Nope, there's nothing wrong with the 6990m- they're incredibly popular. The only difference is that it's a few percent slower (3-4%) and can't run 3DVision/CUDA![]()

Hi
So I just received my computer. I noticed my idle temps on my 6990m card was way off. Idling at about 54-57 C. The factory applied thermal paste and thermal pads for me.
I popped the back open to see if anything was wrong. I snapped a photo of how it looked.

I have two questions:
1: You can see where i made a red circle, is it supposed to look like that? Looks like a piece of the metal is missing.
2: I am a beginner at this, but to me the pads looks way off, I'm guessing they aren't supposed to stick out like that. Should I apply new pads?
2,5: The pads I had them install was Phobya Thermal Pad XT 0.5mm
Are they too thin or okay? Can I use the pads that are on now or do I have to buy brand new?
I have some pad material left ( I bought it, sent it to the company, they installed it, and sent back what was left over) but that is not enough for all of the vram. Can I just add one extra layer if it is to thin in some places? -

@supermantwo, where did you get your machine? I would check with your dealer or reseller on this. For one yes your idle temps are a little high.
_ -
I got it from a reseller here in Sweden. The thing is I'm going abroad in 2 days for a few months, and was planing to bring this computer.
I contacted my reseller, and since I don't have the time to send my comp back, they said I should fix the pads myself.
Since I will have to remove the heat sink I'm guessing I will have to repaste the gpu aswell. Could anyone please link some guide, or write step by step, how to repaste the gpu?
Questions I have are; What type of cloth should I use to remove the old thermal paste? What type of cleaning compound should I use to remove the old paste? How much of the paste should i put on (I'm going to use mx-4) and what method of applying/ spreading the paste should I use?
I don't have time to order anything online so in terms of cleaning cloth and cleaning compund I would need to buy something available in general stores.
I would greatly appreciate any help you guys can give me. -
-
I just refitted the pads, didn't redo the paste since the factory already should have applied it. But if my temps don't improve now I will redo the paste aswell.
This screen shot is after just turning on the computer and leaving it on for 10 min. Are these temps way off?

My room temp is only 20 C.
Guess I will have to repaste the gpu then. When I refitted the thermal pads I noticed the factory replaced all the pads with 0.5 mm, not just on the vram but those little bits and pieces all around as welll. I'm thinking this might be a part of the issue, that they are to thin in some places.
But you say my cpu temps look fine? So I don't have to worry about that at least? -
-

52C for the GPU at idle is acceptable according to the factory. Of course the lower the better.
If you are not a intense gamer or bencher there is not a pressing need to re-paste.

sorry no time to read more than 100 pages.
do you think this is normal?
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
It happened after playing, on my laps, the game crysis 2 for about 20 minutes.
The cpu is a 2760qm.
the temperature are fine with regular benchmark tools, no more than 85degrees
thanks for your time guys
Oli -
103c on the GPU is not "fine". Playing on your lap could cover the air vents, which would certainly impact temps. I would consider getting a laptop cooler. Many are designed to sit on your lap. Do you use IC7? That could be another help, but hopefully the "playing on lap" aspect could be the main culprit
-
If you're going to play on your lap, put the computer on a hard surface first. Kind of ironic that using something called a laptop on the top of your lap is one of the worst things you can do to it.
-
-
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
Please do not play anything, let alone crysis 2 on your lap.
_ -
Well, I'm not sure how much not playing anything is going to help, that might suck.
When's the last time your laptop was cleaned? Those temps are very high.
-
check if the paste is applied correctly or any of the VRAM thermal pad is defective. Thats not very healthy at all.
-
I do not know if someone already asking same question before. Does someone know or predict if the 6990m can handle skyrim?
-
hotblack_desiato Notebook Consultant
I will bet my laptop that it can. here's an ign interview: "http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.274350-Skyrim-IGN-Interview-DX11-and-more" So basically it will support dx11 but not heavily and I got the impression overall from various things that I've read that they're not going all out on making this the most graphically intensive game in the world. The 6990m can handle crysis 2 dx11 at 30 frames 1080p. It can handle skyrim.
-
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
^^^^Agreed. The 6990M should handle it with no issues.

