7970m Logging Thread, Games with Utilization Issues (Only post logs, NO questions please)

Just about every "game engine" still outsources their physics engines. Havok, Euphoria, PhysX, etc. Coding their own physics engine would more than likely take longer than creating the entire game itself. It's why these engines are outsourced to begin with.

 

That's not exactly reassuring. One interesting thing I just noticed is that after you hibernate your computer the under-utilisation will be more noticeable and prevalent. Really such a strange bug that this card is being plagued by.

 

that only happens with phisyx med or high in BL2, so its mostly a game related issue.
As for the hibernation its normal, the card is off.... and restarting.

 

Lol. You obviously aren't hearing me. I mean, once the card has turned back on (you know, like in a game and functioning) the under-utilisation is more prevalent. Do you think about what you're saying before you say it? Of course I realise the card isn't going to work while it's asleep... it's once it turns back on though that it should be able to perform at the same level it did before the computer went into hibernation. Which it doesn't.

 

It aint my problem if you cant write and express yourself properly... you also have a horrible reading comprehension..........

and yes its physix that kills it, all pushed through the cpu, I only have the 3610qm run an xm and im sure it will run buttery smooth.. also a large scale firefight is 4 players and a couple dozen bots.. missiles, turrets, explosions, when all is done, there is a sea of rubble on the ground.. for the most part i dont see much less than 40fps. never drops off 60fps with physix on low, and everything else maxed.

 

So you are saying its a CPU bottleneck? i have a 3610 as well, and also get excelent framerates with physix on low, i have played with it on medium or even high and not every firefight pulls my fps low, its really something to figure out for BL2 i guess, for the time being i will keep playing it with low physix, it runs great.

 

Ya gearbox got back to me, and physix is carried by the cpu when nvidia "physix compatible" GPUs are not available. and like i said, It works great most of the time, but get overrun and frames start dropping. BUt quick scoping bandits from across the map while 360'ing after jumping from a ramped buggy is only possible with the physix set to low. I love gaming at school.
I am in class now, but i will refer you to some places where it really hits the fps

PhysX was designed to run on GPUs, so I assume the process is being emulated if ran on the processor, which is really bad in terms of efficiency. Even though the 3610QM is powerful enough for the type of effects PhysX calls for, the process isn't being done in the way it was intended.

Nothing noticeable here. Still get random BSODs on startup just like the beta3. Oh well.

 

I'm going to install it anyway. Beta4 caused my CCC to crash no matter what. Luckily I set everything to work as high performance unless specified, but I can't change the options in individual games, which is killing Alan Wake for me. Apparently I have to enable MSAA through CCC in order for the grass to have alpha channels (?). -_-

 

Is that why the grass looks so janky? lol I could never figure that out!

 

You need to install only the display driver, Your old CCC will do the job just fine.

 

CCC is what's crashing. It crashes on start up and it crashes trying to open it manually. It will not open. It started shortly after I was setting some custom options for a game and hasn't worked since.

 

I was In the same situation as you.

uninstall all traces of the current. there was method a few pages back

then reinstall stock
finally install 12.11 beta 4/6 over stock.

 

I'll just install beta 6 over 4 and see where that gets me tonight. If that fails, then I'll just uninstall and reinstall.

 

That why i want you to keep your CCC from stock driver and only install display driver from 12.11.

 

Well, I used the AMD uninstall tool just to uninstall CCC and installed the stock CCC and it works. I just hate to lose the functionality of being able to set everything to automatically start in high performance instead of being asked every time. :/

 

Hmm, so I just installed the Beta 6 over 12.7, and install went fine. However underutilization and bad FPS is completely identical in DCS World at both highest settings and low settings.
I guess it's a directx 9 app...sigh.

 

Now that I can screw with my options, grass is fixed in AW by forcing adaptive multi-sample AA on through the CCC. No more crappy grass!

 

DCS World is a DX9 game. Wait for 12.11/12/12 WHQL for the DX9 improvement set.

