Well when you get it working guys here is the score to go up against:
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M video card benchmark result - Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3940XM CPU @ 3.00GHz,Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. MS-16F3 score: P8937 3DMarks

Ha true I do need to sort out my power supply again and figure out a fan profile that does not shut down my machine so I can contemplate a 1.1v bios
-
silly meaker, wish i had ur "problems"
about to order my new psu tho!

Hah, well its tricky to push a 15.6 inch machine as hard as a 18 inch designed for two cards
-
stop making up excuses and PUSH
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Not just now, my power draw is at 220-230w and the cable is getting hot on the extreme settings which can only get exponentially worse as I push more. I'm going to try getting some thicker ones and tweak some other stuff and then yes push forward.
-
is that with ur modded franken-psu? just ordered mine (compaq 120W and dell 240W), total of 60 bucks. hope i can open up the dell PSU and exchange the cable from the compaq PSU without damaging anything beyond repair
here i thought that the cable didnt matter? so it seems like it could very well "not stand the heat", so to say, if pushed hard? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Well my cables are quite thin..... I never thought I would be reaching quite so high anyway.
-
I don't advise you guys to swap output lead from a 120/150w psu to your 240w dell psu - basically the cable isn't rated at such power and this would result in:
- high voltage drop
- cable overheating
- low performances
The best way is to change the power tip - it's been tested by myself btw and you can actually see on your 120w/150w output lead the cable size and check online the rating. -
thx for the headsup pau1ow! so basically i would just cut off the tip and reconnect it via the internal wires to the 240w psu's cable?

Mine is a 90W cable by the looks of things, a 150W or 180W cable should be fine so long as it's from a quality supply.
Replacing the tip can be hard because making sure it's wired properly is more difficult and more likely to lead to a fire. -
hm, i guess ill try the cable first then and see how it goes...
-
If you know how to solder, got some heatshrink to make it look nitty + some small wire sleeves - I find it easier to just snap off the connector, buy the 5.5x2.5mm tip and re-solder it.
Just check the rating of the cable you have, and you're setif that was a 120w @20V adapter, be sure the manufacturer didn't fit cables that can handle 10A (as it would require for a heavy machine such as Meaker's)
I used to have fps drops in games with this tiny lead (bought loose), checked the rating and it would handle only up to 6A or so.
In benchmark, you won't see any difference since the power a) isn't as high as a proper game such as BF3 b) is intermittent.
Fitted back the Dell's and changed the tip, all OK.
Thicker and shorter the cable is, better the voltage and current will be handled. -
thanks for the info! ill check the cable once the PSUs arrive
ok, so i found another PSU with a 10A rating but with a voltage of 12. would that work as well? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
P=IV
Power = Current x voltage (Golden rule of electronics)
So if you lower one you have to raise the rating on the other to have the same rating. -
well duh, i know that
i was rather wondering if both the voltage and amperage rating of the cable would be critical or if just the amperage was the one that would otherwise be causing fps drops and an overheating cable

Hi guys,
thank you for this superb thread - I'm looking forward to buy a AMD 7970m for my p170hm in the near future, have read all 72 pages since yesterday ;-)
Hope the card will work with Chi-Mei matte display without any problems?
Greetings
F1r3 -
Hope so too
I got Chi-Mei too on my p170hm but not shure what to do. Wait and earn some money for m18x or just upgrade this one...
-
Have not found any information about the Chi-Mei Display (Europe) in the Thread, maybe i can collect an info by google ;-)
Update:
Searched google for "p170hm chi-mei amd 7970m" - it seems, that the p170em models come with Chi Mei N173HGE-L11 Displays, so this type of LCD-Screen should work together with 7970m or 680m
Greetings

Sounds good but one problem is stoping me to upgrade my p170hm its HDMI. I usually play games on my TV and after installing and flashing vbios HDMI will be lost and there is no solution. Mb 680m but its price too big for one card, so I decided to sell this one and buy in near future m18x
. Unless some shaman make a vbios with hdmi support )
-
well if u arent in a hurry i would postpone buying a new machine until haswell and the nextgen gpus come out
would only be couple of months or so...
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2 -
More like six months.
-
Oo nextgen gpus??? Sounds interesting but where did you get this info? I think 7970m and 680m will dominate for a year.
-
id say AMD like spring and Nvidia in the summer, so yeah, depending on which color u prefer it would either be 2-3 or 5-6 months
the 7970M came out in April 2012, 680M in....June, was it? so its almost been a year already!tempus fugit, my friend...

