but how about the size ?? is it the same?? because this upgrade kit is for p150hm and p151hm. because i see other clevo cards it can upgrade to p150em ,p170em , p370em. i mean is there any different between the two?? like p150em and p150hm.

You would need the 7970M heatsink from the GX60 and its best to get a dell card if you can.

@F1r3: first and foremost the all copper cpu heatsink from the P170HM/EM/SM series, since my OCed gpu is heavily limited by the generated thermals. and the P150 series laptops only sport aluminum heatsink fins, so im hoping for significantly improved temps there :)

on the other hand, im also considering to upgrade my gpu heatsink to the massive one piece model offered in the SM laptops now. its supposed to improve gpu load temps by up to 8-10°C. not really necessary though, since even at my 25-30% oc my gpu stays cool and shows max temps in the low 80s when stress testing in kombustor. gaming only gets it to the 70s, if at all ;)

@vinmark: u should definitely take meaker´s advice, he´s somewhat of an authority when it comes to MSI machines :)

Hi. But if I get a dell card what would I do?? should I flash it?? If yes
On what vbios?? The 015.017 ?? Or 015.022 .and I didnt found any much thread on dell card. But I usually want a dell card because its much cheaper but
Many people had experienced success on clevo cards upgrading to 7970m.

So I still lack knowledge on dell 7970m cards I mean on how to make it work
On my 16f2 board. Could you help me and send me the steps and procedures
On how to make it work and also the vbios if I need to flash it. Heres my email
    ([email protected]). Tnx

    hi to all,

I just upgraded my hd 6970m to 7970m from "upgradeyourlaptop" on ebay, good feedback!!!
I bought the one says "UPGRADE KIT FOR P150HM/P151HM with enduro-disactivated", I asked them if it will be compatible with my P170HM...

Even if I was sure, they told me it is NOT and asked me If I wanted to purchase the GTX 680 that will be compatible with mine :)
After all this I received my box at home....surprise NO Heatsink, Xcross, ONLY the card with itc DIAMOND thermal Paste, I was so MAD!!!!

But I contacted them and they APOLAGIZE for the mistake and shipped me the rest again to Belgium, I forgave them :)

Now I just want to tell u guys, if you buy this kit or card from them, u will have to REFLASH your card with the one from the first page of this topic if u want image when plugged on HDTV!!!

I also have I question, I used to have sound with my HD 6970m trough dvi-hdmi, now with 7970m only image on tv, could it be the driver? I bought this DVI-HDMI adapter because it's original ATI and can send sound signal too, can be helpfull... :) but now don't work anymore :( WHY????

Hope this was helpfull ans hope u can help me...

Unfortunately, there is no fix for the HDMI audio output on the 7970m and HM series. It's a bug in the vBIOS of the GPU and there was no fix for this from clevo or the modders here on notebookreview.

he was talking about his dvi port, on which he used a dvi to hdmi adapter :)

pricing sounds good mate! but i was actually aiming for the new SM gpu heatsink, not the EM one. so which heatsink did u mean exactly?

I asked them for the Complete p170EM Cooling components for an 7970M (Copper Heatsink for GPU + Copper Heatsink for the VRAM) - so they answered it will be about the 30 Euro for the whole components that i need to cool the card. Cooling pads on the components will be attached by them also.

Hm, is the SM Series Cooling compatible with the HM Model?! :)
So maybe you will ask for the SM components or i will do next week, if it is compatible to our machine

should be compatible since they have the same dimensions. only that the gpu heatsink is not divided up into two parts for gpu core and vRAM but is a big solid block of copper heatsink goodness thats able to disperse heat way more efficiently :)

but i guess the pricing should be in the same range, just a question of scarcity since its still so new ;) as for the cpu heatsink, its all the same for the P170 HM/EM/SM series. only that its all copper as opposed to the ones from the P150 :)

The question is, is the Heatsink of the SM compatible to the 7970m or not.. Height, width, depth of the copper etc. - if it is not, you gonna kill your card maybe cause of to high presure or cause of no contact to the RAM etc. pp.

easy fix: just wait for the 8970M to come out which is gonna be identical in layout to the 7970M but will most likely get the same heatsink design as the 780M ;)

    HI jaybee83,

I thought maybe you already heard about audio support with dvi/hdmi adapter on HM series? Of course with the right adapter with audio connectivity Inside like mine...I"ll try the vbios from PCSPECIALIST 0.975v for HM is it safe?

    thanks mate

some guy on techinferno shared it in a topic, of course the voltage is lower on this one, bad for oc, but lower temps and consumption :)
in fact i'm hoping find a way to get audio through my dvi/hdmi, cause it used to work with my hd 6970m, it must be vbios related don't u think?

