    important to know.
    3E is UEFI only.
Thats why it is more challenging.
The Tiano UEFI is more difficult than most others.
These where purpose built units. NEVER sold retail.
Running Linux on these is similar to loading Android on a Windows smartphone.

Challenging is what we do. :)

Cleve, (and others) format your USB Stick on a UEFI machine. Check to see if --EFI is required in the literature (txt file)

    for me ,
the bottom line is whether or not i can easily load android (first choice) or 'nix mint (second choice) .
i can always sell the machine and get an "open" tablet (smart or phone) and then load either OS on it .

with android , there are three issues that prevent me from going forward (mentioned elsewhere) .
and the "development" sites/forums all seem to be doing their own thing .
even the version that shows the most promise suffers from lack of solid direction .

"... but the UEFI specification is quite strongly tied to GPT disks and EFI FAT32 ESPs, and this is what you’ll be dealing with in 99% of cases. Unless you’re dealing with Macs, and quite frankly, screw Macs." .
yessir ... i feel the same way .

I used rufus today after downloading antiX. Running it live on "ol' Paintball". The typing teacher got creative with the green dauber. :) Very smooth set-up.
Checking in here to grab my wireless notes. When I get the wireless up I may install 17.?...although a live USB of the mini size is not out of the question. Undecided.

And we are live on "ol Paintball". :D antiX-17 "Heather Heyer" released on 24 October 2017
The first one took a month not counting fires and wrecks. This one took an afternoon.

    The sheep are hungry.

    edit:
    1. Still working on occasional keyboard fail. It's in the way kernel grabs the driver....timing issue?
    2. antiX is handy to build LiveUSB "on the fly" Terminal commands are saved.
    3. minstall refused install. 32 bit UEFI issue. That's ok the 16gb stick is quick and Windows 8.1 is untouched.

    And so on. :end edit

    Cheers.

aaannnddd that is what M$ was hoping would be the case with W8/8.1/10 .
    :p

for grins and giggles , i just tried a stick that has a copy of android on it that loaded ok (before) , i was going to try a work-around for the gps .
after two tries , i could not get the machine to boot android .

Here is a axtiX video that explains why I like it.

I have several computers  ummm about a dozen models. LiveUSB makes sense for me and nobody does LiveUSB like antiX.

ESPECIALLY with USB3. The 3E has two USB3.0. I'm running live on two E3's and occasionally forget that a hard drive exists.

Something I want to try is loading live and using the hard drive for file storage only.

A hint on some systems is that 3.0 is an upgrade???. IOW the 2.0 work but the 3.0 do not until you upgrade or install ALL the proper packages. CF-31 is one of these when using a generic W7 install and loading drivers from a driver bundle. Watch it load and you will see the driver bundle install 3.0.

Okay, so the UEFI machine is the little paintball with Win10 running. Is there a native windows program inside win10 to do the format of usb stick?
I looked into parted, gparted, etc. to download, however the internet in these hotels is somewhat a challenge to download anything. I have the boot order etc. sorted out. Now when she boots up in the bottom left corner of screen it gives two boot options to use: Delete Key and also the F11 Key. F11 Key gets you into the boot order directly, Delete Key gets you into the entire SetUp Menu for the firmware.

I'm running two liveUSB machines. No W10 anywhere. 8.1 is fine for what I do.

The one with anitX INSTALLED boots to the EFI Shell. Struggling here. :(

I'll send a clone when I'm happy with it.

Okay, very good. What does format the USB drive on a uefi machine mean? Did you do it in VM?

Caution Construction Zone...distractions and squirrels possible....

It could be done on 8.1 or W10 on a E3. Rufus. Copy .iso to 8.1, format usb with rufus....it's different (looking at the disk with gparted) but they boot. My steps I think:
    1. copy/download .iso to E3
    2. burn to usb via rufus.

For a persistent disk use the text type set-up (for uefi). Auto or custom install renders a legacy type device. This is the grub menu with the F keys.

I don't know why but Dolphin mentions verifying uefi twice in video re:uefi install. Ignore the fact he is using VM.

Myth 1=you need to make your live usb on a uefi machine
I just booted up a live usb of MX Linux 16 snapshot from my CF-53J
Myth 2=you need to use 32 bit
I just loaded a live usb 64 bit version of MX Linux 16
As Jeff says, broadcom driver needs to be sorted out
    More information to follow

    Keyboard and touchpad:

    Cleve,
    Post results of
    Code:
    dmesg | grep pnp -i
Cut and paste from terminal is fine. PNP0501 is necessary for keyboard and touchpad. (hid, i2c devices)

Conflict of myths: 64 bit is running "legacy" not uefi. E3 doesn't "have" legacy in bios...so the strange little tablet strikes again. :D

    Thanks.

