Another update. Ran 10 consecutive heaven benchmarks with all settings maxed at 1080p and never got above 84c.

You've got a 17" or 15", and IC Diamond or no? Also, did yours ship with the first batch of 7970Ms or the second (delayed due to AMD error) batch?

btw you guys should all know that on these systems kombuster maxes out the gpu, but furmark does not, running furmark mine runs much cooler than when I use kombuster, you can see this by running afterburner and seeing the gpu usage...

ok I just contacted my reseller about the temps, and they were pretty adamant that you should NEVER run kombuster or furmark on a laptop gpu, it's not meant to take that kind of load and is not supported.

Guys I benchmarked BF3 on catalyst 12.6 beta 7900 MOD on 900/1400. Got an average of 50-60 but my max temperature was 88C. I was on ultra everything with motion blur turned off.

ok running heaven which was their suggested test tool, the temps max at 94c but fluctuate between 8c9 and 94c over the course of the run...

This is really ticking me off, clevo gets stuck with enduro on with no good drivers yet and now it's having overheating problems. I went with clevo because I THOUGHT it was more reliable than alienunderware...

i believe 28nm process still not yet mature at the time producing our 7970m so the temp of each gpu may vary (and high).
read the latest news that amd is going to release desktop GHz version 7970 which increase clock speed but same power consumption because they manage to improve the 28nm process.

    I just urge everyone to keep it in perspective;

    - We are seeing the temperatures high for the 7970m in the P170EM, ~90 – 95C under max GPU load.
    - The P170EM is a unique system compared to any comparable brand in similar configuration, in respects to the design for heat transfer, etc.
o We are going to have different temps and variables than an Alienware
o It’s been pointed out several times that an Alienware with the 7970m runs cooler
    - There is no documented bad performing machine because of the high temps, that I know of:
o Every P170EM with a 7970m is performing, gaming properly
o If your machine is not performing correctly; contact your reseller or get an RMA
    - Generally I can say there is mantra to keep the temp of video cards to approximately 80C
o If a card runs hotter, it’s still acceptable OK, just keep it under 100C
    - The life of the video card or any electronics will be reduced under high or extreme heat, how much with the temperature being in the high range is negligible. Operating over 100C toward 120C and your cooking your card.
o 90C or 95C under extreme load is not considered abusive or self-destructive heat for a laptop video card but we can say that it is high
o A high-end video card typically gets upgraded every 2 years, somewhere between years 3-4 it becomes obsolescent
    • Will it fail before the 4 year mark? “Highly unlikely.”
    - Next steps?
o Keep the temperature reports coming in for the P170EM configured with the 7970M
o Someone posted a cooling mod and perhaps something along those lines may be our best solution for those of us wanting to reduce the operating temperature of the card a few degrees C.
o Keep up the 200 hour burn-in of different thermal pastes and report results
o Stop the false statements and scaring people saying the laptop is bad, video card is bad; I don’t care if you’re not going to buy one because it runs hot or because it doesn’t run as cool as an alien ware, etc. The efforts being produced and discussed are concerning owners of a P170EM or wannabe owners who want to understand more about a P170Em with a 7970m and get the most life and performance out of it. Most all of us have had a perfectly good working machine. We have been gaming and working with this configuration for several weeks and no issues. Though a small few have had issues, like with any new machine, mostly they have been driver issues or have been resolved under RMA. There are many reasons we have chosen the P170EM over an alien ware – that is not the discussion here. In fact, it is understood that this original thread came about because someone was worried about his temperature being too high – not that it was affecting his performance in any way.
o Enjoy the machine with the 7970m and report any quirks with regards to heat/performance.

Please post your reseller as well when you post results so we can see if it's resellers or the card. Maybe pc builders such as Myth and Malibal will be fine.

I have a P150EM from sager themselves (where most reseller orders gets done) and are getting the same temps at 90-95% GPU usage also. I would overclock 900/1400 on BF3 ultra, get 50-60 average but after ONE whole round I would get a max gpu temp of 95C according to msi afterburner. This problem is for the new clevo's w/ 7970m in general not just the P170EM.

Keep in mind that even the p170/150em with GTX 670/675 are also having high temps at 10% OC on their threads, so it's safe to say the cooling on the new clevos are not quite "stellar" as it is supposed to be.

    I disagree with this:

Actually my 280M did run over 90C during hot summer days and it did so for a full year until I decided to mod the cooling system and drop the temps below 90C. So he is right up to a point, that point being that running a video card above 90C will shorten it's life-span. But by how much no one can tell, some cards (see Fermi) can run at those temps just fine for years.

I suppose it's not worth really arguing about. This is similar to the 'overclocking the LCD' argument. While it is possible, we don't have any hard numbers as to how it actually affects the lifespan of the component.

In my opinion, the HP I have now runs at the temperatures described in this thread, and that is too hot for my liking. I was really hoping a machine with "superior" cooling design (come on, it has twice as many fans, and each one is larger, with significantly better heat pipes etc) would have better heat management.

Maybe it doesn't bother other people? I don't plan to ever game with the laptop actually ON my lap, but I still fear for the other internal components, especially in a 15" case, when they're subjected to such a harsh (in my opinion, feel free to disagree) hot environment.

