    Hi there,

    Just got my D901C, Has a Q9650 @ 3.00Ghz, and 2 * SLI 9800M GTX.

I've decided to go with 64-Bit Vista on it, now I'm choosing a video driver, any suggestions?

Earlier in the thread someone said 179.28 was the best, is that still valid?
Which drivers are better for synthetic benchmarks and which are better for real performance?

I'm hoping to try my hand at overclocking as well, if that makes a difference. :)

I'll post some 3Dmark scores after Vista finishes installing. :D

welcome to the 9800m gtx club.

we would be more instested in vanta mark scores if you go that. it's less dependant on cpu speed

    hummmm, kisses huh....lol

    was wondering what those we're.

I'm currently shaped to 64kb/s so I can't download anything of great size, but, I'll post vantage scores tomorrow (GMT+8)

I already had an installer for 3DMark06, and 179.28 drivers, so, decided to give them a whirl, came up with 14483, that sound about right?

I get my full net speed back at midnight tonight, so, I'll play around with different drivers (and post some vantage scores) after that.

    64kb huh...your faster than lighting there..lol

sounds like a winner to me.
and 14.4 sounds no where near right...but will work on that.. :)

Just playing around and seeing how it runs in general, hoping to really start testing the system when my net is un-crippled.

Also, I hope this isn't too off topic, but johnksss, I had a few questions for you (Or anyone else who can answer/has an opinion :p )

    1) I remember reading from you that the 'X' in the QX9650 in your sig isn't a typo, and that you actually have an extreme in your system, but it doesn't do much for performance. Does it perform ANY better than a Q9650 when put in a laptop? Or is it pretty much just the same?

    2) If I remember correctly, you were using 32bit Vista for some (All?) of the benchmarks linked in your sig, according to ORB, is there any reason you use 32bit over 64bit?

    3) Can you recommend a good cooling pad? I was looking at the NZXT Cryo LX, does something like that make much of a difference? Also, is apply thermal paste worth it in these systems?

Sorry if I'm bugging you, or getting too far off topic.

they run exactly the same and yes i have an extreme cpu. since it cost me less than getting a q9650 i went with it. i also have a desktop that it can go in, but my q9550 is in there. :)

doesn't really matter to me, they both bench pretty dammn close. people said 64 bit was better and others say 32 is. as far as i can tell..has no super baring on benchmarking.

i got the nzxt. works great. tried that nc2000. i returned it the next day.

    not bugging at all.

Todey i have play gta4 for 3 hours at 600 850 1500 1.05v without the fn+1. i have played with the vents set at normal/aoutomatic speed. not at max vent speed. and at 15C° of external ambient temperature, after 3 hours of play gta4 the max core temperature was 63°!! i think this is great! when i press fn+1 my 9800mgtx go at 54° XD i am very happy ! my old 8800mgtx at this frequencies go at 79° (without fn+1). do you think that here in sicily, when in the summer the external temperature is about 25-35c°, i can leave my card overclocked and play at 600 850 1500 1.05v ?do you leave your 9800mgtx ever overclocked?

After a myriad of compatibility issues today, I didn't get much done, unfortunately, but, I did install vantage, with no OCing, and 179.28 drivers, Vista64, came back with P9595, GPU score of 7865..

A few programs that I use day to day don't support Vista64, so after a day of trying out hacks and inching towards compatibility, I've given up, tomorrow will be trying out x86, and I'll post more scores and stuff then, hopefully

As an aside, what temp should the second GPU be sitting at in relation to the first in an SLI setup? Second GPU seems to sit about 8-11c below the first, is this normal?

I tried the new Nvidia beta driver and it failed to install again. Sad really, I know there is a work around, but some of the posts indicate that it is merely a different bios. Is that all? Could I reflash my card and stop this silliness or is there a hardware concern? My hardware id is below.

The first line is my hardware id from the display adapter properties in the control panel. It was the longest and apparently most detailed string, all other strings dropped off more information, like the next string dropped "&REV_A2". Is there another place I should look?