Good afternoon and thank you for the guide on this blind flashing a HM with 7970M

I just joined the forum then as I've been following this guide and having some trouble with a P170HM.

The machine keeps BSOD on startup, after a few restarts windows will disable the device from working properly and I can boot into windows using iGPU (i think it uses the iGPU please correct me)

I have about 20 or so 7970M's laying around, some are new some are older and I've tried flashing both however I don't need to blind flash as I have a P370EM and can watch what's happening i'm still using the atiflash.exe and 7970m.rom and autoexc files from this guide, I've gotten pretty quick at flashing these can do it in about 8 seconds :) and that would be good if they actually worked in my P170HM.. I get display but each time I try and boot into windows I get a BSOD, I've done a fresh install of windows and only installed the latest catalyst driver no other drivers, and still bsod's

I was seeing webjeff on pages 20, 24 had the same issue but resolved his after changing his card.. I've tried about 5 different cards, brand new ones and older ones and still just get blue screens on startup

I've got the latest BIOS & EC bios 1.01.10 and 1.00.09 I have also tried to flash new cards that I haven't flashed before this time blind flashing in the P170HM after doing a dry run, I've tried two new cards this way and I don't get a display upon reboot.

It seems no one else is having this issue, and it seems that I may be overlooking something some where, I was wondering if any one has had a similar experience that they could relate

    Thanks

wow, what the heck are u doing with so many 7970m gpus lying around? :D thats insane!

but concerning ur problem: have u tried any other gpu yet in ur p170hm, other than a 7970m? have u gotten ANY gpu to work on that machine as of recently? could be that ur mxm slot is faulty, however unlikely. just think its even more unlikely that every single one of ur gpus is defunct :p also, are u properly applying thermal paste and gpu heatsinks? handling the gpus in such a high throughput manner could very well lead to sloppy installation (just covering all the bases here, no offense ;))

Hi Jaybee thanks for the reply

I've just gone through a whole bunch of these cards.

I have tested all the cards on my P370EM.

I've also tested my P170HM with other GPU's like a 670M and benchmarked it for hours, no issues there

What I have discovered is that of the 7970's I have, there is only one that works in the P370EM and it has not been flashed, vbios revision BR43595.003, obviously this is blind on the 170HM
The cards that blue screen have all been flashed, they are the vbios revision from the atiflash.exe files that you have all used to flash your cards. that being the BR042817.008, can any one please confirm their vbios revision?

even after finding a 7970 that worked in the P370EM and benchmarking that, I still get bsod after flashing that, whether i use in the 170HM and P370EM so :(

all I'm doing when flashing is booting to the USB, running autoexc and it flashes then restarts. I can monitor the whole thing as it's not a blind flash on the P370EM... it restarts, I let it boot to post, remove usb then turn off. am i not doing some thing or doing some thing wrong?

what vbios revisions did you guys have before and after flashing? all of my 7970's have come out of P370EM's that have been configured for crossfire could this have somehting to do with the bsod's?

In addition I've made sure the driver is not the cause of the issue

I've tried this in a P150HM too and I get the same results so I don't think it's the MXM slot itself, and the P370EM works fine with the non flashed cards

Thanks for your free time and efforts guys I will let you know if i get anywhere

hmmm... have u tried reflashing the already flashed cards with the stock vbios from ur P370EM? see if that solves the bsods? cuz that would at least narrow it down a bit and make sure that those 7970M gpus are not faulty.

as for the vbios versions: the one im offering in the OP is 015.019.000.000.042817 BR042817.008, whereas at the moment im running a dell vbios from TechInferno (also provided by svl7, same author from the one in the OP) with the version number 015.017.000.001.042717 C42904A1.117

and just to confirm: yes, the 7970M dell vbios actually works on our clevo cards :) so maybe thats another possibility you could check out. although im NOT vouching for the functionality of actual dell 7970M gpus in clevos!!!!! those have to be found incompatible due to EC sensor issues concerning the GPU temp.

BR042817.008 did not work for me I continued to get blue screens on all the cards I tried, some new, some older ones.

I couldn't get my hands on the standard vbios for my cards they were mostly BR43595.003, but I tried a vbios for the P370EM 7970m, can't remember the revision but i still had bsod's..

