I think it is a driver problem.
After I put the new card into the laptop it only used windows vga drivers.
With those I was able to change the brightness (fn+what ever key is used)

After the modified nvidia driver installed I wasn't able to change it anymore.

In GPUZ the card is recognized but wont show the 4GB Vram
In Nvidia Inspector the whole card is recognized with all 4GB Vram
But like previous forum members already said I am only able to overclock to +135mhz.

The only time the GPU-Z recognizes the 4GB of VRAM is when the card is dead :D Mine is being RMA'd at clevo for free so I'm still good :D

    Yeah I read about it.
But goo0d for you that you will be getting a new one.

But I think it is weird that GPU-Z doesn't recognize it and Inspector recognized it right away.
Maybe after an update of GPU-Z

I just hope that Nvidia will soon include our Hardware ID's into the new drivers.
Otherwise we will be stuck to modify the drivers.

And hopefully the brightness issue will be solved :D

similar brightness issues have been reported with the 7970M in the m17x R2 and R3, theyre all driver related. wouldnt worry too much about it tho, upcoming drivers should solve this issue for both cards :)

btw: today after work im going to go get my 7970M! :D that and a new phone coming as well and NO time whatsoever to play around with either, argh! im gonna die :p

You should also grab this texture pack, the resolutions are anywhere from 2-8X higher than the official HD texture pack from Bethesda. I always thought Skyrim looked pretty good, but after some heavy .ini modifications, enabling 9 uGrids, and installing the texture pack I linked above, it is absolutely gorgeous! :D

Ok I will give it a try once I get home.
Do you think the performance will be going down a lot with everything still maxed out, or should the 680m still be able to handle it?

You won't have any problems. I've got everything maxxed beyond what the launcher allows with some .ini editing, even have 9 uGrids loading, and it run beautifully for me on my 7970M, and very cool (60C). I'd advise that you turn off FXAA however as it just blurs the entire image, you have MXAA enabled so it isn't necessary as your card can easily handle MXAA. If you encounter any loss in performance that you don't like, turn the AA down to 4x, which is more than enough.

I will give it a try.
Are you using the full version or the light version of the textures?

    60 C is quite low, I got 73 C max after 2 hours gameplay (Without fn+1)

I am using the full textures. As for the low GPU temps, I can only point toward the fact that Skyrim is heavily CPU dependent and the GPU core must not be being worked very hard. Most of my games put my temps around 70C (also without FN+1).

Yeah Skyrim barely stresses the GPU resulting in very low temps.

If I were to compare both my 7970m and 680m in my MSI, I'd say the 7970M runs a little bit cooler than latter - though Clevos EC fan for the 7970m in the EM is terrible - 680M's EC fan being much better which result in lower temps in the EM's.

    bmpm5,
Could you run 3dmark11 and 3dmarkVantage benchmarks with everything stock ? I'd like to check something.

I only had the brightness issue with a Custom .inf from Laptopvideo2go but not with the one I sent you. My brightness settings work perfectly fine now. I am surprised your ones don't so don't understand.

Maybe you need to do a clean install.

    Definitely a Driver problem.

    CRAP!

so i FINALLY got my 7970M, took my sweet time to install it, even expanded the area of the cooling pads in order to cover some additional components on the card, repasted with ICD7, installed it, switched the machine on and....nothing, no image :(

screen stays black, laptop is POSTing and booting into windows tho (i can hear the sounds, im able to log in via fingerprint sensor and shut down via keyboard shortcut, but all blindly)

reseated the card, checked that all vital components are properly covered by the heatsink and that all screws are tight, still nothing.

would appreciate any suggestions guys! otherwise im gonna have to declare this baby DOA and send it back to R&J, ugh...

    cheers

Did you uninstall previous drivers prior to putting the 7970M in, as well as run driver sweeper?

When I got my 7970M, I uninstalled all of my AMD display drivers (nVIDIA drivers in your case) through the Catalyst installation manager rather than control panel. I then rebooted into safe mode, ran driver sweeper (for an nVIDIA card, just select display drivers, leaving chipset and Physx alone) to remove all remaining pieces of the display drivers, and rebooted into safe mode again.

Once booted, I shut down the machine, removed my old card, installed the new card, and booted again. The monitor displayed a low-res Windows boot screen (due to no display drivers) and booted to a low-res desktop with no issues. Then I put in the provided driver CD (version 8.951.6.1), installed the drivers, rebooted, and everything was running normal with the new card.

Hopefully it is a driver issue, I'm thinking maybe something from the previous nVIDIA configuration is still on there causing conflicts.

that was one of my first thoughts actually... but as far as i know it wouldnt even POST with the regular vBIOS, since the 7970M would need an IGP to be present.

@WallZii: thanks for ur help mate, but i highly doubt its a driver issue. when the machine boots it should at least show the splash screen and i also should be able to go into the system BIOS and SEE an image (at that stage no system drivers are loaded yet, and that would include any gpu drivers under windows). but thats not the case... everything works fine as i said, since i can hear the sounds, but theres just no image output :(

Ahh, sorry didn't realise you weren't getting the splash screen either. :(

That is bad news indeed. Have you tried hooking up an external monitor to see if you get a display that way?

That's definitely not driver related - to me, the issue is either:
    - RJtech havent flashed the vbios - I installed a Clevo 7970M with Enduro ON in my 16F2 a while ago and that was actually starting but without any image/display, even with an external monitor hooked up - same as you really.
    - An incompatibility with your HM (screen or just because you used a NVIDIA GPU)

The first option is the most likely though.
->You need to blind flash your card with Wallzii vbios.