I did some searching as well in the install files, and I have seen similar things. The things is that this is what I copied out of the display adapter properties box (as in crtl-c then crtl-v). Maybe I need to take the back cover off sometime and give a look.

I appreciate the help. By the way, what is the subsys number for or does it signify?

better way is to remove second card test first and same with second remove first test second

I have already decided I am going to buy a second 9800m GTX card to make it SLI, but even without, I can run SupCom on highest settings @ 1920x1200 without too much slowdown. I mean come on, when you have a 60x60 map with thousands of units on the map at one time, what do you expect? I'm interested to see how much has been accomplished with the overclocking department. I saw a screenshot somewhere, but thought I would ask, What software are you using to accomplish the overclock? thanks for the info in advance.

Noone has managed to overclock anything except the graphics cards in the D901C.

gfx cards can be overclocked by bios flash, or by nvidia system tools with certain drivers

I am replying here to johnkss post on http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=4672309&postcount=367
as this is a discussion about 9800M GTX and not GT.

I did a bit of research today by looking in the nvcv.inf from Clevo's website and from my official CD with Clevo drivers.

Here are the Device IDs and subsystems that I have found out, they are all reported as 9800M GTX:

    174.90 - NB8E-GTX
    NVIDIA_G92.DEV_0608.1 PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0608&SUBSYS_04811558

    Driver 176.02 - 9800mgt
    NVIDIA_G92.DEV_0608.2 PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0608&SUBSYS_04811558

    Driver: 176.25 - 9egt

    NVIDIA_G92.DEV_0617.1 PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0617&SUBSYS_09021558
    NVIDIA_G92.DEV_0617.2 PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0617&SUBSYS_04811558

I wonder who the other manufacturers are.
AR is probably Alienware but the rest... ?

Looks like my 9800M GTX is probably this one: DEV_0608.2 PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0608&SUBSYS_04811558 because I know it's revision 2.

for you to get to dev_0608.2
you would have to chose the second gtx like this
    NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTX
    NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTX

when you do have disk method.

this will choose the correct one.

Ah I see, so it's not 0608.2 then cause I never had to use the have disk method :D.

What I wanted to say is that there are many other devices and subsystems. But I guess they've upgraded all 0608 to 0617 and I will do the same and keep the 0617 BIOS.

    well...in our case, it's really only 2 or 3
    0608
    0617
    SUBSYS_09021558
    SUBSYS_04811558
    SUBSYS_05771558

when trying to make drivers work, you can change that subsys string to the matching one on your unit. this is how you get the driver to install on your system when it wouldn't work before.

this is the bios string for the 9800m gtx produced around October 2009

    Ah, I see.

Right now I am using 0617 BIOS and with my subsystem 04811558 it makes the card supported with the latest drivers. But now I at least know exactly what card I have in my laptop.

I've also figured out who the other manufacturers are from this website:
    http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=918

So other manufactures have been testing the 9800M GTX:
    DM is DELL Mobile
    AM is Asus Mobile
QU is QUANTA (ODM): sold by ACER, BenQ, vprMatrix, SABIO, AHTEC
    AR is Arima (Alienware)
CO is COMPAL (TOSHiBA only) - probably the Qosimo

I got my laptop in October 2008 as well but my original bios string is PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0608&SUBSYS_04811558&REV_A2

I probably got a card from the first batches, which might as well explain why I have issues with the memories.
By the way, my memories work fine at 900 Mhz but only with the official drivers like the 179.48 as soon as I revert to something else, things get nasty.

yes, but mine has sli and yours is a single card...probably why you have the 0608.
    flip side:
someone who got their laptop around then also as a 0617 bios like mine and it's not sli either.

(speculation) i haven't done this because i don't have to.
now. if you change the 0902 to a 0481. you could flash the 0617 bios to your card without all the fancy nvflash string codes:
    example:
    nvflash 9800mgtx.rom
    for sli hit Y twice

if you leave the subsys id as it is, then you have to flash with the nvflash -4 -5 -6 yada yada
