hi jaybee83 i tried to read most of the 3d, so id like to ask you ow if u or ay1 else here, knows if the overvolt is possible on EM machines as well. I read it was not possible on EM machines, do u know is anything has changed? is it still not possible for us EM users to overvolt this nice card?

    ty in advance.

yes, something has changed indeed :) iirc, the most current version of atiflash is now able to read/write the vbios on the em series. also, a specific version of asus gpu tweak (2.3.7.3 i think it was) is able to tweak the vcore software-wise. theres a thread here by the user VSSS giving more details on that :)

Interestingly, I asked a seller on ebay who is selling a 7970m for only Clevo P150HM series notebooks if it will work in Clevo P170HM.
His reply NO the card will not work with Clevo P170HM only 680m will work with Clevo P170HM.

    Interesting to say the least.

I asked him if he has tested 7970 with p170hm and he said it does not work only p150hm works with 7970m.

Nice guide and thread here. I have a P150HM with a 6990m and am thinking about upgrading it with a 7970. I have a couple of questions:

    1. I understand HDMI will not work anymore? Thats kind of a bummer for me.
    2. Searching for a 7970m to buy I see some sell it with new heatsinks included. I thought you could use the original ones?
    3. I opened it up to clean it properly yesterday (had only blasted the vents from outside before). I wanted to remove the vram heatsink to clean it better but the thermal pads underneath seemed to be more or less glued. Will this be a problem?
    4. I have never updated the systems Bios, I guess this is mandatory or at least highly recomended with or without gpu upgrades?

    2. No, the kits just get shipped with one so they throw it in.
    3. They are just stuck fairly firmly, just gently work them loose.
    4. I would.

Thanks for the answers. I bought it in november -11 and apparently thats when it got discontinued..
    I have 1.01.14 & 1.00.12 and the latest are 1.00.13.

I dont have any real performance issues yet, I might wait and see if any of the upcoming gpus will work in the P150HM. Its not like the 7970m is dirt-cheap, or brand new.

Install over to new 7970m from 560m went great and I'm loving it! Some questions about upping the voltage and overclocking in Afterburner.

Right now, I'm on stock 1.00v at 975mhz/1425. After I flash to 1.075v will it enable the voltage slider in Afterburner? Also, should I check the option "Force constant voltage"? Or would it be variable. I don't understand how the voltages work really. When running tests should I start with 1.00 move up to 1.025v and so on until I get to 1.075? Or do I just go from 1.00 to 1.075?

Great thread. Thanks for all the help!

My card came pre-flashed for HM models and it worked out of the box. I tried flashing to the vbios provided in OP, but it wouldn't allow me to install graphics card drivers. I flashed back to the vbios that the card originally came with and everything worked properly again. My question is that, is there a way to flash to a vbios that allows overvolting? Or a way tounlock it with the vbios I have now? I can send over the file I have if needed.

u could, of course, try the ov vbios versions linked in the op, see if u still have those driver troubles with those. if push comes to shove u can still just flash back to stock :)
in any way, would be nice if u could post a screenshot of gpu-z with ur stock vbios and also provide a download link for it so others with ur troubles can use it.
btw, does hdmi work on ur machine with that stock vbios? would be very interesting to know :)

There is a gpu vbios extract button in gouz next to the bios version number. You can also use nvflash.

hm, what exactly would u be trying to achieve with that on an EM machine? this is just for machines that dont have an igpu and would otherwise be unable to properly use the 7970m.

aaah, ok, gotcha :) the general methodology should be the same for all kinda vbios versions. just make sure to use the most current atiflash version since that would support flashing on an em series machine iirc.

iirc u need the most current version of atiflash in order to be able to read the vbios on EM machines.

provided ure planning to swap ur 570M with a 7970M, of course ;) chances are good that it will work there as well, since other users have already reported this modded vbios as working on their different model machines (other clevos, alienwares, i think msi as well...), but i cannot give u any warranties on that ;)

Maybe someone will be able to help me.

