OK philosophical question - why have desktop CPUs so far only been in monster-size machines? Is Clevo planning some water works surprise for us with P7x0ZM photoshopped out of the above pic? I suppose if Putin turns the gas off this winter, a desktop Haswell could be a lifesaver in keeping hypothermia at bay. Probably keep it in the bedroom where it could otherwise get cold at night.
Also ... dang that Intel 730 ssd is almost as good a deal as the one at overclockers on black friday (that I missed by about 3 minutes). Sure it runs hot and power hungry but at that price : performance, you just gotta grab em.

Looks like a new beast. I actually love the new look. And the cooling looks impressive, 7 heatpipes
(even if the one which isn't linked to any heatsink looks strange, I guess it's a "thermal bridge" to balance the heat between cpu and gpu)

@Luna: One of the major selling points of the SanDisk Extreme Pro for me was its absolutely amazing consistency. ( LegitReview, TweakTown -- note the lower access time as well)
My main concern was whether SanDisk was trading snappiness for consistency again, as the previous offering (Extreme II) did just that. But I'm extremely pleased to say that no, thanks to upgraded firmware and a faster controller, the Extreme Pro is every bit as snappy (if not slightly more so) as the 840 Evo 1TB, which was the king of snappiness.
And keep in mind the Extreme Pro 960GB could be had for $474.99 on Amazon, an incredible value and unbeatable price for its performance. The 850 Pro even during the Black Friday sale was still going for $549.99.bigspin likes this. -
Not knowing makes you come up w/ all sorts of crazy ideas huh? So much that you thought you were in the Alienware thread LOL *shot*, welcome to the Clevo section my friend
I'm sure it'll all be ok.
tl;dr
Clevo != Alienware
And SCIENCE! (technology) -
I think laptop cooling has finally gotten to the point where this can be done without insane case sizes, and partially because CPUs (even desktop ones) down clock to save energy. Also, in my opinion water cooling in a laptop is a recipe for disaster. Pumps and radiators don't like being knocked around, make lots of noise, and you risk all sorts of issues when deploying in a mobile device.
FWIW, most laptops employ another type of water cooling already...heat pipes are typically filled with a liquid inside which turns into a vapor when hot, moves down the heat-pipe to the air-to-air radiator at the end, and turns into liquid again. They're pretty incredible.

Although, I did get AC: Unity with it. -
Up until Haswell, the part about GPU being more power hungry was true. However Haswell CPUs are unbelievable power hogs when overclocked. I've seen my 4900MQ pull over 120W @ 4.2GHz when benching XTU. No that's not a typo. ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY freaking watts, on a mobile quad core CPU. (go ahead, ask me what my thermals were like, I DARE you
)
For comparison my hex core 4930K @ 4.5GHz has a peak power draw of 145W when benching XTU.
And if you want an even more extreme example, well just look up AnandTech's review on 5960X.
-
Talk about inefficiency when overclocking, sheesh..
I suspect headroom on a 4790k will be pretty limited, since it is already power hungry compared to the 4770k, and it was just a small bump in speed. -
Haha you know the sad thing is, Intel's claim of Haswell being more efficient is exactly as you described, "at stock". When overclocked these things approach 290(X) levels of power hungriness lol. Another reason why I stuck with IB-E and X79.

Fry's cyber monday in store sales. That + Idk if everyone is aware but NewEgg DOES give a 10% additional discount off purchases when using their mobile app, not sure if its for the first time or what not but thats how I knocked 76$ off my Desktop RAM before.flamy likes this. -
I am writing this on post on P170HM, while still owning an W870CU, and before that a D900F (sold) and before than an M570TU and before that an M570RU. I'm the biggest Clevo fanboy there is. I have never owned an alienware. Why do you make things up? -
Haswell still ecological when you compare with AMD FXs, especially the FX9590
-
@varadero: she just playin brah
on another note, 120-400W+ for an oced cpu eh? *checks up on LN2 storage* yep, good to go! -
nuts! I ended up with 2x Intel 730 series 480GB drives and 2x Sandisk Ex Pro 480GB.
Decide to keep Sandisk drives and sell Intel 730's.
BTW what's the difference between Gelid extreme & supreme? -

