    that is exactly the point

A Launch like this is nothing more then Ati showing that the technology works, hell i can see the space shuttle but i cant own one

Well the way i look at it is if i get £1500 for my machine with a Qx9300 in it then and a new machine costs say £2100 thats about the cost of the cards on thier own.

Ati as far as i know dont use master/master do they?

Anyhow if you have to pay £600 for 2 new cards, for a similar outlay can get a new machine ;)

Well Gee Guys, there seems to be a lot of pessimism here..... could there be a flip-side of the coin here?

I have seen all the material, suggesting why the ATI Mobility HD 5xxx series should not release soon, but isn't it becoming a bit dated..... being overshadowed with newer information, that suggest the contrary?

I think the article babyhemi presents, is significantly more than just 'paper launch' propaganda. I mean, within this article, there are some pretty clear claims...... 3 new DX11 notebooks...... etc. ..... and......

I assume one of these 'three (3) notebooks', will be the Acer Aspire 8942G, as noted in the following articles:

    Acer DX11 laptops exposed

    and

Acer 8942G to be first notebook with DirectX 11

In Europe, pre-sales of the 8942G have already begun, and the German resellers are clearly indicating availability SOON..... by the end of this month. Some of these resellers can be seen in the link below, or simply do a Google search on a specific 8942G variant:

Acer Aspire 8942G update..... pre-orders available

I was prepared to pre-order one of these, but I happened upon another notebook of interest, and have since decided to wait a bit longer. I predict another new arrival, a 17" customizable, Core i7 (optionally Clarksfield or Arrandale), with an ATI 5870 (1GB of GDDR5) card, and it will be one of the three (3) at CES..... and shortly there after (late Jan., early Feb.), sales of this model will begin in the U.S.

    DX11, I am sooooo stoked!

    <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/HNlglowwBXA&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/HNlglowwBXA&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width='425' height="344"></embed></object>

No, I think it's much more than just a 'paper-launch'. Sure, in an imperfect world, there could be delays..... but I do not think nearly so long, as some here are thinking.

And again, I will soon become an 'early adopter'!

All predictions mind you..... I am trying to remain optimistic!

I doubt it. Look at the desktop 5800s. They're sold out everywhere. Until TSMC's 40nm yield gets better, I doubt we'll see any mobile 5000 cards.

If that video was rendered realtime, at decent resolution, on a modern, consumer available GPU setup, then consider me impressed.

That's the main point some people are missing. Are these 5800 mobile cards going to appear out of thin air? The company manufacturing them doesn't have the capacity to even produce enough desktop cards, where are the 40nm mobile cards going to come from? AMD hasn't contracted out a different foundry for their 40nm cards. Like it or not, the 5800 mobility WILL be a paper launch this January and you won't see quantities until months later.

    LOL!

TSMC, TSMC, TSMC....... The sky is falling! The sky is falling! :D

Yeah, I have read about production set-backs due to TSMC..... and it is reported that this is only a 6 week set-back..... not MONTHS! And, in response to this, AMD has promised to amp things up..... and quantities ARE moving to AMD partners, as we speculate this issue.

Here are a couple recent articles, and there are some positive notes therein..... perhaps some of these can be considered. It's not all negative!

AMD speak to Heaven Media about HD5000 shortages

    AMD on HD58xx shortages

    A couple of quotes......

A 'paper launch' is one thing, but I think it is quite another, when Acer (currently the second in worldwide PC market ranking) has it's European resellers already taking pre-orders on an ATI HD 5850 equipped notebook.

No, I do not think we are months away here, but the opposing views are interesting, and we shall see SOON!

    I stand on my predictions!

Yeah, 'partner' distribution is an entirely different animal than 'retail' distribution.

Wait till ya see my new, soon to be announced (probably CES) and predicted 17", Core i7, 5870 notebook.

    [waving hands over crystal ball......]

I predict it will arrive in the U.S., on or about the time of Acer's 8942G..... if of course, the 8942G even makes U.S. landfall. Seems so far, Acer is focusing on a EURO campaign for this model.

GEEZ babyhemi, I just noticed your locale! Are you going to be our 'LIVE, Up to the Minute', CES Reporter? On the night of Jan 6th, I'll PM you with a booth to visit!

    Almost convinced me here :D
As we are speculating, it's confirmed that the shortage of 58X0 cards in Israel is over,- and that country was never among the first to get upgraded.
Even here in Canada (despite the arctic front) we are ok.
I'd call it a good day, good sign.
The last year is unlikely to repeat itself.
End of February - mid March some of us will run Cr@zis on very high + 8AA

    ALMOST! LOL!

Agreed, shortages exist, but I think the partner's will soon be seeing the initial relief.

    Ahhhhhh YES, very high + 8AA !

I think in a way, we will see a repeat of last year..... an exclusive release of AMD's mobile flagship, in the same timeframe. (Hmmmm, let see..... what was that again? Oh yeah, the W90, 19Feb 2009, 4870 card) Just a prediction, mind you! (I was called 'nutz' then too!)

