Blair,
Maybe split out all of the tech info and photos I posted. -

Blair,
Splitting off posts 1 through 47 would pull out most of the hardware info.
Thanks -
posts 101 , 102, and 109 would fit better in the other thread also
-
yeah ...
the thread split is valid .
the machine was handled by / claimed by and stamped *panasonic* , so , the technical side of of this thread has merit .
the pitfalls associated with loading a 'nix or android OS should be included ... until a cut-n-dried solution to them is found .
this will help keep others from running over the same ground ...
the more information/phrases for google to parse , the quicker others might get an answer . -
toughasnails Toughbook Moderator Moderator
Sounds good. Now what would you like me to name these two threads ??
-
How about:
Got a 3e? Info and OSs that work
and
Got a 3e? Experimenting with alternative OSsShawn likes this. -
yeppers ... something like the second phrase covers the comp first (better for searches) and leaves the OS issue open as "ongoing" .
Panasonic 3E ; information and alternative OS research .
does google parse tags ?
if it does , the other two brands could be included in them .Last edited: Oct 19, 2017Shawn likes this. -
Found another product flier that actually says it has an Atom 3745d 1.33 GHz processor (which is what mine has):

Also, I don't see that anyone has specifically stated this, but all probably know that you can turn off UEFI and Secure Boot in the BIOS.
After doing this, none of my 32 bit Linux thumbdrive installers, or Live DVDs boot anyway. -
They won't because none of them are GPT, it's quite the catch 22. Has to be 32 bit and gpt which leaves out all Linux and Windows 7. If it would boot 64 bit we would have it made.
-
Likely, the reason Linux installers don't work is because of the built-in database of 69 "Forbidden Signatures"
-
My USB drives are GPT, and 32 bit
Edit: Rufus lets you do this -
Hmmm....
Just noticed that I can select signatures to delete. Maybe can delete signatures from "Forbidden Database". Hope I don't brick it. -
I've got a spare in the interest of "science".
-
UEFI and Secure Boot seem to be an all-or-nothing deal, and I have disabled both in BIOS.
Deleted 69 "Forbidden Signatures" and a bunch more appeared. Deleted them too. So all signatures from "Forbidden Database" are gone. Still will not boot from 32 bit UEFI GPT Ubuntu Mate thumbdrive.
Tried Windows 7 32 bit thumbdrive. Didn't work.
Windows 10 still boots up and shows as "Activated". -
Good news is that removing signatures and disabling Secure Boot did not brick the 3E!
Maybe Ubuntu Mate is not UEFI, but with UEFI turned off, that shouldn't matter. I'm going to try a few more Linux Distros and see if a different one works.Last edited: Oct 20, 2017 -
Tried 32 bit Puppy Slacko 6.3.2 with EFI folder. Rufus made it with GPT selected.
No Go! -
It has to be 32 bit UEFI with gpt and 32 bit linux will not reconize gpt no matter what you make the stick with, thus no boot.
-
If you don't mind Windows 10, I'd say this is a really cheap near equivalent of Microsoft Surface 2 tablet with keyboard from a couple years ago, but with a carry handle, more rugged, and since it supports Window 10 Pro (not RT) there is a lot more software available for it. Stylus is a good size and feels nice in the hand. Handwriting recognition is pretty decent too.
But as far as I can see, Linux is locked out. I have a feeling that Secure Boot and UEFI is not truly disabled in BIOS. I hope someone proves me wrong, but for now I'm OK with Windows 10. -
i have tried phoenix os ...
https://www.fosshub.com/Operating-Systems.html
http://www.phoenixos.com/download
i finally discovered that the version based on 7.xx has been put on the back burner and instead they are going to concentrate more on 5.xx .
found the stand alone 32 bit dl and tried it ... at least it boots into grub , but where to go after that is beyond me .
the problem with these type of builds is that they are made for desktop use ... but i did find mention of a little program to take care of the rotation issue . -
-
Yes,Linux and Windows 7.
-
Currently using win10 on the 3E, 8.1 upgraded automatically
To win 10 for free. I was looking through hard drive usage and see an application that is 7GB named “windows assessment and deployment kit”
What is this and what happens if I remove it?
This kind of stuff is why I use Linux on all my Toughbooks...
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk -
basically , it is a collection of programs for looking at other machines you may have in a (say) corporate environment and being able to figure out what is needed and how to execute the installation of the software .
i do not think it is needed for running windows .
at 7 gigs ... that is a bunch ... something screwy there ... more research shows that it is around 3.3gigs new ...
i wonder if it has your machine profile in it ? -
windows assessment and deployment kit is for creating your own Windows installer. You can, for instance create a Windows install DVD that has all drivers for a particular computer.
It used to be called WAIK (Windows Automated Installation Kit). I used to use it to make XP installer disks with SATA drivers, because without doing that, the XP installer would not even detect an SATA disk on your computer without pushing a certain key (s I think) and having a floppy drive with drivers to load.Last edited by a moderator: Oct 21, 2017Shawn likes this. -
this might help with the uninstall :
http://www.uninstallhelps.com/how-to-uninstall-windows-automated-installation-kit-aik-3-0.html
i wonder why there is 7 gigs in that as opposed to 3.3 ?
maybe a more extensive program for W10 ?
man , i remember having to load the drivers for my yamaha dvd/cd player/burner when installing XP on custom builds for others ...
this was easier (over all) than using the purchased cd/dvd drive and finding out that the thing would not work .
after the OS install , i would install the purchased cd/dvd drive and load the drivers .
after some time , it became rare that a purchased drive would not work on the first fire-up .
i chalked it up to standardization and a more extensive list of drivers to start with .Last edited: Oct 21, 2017UNCNDL1 likes this. -
I'm going to try this suggestion and will let you know...