Forgot to mention that keyboard and touchpad/mouse also are working.
I can run what you ask in Terminal, but won't be able to cut and paste. I'll have to copy by hand into 53J

    Here's output [IMG]

notice that it looks like the bcm43241 is not detected i.e. does not display when running the code "lspci" or "lsusb"
I believe that the brcm80211 driver is "blacklisted" as seen in the wireless network portion of MX Tools. Maybe we just need to find out how to unblacklist it and load that driver?

I found a link that says you really need to know what chipset is on your wireless card:
    http://opensuse-guide.org/wlan.php
They go on to say that the linux kernal comes with brcm80211 driver, which DOES support
    "16.2 Recent Broadcom Chipset
    The Linux kernel comes with the brcm80211 driver by default. This driver supports bcm4313, bcm43224, bcm43224, bcm43225, bcm4329, bcm4330, bcm4334, bcm43241, bcm43235 (>= rev 3), bcm43236 (>= rev 3), bcm43238 (>= rev 3), bcm43143, bcm43242"

Just posted our question in the MX Linux Forum:

Anyone else have an idea of where to go from here?
Apparently using a usb wifi dongle solves the problem of no wifi.....

sudo lshw -c network (This revealed nothing)
nmcli radio wifi on ; rfkill list all (This revealed nothing)

Assuming you meant keyboard?? I occasionally have to boot twice and always wait for 30 seconds in grub for the machine to think about it. If keyboard does not work, pnp 0501 is not in the kernel/dmesg. Maybe a timing issue?

Yes, it's something to do with booting into the little guy. The usb is persistent and allows saved changes on the CF-53.
Problem is little paint ball when loads it is different than the CF-53. The changes (additions) are NOT saved. Also, the custom password I chose during the usb set up are not the passwords that work when it asks you for root password to add a program. You have to use demo for user password and root for root password. It's a conundrum. On a good note, the wifi nano came and wifi now works. I'm thinking of just installing MX Linux 16.1 directly from the live usb, and wiping windows. Edit. I just installed Linux on the little guy, completely wiping windows (no dual boot). It's bricked now unless I can get a way to re-install windows...
    Time will tell.

A standard windows bootable usb 8 or 10 will work.
Set the 3E boot order to USB HDD as 1.
    eMMC card0 as 2

That should easily boot to the windows usb stick.

    1. Make sure you have /lib/firmware/brcm/brcmfmac43241b4-sdio.bin
    2. If not already mounted : mount -t efivarfs none /sys/firmware/efi/efivars
    3. cat /sys/firmware/efi/efivars/nvram-74b00bd9-805a-4d61-b51f-43268123d113 > /lib/firmware/brcm/brcmfmac43241b4-sdio.txt
    4. modprobe -r brcmfmac && modprobe brcmfmac
    EDIT REMOVED QUOTES

Cleve, This saves to root terminal. I type su and password (root).

Then use up arrow to find line 2 [Enter]
Up arrow to line 3 [Enter]
    Up arrow line 4 [Enter]

In ceni it is mostly enter for each page.....except for password and the next page "auto". My terminal is saving to LiveUSB.

Using icewm desktop....wireless appears below Conky.

This is all antiX17 stuff relating to brcmfmac (wireless card) No sign of bluetooth yet. Meh!

Now on to SOUND and function keys.

    See ya.

Sent from liveUSB via E3 #31 the one with linux installed using broadcom and S3 as hotspot.

On 3 different live usb's with the 3E all 64 bit:
antiX 16 the live passwords default to the demo & root, not persistent
antiX 17 no keyboard, touch screen works
Mx 16.1 the live passwords default to the demo & root, not persistent
Jeff, are you using 32 bit?
    demo@mx1:~
    $ sudo su
    root@mx1:/home/demo# mount -t efivarfs none /sys/firmware/efi/efivars
mount: mount point /sys/firmware/efi/efivars does not exist

Logically then since it is a computer it does not exist.

    Sorry for your troubles.

Yes sir, 32 bit antiX 17. I just cloned a USB stick using Live-USB Maker GUI. Had to type the 3 Broadcom lines in the first time on Cleve's Clone. Keyboard came up and wireless works.

In terminal ...see above...type su at $. Then password root. (sudo su not necessary on antiX.

Been playing with the tab key...it helps on long winded commands.

BTW sometimes I need to boot three times to get a keyboard... Hold orange button down for 14 seconds to shut down... also I pause at grub for a few seconds.

    Dinner. :)

    No trouble, just reporting.
The little nano WiFi works great, however as you know takes up real estate i.e. 3m0 USB port.
I'm getting comfortable using a new yet similar system.
I believe antiX 17 uses a 4.1 kernal as is quite fast.
Can't wait to try on the 29 and 30 models.
    Videos on forums very helpful.
Also, antiX is not for the beginner.
Suggest MxLunux 16.1 for beginners... currently on my daily driver.