Yeah, I was going to say something similar, even on Newegg you can find at least one 5850 sitting there.

It's not like it was before where you'd see it and 5 min later it'll be "out of stock", I saw the 5850, checked again almost a day later and it was still in stock.

They may be cutting back production on the 57xx cards to get the 58xx out.

As for Acer, remember they sell the Ferrari notebooks which uses AMD processors, who is also the sponsor of Ferrari in racing, Acer is also the largest Taiwanese PC Vendor and second largest in the world, you really think they have no clout?

I'd say it's bout time Acer stopped eating the vanilla, ASUS must be kicking some butt. Let's hope for a functional BIOS as well... competition is good

    Dear Sir,

May I please kindly ask how is the W90 doing ?

Are you still having freezing problems with it ?

Or is everything all fixed up ?

I would like nothing more than to be wrong. That way I could ditch this 260M and grab a 5800 series.

hmm i think you are right we will see paper launches for a 17" i7 with a 5870, but i dont think we will see a Xfire model yet.

Still thinking few months away from even a paper launch for that atm

Unfortunately, the W90 was plagued with issues for some time, and I abandoned it months ago. Occassionally I follow the W90 thread, and as of late, significant break-thru's and headway has been made.

I wish all the W90 owner's continued luck and advanced success!

For me now, the W90 is a 'bye-gone' idea..... my eyes are on something much better.

I hope you are wrong too! (fingers crossed!)

[Huh, DOC? Is that 'Department of Corrections'?]

You may have a problem simply grabbing a 5800 series..... retail availability, MXM form-factor, or heat sink constraints. You may have to opt for the model I am predicting, unless you plan to wait a while for a refreshed Dell/AW.

    LOL!

    :D

Regarding XFire, agreed..... see my prediction here. But as far as a 'paper launch', I think it will be more. Mark my words (and I will eat them if wrong)..... it will be at CES, and I predict sales, or at least pre-orders, late January - early February.

    [so says my crystal ball.....]

    :)

Remember the ones listed are NOT high-end systems. High-end Clevo's, Alienware, etc will have the HD5870's that can have GDDR5.

Hmmmm...... Over 800 Thousand of DirectX 11 Graphics Chips Shipped! That's 'shipped', as in past tense. I'd say those numbers are significant, and things are moving along..... and AMD is promising continued improvement, right?

It's getting exciting! Stay tuned for CES!

Not to be a pessimist, but doesn't clevo/sager only use nvidia gpu's? Didn't the resellers say this back when clevo/sager pulled the 3870 from the gpu lineup?

I thought I saw Eurocom selling the W870CU with an option for a 4870.

Of course that's Eurocom, so who knows what they were thinking. It's not offered any more (they just have the 260 and the 280), maybe they listed it and waited for lots of people to order them before telling them they couldn't get it. Or maybe they were manually swapping the GPUs before shipping them out (is that possible?).

LOL! That correction would certainly be nice, but the new model I am referring to, will be a single ATI HD 5870 solution. Undoubtedly, Dell/AW will take the lead with ATI X-Fire, later on (Q2 - Q3 2010).

Rorschach is correct here. Perhaps the original poster of this thread did not consider this..... I overlooked this myself, however, I think most here were speaking to the availability of ATI DX11 cards in general..... and not necessarily specific to Clevo/Sager. As I pointed out in my original prediction here, the first notebook to be equipped with the ATI HD 5870 card, will not be Clevo/Sager..... or even Dell/AW.

Meh, I just want these cards to arrive, arrive reasonably soon, and for Clevo to use them, with all we know about Fermi and Nvidia's troubles with shrinking the GT200 core, there's not much on the horizon from them without something amazing happening if they stick exclusively with Nvidia; quite frankly another G92 refresh would be insulting, unless they've doubled the clock speeds and added a lot more of...well everything, oh and DX11 support, somehow. [Which is very unlikely to say the least]

in May? Boy, there is a Clevo barebone available with ATI HD5650 dx11 right now. Some specs: Mobility Radeon HD5650 1 GByte GDDR3 VRAM, Intel Core i7 720QM. Laptop: DevilTech Fire GX, Price 968 Euro (Germany)

The reviewers did some extensive gaming benmarks, STALKER DX11, CMR: DIRT 2 and stuff. Its german, you might use a translating tool - but the benchmark charts are fine to read.

I'd hoped the 5650 would eclipse the 4670 in performance but that isn't the case here. It barely outperforms it which is a major disappointment. I hope the 5870 isn't an incremental speed boost over the 4870 or else there's going to be a lot of disappointed people.

It will be a decent boost ... They don't focus on mainstream improvements as much as high end

Hate to disappoint John, but it turns out to be just a CG production called; 'Stormbirds'.

It is pretty awesome though, isn't it?

    :)