I then flashed them with the dell vbios you mentioned you are using Jaybee, and they all work now flawlessly, in the HM models and the EM's..

so to sum up if you are receiving bsod's on your HM or EM 7970m, try the dell vbios mentioned above by Jaybee

Thanks a lot to Jaybee for this post and the help from the community hopefully this post helps some one else out

hm, thats very interesting indeed! could it be that those 7970m cards were actually pulled from dell machines? that could very well explain the bsods uve had before...

in any way, im glad u finally got them working buddy, enjoy ur ton of hardware :D

    Thanks Jaybee,

They were actually bought directly from Clevo, they came in P370EM's in crossfire configuration so I have no clue why the vbios on the first page of the guide did not work for me but we got them going nicely, The dell vbios even works well with crossfire mode on the P370EM.

Unless Dell resells their 7970's to Clevo? haha

    hey buddy,

for the p170hm definitely, just not sure about the p370em. in theory yes, since its also got enduro disabled and the vbios im providing was pulled from a p270wm machine. so ill give u a "yes without warranty" on that ;)

for flashing on the p150em ull need the most current version of atiwinflash i think.

Has anyone noticed a weird scan line that goes up across the main laptop display when you're mirroring via DVI ? (With 7970m) Anyone have a fix?

Ps. Since when does DVI transmit audio as well? :p

I'm not an expert, I don't have a answer for the first part of the question, but for the audio I guarantee it work with a specific dvi/hdmi adapter from ATI or AMD, because they put audio wiring that others don't have,
I wonder why they didn't make them all like this bump, probably marketing for HDMI sales don't know...)

    Hi jaybee83,

    Thanks for your excellent guide.

If I do this, do all of the files (ATI-flash + autoexec.bat) go on to the root of the usb drive after it has been prepared? I am also somewhat confused about perparing the stick using the HP format tool. These steps in particular:

    - download the HP USB Stick Format Tool and use it to prepare a thumb drive of ur choice in windows (choose FAT32 and install DOS files)
    - use a DOS package for the usb stick (in the HP format tool, just point to the directory in which the folder lies)

Any Chance you could explain them in a bit more detail for me?

    Thanks!

Yes, all files should be in the root directory of the stick (system files will be hidden anyway).

The HP tool effectively installs DOS to the stick since it is an OS, you need to provide it a copy of the OS to install which comes with the tool download IIRC.

    Thanks for the reply!

Another quick question. Does the original P150HM heatsink (from a 6990M) fit correctly on the 7970M or is there modification required?

Can I confirm that before I do this, my USB drive should be formatted FAT32 with DOS and contain three files on the root

    1. atiflash.exe
    2. autoexec.bat
    3. 7970M.rom (the altered vbios)

I really don't want to brick the card!

    Thanks

I just bought a Dell AMD HD 7970m card from ebay. This is the one that i got: Alienware AMD HD Dell 7970M 2GB GDDR5 M15X M17x M18x Dell P N 9XVK3 | eBay My laptop is an msi gx640 - it has the HM55 motherboard, so it doesn't have IGP. I was wondering if this card will work for my laptop since the description says that it is compatible with an m15x, and that laptop also does not have IGP. Or will i get a black screen on boot and have to follow this tutorial? I know the temps will be hotter, but i will accommodate for the higher temps. I also have a 180W PSU.

Does anybody know the difference between the part numbers for the Dell HD 7970's? I know that there is the 747M2 version, and then there is the 9XVK3 one which I had purchased. Also does anyone know if I can flash the Dell HD 7970m (9XVK3) with the IGP disabled P1xxHM vbios?

Typically swapping the vbios vendor will cause all sorts of issues and just not help.

Ok. Thanks for the heads up. I thought I remembered reading somewhere that you can cross flash the dell and clevo vbios without bricking the card. After I attempt to upgrade the GPU, I will create a thread about the experience for other people with my notebook model that are looking to upgrade their GPU.

    Just to confirm,

I successfully followed this method to flash the Dell vbios on to my Clevo card in a P150HM. I used the autoexec batch file which worked perfectly.

    Thanks!

I'm sure that it is. It may not work with the UEFI Dell 7970m card, which is the newest Dell 7970m that comes pre-flashed with the UEFI vbios version 022. With the new card, you have the possibility of bricking the device if you try to flash the Clevo HM Enduro Off vbios. I just ordered a Dell 7970m from eBay and it is flashed with the Clevo HM Enduro Off vbios. However, the one that I ordered looks like a Dell engineering sample 7970m because it has a black pcb, and on the GPU die it says 1151 ENG.

Hey, all. What are the best CCC drivers for the 7970m on NP8150? Also, is there any word on the brightness control? So far I'm just using 3rd party software to dim the screen when needed. It also goes dim if the battery is low.

Update: Latest 1.8 b2 drivers are treating me pretty well.
