Thanks a lot for your reply.

I have one final question - the laptops come with driver discs for all essential things (internet connection, etc), correct?

if it has OS pre loaded it is ready to go out the box. you just have to link it to your internet hub/modem.

if you decide not to have OS installed you will get the drivers disc and you manually load one by one once youve loaded your own copy of your OS.

lappys that dont have a OS installed still go through the full checks/ burn in. your supplier will load a OS to do all the tests and then remove the OS before dispatch.

Yes, whether you purchase the OS or not, there is a Clevo drivers disc.

Forgive me if this is not the correct place for this.

So I'm looking to buy a new gaming laptop, and have pretty much narrowed it down to the Clevo P170SM/P177SM.

Baseline spec will be something along the lines of:

    i7-4800MQ 2.7Ghz
8Gb RAM (preferably 1x8Gb at this stage)
    Nvidia GTX 780m 4GB
    240GB SSD

I have a few questions, however.

    1. Why do some resellers offer the P177SM with the Nvidia 780m OR AMD 8970, and other resellers’ only offer the P177SM with the AMD? I think I prefer the case from the P177SM.

    2. Is the track pad multi-touch? This is something I make great use of on my current laptop, not a big deal.

    3. The whole Gloss/Matte screen option I can't decide on. Current laptop has a glossy touch screen, but I so rarely use the touch aspect I don't need it. Are Matte screens duller in reality? Probably more of a personal opinion, but feedback would be welcomed.

    4. I have a 750GB WDBlack disk already that I would transplant to the new device. The option of mSATA raised a query in my thinking. I don't know a lot about mSATA, but would it be worth using an mSATA as the OS disk, leaving both HDD slots available for my 750GB disk just now, and possibly at some point in future another SSD in the second slot for more read-demanding games?

    5. Which reseller would be best? Based in the UK, I presume importing from elsewhere will have issues with import duty and the likes, negating any savings to be had. Prices seem to vary somewhat, even though the specs are almost (but not quite) identical. It seems that you can't make a line-matched spec on multiple resellers for an identical comparison - perhaps that is deliberate. Why should I chose one reseller over another for essentially the same piece of kit? What should sway me?

My current laptop is a Workstation (precision m4600), but has done remarkably well gaming over the past few years. I'll be making the step up from an Nvidia 1000M to the 780m though, so I'm hoping it'll be a nice difference. It also have a touchscreen 1366x768, so I'm also looking forward to 1080p.

Any advice on the queries above would be most appreciated, especially any pointers as to which reseller would offer me the best deal on the whole package/best customer experience/future support.

    Thanks!

    Hi and welcome to NBR

    1. Forgive me if this is not the correct place for this.
So I'm looking to buy a new gaming laptop, and have pretty much narrowed it down to the Clevo P170SM/P177SM.
Baseline spec will be something along the lines of:

    I have no idea
    2. Is the track pad multi-touch? This is something I make great use of on my current laptop, not a big deal.
If it’s the same as last years model then yes it is
    3. The whole Gloss/Matte screen option I can't decide on. Current laptop has a glossy touch screen, but I so rarely use the touch aspect I don't need it. Are Matte screens duller in reality? Probably more of a personal opinion, but feedback would be welcomed.
Ive always had gloss until I bought my P150EM last year from mysn and honestly even though I have the standard matte screen it blew me away with its bright vibrant colours. I cannot see how the 72% or 95% gamut screens can be much better but I guess they are.
I don’t know much about them either as when I ordered they were only sattaII so pointless getting one but now they are sattaIII I guess they are as fast as a normal ssd.

Im biased and will always say mysn as I could not fault them one bit. They didn’t try to sell me something I didn’t need. Like I said earlier I was going to get a msata drive as well and they advised against it as at the time it was only sattaII.
They are going from strength to strength. They started of in germany and then opened in the uk 2 years ago. They then opened an eu branch and now a switzerland branch. World domination next.
Pcsspecialist warranty is very misleading and I will never recommend them as two members in the last 18 months or so have been caught out with repairs. They had the standard warranty that looks like 3 years until you read into it. 1 month courier and 1 year parts and 3 years warranty.