I replied to one of your posts, trying to help you and providing information. If i misunderstood you its not a sin.... i think. I read a reread my post and dont find a single mean, rude or aggressive remark in it. Maybe the .... turned you on? sorry if it did, i was only making a point, when i wake up a game after sleep or leaving it in the background its normal to me the GPU usage drops to 0 and then slowly (thus the ....) wakes up and goes back to normal.
OBVIOUSLY i did not get the complete picture out of your original post (wich was not very long in the first place)

This few words indicate you DID NOT understand what i wrote, i never said anything about the cards state during sleep.

I wonder when will they adress the BSOD issues widely reported, today i had a session of hours trying to go back to 12.8 (just couldnt reinstall them, short of reloading OS wich i am unwilling for now), finally i gave up and left 12.11 beta 6, maybe i give this beta 7 a try, although i doubt it fixes the BSODs.

 

I retested the beta7 while overclocked at 960/1450 and I think I'm getting cpu throttling, because my gpu score was up 200 points while my physics score was down almost 1000 from when I last benchmarked. Here's the new score (slightly less due to wayyy lower physics score) AMD Radeon HD 7970M video card benchmark result - Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3630QM CPU @ 2.40GHz,CLEVO P15xEMx score: P6968 3DMarks and here's the old score for reference

My maximum core temp was 77 C, my maximum gpu temp was only 73 C. How do I prevent throttling? Do I need throttlestop, or are there other options?

12.11p seems to actually improved DX9 performance, preliminary tests with Borderlands2 gave me some serious improvements, even overclocking gave results:

12.11p stock drivers:
2012-11-17 08:12:25 - Borderlands2
Frames: 12442 - Time: 180000ms - Avg: 69.122 - Min: 43 - Max: 87

12.11 950/1450 OC:
2012-11-17 08:20:42 - Borderlands2
Frames: 13612 - Time: 180000ms - Avg: 75.622 - Min: 42 - Max: 98

Benchmark done in Eridium Blight map, right after reentering i went walking to fight some mobs thata live around the fire station

all with physix LOW, and everything else maxed out (even distance). This is a previous benchmark performed with 12.11 beta4:
2012-10-24 20:54:21 - Borderlands2 (physix LOW)
Frames: 8825 - Time: 180000ms - Avg: 49.028 - Min: 26 - Max: 69

sadly not the same map, but still a good point of comparison i guess.

 

Viozer, you problably having BSOD issue beacuse you did not turn on HPET. to Turn HPET follow this:

TWEAK: Enable HPET (in BIOS and OS) for better performance and FPS - Neowin Forums

I turn it on and my BSOD disappeared from beta 4 . So you might wanna try that . Credit go to halawa77 for this discovery

Yeah, go ahead. The Beta 8 is working great on my end as well !

 

I dont have hpet options in my bios, anyway besides ONE BSOD i am not having issues with 12.11p so far, and excelent performance.

 

I'm getting really bad performance with Crysis 2 on DX11, around 25-45fps in MP and SP, constant crashes and around 80% utilization on average. (it jumps around alot) I've tried v.3, 6 and 7 of the 12.11 drivers and I'm currently using the 9.01 enduro performance driver, it's helped a bit but I'm still getting pretty regular crashes, if I switch to DX9 it's slightly better but still crashes sometimes and the utilization is still poor, all my other games DX9, 10 and 11 are pretty much perfect. Anyone else getting any issues with this card in Crysis 2?

 

The strange thing that I noticed, with AMD Catalyst 7970M Enduro Performance driver , for example in BF3 if you want get 99%utilizaton , you NEED set all on Ultra , but HBAO off. If all on ultra but without AA - utilization near 75-80%. Strange

 

what about beta drivers?

Yeah so DCS World is still sucking badly with under utilization which 12.11 beta 8 was supposedly meant to fix (DX9). I see no improvement at all even after uninstalling and doing a clean driver install.

 

12.11 Performance was meant to fix DX9, not 12.11 beta8.

That is the 12.11 Performance driver. Yeah, I didn't see any performance increases with GTA IV, which is a DX9 game.

 

Hitman runs like crap At least in the benchmarks. I can't get the game to go over 40fps even on medium.
