I would not want to waste the microwave on them. My last place of work I purged all HDDs from the building. Working on the new one.

It's the dreaded and now we need to reboot after this change. Let's all go make a cup of tea and wait.

I was going to do some maintenance on my on bugbook, change the paste mainly. Until I realized just how much work that it'll be taking that thing apart. No wonder these machines end up burning up in the end.

I see a specification page, not sure how that confirms it or not?

Kidding aside after clicking around a bit it looks as if the design doesn't seem to have changed much so I do not see where they would fit MXM graphics.
So this remains the only (outdated) MSI laptop with socketed CPU and GPU:

I thought about this some more and I think there should be a mandatory label for each laptop that shows its degree of turdbookness with the highest turd-o-meter rating being reserved to macbooks and imitators and the lowest one to laptops that can be opened and serviced easily both due to good accessibility and non-soldered parts.
I think that an Alienware laptop with everything soldered but the m.2 drives and the battery deserves a very high turd-o-meter rating and maybe that would deter some customers from buying something like that. At least they will know what they are getting into.
I would like to see this information included in the fine print:
in this laptop you cannot change or upgrade parts that are upgradable in similar devices
CPU
GPU
RAM
wireless card
parts that can be exchanged and in parentheses the availability at reasonable prices:
battery (yes)
2 x m.2 drives (yes)
accessibility to these changeable parts takes more than 10 minutes:
this could be parts that are on the other side of the mainboard that can only be accessed by taking out the mainboard or by dismantling the whole top of the laptop
these parts can easily break because of improper design like holding noses:
for example bottom covers
Oh well, would be nice if we could get something like this but I doubt that manufacturers will be interestedFalkentyne, raz8020, jc_denton and 1 other person like this. -

Soldered wifi is gross.
Pin rips off the connector on the card, RMA the entire motherboard instead of just buying a $20 card and replacing it yourself.
I mean even the antenna can be replaced with a freshly crimped wire from a new antenna if you know how to splice wires (isn't hard with wire trimmers)....electrosoft, Ashtrix, raz8020 and 1 other person like this. -
Yep. And what's next? Proprietary screws on everything with an EULA that makes you legally liable for to repairing your own stuff?

A XY gantry and a screwdriver with automatic feeder can handle any m.2 slot screw or any other screw in fact..
My company made a whole assembly line that screws the interior pcb's of a car antenna that has 18 screws and 12 different versions/models.
On a bare motherboard, and working with a conveyor style system you can install and screw the WiFi card easily.
But thats an extra step, not an extra machine, because older/other motherboards still use either m.2 SSD drives or m.2 WiFi cards, so the machine is already there, what this gains them is that its all put in place and soldered down at the same time as other components, and its one less connector and a couple passives due to not having to now pass all the signals over a connector, so a couple less caps and resistors, all that adds to both the cost of the components but also the cost of the pick and place time and reels on the pick and place rack.
So, yeah, expect 3-4$ less PER motherboard, multiply by 1 million now.. -

A proprietary screw doesn't buy you anything besides more expensive screws because you can't leverage the whole world using those screws to drive price down.
Because a driver will be in market as soon as the device is, or most of the times, the driver already exists because the proprietary screw is just an obscure screw head..
Like torx was more or less unknown to the masses 10 years ago it was widely used in the auto industry for much longer than that and was invented in 1967, security by obscurity is always a dumb move.. -

I approve of the use of them in things that could kill you like power supplies so people don't just open them without some effort.
