    Hi!
I'm definitely liking this notebook from what I read so far, but I'm still a bit concerned about the 2 hour battery life people are suggesting. With desktop CPUs, can I expect it to be any better with the lower power and lower clocked models? Any other options for improving battery life besides undervolting/underclocking?

It isn't designed to be a laptop, it's designed as a DTR. Hence why the battery life is not a priority when designing this laptop.

Aside from underclocking/volting, there's not much you can do.

What "proof" are you talking about? The 5820K's base turbo isn't all that great, 3.6GHz single core won't get you very far at this rate, certainly not 8-10 years if you don't overclock the 5820K.

Sprung for the OC warranty the day I got the chip. However as you said it's a lottery, and besides I wanted to see how much degradation I can expect from running my chip like this, so I kept it in the end. If by the time I'm ready to upgrade and this chip is still kicking, well let's just say I'll find a way to make Intel hand me a new chip. ;)

Yeah since IMC doesn't want to run fast ram only thing to do is tweak timings. One good thing about these 2400 sticks is that they'll do 1866 with fairly tight timings. Heard the thing about X chips being close to the center of the wafer, however just from the results I've seen it seems like the X is just as much of a gamble as the K. Plus for Ivy at least there's no real difference between the K and X, but for Haswell I could certainly make a case for getting 5960X over the K parts.

If Clevo implemented a MUX this time then you could potentially run the graphics off the iGPU while on battery to squeeze out just a bit more runtime. But apparently this isn't the case (see post below).

hm, id rather prefer an integrated subwoofer tbh... the sound itself should suffice my needs via the X-Fi software :)

it does supports up to two 9.5 mm drives. depending on where the connector is placed on the 15mm drive it could actually work, but then ud have to waive on a second drive option.

@ppil: the 2 hour battery life is based on the lack of switchable graphics, hence the dGPU is never deactivated and is consuming lots of power. however, by forcing idle clocks on both the gpu/cpu, maybe even downclocking below idle clocks and downvolting both i bet one can eke out a total of 3 hours :)

I would highly recommend the ASUS Xonar U3 for a small, inexpensive USB DAC.

It puts out superb quality audio for the price and supports Dolby Headphone (far superior to Creative CMSS-3D HRTF) and Dolby Digital Live encoding (extremely handy if you're hooking up to an A/V amp).

I've been using one with my P150EM as a replacement for the truly awful audio output on that model.

Do we know the idle power usage of an MXM 980M?

I don't get people complaining for low battery life. Heck, if you buy a Lambo, you expect it to deliver the same km/l(*) of a Smart? I don't think so.

(*) km/l = mpg, for people who still live in Middle Ages and understands only the Imperial system.

With a 85W i7 + a 122W 980m, all in a pretty compact and light package (3,5 kg!), and no Optimus, 2-2,5 hours are even more than I would expect from Batman.

Its not much for battery life and more of size factor. This is a good DTR, but for a tech like me that constantly moves about the factory floor, it may become an issue of carrying it around. 12 hour shifts lugging batman would be quite tiring.

The ZM is good to replace my aging P150EM, but for a more permanent replacement, an SLI one needs to come out and hope it sports only a single PSU.

There is one thing, clevo could introduce a much larger battery but the chances are slim since there not known for having much battery options. Another thing is were still waiting to see if this zm will support future broadwell chips if so then there will be another chance for some savings.
Well its not designed to be a laptop but it still looks like one lol if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck people are going to expect a duck and we all want a laptop that can perform unplugged for a while. Clevo has a bad track record when it comes to battery life and their machines and is one of my only real gripes I have because everything else works for me. If the machine is compatible for the next gen of broadwell chips and has a larger battery option I can see a 3hr battery life possibility. I agree though its not looking like anything over 2 hrs will be possible for now. Every clevo ive seen seem to have a 2hr battery life no matter if its a dtr or notebook slim lol.

The 5820k's are not all that great ? well excuse me your highness but last I checked that thing was wolfing servers and video editing at above 4k without breaking a sweat. Core speeds are not all there is and overclocking is not a priority unless your trying to set a record or just trying to keep up with the times if you have aging hardware but for the 5820k chips those would not need any type of OC since it has 6 cores and 12 threads of grinding power at 3ghz and above is more than enough for a long time. Again the point is more cores are always better. Even at 3ghz and above, overclocking wont be needed for the next couple of years and with proper care and cooling you can have a 8-10 year pc easy. I have a notebook with stock internals a acer with amd x64 and nvidea graphics and thats about 10 years old and it still runs its a webrowser and bathroom tv lol. I dont overclock notebook cpu's much no need to especially since these chips are swappable. If this zm series allows more cpu compatibility for lets say a broadwell then there is no question the multi gen cpu laptop will last 8 plus years.

