weeeelll ... poop on a rope .![]()
i am going to give up on installing android until the movie comes out , and pretty much the same for linux mint .
sooner or later there will be fixes for these two OSes .
in the meantime , i am thinking that W10 w/ classic smell is going to be the way to go .
somehow , i have a notion that the uefi/bios was written to lockout a bunch of stuff ... then there is the case of drivers for 'nix and android .
i forgot to mention that with the copy of remix OS i tried , the microphone did not work ... don't know if the sound worked or not ... didn't get that far .
sooo ... it looks like windblows 10 it is then .
from the big book of AA : "we ceased fighting everything and everyone ..." .
at this point in time , those are some very sage words .

do not try to load a 64 bit iso , even though at the intel site it says that the upc is 64 bit .
32 bit is the only architecture that will work .
my copy of W8.1 does not have the option to bypass/skip the key entry .
i dl'ed a fresh copy of W10 and put it on a usb stick using the efi mode in rufus .
am now going after the drivers . -
hmmm ...
looks like there are several drivers to dl ...
there is some stuff from intel for management of the procc .
a bunch of non-related drivers (bluetooth , keyboard , etc.)
looks like most can be had in a single package ... *intelsoc*
now ... to disable the "auto brightness" . -
I too gave up trying to load via usb any other system. Settled on how to get Win10 upgrade from 8.1. Google the upgrade via assistive technology clause. It was a free upgrade and now mine is running Win10. Keeping it to watch movies with and play with Sheepman’s Oracle VM suggestion.
One of the least complete working TB I’ve ever gotten.

hey , do you know what happens when the pad is not securely locked in the cradle and you pick it up ?
yeeeaaaahhh ...
i dunno , i think it might be a good idea to pick up a spare dock .
i checked the activation on mine ... it auto-activated with the embedded key .
i am already missing "google play"/app store .
i can actually navigate faster on my s5 .
yeah ... when i get rid of this migraine and some time , i am going to see if i can get a copy of android 7 to install and run without doing the ol' *choke-n-puke* .
the voice recognition in cortana cannot hold a candle to the one that google developed . -
hmmm ...
the "windows update" is not .
it started to dl updates and then choked .
i have tried the repair service that is included ... twice ... and it has not worked .
yeah , welcome to windows . -
two more go-arounds with the (cough cough) service and three reboots later ...
it finally looks like it is going to work .
it was stuck on 10% for about 20 minutes .
i am not impressed nor amused .
i have not found (yet ?) any informative display of the update downloads ... M$ looks to have gone one more step down the path of treating users like sheep .
yessir ... i am going to make an effort to at least see what can be done to get a copy of android working on this pad .
at least the copy of android i loaded did so in a relatively smooth manner .
i think these machines would be better if they ran an android OS .
i have to say that google knew where the ursus americanus defecated in proximity to a large area of fagopyrum esculentum when they started developing the android OS .
making windows *mobile* is tantamount to putting a dress on a pig and entering a beauty contest ... even with lipstick and eye shadow , it is a loosing proposition .
hmmm ...
the machine restarted , so i tried searching for updates .
a message said that it could not search for updates because there were pending updates being installed ; "restarting your computer may help" .
i aint holding my breath . -
I have a very groovy copy of Win 10 minus all the garbage if you want it, the one I had ran great on Win 8.1.
-
is your copy "stripped out" ?
shawn has a program he linked to that duct tapes certain communication paths of information .
think : W98-2 lite .
(now there was a great OS , i patched the snot out of it to keep it viable)
i am either going to have to get another ssd or have to reload windows if my attempt at getting android to work on the unit does not pan out .
i am thinking that another ssd is the way to go .
to be honest , i am not all that jazzed with W10 on this thing . -
does anyone know what those three gold plated , spring loaded contacts in the stylus retainer/cavity are for ?
"Best Not least....uggggggg"
freudian slip perhaps ?
(i didn't know he was a cross dresser like j.e.hoover)
-
-
shawn told me that the ram and ssd in these are not upgradeable .
terrific ... i hope the ssd is capable of being imaged without some special software . -
I just inserted a standard win 8 or 10 usb and it booted from the usb and installed to the internal drive with no surprises.
As far as I know it is a standard ssd but soldered on.
Ubuntu "will' work if you get around the Tiano securecore Bios.

