maybe this idea is not so popular.. but:
Clevo itself never had advertised their MXM notebooks to be upgradable!
more so, if you are a re-seller, then you know perfectly that they have always advised against of any kind of GPU upgrades or mods.
there is nothing to blame Clevo in this sense. some re-sellers though do advertise their Clevo branded notebooks as "upgradable" , but they never mention that Clevo does not officially support these upgrades and actually always advise against them.
another thing to look into is that Clevo themselves do not sell GPU separately to any of the "re-sellers", their word is: "our policy is that we do no sell VGA separately".
so all the upgrade kits we are getting are either from China "black market", RMA service stock or from tearing down Clevo barebones for parts, which Clevo is not responsible for at all.

As far as advertising goes I'm told Clevo leaves this up to the Outfits that brand them (which some do advertise as upgradable as you've mentioned).
Clevo know damn well after this long in the game people don't buy their modular machines for their looks. It's not as cut and dry as MSI but doesn't do them any favors playing the ignorance card.
Regarding aftermarket GPU's I really don't know much about how they are truly made available to sell. They aren't all shady operations though.Chronokiller, TomJGX, Ashtrix and 4 others like this. -
Well atleast 870dm owners have something

Im really interested in seeing the power cable that they supply with the card for the P870DM.
I have a feeling they are just selling the MSI cards, and cannot put up the correct image for obvious reasons.
Specially the Clevo 1070 wont even fit using normal installation since its the same size as the 1080. -
It's probably Eurocom. The listing is in CAD and the prices seem to match, like $625 USD for the AUO 4K in another of their listings.

Not that I know of...
This is the 1070 and the 1080 sli, respectively
Sent from my SM-G900P using TapatalkTBoneSan and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -
The problem is the separating wall between cpu and gpu area, the wall of plastic near the m.2 above the fan, and needing a custom heatsink. These do not have the power connector. To use them, you need heavy mods. The 1060, which you are interested in, uses the standard 3.0b form, which is easy plug and play and just under 980 Ti performance, which is a nice boost.
Edit: 1060 is at 980 performance. Thanks for the correction!

The 1060 is supposedly 10-20% better than the 980M so hardly near 980 performance.. Probably 970 performance...

eGPU Preliminary tests.

TLDR' : Get a 1070 if you really want to go the eGPU way. Will be way cheaper than investing in an MXM 1070/1080.
1080 is maxing out the interface. At least i think so, after the first few tests.Chronokiller, Papusan and ajc9988 like this. -
My 1st post people. Like many I was looking at getting a gaming laptop I can fix and replace/upgrade parts myself,
I have always had a desktop PCs that I have built myself, but this year I needed a laptop for mobility, but one thing that kept bugging me was, not being able to swap fix upgrade things, so I looked at mini itx with a 15in portable USB monitor something that I could put in a back pack... But everything was a bit to big and to much hassle..
So it looked like I was going get generic laptop but today I stumbled accros this and I am sure it will make a lot of people here very happy like it did me when saw this......
We need to support these guysLast edited: Oct 3, 2016 -
It's sad that you guys can't upgrade, I feel your pain BUT everyone knows that the key in our hobby is the waiting game. Everyone knew the pascal was coming... MSI is being fishy about their "upgrades" too

So sad, I used to like his videos but not now when he is thrilled about yesterware hardware specs calling it the next best thing, 6700HQ/128GB SSD/16 GB RAM/1060 GTX *face palm* -
His opening statement, which includes a positive reference to the P870DM3, says more than the rest of the video does. Professional reviewers get paid to say nice things about the stuff they review. If they were brutally honest about everything they would end up out of work. Nobody would ask them to review anything for fear of their flaws being exposed and magnified in a very damning way. That's why I take almost everything most of them say with a grain of salt. A turdbook will always be a turdbook, and the MSI is no exception. They're all garbage that can be dismissed out of hand... no review required. BGA is an automatic disqualifier.
-
In fact, beyond his note of the "super cars (aka Phoenix laptops), he was critical of many aspects of the laptop. With that noted, he seems to prefer a beefy desktop with a slim and light laptop, which, to a degree, can be understood. We, on the other hand, prefer desktop performance on the go, hence our desire (and willingness to pay for the opportunity) for the beasts we purchase. In fact, he is doing what many of us would likely do if the industry forced us into bga ******** (although we may not get the thinnest and lightest, we would reconsider the highest end and instead build beastly desktops). With that said, I take all reviews with a grain of salt and always look for bias in testing to attempt to get to the truth...

