So im getting ready to order... I was going to buy the alienware 14 but that bulkiness of it.. just messed it up, also the reviews are claiming that the screen sucks, and it gets realllly hot..
So im between the blade and the blade pro... I will take it mostly to school ( the 6lb of the 17 is not a big deal, is less than the alienware anyways) i do alooooooot of coding and typing on my laptop, and i only play Eve and League of Legends...
So why should i pick one over the other one for my needs??? Also money is not a problem..

Seems like you are no longer interested in the m14x like I am. There are other choices you can go for besides the M14x R3, you have the Razer 14", the Clevo 13", the Ideapad Y410 and MSI GE40 Dragon Eyes in the 13-14" category and all have HD+ 900p screen to 1080p.
However if you are set on the Razer 14" then go for it because it seems to be a really premium machine that is so thin and light that can actually game properly, although I'm not sure if it has overheating or throttling problems and we have to wait until it is properly tested. -
Depending on what you mean by "cool". It definitely gets warm/toasty, particularly towards the top edge of the keyboard. Fans stay relatively quiet, and the temperature of the exhaust air is cool, but the components still radiate a ton of heat under gaming conditions.
-
Great info. Thanks. You already have one?
-
There wa a brief comment about the blade staying surprisingly cool in one of the hands on articles. I can't remember if it was Engadget, ign or cnet.
-
I think what we need is a actual review with temperatures of idle and load for both the GPU and CPU. Notebookreview does a decent job, hopefully in the upcomming weeks we'll get actual reviews from people who have it
-
Haha are you kidding. My older mbp 13 gets loud when I stress it and that is just with an iGPU.
The new Razers look interesting I look forward to reading a bunch of reviews to see what the reaction on heat and noise is from many sources. -
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
no Im not kidding at all. -
I've pre-ordered a 512GB Razer Blade (14"). Excited to get this in my hands!
-
anyone no if the blade has 2 msata slots?
-
I would like to know which has better Screen quality clearity etc
Razer or AW m14x new
& from
Razer Pro or AW m17x (R5)
Thanks -
same hope they ship soon!
-
^ I would say system RAM. GFX RAM would have a heatsink - or at least it should.
-
So the AW 14 has an IPS screen which in paper should be the best out of all 4.. But reviews show poor viewing angle and only 160 cd/m^2, also early review mention that the screen is not that good.. So on the 14vs14 comparison i would give it to Razer (even tough it is a lower resolution) on the 17 inch the AW offers a 120Hz screen which would be better than the razer pro
-
Just got back from E3, Saw the 14" Blade and fell in love
These things were running all day there doing their demos and were still cool to the touch. And yes there is 2 M Sata slots so in theory you could put 2 512 Msata SSDs to have a terabyte of SSD
Also on Min's Facebook link: https://www.facebook.com/minliangtan
There is a nice photo of the the thermals of it
-
Nice! So you can confirm that the 14" Blade stays cool during graphical intensive sessions?
-
If there are 2 M-Sata slots, I'll get the 256 one. Will be enough with external hard-drive. And I'll add another internal drive some time after if I need some more space.
Still waiting for the review though... and very excited ! -
It was much cooler than any other gaming laptop I have played with. It looks like they are pushing the heat to the back part of the (Above the keyboard) to keep the base and the keyboard cool to the touch.
-
Any idea if raid is supported?
-
One way or another, No one their wanted to leak any information about it yet. I believe the new chipset will support it. And if it doesn't Windows can kind of sort of do it on its own.
-
More importantly, can you confirm the 14" Blade stays -quiet- during graphical intensive sessions? Interestingly Min chose not to respond to the noise question in the Facebook thread. That's what concerns me...
-
Compared to the older Blade this thing is silent, If you are really listing you can hear the fans.. If you are near LA right now drop into the trade show and get some hands on with it
-
Check out this video - LORDNOD takes a look at Razer Blade - YouTube
It answers quite a bit of questions most of you guys probably have -
Anyone know what brand razer is using for the ssd?
-
Thanks Rabbit. Wish I was there. When you say older Blade do you mean R1 or R2? From what I've read the R1's were like leaf blowers (much like my m11x R3). Wouldn't take much to improve on that
-
Well it isn't a leaf blower, This is the type of thing that is very hard to describe via text. Hands on for this is key. I really didnt even notice that the fans were even on. The R2 would be my comparison the R1 was a jet pack.
-
Awesome. Thanks again for the great info!
-
Wow thanks for all the great info. I will def be ordering this today!! Probably wait till the MSata drives get cheaper and put a larger one in the laptop. As for now i'll have to deal with the 128 storage.
-
So two mSATA ports, voidable warranty only if they determine you opening the computer was the problem and $1800 price point for 128GB? I think that is the way to go, then buy a M500 480GB when it comes out.
side note: anyone curious about the educational discount? use an email address from Full Sail University, Digipen, Art Institute or Republic Polytechnic and you get 10% off, which makes pricing for the Blade $1620 for 128GB, $1800 for 256GB or $2070 for 512GB. Wish I knew someone who went to any of the above haha. -
Guilty
only works on the 17" laptop
-
it looks to me the 14" is more educatable though..... 17" don't fit in some lecture halls as they have tiny desk space
-
will it available in Singapore around August? :v
-