From what I read, the drive will need to be completely erased and then you start over and jump a few hoops.

Jeff may have the best idea. run your OS in a virtual machine under win8

i am thinking that because that copy of android 6 that i happened to have laying around loaded without hesitation that android 7 has a chance of loading and working .
imaging the drive should be no big deal then . -
Excuse the reflection please.
This is a shot of MX16 on a virtual hard drive.
Firefox will run from the Linux box or drop down and run Chrome from the Desktop tool bar. The built -in keyboard is accessible with a click.....or use onscreen keyboard for Function keys. I'm amazed how good it works.
Odds and ends:
To shut down from 8.1 when accessing bios....[Cmd] shutdown -s (run as Admin)
Start and immediately tap [del].
IMPORTANT: IF INSPECTING A PROPERLY FORMATTED UEFI LIVEUSB IN A WINDOWS MACHINE BOOTED VIA BIOS---THE WINDOWS PROGRAM WILL NOT READ THE DRIVE. THE SAME STICK WILL BOOT THROUGH UEFI. I inspect them with gparted in Linux. JUST A FYI.

hmmm ...
i came across this while looking for something else :

ok ...
i dl'ed android 7.2rc from here :
http://www.android-x86.org/
i loaded it on a flash drive using rufus , set to gpt for uefi / ntfs
after a couple of tries and the machine ignoring the flash drive (wth ? the other copy worked the first time) .
i went into whatever passes for a bios and took a look .
the first thing on the list was the windows bootloader/manager ... i moved that down near the bottom and put the usb hdd as the first item .
the internal ssd was third on the list ...
i figured that this would give me the best chance of booting the flash drive .
--- it worked ---
the *live* drive ran just fine ... the display was correct and the touch screen was accurate .
the buttons worked as they should .
i do not know if the microphone works ... i screwed up during the set-up prompts and told it not to record audio ... this may be the cause of no response from the voice recognition .
i have not checked the audio output ... i forgot to while trying to backtrack the microphone screw up .
i bounced around a lot looking for different settings , maybe for a half hour ... the machine did not choke .
sooo ...
at least it is promising .
i did check for "android on intel" ... at one time they were hot-n-heavy on developing their equipment/processors and doing some porting to work with android , along with the google boys .
that kind of cooled down ... no bets on why ... but google did come out with their own line of portable android based devices .Shawn likes this. -
Does auto-rotate work?
-
you can move the boot order? hmmm
-
rotate does not work
gps not found (might have been the program)
microphone does not work
the sound does work
i will post at the X86 forums to see if there are any fixes .
my vision is fuzzy ... heading for horizontal land . -
Found out what those 3 contacts in stylus holder are. From the manual, this little computer can come with a passive or an active stylus. Those contacts are to recharge an active stylus. From the manual:

that makes sense .
there is a temperature sensor probe that plugs into the headphone jack
i am thinking that there is an internal analog to digital converter that could be made use of . -
I got my 2 today and I'm grabbing a copy of Windows 8.1 32 bit right now, and no, 64b bit will not boot. Wish me luck.
-
yeah ... good luck .
i dunno ... i jumped right onto W10 ... it worked and activated .
there is a driver pack ... one updated at the site shawn linked to .Shawn likes this. -
From reading that instruction page and some research it seems the problem is GPT or rather getting a linux distro that will boot on uefi-gpt. Lots of them will boot uefi, but not gpt.
-
maybe i could try using rufus and make it non-gpt .
-
I still have a question as to whether or not those who have installed Windows 10 are missing a driver (AirplaneMode HID Mini-driver for Virtual Keyborad Device). I have reinstalled Windows 10 version 1607 32 bit and 1703 32 bit. Everything works perfectly, including Airplane mode using the Fn + F1 keys.
But .... device manager shows that driver not working right.
EDIT: Thanks to Shawn for posting driver links in post # 11 of this thread!