I was concerned about the menu for a bit but after learning a few short-cuts I like it. (like super-key enter launches terminal)

Agreeing it's not for the terminal haters. Dolphin Oracle's videos are a great resource.

I spent last evening learning a little about UEFI shell. Nothing conclusive yet but a third party boot loader may be necessary. EDIT 32-BIT IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH ESP, ELILO OR STUB ARE OPTIONS. (from quick search on antiX forum) The way I understand it.

Downloaded an all in one Windows loader.
    windows 7/8.1/10
    32 and 64 bit.
UEFI and BIOS dual boot. All in one usb stick.
I tried Rufus many different ways and I could not get it to boot on both machines.

I then used Rmprepusb. Fat32 with a WinPE bootloader--BAM, It boots both machines.
Pretty sure Rufus uses a Grub bootloader of some kind.
    It must cause an issue.
The UEFI test machine was the 3E.

    The latest re: 3E.

I did in fact have Linux booting and running the 3E from the hdd.. Then I quit and re-installed 8.1.

Why? (that's hard (long-winded)to explain) I'll put it this way:
Every step ahead just brings you to another step.
    1. Boot from Linux and usually you lose the touchscreen, keyboard and touchpad the second you leave the grub menu. antiX17 was the first distro to yield a working keyboard and pad....then MX16.1 and MX17. But not always.

    2. Say you have a working keyboard. So..where's the wireless? Turns out the soldered on Broadcomm wireless needs special handling. O.K. we fix that for the live session.

    3. So we install to hdd. Oops efi! It turns out we are on a 32/64 bit system. Efi requires bootia32.exe to start a 32 bit efi. The distros I used put something like boot64.exe in the system. Shoehorn (pry your way) past that and it may boot but the touchscreen, keyboard, touchpad and wireless don't work.........o.k. maybe the wireless works the second time. Naaaaaarrrgh!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    4. Now you are up and running but the stylus doesn't work good near the edges. No big deal right? But say the keyboard is dead this time around....how do we shut down? (answer: plug in a USB keyboard is how and hit [Alt]F4.) or hold the orange button down for 14 seconds and start over.)

    5. O.K. say you got all the above working. Where's the cap-lock indicator? How about auto rotate? Ummm Bluetooth is on the wireless card....and probably some other things I didn't think of yet.

    6. What if the reader of this is bull-headed and wants to run Linux from the hdd anyway?....Here's how.

LEARN TO USE VIRTUAL BOX (I USED ORACLE)
GET A CLEAN INSTALL OF 8.1 RUNNING
INSTALL YOUR LINUX DISTRO TO THE VIRTUAL BOX WITH A DESKTOP LINK AND..
    ENJOY YOUR TABLET.

(The desktop will open with the functional 8.1 tool-bar visible. Auto-rotate works, wireless works and I seem to remember the caplock pop-up working) Neat! I turn off Windows auto update "just because".

    7. Should I buy one? YES! Cheapest two piece tablet of this quality on the market. +- $65.00. USB 3.0. Feather-light and extremely tough...they were designed for education (kids).

Field notes: I use classic shell on mine, most of the start-up gui's are disabled. Machine boots to classic shell. [Shift][Super-key] goes to 8.1 menus. [Super-key] returns to classic shell. This has a small ssd hdd so I have a micro-SD (64Gb) in one of mine. (1 of 4)

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/222898199258?ul_noapp=true

price drop to $45 + $14 shipping. The only reason he is at 98% is he took 14 days to ship and never issued a refund he said he would to me. Other then that, I'm on the 3E I bought from him right now.

Hey guys, new here and just wanted to say hi to everybody. I just got mine for 45 bucks with free shipping with the keyboard dock. Mine is the RGS version. Like everyone else, tried to boot a Linux distro on it, no go. So, I popped 8.1 and ran windows updates and got some drivers like video and wifi updates. Still trying to find drivers for the dock so that I can use the keyboard and mouse. I just can't seem to find the drivers for this tablet. I tried the edugear link but I can't download the drivers. Wondering if anyone has the drivers for this device. Thanks!

Thanks safn1949. For some reason I couldn't download the driver from the panasonic website but from the description, It was just something as simple as the Atom Z3700 series SOC driver. They still have it on the Intel site. My keyboard and mouse and touchscreen works now. Thanks again!

Hi again guys. The Bay Trail Z3000 series drivers from the Intel site work except for the audio. The Intel SST does not output sound. I tried to play and it says that it failed to output sound. There are no yellow question marks or exclamation marks and the Realtek I2S drivers were installed along with it. I was wondering if anybody else has had trouble with this. I am running Windows 10 Pro on it right now. Thanks again. I might sell this since it's becoming more of a headache to me. The OSD driver says it's missing a couple of .dlls as well. Seems like nothing is going well for me on this device.