I do sense AMD is not too far off (I don't have insider info i'm afraid) but a well clocked 680M will still beat thoroughly the new batch at stock.
-
unless they bring out a successor with a 60% perf. bump
but even with the 7970M it might not really be worth it to upgrade (if compatible with the HM series), since it gives u about a 20% boost when OCed. well just have to wait and see i guess -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
No process change so without knowing anything else I can tell you it wont be
This gen was so big because it was a redesign + process change. -
I just don't see the 8970M appearing in a couple months, when there's yet to have been the slightest public mention of any new desktop card from which it could possibly come. AMD topped out at the 8870M in their announcement for a very clear reason.
-
Does anybody upgraded to a 7970m with chimei Matte Display in the p170hm?
-
Hey ho,
just ordered a 7970m from notebookbarebone/notebookguru here in germany - they will trade in my AMD 6970M for a good price.. can't wait for the new beast
Bought a Intel 2760QM also, so i hope to get some extra speed and put the machine through the limit
Greetings

good stuff, enjoy those new components buddy

Modded .inf for nvidia 314.07 Whql (optimised for Crysis3)

Man I'm so envy)) Please let us know will 7970m work on CHI-MEI display.
Can someone borow me money for 7970m?? =) -
Seems like my current max clocks are 1005/1560 core/mem. 3dMark13 is a stable to 1015 core but crysis 2 bench will crash at those clocks - at least with very brief testing 1005/1560 is stable and crysis 2 bench had a max temperature of 83C.
-
sounds great buddy
if u want more performance, try and put the mem clocks at stock and only oc the core. could be that the oced mem generates so much heat that the core cant be oced as much. only when uve got ur max. core clocks would i test the mem clocls again. that way ull get more of a perf. boost, since the gpu core is more important in that regard that the mem.

I pencil modded the vram to give me extra voltage but it only gave me an extra 100mhz (so +745 to + 850) or so even at 1.5v
-
pencil mod? hahaha that reminds me of those good old AMD Palomino and Thoroughbred Pencil mods
didnt even tho that such a thing could still work on today´s hardware
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It's a simple resistor network with the equation:
R1 = ((( Vout - (Indx ESR/2)) -0.7)/0.7)x R2 -
She's here, She works, she has much space for overclocking.. Running all benches @ Stock Clock - waiting for OC since a Game is not performing as well as i want.
So if you have a ChiMei FHD display, no Problem, works!

for some reason it's unstable in heaven benchmark and crysis 2 benchmark if I go any higher than the 1ghz core. Don't know what's the reason as there are no visible artifacts at any point - it will just crash the drivers or go to blue screen.
-
-
I'm @ AMD 13.2 Beta 6 at the Moment, seems to be stable, no BSOD or other problems - have read that the beta 6 Drivers offer a performance boost in relation to the 13.1 or 13.2 beta 5 drivers. Which drivers are you guys using at the moment?
-
still on beta3, i think....? have to check

Damn.. have to exchange my 7970m - cause she had burn marks before i placed her in my p170HM - i've taken photos and asked my reseller by phone, he said, maybe it is a production thing and i should place it in. Yesterday i sended them some pictures of the burn marks.. and.. yap.. it is a defective.. so they will exchange the card.. unlikely they are not in stock at the moment.. i have to wait.. i will not turn the laptop on, cause i fear that the defective card will damage my whole laptop.. but i want to use it.. narf!!!!!!! *sigh*
680M - yes... for 300 Euro extra
So i will wait till a new charge of 7970m's will be in stock - should be monday or tuesday notebookguru here in germany told me. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
The 680M is a very lovely card
But hopefully they get you one sorted soon.