Thank you so much +1
Can you also tell me in for gaming
which will be more powerful or will have less Stuttering
comparing both
I really like the extra display screen on Razer Pro
but still in thinking which to get
Please -
Honestly ibraveheart,
The Razer Pro has the same GPU as the Razer Blade so in terms of GPU performance they are the same. The resolutions are different so in a 1080p your FPS will slightly go down when comparing the 1080p to 900p (1600x900). These Haswell CPUs are beast because I'm using an IVY bridge CPU right now and it run's pretty much every application I throw at it. My only concern and it should be your's to is the heat issue. There really is no actual temps on load or idle on the Razer Blade, which in the early reviews on the m14x R3, there are actual temps but I don't know if they are reliable or not. I would honestly wait on someone who has an actual hands-on review on the Razer Blade and see what the temps are. Razer Blade uses a dual-fan exhaust while the new Alienware m14x r3, uses a single exhaust. Obviously if it's between the Razer Blade vs Razer Blade Pro, I'll probably stick with the 14''. But it's too early to say anything so honestly I'll just wait and see what people are saying on heat and upgrade-ability on the Razer Blade. -
doesn't really matter how many fans you use, all that matters is how much air gets blown out with those fans, imagine this, a single fan blows out 2 cubic units of air in the AW whereas in the Razer each fan only blows out 1 cubic unit of air, I'd say the cooling ability of both machines will be on par, but then it will be heavily on other determining factor, such that if one heat pipe goes from the CPU to the GPU, then to the exhaust, will heat flow get blocked between the CPU and GPU, thus although the combined heat gets dissipated by the exhaust but the GPU's constant heat dissipation blocks the CPU from getting effectively cooled, might need a physicist to look into those areas but ultimately, it is heavily dependent on how the engineers do their math to overcome those problems, and how much tests/ method of tests have been carried out on the prototypes, a single fan setup doesn't mean it can't compete with dual fans, it depends on how the heatpipes get the heat directed to the exhaust, if heat doesn't actually flow towards the exhaust no matter how powerful the fans are it still won't cool the system down
-
I agree with you qweryuiop,
I'm just going to wait until I see more reviews on both units and just make my decision first. They should be shipping out the Blade soon right? -
I just did a quick config on an alienware 14. Which most consider to be a premium laptop. It really puts the Razer blade pricing into perspective.
Alienware M14:
Screen: 1080p IPS (most likely better than blade)
CPU: 4700QM (equivalent of the razer blade pro)
RAM: 16GB (double of both blades)
HDD: 256GB Msata + 750GB platter (equivalent of the $1999 blade + possibility of platter drives)
Graphics: 765GTX (dual monitor support) Blade needs another DP port
Ports+Optical: Obviously blade looses out heavily on this front.
all for a grand total of: $1899
you can say a lot of alienware, but its hard to argue with it's value. Waiting for reviews to size up the two in term of thermals. -
What you are trying to justify is only its price/performance ratio
Have you ever considered its portability I.E. weight and size
Have you ever looked into the ultrabook pricing? do they offer a price/performance ratio anywhere close to a standard notebook?
Now have you realised other than the CPU power consumption the razer blade fits itself into every other catagory to calling themselves an ultrabook?
Have you ever realised that for the price of a samsung series 9 you can get any machine that performs 3-4 times faster in terms of CPU power and unknown times faster in terms of GPU power
Now have you taken the price/portability ratio into account?
Have you realised that if you combine portability and performance, price goes up in exponential scale due to the exponentially increased complexity on the thermal design
Do you think an ultrabook allows a margin of error in manufacturing anywhere close to standard sized laptop, if any thing affects the aero dynamics within an ultrabook I can guarantee you everything gets fried in that thing
If you think I'm talking shxx you can try and remove all the heatsinks and cram up the PCBs in a desktop, it is at the thickness of an ultrabook, will it power on without blowing up? -
Yes, I know it's ".66 inch THIN".
Funny. The guy on the alienware thread is telling me i need to take a science class for wishing something the size of a M14 should have a 780GTX and 4930MX.
Im sure im not the only one who can see a use for both laptops. And how each can be improve with some minor changes.
Chill guys. It's a laptop and neither are perfect. although kudos to Razer for trying to carve out a new category. -

I put the new 14" Alienware out of my buying bracket once I saw it was OVER 6 pounds. Just waiting for the official specs/weight/price on the 13" sager model before I decide. Thats heavier then the new MSI ge-50 that has similar specs and it a 15" laptop. -
So these types of comparisons still don't seem to be fair, For the systems form factor you will not find anything similar. You can always find a huge brick with desktop components that will end up being faster. But what the Blade is in price it makes up being portable and weight. Same reason desktops will always be cheaper. It cost lest to make the parts larger. Also why the hell is there an Optical port on a laptop? Doesn't that kind of defeat the idea of being portable
Sorry for the rant.

When is this machine comeing in the UK or is it already here?
-
blade 14 shipping and tomorrow. No word if blade pros are going out early yet.
-
Thanks guys
I think best is to wait and see a comparison video
& that will help alot
Hope someone will post a video soon
