Tried a few. Right now I'm using this thing called j.s monitor bright. I turn it on when I want it dim, quit it when I want normal. It's lightweight and does the job, but it doesn't dim the taskbar or start menu.
I had another called desktop lighter, but it lagged my comp occasionally and the controls were iffy.

Just letting everyone know that the Dell 7970m ES works great with this vbios. I have it up and running nicely with my MSI GX640 lol.

Yep. It would be even better if I had a better CPU. My 740qm just isn't cutting it because it is bottlenecking my gpu. I only get a little over 18000 gpu score in 3dmark vantage and I know it's because of my cpu. Before overclocking my cpu my vantage score was only 17000. My next upgrade will be an i7 920xm, and then this graphics card will start showing its potential.

Vantage is a very CPU limited benchmark anyway, you could try vantage extreme or the latest 3dmark.

Does anyone know what the best drivers are for the 7970m flashed with this vbios?

    Hello,

first of all, here is my current laptop and BIOS information:
    System Memory: 640KB
    Extended Memory: 8192MB

    MB Series: P150HMx
    BIOS Revision: 1.01.14
    KBC/EC firmenware Revision: 1.00.13

    VGA Card: nVIDIA GTX 560M
    VBIOS Revision: 70.26.29.00.06
    VBIOS Build Date: 04/12/11

I bought an AMD HD 8970M some months ago. It came with MSI-VBIOS. When I install it (I made a CMOS-Reset, of course), my P150HM will not boot. I turn it on, nothing happens for maybe 10 seconds, then the air cooling goes to maximum, it beeps 4 times (long) with the Numlock-LEDs blinking and then, it turns off.

Exactly the same happens, if I try to boot without any graphic card in it.

Then, I sent my 8970m to SVL7, he could flash an Alienware-VBIOS on it and get it work in Alienware M15x. But I got still the same error.

So I decided to switch my 8970M into a 7970M. The one, who sent me the 7970m say, he flashed a Clevo-VBIOS on it and it works in his Clevo P370EM. So I was expecting this older graphic card working in my P150HM, maybe with a black screen. But I am still getting the same error!!

(Then I sent the 8970M to the one, who have given me his 7970M. He have got different laptops, including a P150HM, where he gets this error as well. He says, only his P370EM is working with the 8970M, but only two minutes and then the Screen turns off...)

That's my situation. Does anyone have an idea, what's going wrong with this graphic cards? I don't think, I did any damage to one of it, because I'm writing this with my old NVidia GTX 560M, which I build out and in over 10 times now, without having problems with it.

    Can anyone help me.
I have a P150HM and my 6990m has died. I have reflowed it once sucessfully but upon the second time it has totally gone. My screen will not turn on at all and remains black. Attempting to go into BIOS the screen is still black.
I want to replace it with a 7970m card. How can I do this and make sure it works if I cannot get my screen on to check my bios or flash?

Any help is much appreciated, really need to get my laptop working again.

    Cheers

For anyone interested, I just found a better one called Gamma Panel. Funny enough I came across it while looking for ways to brighten up my monitor when playing CS. It gives you a lot more flexibility and options than the previously mentioned. It has a nice "curves" type control for anyone familiar with photo editing. You can also save hotkeys which is really useful. I set it to ctrl+f7 through f10, for the different levels of brightness; one being default.

    Download Gamma Panel - MajorGeeks

Just got 7970m. Installed it and flashed the vbios. However, the machine would flash caps lock+number lock+scroll lock then beep before shutting down. In the bios, it says Vga empty but detects vbios and build date. I don't think it's overheating because air from the vents are cool. What's going on?

    Hey godly,
Can you explain how you know that you flashed the vbios of the 7970m successfully?
Was this error seen before, during or after the flash process?

There is enough time to finish the flash before it shuts down. I can see the dos prompt say flash complete reboot in 5 sec. Heck, it can even boot into windows before it shuts down. I tried both the bios from this thread and the Dell vbios from svl7. Same results, i get about 20sec before shutdown. Oh, it will start flashing and beeping as soon as post completes, basically having the card in there makes it happen.

The seller said this is Clevo card, not Dell so it should work right?

What does the blinking led mean? Numlock + caps lock + scroll lock all flash at once then one beep, repeats 3 times then machine shuts off.

Edit: it stands for overheating. Both CPU and GPU fan do not engage with the 7970M installed so the machine shuts off.

Edit 2: The card is actually a Dell card, which is why it's shutting down. I looked at the capacitor on the card and it matches the info from http://forum.notebookreview.com/computer-components/716433-sold-clevo-7970m-350-a.html#post9171025 I'm gonna dispute this with eBay

Yup dell cards have incompatible ec controller with clevo motherboard bios causing overheating issues.

OK, I got a Clevo card with dell vbios on it. My machine will not post so I can't flash the vbios. Any thoughts?

Edit: It's the CPU fan that won't engage this time so no post = no flash. This 7970m upgrade makes wanna take a hammer to the notebook. The card is one of the first batch of Clevo cards where the "tall" capacitor got hand soldered on by Clevo.