i am going to back away from the android on intel project for a while .
it has become increasingly frustrating and that is one headache more that i really do not want or need .
it was a good try but when i look at the realities of being able to purchase a decent 'droid pad for around 100 clams , i gotta admit that it is not worth the effort . -
Something I have not discussed is "LICK" from PuppyLinux. Here's the text file. I have this installed on my #1 and last night #2. It doesn't work exactly as described but it does write a lick boot-loader to bios which is pretty tricky.
Also lick disables Fast Startup.
Being fairly bald headed I have found the method to preclude hair loss is:
It's in the way the kernel "fails" to load the keyboard and touchpad in the first half second of writing the kernel. I'll keep trying someday.
-
Well... Mine came in with Win 8.1 and no working COA. My friend Daz came over and said it wouldn't work... He was supposed to send me a USB with Win10 but it hasn't arrived yet.

I'm on my CF-52 with a live persistent usb of the newest release of antiX that came out yesterday.
In anticipation of Sheepman's efforts, here is the link to download page for antiX:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/antix-linux/files/Final/antiX-17/
antiX homepage:
https://antixlinux.com/
I'm guessing he is using the 32 bit version?
Hopefully more information will follow.
Thanks Lefty -
32 bit is correct. I just tried 64 bit with no joy.
I didna want to talk about it being fairly ignorant on the subject but the 3e is 32 bit with 64 bit support. Whatever that means. "32-bit with x64 based processor." [Hold the Windows key and tap [pause]"
Fast Startup must be disabled. (Two ways)
1. Install puppy linux LICK bootloader. Writes bootloader to bios and disables fast startup.
2. Fast Startup disable. Several hits on internet for instructions. I used the answers/ microsoft windows
one. I've used both methods twice. (yeah I bought four of the little rascals)
IN THE BIOS:
QUICK BOOT "ENABLED"
SECURE BOOT OPTION "DISABLED" Hit [enter] where it says secure boot configuration.
USB must be formatted gpt. I use Dolphin Oracle's instructions from youtube. THE STICK WILL PROBABLY "NOT" BE RECOGNIZED BY WINDOWS BUT IT WILL BOOT E 3. more here later getting too confusing. Give me a call Cleve. I prefer gparted via linux over rufus....knock yerself out.---this just changed......I was not selecting the stick in final box of gparted. oopsie! Now ESP is recognized....Windows "sees" the 32 bit partition.
little hints:
1. 3E doesn't normally turn off....just goes into hidden suspend mode....which means you can't get into the bios. Holding the orange button down for 14 seconds does seem to shut it off. I set mine so anything turns it off...from POWER MANAGER. THIS IS ALSO THE PLACE TO UNCHECK THE FAST STARTUP BOX. (CAPLOCK ISSUES)
2. If antix loads without a keyboard, shut it down normally and try again.
3. Let me know when you find a way to run Broadcom 43241 from Linux. (aka Azurewave AW-AH691A) I'm tired of looking it up.
cheers
UPDATE: antiX17 has NO systemd...and KEYBOARD AND TOUCHPAD work. Should have thought of that before....systemd has a tendency to grab input devices and forgets to let them go. Real can of worms with Gobi GPS. SQUIRREL!!!

Well worth the read. I like this guy. Written from a Linux perspective. Plan on at least a half hour to peruse this missive. (if a fast reader)

"... what you think you know is likely a toxic mix of misunderstandings, misconceptions, half-truths, propaganda and downright lies. So you should probably forget it all."
ehhhh ... sort of the same thing as with the opposite sex ?
(and believe you me , i have tried to forget it all ... at least the repercussions and ramifications)
i have not gotten too far into the article (at this point) ...
(i don't know whether to read on before or after i take my meds)
what i have gathered is that it is possible to (for lack of better terms) *get around* UEFI and boot in a more *old way* and the real culprit here is the secure boot ?
at least as it applies to basically even begin to load an OS .
i am thinking that if is a relatively simple matter to re-think ones thinking when it comes to UEFI booting and putting the code monkeys to task ...
then why has there not been a great fanfare , flashing arrows and other attention drawing devices pointing to the fact that a 'nix OS has had some front-end-plastic-surgery and now loads juuuust fine on a UEFI w/ secureboot system ?
to put a fine point on it ... why has this not been done ?Last edited: Oct 26, 2017 -
Cleve.
first is to download the windows media creator.
then download the file, making sure you choose the option too save the iso.
if i recall,i used rufus to create the usb stick.SHEEPMAN! likes this. -
Loading WITH secure boot enabled is fairly recent.
The author only advocates drinking gin when reading technical diatribe.
BIOS is a thing.
UEFI is a different thing.
Secure Boot except on ARM machines is "required to be user accessible"...and not that big a deal.
I like that he doesn't argue for or against, just says use one or the other. (bios or uefi)UNCNDL1 likes this.