Yes buying the laptop in america would be cheaper but as you mentioned import duty and our lovely 20% vat will certainly bump up the final price and then if it ever had to go back for repair you would have to pay the courier and insurance

    Thanks!
Good luck with whoever you decide to go with. There is a great clevo community on here and always someone is online to give advice.

Thanks for the reply. After much comparisons I have just now placed an order for a P703 (P177SM) on mysn.co.uk. They were really helpful both in Live Chat and via email. Can't wait to get my hands on it :-D

    Thanks again MrDJ!

So i've been talking to my clevo reseller (Logical blue one) and they said the clips on the key are broken so i can't put it back....they tried to get a replacement key for me but found that they needed some special tool (which they dont have) to remove the keys safely because the pins on the keys would always break if they removed it and they wouldnt be able to put it back, and apparently all clevo laptop keyboards cant have their keys removed.safely without this special tool....

Have any retailers here heard anything like this before?

Also this is a rather longshot but does anyone have a spare left alt key for the clevo p151sm1b that i would be able to purchase?

This is what I've always been told by our service team, production team, and what I've advised customers on in the past. Haven't had anybody particularly refute it so always believe to be true. Requires a new keyboard entirely.

Hmm thats odd i wonder how prema removed his keys safely then...have you guys tried getting the special tool (whatever it is) from clevo themselves? Its kind of a problem not being able to remove keys to clean the contact area...which does get dirty over time.

That may be a question best for him if he has a special trick. Service on our machines is ultimately done by Sager and when inquiring with them specifically they also repeat that an individual key is not replaceable and requires replacing the keyboard. I haven't looked at the mechanism myself before.

I've only heard of one guy being able to put his key back on. I'd assume his clip didnt break when it came off. For everyone that has had a broken clip, they have had to get a whole new one.

A can of compressed air and some patience is typically all that is needed. If you spill liquids onto the keyboard you're kind of SOL if it stops working or keys start to stick.

Gentlemen! (and ladies). I'm on the hunt for a new custom gaming laptop and I've got around $1500 to spend on it. I could use some pro help planning it out to optimum specs for the price. Any takers? Thanks! :)

Most important thing is to get the best video card in your budget then a SSD for overall speed and HDD for storage.
    In 15.6" consider the Sager NP8268 with GTX 870M, 17.3" the NP8278.
While the resellers are not allowed to post in the "what notebooks should I buy" forum its also a good place to ask this question. What Notebook Should I Buy? - A Laptop Buyers Guide

I have a quick question for the guys at Xotic:

Is there any way you can disclose what model hard drive this is? Specifically to the W230SS

    "TB 7200RPM [SATA II - 3GB/s] (SKU - HDD097)"

    Thanks!!

Your best bet would be through your original reseller, they can usually order parts for you. If you got it from one of the reps that frequent NBR send them an PM and they can get you pricing and availability.

Each reseller has their own policy on this sort of thing. Some will sell to end users who are not their customers, and some resellers will not out of liability. Get in touch with some of the reps here on NBR via PM, or ask around in the NBR Marketplace, especially the Want to Buy section. :)

I have a question re the P375SM-A, which I purchased in the past three weeks.
    1. Should this machine have P370SMA heat sinks, and should they be all copper?
    2. I get the following warning in event manager - The times in seconds change on each reboot or cold boot. Sometimes the machine just black screens and does not actually boot to the desktop. When it does boot its fast 13 seconds.
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It's pretty unlikely. It requires a specific display connection type that the system wouldn't support since it's designed for the use of TN panels.

-was trying to make an order on xoticpc for the 7358 just now, got to the final step of payment and says that paypal/credit card not available for international shipment (in mexico fyi). whats the exact reason for that? is it a fraud concern? im an american living in mexico, have u.s passport scan and utility bill at my address in mexico matching my credit card/paypal details, does that help or its pointless?

-do you have the 7358 in stock and ready for customization or does it need to be built by sager and shipped to you adding to wait time?