I loaded 8.1 on unit #1 but no sound, working on it. #2 is loading 10 as we speak. No sound on the second one either, the driver package sorta worked, 2-3 would not install. So the struggle continues.

These drivers work! I have sound now on Windows 8.1 -
These 3Es are surprisingly snappy running Windows 10, considering they have Atom processor and 2 GB RAM. I had expected Windows to be very sluggish.
-
there have been 15 views of my post over at the x86 forums ... no replies .
i might try a couple of different builds for a couple of pads/tablets and see what comes of it .
what's the worst that could happen ? -
The key appears to be finding a 32bit, UEFI, GPT version of Linux or android, just for the fun of it and because Win 10 is being a pita, I'm going to try Win 7 on the other one. The 8.1 is running and all drivers installed.
I must say these have outstanding touchscreens. -
Talk to Shawn about his early experience...

i have looked around and i have found reference to being able to "change" the settings of the bios/uefi via W8/W10 .
after a couple of hours of chasing stuff down , my brains starts hurting and i just stop .
yep , the touchscreen is nice , i seen mention of them being dual touch ... i tried with a rf pen ... nada ... maybe a missing driver or a setting .
but ... uncndl1 said that the pen holder pins were for charging ... sooo ... this means that the rf input side of the screen is *active* and is looking for an actual self-generated signal from the pen .
something else that started happening ...
a long string of single letters ... just as if a key were depressed .
i am willing to bet that this machine was never used ...
the hot pink dry erase that was used to mark it has started wearing off .
i was going to throw in the towel on the android side ...
but a look through the M$ *app store* produced lousy results on gps/navigation programs .
this is in comparison to the google play store that has literally hundreds to choose from . -
My research showed that Linux was a dead end as there were no native Linux 32 bit that would boot gpt unless you wanted to get into some serious tweaking of the ISO and so on, same with Windows 7. Just thought of it, how about the chromium OS? I know it can use a lot of android apps but I have not looked at the 32 bit side. Time to do some research. There is also Cloudready.
I have them both running, one is 8.1 and the other is 10, they are headed to the Philippines next year for the kids along with some motion tablets. -
https://www.chromium.org/chromium-os/chromiumos-design-docs/disk-format
There is a LOT of information on this page,I'm not a programming guy so it's a little over my head. Have at it.
x86 EFI BIOS
The Extensible Firmware Interface is a BIOS replacement originally developed by Intel® for its Itanium® systems and later expanded to include x86 and other architectures. While not enthusiastically embraced by the Linux kernel developers, it offers some advantages over legacy BIOS and is becoming more widely used, especially for 64-bit x86 systems.
EFI BIOS boots like this:
- The BIOS switches into protected mode almost immediately and then switches into 64-bit mode (IA-32e mode).
- The BIOS expects the disks to be formatted using a GUID Partition Table (GPT) which can contain a very large number of partitions, not just four. Each GPT partition is identified by two GUIDs: a type and a unique ID. The BIOS looks for a partition that:
- Has a type of "EFI System Partition" (28732ac1-1ff8-d211-ba4b-00a0c93ec93b)
- Is formatted as a FAT filesystem
- Contains a file named \efi\boot\bootx64.efi
- That bootx64.efi file is the bootloader, which is executed as an application within the EFI BIOS environment (still in 64-bit mode). The bootloader queries the BIOS for system information using a set of registered function calls and creates the zeropage table for the kernel. It then locates the kernel, tells the BIOS that it can free any memory that won't be needed later, switches down to 32-bit mode, and jumps to the kernel at the kernel's 32-bit protected-mode entry point (the same place where the legacy Real Mode code used to jump to).

