on it and what flavor . -
I bought 2 of the 3 he had left.
-
just tried android 6.xx ...it was already on a usb drive and laying around ... a leftover from the above mentioned trials .
it loaded ok and connected but , i did not go any further than the live mode .
aaannnddd after about 20 minutes ... it choked and seized up .
maybe android 7 will work better .
i might give linux mint a try in the morning . -

What kind of shape was it in ?
-
the usps stuff-it box was caved/crushed on one end but the unit and power supply survived .
the unit is pretty clean ... if it were not for the district school system branding and a couple other things (although nicely done) , they would be grade "A" units .
the hot pink magic marker style markings shown it the pictures on ebay shows promise of being able to be removed without damaging the keys .
were it not for the marker scribblings , it would be about like walking into a store and buying one off the shelf .
the keys have a slight texturing to them but they are not worn nor packed with finger goo and cheezewhiz .
the screen and bezel have no scratches ... not even "cleaning" scratches !
i have no idea on the battery condition ... yet .
the only thing included is the wall-wart power supply ... there is no temperature probe or anything else .
i am (still) transitioning my old windows machine stuff to the windows side of this dual boot (stop gap measure) machine before i can do much more with the OS loading side .
(i do not want to boot into windows on this machine if i can help it)
i am going to investigate using the flash drive creation tools in 'nix to see what i can come up with .
the first order of business is going to be testing the latest flavor of android from (possibly) here :
https://forum.xda-developers.com/
i got this unit with the idea of being able to take it on the plane and it looks like it will fill the bill nicely .
a key issue was/is the power input ... and it is (fortunately) 12VDC .
however , the connector on the pad and keyboard is wimpy ... a din connector about 2.2mm in diameter .
i am betting it will not take long to hail these out .
(not a good thing in lower grade levels)
on the other hand ... this might mean that there will be some cheap units on the market eventually .
also , for my uses , upgrading the internal memory is going to be a must .
3E Which OS do you use that works . Linux Windows ?