Same happened to me, and with the wallzii vbios it worked well... (thank you, one more time ^^)
hope your first boot option is usb... unless, it will be a bit harder... (maybe not, you just have to remove your hdd, check there is no cd/dvd in your drive, and you will be able to boot with the usb, this should work)
    then : "atiflash.exe - p 0 -fs -fp file.rom" with your bootable usb device ;)
    but if it's the screen... I don't know !
I just know that with hannstar display there is no issue, with the LG it depends, and with the 120hz there is no way !

hmmm.... atiflash is definitely an option actually! boot order is no problem i can just change it with my 485m plugged in (as it is right now). i will try that first thing after work today! wallzii? would u mind sending me a link to ur vbios via pm? ;) would be muuuuch appreciated!
as for the screen,i doubt thats the case cuz only the p170hm machines had the issues with the different screens, as for the p150hm it should just be plug n play :)

thx for ur input guys,u definitely raised my mood and hopes a bit already :D

@sosa106: what are the flash commands for (besides flashing the vbios of course :p)? lets see, maybe i can find out myself... ;)
edit: aaah got it, its for bypassing all checks and force flashing ;)

@wallzii: btw, how did u dump ur vBIOS in the first place? did atiflash work for you in that regard? since it wasn´t possible to do that on the EM machines... just curious :)

    guys!

thank you SO much! the blind flash worked like a charm! :) i did a dry run first with my 485M, checking how long it takes for the command line to be ready after pressing the power button, then checked (lucky for me actually) if the keyboard buttons match the input (it didnt for the "-", had to press another button on my kb to get that :D) and i also added the command "-reboot" before the file.rom in order to be able to know for sure when the flashing process was finished.

so anyways, im writing this message now on my new 7970M beast :D next step: stress test the crap outta this card and see how far it can downclock / overclock ;)

happy times = perma smile :D

(if i could give u guys any more rep i would.... ;) )

oh heck yeah, especially since two buddies of mine are coming over for a SERIOUS GAMING WEEKEND! :D

if anyone is interested, here is some preliminary data on my card:

    - voltages are 0.82v / 0.90v / 1.05v on 2D/light 3D/3D load respectively
    - OC/UC works without a hitch with MSI AB, altho i cant go further down than the stock 300/150 Core/Mem when i try to underclock (for idle work = silent machine) anyone have any suggestions?
    - 20 min. Kombustor (all settings max) resulted in a max temp. of 76/77 °C (alternating), which is totally fine by me :)
    - OC went up to 1070 core and 1680 Mem before i got freezes / saw artifacts. looks very promising i must say, altho i still have to run stability tests with kombustor/benchmarks :)

one more thing: when OCing i had to put load onto the card with kombustor in order for the new clocks to properly show up and be implemented. without load it would just stick to idle clocks. not that im complaining, its just an observation :)

alrighty, so far so good! now out into the sun and enjoy ur weekends guys! i know i will :D

    cheers

Hey just some info for anybody that ordered the 680m from RJTECH.
I contacted them because I couldn't find a driver that would install (also the bios didn't recognize the card)
I only got the driver to install with the help of LaptopNut and his modified .inf

Here is the reply I got from RJTECH regarding the driver issue.

I think the problem is the system BIOS, it does not recognize the video card so it gives you 0000 before .1558. You can check your BIOS and see if it recognize the 680M video card.
The similar problem shows up in P170EM if the system BIOS is older than .04, it will not recognize the video card, we need to update the BIOS to support the 680M card.
Unfortunately, Clevo does not release the BIOS for HM model to support 680M card yet, so your solution might be the only solution for HM model right now.

So it seems like we have to modify the nvidia drivers until someday a new bios would be released.

Or is anyone able to put the 680m into their p170hm without modifying any drivers?

Awesome! Glad to see everything is up and running for you. I'm really perplexed about the voltage thing, that my card runs at 1.00V on load and yours runs at reference 1.05V voltage on load when we are using the same vBIOS. I remember svl7 mentioning before that he flashed a card with the vBIOS I supplied and his voltages were reference as well, but I thought maybe it was an oddity. This pretty much confirms that something weird is going on with my card and load voltage.

Those are some nice OC clocks for sure! I've pushed to 1675 memory however my benches seemed to get worse at those clocks for some reason, 1650 seemed to be the sweet spot. I still can't get the core beyond 935, I really wish I was able to go into the mid-to-high 1000's like the rest of you guys! :D

If you extracted the files into data/textures as you aid, they should be working and ready to go. There is no data file that you have to check or enable, the game pulls the textures automatically.

That's awesome, but I was wondering why his GPU score was low on the stock vbios with software OC :p

My P170HM3 with GTX675M, also an unsupported card which reports as "empty" in BIOS setup, works without modded driver .inf... ;)

if you have nvidia inspector, open it up and press the chart button, and then right click and enable graphing of the mcu(memory controller unit) then run futuremark. afterwards if the mcu graph goes to 100% that means the memory controller is bottlnecking the card, which means you should overclock the memory more to attain more performance.

    Ahh ok,

    good to know.
Maybe nvidia really just has to add the hardware ids of the cards provided by rjtech to their drivers.

Maybe the next driver revision will work without a hassle :D