hmmm ...
interesting that the old fat32 is used ... but i digress .
the chromium OS might work ... it is made for intel-type architecture (i think) .
and as google has got to have the largest repository of "apps" (*programs* to us fossils) , then it is worth some more research and a trial installation .
and that will be a project that starts about an hour from now . -
weeelll ...
the first thing i think that is happening here :
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/download-google-chrome-os-and-run-on-a-real-computer/
is that the OS is not a ".iso" file (the most common way this type of stuff is done) but an image file ... this has to be burnt as a "dd" in rufus ... and use fat32 as the file format with the default segment size .
mind you , i think this the way it should be done .
there is an option at the site to dl a writer , but ... i did dl and installed it and there was no way to change anything ... i guess that it detects the file type and all that ...
even the "advanced mode" is still pretty blind .
i didn't trust it .
so , i'll try my way first .
ps ... writing the dd img is slower than writing the iso . -
aaannnddd , wouldn't you know it ...
i tried the usb drive i just made ... it was skipped right on by and booted into windows .
so , i went to exit and now windows says it is "getting ready" .
with the little bead chain going down the drain .
after 10 minutes , forced a shutdown and booted ... ok .
trying another writer . -
Just trying to keep you off the streets and out of trouble.....
-
uuuggghhh ...
do not try the method i did ...
for some reason (it escapes me for right now) ... when you try to write an image file to the flash drive , the drive becomes "none functional" ...
as far as erasing and using it for anything else but the image .
this makes sense ... a flag is set because an image is just that ; a snapshot of what it is your trying to do ... no changes allowed in/to the "picture" .
at any rate , the attempt to load google chrome os failed .
and i spent 30 minutes running down the code (dos commands) to clear the flagset on the device , create a primary partition and then finish it up in a *formatter program* .
yeah ... it'll keep me off the streets alright ... they lock the doors on the asylum . -
All you need to do is open chrome, got to apps and recovery. Erase recovery drive. Then format it.
-
"Erase recovery drive" ?
-
Yes, when you go to recovery in chrome, hit settings upper right and you can erase the flash drive no matter how it's formatted.
-
https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=204961&p=1065977 this guy managed to make it work.
and this (indeed I did. no success. it doesn't install grub. I succeeded with 32bit debian and manually compiling & installing drivers for wifi and touch)
Worth a try.Last edited: Oct 18, 2017 -
this is the method i tried yesterday :
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/download-google-chrome-os-and-run-on-a-real-computer/
with that write protect problem i was having , it is internal to the flash drive .
i tried going into the registry settings and adding/changing a bit set (for the comparison of the write protect) and it did not allow the drive to be formatted .
i downloaded three "formatter" programs and tried them ... no joy , even though they were supposed to "not care" if that write protect bit was set or not .
the one in windows did not even see the drive ... the other two did see the drive but reported only 1/10 of the drive capacity , and refused to format .
the last one i downloaded was from HP and would not format the drive "straight out" after installing the .img files to make it a bootable drive ...
as with the other attempts , i went into the command prompt and did these steps :
http://www.techadvisor.co.uk/how-to/storage/remove-write-protection-usb-3633096/
doing this worked to unlock the drive , but it would not go beyond that (produced an error) .
then i (finally) used this after unlocking the drive in dos :
https://hp-usb-disk-storage-format-tool.en.softonic.com/download
if i get some time today , i'll try the linux mint fix you linked to .
i still want to focus more on android as it was really designed as a mobile platform and has a huge user base and thus a very large program/app repository .
unless the linux developers (of their respective branches) come up with a working solution to this uefi/secure boot issue , the popularity is going to slip as more and more comp manufacturers go away from a traditional bios .
the fix has to be as transparent as the methods used currently with bios , e.g. ; drop a disk in and hit the go button .
there was a time when even that method was not always successful and a later release would fail to install on an older machine ...
i had to use mint9 on a few laptops several years ago , mint 8 and 10 would not work properly (failed to boot) .
well , this thread has certainly been taken to cuba .
but , in this forum , there is no section for these/this type of topic .
3E Which OS do you use that works . Linux Windows ?