HIGH 5 for the IVY-E Lovers <3!
Still best generation IMO!
you'll probably need to own at least 10 more models to compete w/ #10
[ANOTHER TEASE]
Anywhoo you came in w/ the furnace jokes I thought it'd be fun to tack on, I'm a previous D900T Owner 9860 and 9750(still own), m980U, W110, P150EM, W230SS, and soon to be P751ZM, so that puts me 2 ahead o:
Why so tense big guy? relax a bit its a tech forum/the internetz we're not all trolls out to kill youmight need to re read my comments lol anywhoo as Jay below says~
Was figuring you'd play along and be like "OH phew! guess there's good news to look forward too then"
Unless you're defending alienware o;? [<--- THIS IS ANOTHER JOKE]
Also they have the 730's 480gb for 199$ on Newegg atm, tempted to get one for my netbook or is there cheaper/better? since the HDD on it died for the 2nd time ( it has a big issue killing platters within 1 year lol )

a bit OT here but you seem to be the people with the most up to date knowledge...
is there any working Display Port to HDMI 2.0 adapter available which supports 4k@60Hz?
i've seen a few on amazon but when you read the reviews they either don't work at all or are not 60Hz capable... (my PC graphics card just has HDMI 1.4 and i wouldn't wonder if the P751ZM would also "only" have HDMI 1.4(My 4K TV just has HDMI 2.0 but no Display Port...))
just thinking of buying a Geforce 980 for my PC but i'd prefer to have a Displayport Adapter so i can hook up my PC and my new Laptop to the TV...Killerinstinct likes this. -
I wonder if a (mini)DP to HDMI 2.0 cable wouldn't be a better idea. Certainly much cheaper at least.

I'd wait a little bit for the adapters to mature. Until then you should at least be able to get 1080p out of it which should look decent.
-
also some OT from my side: keeping busy with my gf's new tegra note 7 (her xmas present shhhhh!), oced the cpu to 2.1 ghz, flashed newest rom version and tuned the touchscreen responsiveness, now this puppy is running soooo smoooooooth, shell love it
and i at least can waste some time waiting for batman...win-win!
also managed to sell off almost all the parts of my old machine, only the defective gpu and one of my psus left, both being auctioned off on ebay atm. so far very happy with the outcome, didnt expect to still get so much money for those parts! ill put it to good use for batman, that way my trusty ol' p150hm will not have died in vainflamy likes this. -
The fact that they also made the Heatpipe warning stickers black too! This must be great! xD

My guess is... uhmm, 24 december !!!

lol, your guess is as good as mine at the moment
unfortunately no update on that yet... although i would be surprised if preorders didnt go up before the 15th, cuz that was the initial ETA...

Nuts, spent almost $1500 on my custom loop already, and I haven't even bought the GPU blocks. Damn those Bitspower fittings, they really creep up on you. No ZM until much later it seems, might even have to put GM200/390X on hold until this hemorrhage stops, or I decide to spend my bonus+tax refund prematurely...
-
I still can't understand why people want to spend such absurd amounts of money on cooling.. $1500 on liquid cooling really?
-
in seriousness, components have a longer life when they are operating at a lower temperature -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
On desktops loops can last several generations of hardware with only minor changes.
-
who cares about the lifespan of components?
every enthusiast and most people buy new pc/laptop at least after 3or4 years.
the cooling is completly irrelevant for the lifespan as it counts mybe after 10years, nobody knows.
the temperature is good to overclock or to have a silcince machine thats it
so many pc components guys have fear of having 95°C at their gpu (R9 290(x)) or 95°C on cpu.... in a laptop its a completly normal temperature and nobody cares.
but its the same silicium so no worrys guys, pc components last much longer than we need them -
Also I wanted to do this "just because" and because I like tinkering with stuff. No e-peen involved, if anything I'd get laughed at because for what I paid you could build a really high end loop, not so much with what I have. -
Sorry this might be a newbie question, Just wondering, what's the most powerful cpu currently available that can be installed in this laptop? Without minding cooling for the moment. Just wanted to find out the upgrade ceiling of this machine. Could it be possible that it's compatibility with broadwell and skylake will be limited, and the current haswell lineup could have bigger performance potential? Basically just asking how future proof would the p750 be, since broadwell is coming up soon anyway?
Would it be wiser to wait for the next chipset/socket release since the p750 chassis might accommodate that later on also? -
As long as there is a BIOS update for the laptop, likely yes.