Not sure what it is, but I just tried connecting my 7970m to an external screen via HDMI and it works flawlessly! Running CCC 13.8.
I haven't actually tried it before now as I heard it didn't work.

Can anyone please answer this. I have the same problem where I don't have a 6990m to update my bios and ec. I want to get a new 7970m but would it work out of the box with the stock bios and ec?

The 7970m won't work out of the box. I believe there IS a way to change the boot order of your laptop without going into the bios, but I'm not sure. I wouldn't want to offer any advice on that without being 100% sure anyway.

EDIT: Can't access bios to change boot order! /TrueCrypt [Solved] - BIOS - Windows 7 It's an F-key, but I don't know which one would work on a Clevo.

Pixels, your best bet if buying the 7970m is get someone to flash the rjtech vbios onto it before buying it.
Then insert it and it should work. This way you don't need to do blind flash etc.

The 6990m based on that post previously is dead if you baked it and inserted in and still black screen. That indicates death so please dispose of it thoughtfully.
The 7970m and you must buy a clevo version, will probably have a bios on it which supports enduro. You need to disable the enduro by flashing it with the vbios posted by jaybee here:

    https://app.box.com/s/e55d985fc4c7e23f403f

Given that link I would advise buying from classifieds here on notebook review and getting the owner to do the flash for you.
Even with a lower version ec and bios for your motherboard you should still be good to go with this card an that vbios on it.

    Good luck.

So I forgot - despite being told - that the original Dell 7970M was replaced with a new one with the dreaded 022 "UEFI" vbios and mistakenly tried to downflash (also with a Dell vbios). Now I have a brick and blind flashing on my Dell M6600 will not work (the notebook does not boot).

I will try later with an older MSI notebook, but assuming this does not work either... Any tricks or chances of success without changing the bios chip? (I do have the original image...)

Thanks. Unfortunately the only person with a dual card machine I know has an M17x R2, and the Alienware simply will not boot with any 022 7970M inside, functional or not.

I might just have to change the bios chip in the end...

Hey, guys. I keep getting constant crashes and BSODs with the 7970m now. I just noticed that Starcraft 2 is notoriously bad for this, other games not as much.

I'm using latest 13.11 CCC beta and MSI afterburner. Any ideas?

Check your temps whilst gaming use temp monitor programs hwinfo64 is my recommendation.
You would probably be best advised to repaste and again I recommend icd7.

Thanks. I always keep an eye on my temps, and they've been fine. CPU sits around 70 when gaming, same with GPU, and around 40-50 when idle. I've had them go up to 90 when the vents were blocked, but that didn't result in a BSOD. I just cleaned out the fans too and I still got a BSOD after that. There's good circulation and I tried running fans at max, so I'm not sure it's related to temps.

    Any other thoughts?

Can anyone tell me what's the difference between Clevo's 7970m v1.1 and v1.2?
A couple of days ago I received 7970m v1.1 2G and it seems like I can't get it working on my P170HM.
I'm experiencing exactly the same issue as webjeff04 did. I've installed the card, put the usb stick with bios but the laptop just lights its power and bluetooth leds.. nothing else happens, black sceen. Since it doesn't reboot even after 10 mins - I think it's safe to assume that flash process doesn't start.
So.. another question is: can anyone confirm they got a working 7970m v1.1 in HM machine? Or other HM owners received v1.2?
I'm also very interested what card revision has webjeff04 received as an exchange?
    Any help/information is greatly appreciated.

    Hello,

I've just followed jaybee83's guide and it seems to have worked. I can load up my laptop (p150hm) and it does display, but I have a number of problems:
    - The card isn't recognised by the bios, but it lists the vBIOS. (says empty)
    - On GPUz and device manager it says it's using the windows driver, I've tried to install AMD's catalyst drivers. It installs (without obvious error), but nothing happens afterwards (no icon or program).

    Can anyone help?

    edit:

Fixed it, downloaded the AMD driver autodetect, gave me the mobility catalyst control (wups :D). Now working like a charm!

I have a v1.1g 7970m clevo card but i run it strictly in alienware m17xr2 with the eurocom vbios. It will not work with rjtech vbios (enduro off) i have also occasional screen white wash as a result. I have yet to try the 7970m in the clevo as i have a 680m in it working beautifully.
I would think the 7970m v1.1g with the rjtech vbios should work in the clevo but have yet to confirm/verify this with testing.
The v1.1g 7970m with eurocom vbios will not work as it had enduro on and this is incompatible with HM series clevo notebooks.
    Hope this helps someone.

    Thanks for the input!
So I guess it's true that v1.1 doesn't act as friendly as v1.2. The problem is I can't seem to even blind-flash it to test and I got no EM machine to preflash it there. Bummer.
In my case it would be great to contact webjeff04 but he hasn't been active since January.. and the warranty time of the card is ticking.
Well, gonna try the whole blind-flashing procedure again and pray for a miracle - that's all I can do for now.

Ultimo87, if you had the same problem as me (you can load your p150hm up, but it uses the windows driver for the GPU, I checked with gpu-z), this may help.
    AMD Driver Autodetect

Not dead, but you may need an SLI system to flash back to a proper vBIOS or solder a chip with the correct one to the mxm board.