I haven't had any experience with amd cards before so I have a question. When upgrading my drivers, do I need to uninstall the current ones and do a driver sweep, or will it be fine if I just upgrade with previous drivers already installed?
-
Everyone will tell you to log into windows recovery mode (or safe whatever) and uninstall with drivesweeper to fully, 100% remove it before install new drivers..
-
J.P.@XoticPC Company Representative
Yep, Safe mode (tap F8 during startup), drivesweeper, and then reinstall
I believe the ATI installer also has an option for a clean install if that helps. -
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
Yes it is always good to choose the CLEAN install whether it is the AMD or Nvidia. The choice is there to choose now.
This itself has worked well without using the driversweeper for many
_ -
I downloaded the preview 3 beta driver but there isnt a clean install option???

Hows the malibal in terms of heat issues in the 6990M ?

Can you guys have a look at this
-
That's a no-no. -
There were a few bad apples, cards that were running at 95+, but all of the re-sellers quickly replaced these ones from what I have seen. I think this was certainly the minority. You will tend to hear more ppl ranting about terrible temps then raving about average ones, which blows the problem way out of proportion.
I would feel confident purchasing from any of the Re-sellers you see on these boards regularly. Every time I see someone ranting, the problem seems to be quickly resolved. -

Hi everyone,
I've been testing the capabilities of my 6990M on ATI Tray Tools with Profiles, and I managed to get very stable results while doing OC and Undervolting at the same time (all thanks to the wonderful feedback from some users on the topic 6970m-undervolting):
ATI Drivers: 11.10 preview 3
Stock Paste + Stock Clocks on 3DMarks 11 = 80ºC
OC: 780/1000 with 1.025v
Temp: 81ºC (+1º, compared to Stock)
3DMark 11 AMD Radeon HD 6990M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-2720QM Processor,CLEVO P150HMx score: P3841 3DMarks
Result: Fully Stable, I played Dragon Age 2, Dirt 3, Battlefield 3 and much more for several hours and no problems at all.
OC: 800/1000 with 1.035v
Temp: 82ºC (+2º, compared to Stock)
3DMark 11 AMD Radeon HD 6990M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-2720QM Processor,CLEVO P150HMx score: P3910 3DMarks
3DMark Vantage: http://3dmark.com/3dmv/3592782?show_ads=true&page=%2F3dmv%2F3592782%3Fkey%3Dk3tbAOO7soAENwGWA3BDiw
Result: Stable, already tested on Dirt 3 and Battlefield 3 (a few hours), but I'm gonna test this setting on all the games I mencioned above, but until now no problems.
Note: I advise everyone to make shortcut to the profiles made with ATT, this way I put the OC+Undervolting only when I play and after the game it closes the ATT, reseting the clocks to default (this way the GPU starts again to dinamically change voltage and clocks as usual).

How are you guys getting ATI Tool to work? Every time I try to run it, I get this :
The Kernel Mode Driver does not seem to be running
A device driver is required for communication with your video hardware
If you just upgraded from an older version it may help to
uninstall AtiTool, reboot and then install a the new version. -

I'm using version 1.7.9.1571. Which version do you have? -

Btw just added to my first post, the 3DMark Vantage:
AMD Radeon HD 6990M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-2720QM Processor,CLEVO P150HMx score: P15917 3DMarks
Is it a good score (i don't believe the histogram they have...)?

Hi everyone,
After even more stability tests, I found that the following Clocks/Voltages are fully stable:
OC: 800/1000 + Voltage: 1.035v
OC: 780/1000 + Voltage: 1.025v
Stock Clocks: 715/900 + Voltage: 0.955v (gives -3ºC compared to stock voltage, on my case all stock was 80ºC, with this undervoltage reaches 77ºC)
Best Regards to all and enjoy this great GPU -
hello
MeNtAl_DaRkNeSs this OC give nice fps boost in games ? -

Hey Mental how did you get ATItraytools to work with the 6990M I am having problems! What driver and os are you using?
Same problem as this guy at the ea forums

I'm using ATI 11.10 preview 3, on Windows 7 x64 Pro.
That issue is easily resolved by disabling OSD on ATI tray tools (I also disabled on my profile for battlefield 3), I know this because I had the same issue when I tried to enable it, in order to see my FPS & Temps during game.