Actually the McLaren P1 does more than 25+ mpg.

And the Lamborgini Asterion is claimed to do 50+mpg.

the bugatti veyron with its 1001 hp and 400+ kph only does 3.6 mpg though :p

i can only make an educated guess based on the following reviews by NBC:

    4702MQ on 4600 HD graphics 15.6" display = 12W - 19W at idle
    4710HQ with 980M 17.3" display (without Optimus) = 24W - 34W at idle
    4710HQ with 980M 15.6" display (with Optimus) = 16W - 26W at idle

if you consider that the CPU, GPU and the display would be the main components drawing power at idle, you can draw the conclusion that the idle power consumption of the 980M would be anywhere between 12 to 22W :)

    thats quite an odd comment...

    see for yourself:
    3-4 hours on the P177SM-A
    2+ hours on the P377SM-A

and those are the big clevos, mind you!

now lets take a look at an actually THIN clevo laptop model:

6 friggin hours! on the W230SS

naturally, if we talk about highend gaming of any kind of cpu data crunching, u cannot expect ANY high performing notebook to last you more than 1-2 hours ;) but who does that? aside from people who are out to kill their battery...

Is there a slim(er) PSU with a higher power output than the Dell 240W that could work with this model?

I don't think I could carry that Clevo 330W beast around.

Also is there an adapter to go from the Dell 240W to the connection Clevo uses on this model (I realise there is an adapter for the Clevos with the smaller connection).

Then I must decline my invitation to you for our > 2lb club kind sir!

Noone knows what the battery life will be like yet but people can sure get hyped up on what they think it is which brings out the other idiots making them get angry for reasons unknowing to them.

As for 4k, with 5k already being on the market and 8k debuting late next year/beginning of 2016 its only a matter of time before the markets jump on that bandwagon starting 2017 with 15" laptops sporting 8k panels. You guys can argue all you want but the future will change regardless and tech will get obsolete, that will never stop happenning.

Yay case closed you CAN deal w/ something that's more than 5 years obsolete! <3 Welcome to NBR FRIEND! THIS is the spirit we yearn for!

By Default I think it comes w/ the 230W unless you opt for the 330, though the 330w looks much thinner than the original 250W bricks the d900's sported back in the day and those weren't even heavy.... maybe I just need to get my estrogen levels checked or something but I'm still unable to make the connection between 3lbs and arthritis/osteoporosis >:

Nerds and Geeks can't be this weak!!! Don't feed the stereotype!!! *retapes glasses*

At least st University you arent being told to troubleshoot, monitor production data, and manage emails and people at same time. In your scenario, lugging the ZM wouldnt be so bad at all. I dont carry a backpack when I walk about.

Well it's true I wouldn't take it to a job depending on what was done there... but in that case it'd more be a case of "I wouldn't take any laptop to said job" rather than a ZM or my P370SM3 specifically.

Big one for me is monitoring as much data as I can for three production lines while being able to look at specs for parts in CAD. So no laptop=I'll be slow to react. I have about 40+ alarms that tick off for machines as well so I know what goes on at all times :D

I guess it makes sense why people used to look at my oddly when I had my old 15lb D900 beast and would lug it around 24/7 along with a work laptop in my backpack too.. even now I have my work laptop, and my cintiq in my bag and my cintiq I know def will weight more than this, after a day or 2 you don't notice it, as your body does get buillt/adapt to it lol, given the work we do , we need all the exercise we can get !

If you're working in a room and the cabinet opens and you lack the strength to hold it back!!! You'll blame Clevo!!!
If you're able to hold it back and save the data!! You'll thank Clevo!!!

Seriously do you just selectively read people's posts or something? I mentioned in a previous post there are still tons of apps out there that simply don't scale beyond 2 cores or hell even a single core, so even throwing in a 14 core Xeon E5-2697 v3 is not going to speed those things up one bit. Yes I agreed that for stuff like video editing where you can leverage 6 cores the 5820K is great, but until 90% of the apps and games can scale beyond 4 cores, clockspeed will always be king. More cores are only better if they don't come at the sacrifice of clockspeed. 3GHz is starting to become a bottleneck in games even right now, so no way it'll last 10 years (for gaming anyway).

Also not sure what you're trying to prove with the 10 year old Acer lol. If it can't do much beyond web browsing and bathroom TV that's not exactly what I call useful. If you're trying to say with a 5820K in 10 years you'll still be able to web browse, then yeah ok fine. But it's not like web browsing needs much CPU power anyway, so even a "lowly" quad core i5 would be able to accomplish the same.

For the most part when I was looking at the machines that interested me from clevo the battery life usually averages around 2hrs or so.

I really am not sure what to do exactly as there are many choices available.
Is it worth waiting getting the P1 models which dont have desktop CPUs or waiting for the upcoming P7 models which have desktop cpus?
Also seems the P1 models dont have an IPS screens, is there any indication that the P7 models will?