My problem here is not BGA. The issue is even for a BGA taptop this is a very low specs laptop for 2016 soon to be 2017. 6700HQ and 16GB RAM and holy cow, a whooping 128GB SSD! LOL
Its fine for the average user but he is making it sound like the best next thingajc9988 likes this. -
That I agree with. I can't really go with less than a 500GB class.
Also, all other specs are weak, but I haven't examined other laptops in that category (thin and light) to know what is good in that class (except that the cpu is weak and 32GB for DDR4 should be the minimum).
On another note (OT), which sounds best, (1) 2TB 2.5" sata mx300 ssd or 850 evo ssd, (2) 1TB x400 2.5" sata ssd and 512GB 960 evo m.2, (3) 1TB 960 evo m.2, or (4) 1TB x400 2.5" ssd and wait for Intel optane. Also, is a drop in ssd price expected after 960 Samsung releases?

No drops in prices, all the good ones would drain a whole in our pockets right now like the 960 Pro, 4TB EVO, and 1TB x400ajc9988 likes this. -
The 1TB x400 is around $240. The 960 evo 1TB is released around $480 ($250 for the 500GB), and the 4TB is out of my price range. All options above come in around the $500-650 range.

For a single 1070 it would make more sense to buy the Eurocom Tornado F5 (a really decent and affordable little 15 inch mini-beast) with 6700K at $1666 USD. I really like how it is made. It puts the MSI equivalent to shame in so many ways. And, it's slated for 7700K and 1080 upgrades in the not-too-distant future.
Want to ask about Eurocom Tornado F5

If the M.2 960 NVMe is going to throttle (heat) like it's predecessors, I'll stick to 2.5" SATA for the OS drive.
Heavy usage/performance; SanDisk Extreme Pro 960GB. Older gen but still mops the floor against all comers. $300-350.
Light usage - price / 850 EVO.
No choice but M.2 - 850 EVO
MX300 or X400 - planar TLC - storage only.Ashtrix likes this. -
Do they have a 17" version of this? I either want this or I'll get a P870DM, no GPU, for $1400 (has 6700k, 16gb ram, 250gb ssd, 1tb hdd)

No 17 inch model exists for that chassis.

Reports are the 960 Pro handles the heat better than the 950 Pro.ajc9988 likes this.

I just feel somewhat underwhelmed by this year's models; I was hoping for desktop Pascal (which was somewhat fulfilled) and a change in chassis instead of just mobo change.
Now I wonder what my next move should be...Spartan@HIDevolution and TomJGX like this. -
In Laptops? I hope it is better.
It seems Samsung has taken some steps. A copper layer in the sticker to spread heat. This seems to extend the time until throttling. "DTG (Dynamic Thermal Guard) monitors and adjusts th e temperature of the SSD." Sounds like, possible, built in throttling.
So, if the 960s only delay throttling, I'm still with the 2.5" SATA in a laptop, for now. -
Thermalpad connect to keyboard bottom (p870dm only)
-
So yes they've taken steps to try to reduce the issue. In regards to use in a laptop, it will depend on your model. Some of the Clevo designs will draw air over the m.2 sockets.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Even with throttle it is faster than a 2.5 inch sata drive and normal users will never see it. Even a lot of power users wont.
-
As Meaker said, it only matters on long, consistent transfers. If you don't do a lot of that, the small transfers won't kick it in...