-any clue on the big difference in shipping price im seeing using ups saver from you guys vs other retailers on ebay (different laptops then what you carry but same weight/size) i was seeing $240 from you guys but $80 from some sellers on ebay to my zipcode. its actually a big factor since the government charges 17% customs fees on the value of item+shipping cost

It is and it isn't. For our own protection we have to have the PayPal have seller protection which international PayPal accounts are not. There isn't a problem with sending us a PayPal on an order when the account is international, but you'll see it refunded back afterwards due to us not being able to take it as a company policy. No quantity of documentation will change this unfortunately. If possible and if you have the option available, you can send the funds to somebody here stateside and have them submit an order on your behalf and then have them forward it along for you.

They 7358 is currently available and shipping from Sager. All Sager machines will be built at their facility to order based on what is submitted. No need for it to come to us first unless you're including any XPC services in the build.

Depends on the shipping method used. We insure fully all packages and request tracking information which does bump the price up more than what you may be seeing from eBay sellers. There is also more than one option within each carrier as to the method of shipment. The ones we use are for a reason as we see them as being reliable and least hassle in shipping which is important when crossing borders.

This is probably a really dumb question, but is everyone really completely out of any previous models? I've been looking for clevo barebones that are compatible with parts I have on hand (in particular a 2nd gen intel) but I can't seem to find any at all.

Once a new model or generation comes out, the previous model/generation liquidates quickly, except for used ones you find on eBay or elsewhere. To find any new barebones, that are now into 4th Gen, that are compatible with 2nd Gen parts is going to be difficult indeed. Older hard drives will work, but why use a SATA I or II drive in a SATA III machine? Memory moves from DDR2 to DDR3. CPU and GPU sockets change.

There is still a market for older parts on eBay and elsewhere. You would probably be better off selling the parts you have and put the money towards a new laptop.

As paladin said, when a new generation is introduced, the previous one is sold down/liquidated. Inventory is completely refreshed. You may have some luck in finding individual sellers parting with a barebones unit, but you're extremely unlikely to find a reseller parting with any.

Are they Sager specific parts like GPU/Motherboard or universal like CPU/RAM/HDD etc. Since finding a Clevo may be pretty tough you can always look into other brand barebones.

As far as I know nobody is offering the 3D screen upgrade these days. On our end, there wasn't enough of a demand for it, so we struck it from inventory and no longer stock the 3D panels.

    Hey!

Does anybody know where i can get the keyboard for a clevo p170sm-a wich isn't just a pain in the like the german one? I would prefer the UK version but i cant find a picture of it. I would looooove a perfect normal UK layout but mine came with a german one.

    Thanks...

Best bet would be talking with builders in that region directly. If they build their machines with them they should be able to sell you the keyboard itself as well. Sager themselves no longer offer alternate language keyboards as an option.

My reseller has given me a fan cleaning guide that specifically says to remove the fan to clean it : Horize P Series Fan Cleaning Guide - Notebooks

The 2 times i have done this though, the fan started making a very annoying buzzing noise when i replaced it.

Can a reseller here please confirm whether the fans are meant to be removable? If no, why not?

It looks like those directions were posted by LogicalBlueOne which is a very reputable reseller. I would be comfortable following their instructions. If you feel like your fan issues are because of their instructions I would get a hold of them and ask for some help with it.

Yea im following up with them at the moment, but the number of posters who are saying the fan is a sealed unit and removing it has uncalibrated it is causing me concern.

So i was hoping i could get confirmation from some of the other resellers here who may have run into a similar issue and found out that the fans are not supposed to be removed. It will probably take LBO some time at least to contact Clevo and get a confirmation.

Sure, removing the shield gets you easier access to the blades. Does the shield/plate need to be removed? No. If you can find a small cloth or brush to fit between the blades, you definitely do not need to take apart the fan assembly just to clean the blades. In most cases, as long as nothing is caked on or has stained blades, you can give it a good blow with compressed air and it's fine. It's best if you keep the blades stationary when using compressed air (pushing the fan too fast may cause damage to the bearing(s)).

You wont believe how hard it is to find compressed air in Australia...

Im guessing nobody knows for sure whether the fan is supposed to be removable? Still trying to convince my reseller to ask clevo for confirmation...