The capacity is 78Wh which is not much larger than other models if at all, it's split over many cells and physically larger to facilitate rapid discharge.

Um, we reached 3GHz with the Prescott, but now a simple 1,6 Atom is much much faster. The point is not the clock, is the increase in IPC...

Do I selectively read posts? no brother I dont do any of that all I do is chime in based on what I know and try to keep a good convo going so the answer is no.

    * you dont need to overclock everything especially on a laptop dtr or smaller form factor pc's if your running more than 3ghz with fast bus and high smart caches and have a cpu that can be upgraded past its initial generation since you can sell your cpu and get a faster newer gen. Overclocking is going to kill the cpu and there is no need to overclock for most games and apps despite how many cores your running. Core speeds are not the end all be all. With games gpu performance is the bottleneck most times out so oc cpu speeds may not be as helpful as having extra cores and a gpu that can handle demanding games and apps.

    * more cores are always helpful, even if some apps dont use them all in the general broad sense the machine with more cores are capable of doing more things thanks to the extra cores. Not every app needs extra cores but I rather have extra cores that I dont need than to be in a situation to where I wish I had more cores. An example of this is how I cant play some games with a dual core and how editing takes a much longer time for my hp 2core. I could have the fastest 5ghz dual core there is but if a quad core is the "new" requirement then the dual core speed demon is of no use because the quad core is whats needed to run it despite how fast I OC the 2core. Clock speed is important but its not king there are other factors such as bus speed, memory transfer rates, # of cores and core requirements.

And I brought up my 10year old acer as an example of how if you take care of a machine and dont go nuts OC'ng it it will stand the test of time. Since that old school acer had integrated chips I dont have the option to easily upgrade, replace or repair it, but these new laptops with swappable mobile parts and upgradable chips have the potential to last 8-10 years and still give great performance and run editing and gaming apps. Thats the only point im trying to make pal. Not looking to upset you or anyone here I dont get a kick out of that stuff I got bigger fish to fry.

Yep, an external sound card is one of my definite aftermarket upgrades. I was looking at the Creative Omni (they have a black friday deal going on). So far I've seen Fii0 E10/17 come highly recommended, although they are a more pricey ($140) compared to $50 for the OMNI. The Xonar looks comparable to the Xfi-Pro at $25

The U3 has Dolby Headphone, Dolby Pro-Logic IIx, Dolby Digital Live, GX2.5 EAX, 7.1 virtual speaker shifter, no Creative bloatware and is IMO much richer sounding than the X-Fi.

At $35 you just can't go wrong.

Go w/ the Fio if only you're going to use high end headphones vs the crap gamer ones ( ALL of them ) and only if you plan on getting 300 ohms or higher, if not then you'll be fine w/ the U3, you're fine either way, hoewver the Fii0's are a great entry lvl

Be careful though when treading down the path of an audiophile. I'm sporting T90 beyer's now and never stepping down, debating on senn's or the t1 atm SHOULD I upgrade again.

If the 3GHz of 2014 is already showing signs of being insufficient for the games today, what makes you think it'll hold up in 2019? The 3GHz of 2014 is going to pale in comparison to the 3GHz of 2019. That's all I was trying to say.

I get what you're saying, but considering that quad cores have been around for 6.5 years starting from the days of C2Q, but hex cores have still yet to advance to mainstream status, I think your concern about quad cores becoming obsolete anytime soon is unwarranted. Again as I've said before you buy however much power you need to. If you actually have a need for hex core because you're video editing then just go ahead and buy it.

I think the other thing you have to keep in mind is you're entirely limited by the PCH as well as the socket. You can certainly keep upgrading the CPU in a laptop but you're limited to chips within the same generation, and on the same old platform no less. There's no guarantee future technology will be backwards compatible or even on the same interface. The same goes for all other components (GPU, ram, storage) I have a Compaq Presario from 2005 that still runs and boots to this day, but it's beyond useless since booting takes 10 minutes and launching Firefox takes 3. The single core AMD CPU bottlenecks Youtube streams even at 360p just to give you an idea, so it is all but obsolete at this point. The laptop does come with a socketed CPU, but I could drop an ML-44 (fastest CPU within its generation) in there and it wouldn't make a difference. My point is, if technology advances to the point that in 8-10 years a quad core won't be enough, you'll likely have to upgrade to an entirely different platform anyway since your entire platform will be bottlenecking your performance, with the CPU being just one part. I hope you see what I'm getting at.

tl;dr n=1 does not believe in futureproofing technology

You guys remind me of the arguments I have with my dad (an audiophile) about how much of the difference is real and how much of it is just placebo effect lol.

Yeah definitely low profile/quality headphones so no worries you'll be fine w/ the U3