Whilst it does look like this gpu runs hot in this chassis, to most people it probably wouldn't even get noticed, they'd just use it instead of analysing how it runs... however equally I would be happier if I could get mine to run cooler, as mine seems to hit quite high temps I would be up for testing an aftermarket cooling system if one were to exist

I'm annoyed with the temps as it seems to be negatively affecting performance. My laptop doesn't bench near as well as what is seen on notebook check. I can't think of any reason for it other than thermal throttling.

Is 90c really that bad? I got the p150em yesterday and mine gets around 93c with BF3 ultra and maxed in ccc except for aa set at 4x. But I don't think it's that bad because my m860tu was getting the same temps and it's still not broken. It actually still works really great with no problems. My m860tu is almost 4 years old and I played alot of games with it, I used this laptop everyday! Hopefully this new laptop will be just as great...

The problem I have with 90 degrees isn't the number, but performance and comparison numbers. It looks like AW laptops are running a good bit cooler (I'm going to see if I can gather more info from the AW owners tonight) and there's the performance issues. I'm 10-20% off what notebook check shows I should be getting. The probable cause is thermal throttling. Rather sucks to pay for the highest of the high end in cards only to not get the performance because the thermal solution is inadequate.

It's hard to say if the numbers are ok or not. Different cards perform differently, some run hotter some run cooler even if they have the same core.

Also the P150em is the only 15 inch laptop on the market that can take the 7970M or any 100W card for that matter.

You can't compare the cooling performance of the P150em or even of the P170em with the 17inch Alienware, which as far as I know can also take two cards in SLI and it is also larger and heavier than the P170em.

But... but... from what I've read in this forum, I think you guys have a problem with your cards. Since there are many Clevo users who don't get your temps and are well below 85C under load.

I can make my 7970 dell throttle after 81C in furmark but that was overvolted the max temp i saw stock is 79c on furmark and 76c on games to me sounds like they did a bad paste job on your machine

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m15x/658295-7970m-m15x-why-yes.html

You are correct about the 17x being designed for SLI. I Actually completely forgot that prior to 18x, it WAS their SLI model. My mistake.

ANd I hope your last point is what's actually going on... Otherwise this would be severely unsettling :/

Oh, I thought they were phasing out the m15x. I should stick my head out of the Clevo forum more often.

First of all, yes, my last point was what's going on.

Secondly, why would it be unsettling?

They don't sell the m15x on their website, to my knowledge, but apparently the card worked when a guy bought one and plugged it in.

And it would be not cool if these cards were ALL running so hot when it's clearly evident that they can perform similarly running much cooler in other systems.

Are the memory chips and other parts underneath that other heatsink looking thing? The one with a single heat pipe connecting it.

Unfortunately they seem a bit too thick. I actually would like them to be thin enough to be replaced with thermal paste, and still make perfect contact, as paste's heat transfer is usually much better.

I was thinking that maybe they are not the same cards... in the sense that while the core is the same, they might be from a different batch that runs hotter.

I am using HWMonitor on my 9150. And I ser diablo 3 to high performance.

Now while playing, the HWMonitor doesn't show the 7970, but IntelHD something, but I know it's using the 7970 because I max the settings and it runs smooth as can be. However my temp for where it does say the IntelHD video card, it sits in upper 70s and max at 80 even after an hour of playing.

I have a feeling that people who says that their card runs cool didn't max out their card. If I play bf3 on high my temps hover around 85c if i play ultra 93c max. And I maxed out the settings in ccc too. Because if i didn't the temps would be even lower.

So can those people who thinks their card runs cool test if this is true. So max out all the settings in ccc and play bf3 not diablo 3...

The high temps that I got was while playing BF3 Caspion border 64player

So, are these higher temperatures causing any system failures or real problems or is it just running hotter than expected?

The "real problem" is that the machine should NOT be running >90C out of the box, without any overclocking, and especially with improved thermal paste than stock.

anyways, i agree, these temps should not be reached on any new manufacturer machines, there is something wrong, this is when an RMA is in order.

I tested BF3 on ultra preset on 900/1400 and my max temp was 95C and gpu usage max 98%, never overclocked any higher after that of course. What Fps were you getting on stock clocks with ultra settings???

Tbh the system is working great, no artifacting, no crashing nothing, it is just working which is why we've said before about not being too worried... I think the issue is we'd like it to run cooler, if anything so it doesn't throttle all the time, and perhaps to try some overclocking.

I think the only way to truly 'fix' this is to get a different gpu cooler, I'm not sure how good the cooling is on the rest of the chips on the graphics card.

I think you are correct I have noted in this thread somewhere that furmark isn't even maxing the GPU, also another thread has stated that there is some trouble maxing out the GPU in a lot of games too. The only place I've seen for sure where it's running at between 99 to 100% all the time is in kombuster running the gpu burn in mode in direct3d 11, the card should be able to do 120fps at that, leave that running for up to 10 mins or stop if the card is consistently going over 100c to avoid damage.

notice how only CLEVO owners are complaining about low GPU usage? I think it has something to do with enduro. AMD's offical driver for 7970m better fix this, or Clevo better release a bios that will enable us to run on dedicated GPU only. Alienware owners already confirmed enduro on will drain performance out of the 7970m, so did notebookcheck's review.