    2 x Radeon 7970m
    MSI GX740
    bto (p170emx)

I tried to do blind flash both of radeons in msi but without success.
Notebook simply does not log in to the Windows, so it is not possible to do blind flash. For Msi gx740 i bought a AC 180w. When i put one of the radeons in gx740 by the first time, the screen was black but i hear that it was going i mean sounds of loggin in to the windows. But that was only one and first time, later i put other radeon card and after that msi start but only with led of power working and nothing alse. For now it doesn't matter which card i put, results are the same.

Both cards tested "atiflash-ai" with the result "Unknown SPI" on P170 em.
    I used atiflash in versions 3.89, 3.95, 3.99, and 4.07 on p170em.
All showed the same "unknown SPI"
It looks like both of cards were blocked for modifications.

It just sucks, my old hd5870m get (at stock P2400) oc ~P2700 in 3dmar 11, and 7970m ~6000 at stock and i just can not stand that i am not able to modify anything in order to improve performance.

hm, where and how did u get those two 7970m gpus? also, why would u want to flash them in order to be used on the p170em? they should work there without flashing involved since it does have switchable graphics.

First of the radeons 7970m i bought by clevo reseller for Poland, and another came with notebook (X.BOOK 17CL47-7970 i7 QUAD) from Netherlands reseller.
I want one of the radeons to work in msi gx740, what is impossible because of vbios enduro on. I am also not able to put vbios with enduro off on p170em( like i write, atiflash shows "unknown SPI"), and msi gx740(even don't start with windows). So as you can see i came to the death point :D
6k in 3dmark11 is ok, but i want to change volt, clock by flashing vbios that will be suitable for my needs.

    1st radeon have 850/1200/1.050V (PL)
    2cd radeon have 850/1200/1.000V (NL)

So it is possible to modify, but i dont know how i can make that by myself

first off, u dont need any vbios mods for the p170em, since its not possible to turn off enduro there :) concerning voltage mods on the EM series, check out this post here by VSSS: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/712264-custom-cooling-p37x.html#post9154878

might be possible to change the voltage on the P170EM by software methods, just be sure to use that exact version of asus gpu tweak!

as for the msi gx740: have u checked both 7970M gpus in ur P170EM for functionality? would be good to know if both are functional and not defunct in any way ;)

secondly, u should use the autoexec.bat method described in the first post of this thread (please read the WHOLE first post, including the updates!!!), since no manual input is required there by the user.

    cheers

No, the software voltage tweaks dont work on enduro setups, it has to be vbios flashed in.

Hi im new here and a newbie on upgrading my gpu :D
uhmm so the bad part my gpu gtx570m just left me all alone :D
and my light and hope is to upgrade to 7970m but im still very very confuse
on what brand will i buy Dell?? or clevo??
and my laptop is MSI gt683dxr so i think it has 16f2 motherboard and many people have tried and had success on upgrade.
but on with the confused part. if i get dell 7970m can i blindflash it with clevo vbios. or if i get clevo 7970m can i blindflash it with a clevo vbios
using the guide.?? correct me if im wrong :)
and i read a problem with dell 7970m he cant get to blindflash because of uefi?? so he desoldered the vbios chip and then flash it to a clevo vbios then it work. and others have dell 7970m and they just blind flash it and then it works.

so what is the best and maybe 80 to 200% success rate

or give me your opinion :D

    and thanks in advance
    please help me :).

    hey buddy,

unfortunately, i cant give u an answer with 100% certainty there, since im not an expert on msi machines :) what i do know is that clevo cards definitely work on ur model and that the vbios would thus also be compatible. concerning a dell card, not sure if u could crossflash that modded clevo vbios onto it and then make it work in ur machine, so that would be a risk i guess.

    cheers

u can always try with one of the clevo resellers. in your case i would send an email to either MySn / Schenker or try with goldenstar computer @ Clevo Germany

pricing should be anywhere around 50 - 80 € i guess.... but no warranties there

Thx jaybee - wrote an email to goldenstar, cause mySN said to me that it is very difficult to get any cooling components for the machines without buying the card which it is made for.

the first one comes preflashed so it should be just plug and play in ur machine.

for the second you would have to use this flash guide and do it urself in order for the gpu to properly display an image on ur screen :)

again, all without warranties, since im a clevo guy :p so better to consult with a 16f2 owner first before u go for a new gpu ;)
