Falcon, I had the same problem as you, and made a post a few pages back. Unfortunately, the only thing that could get me back to stock was a system restore. I'm a bit annoyed that not only am I stuck with 167.43, but I'm stuck with the 167.43 that was installed on my system by PCMW.

I'm thinking there's an image quality setting somewhere, or something similar, that gets changed when we reinstall drivers.

I had something happen very similar to this. I tried different drivers (using driver sweeper each time in safe mode to clean out the old ones) and had a huge hit in both FPS in games and 3dMark scores. I ended up also doing a system restore for things to go back to normal.

I've since made too many other changes to my computer to do this again...

I also went ahead and did a fresh install of vista after my retailers "recovery" partition failed me. And im back to 9300ish 3d marks. I guess ill just stick with this driver until I encounter any serious problems in one of my games :)

thanks for the update though guys :)

I think it's ridiculous that we lose performance if we change drivers and then switch back. I did notice that Aero started to act weird each time I installed a new driver. I had a hard time activating it, and it would only switch to Aero after I opened a few windows. It could be a Vista problem.

    I`m having good results with 174.31 .
I heard a lot of 88M GTX users having good results with it also.

174.82 on vista64 still cuts my clock speeds in half..

How do you get this one running on full speed with the M570RU(-U) 8800M GTX?

Have anyone ever tryed to dissect the 167.43 drivers and the ie. 174.31 drivers??

Ive been trying to compare the installs of the to drivers above and ive come to that conclusion, that there are atleast some diffrence in how its installed. For example, there are several of files that are diffrent in names between the two, also a rough readthrough of the .inf's, which also have diffrent names, there are some .dll's that are left out in the 167.43 ones

Maybe we just need to mod the newer drivers slightly, and we would be able to use newer drivers without DC and having to do bios updates?

This leads me to think that the 167.43 ones are just forced to work with the 8800M GTX as it is atm.

I am so very far away from being able to dissect drivers and get them to actually work after modification, but maybe laptopvideo2go should know about this.
If someone can fix em wouldnt it be them? :)

They should be able to ;)

But well, maybe its just me thinking about this, as it is like that with other drivers aswell ?? Im no real modder, so I was just wondering about it as I came across it while modding the resolutions the 167.43 will accept :)

Well, according to this guy, it's a driver issue that nvidia know about and are in the process of fixing and in fact we're not quite restricted to 167.43, there are some others that work (any older than that should - I am in fact using 167.51 with no issues).

I know its an M15x thread, but it seems to be the same issue

Read the whole thread and I too hope this gets fixed soon. Does anyone believe it has to do with the "power saving" function of the bios or OS? I read a thread a few months ago stating how people see the clock speed change due to the demand needed from the GPU, i.e. testing it in different power modes.

Do you all think the driver and/or bios are not allowing the GPU to go into full power mode?

When I test my GPU on "balanced", the results show a low clock/shader speed. When I put it in full power, these numbers are higher. Everyhing is still stock on my machine.

    I have a NP5792 with Vista x64.

I installed the 174.82 drivers on my m570ru-u with 8800m gtx and got 9600 points in 3Dmark06 so I can recommend that driver :) Not sure if it`s the best one out there though.

On Vista64, this driver still cuts clock speeds in half for me..

I fixed the drivers problem on my system. got 9460 3dmarks with 174.82 drivers. No downclocking. How to fix: open Nvidia control panel of your new driver and set the multi threading option (making use of dual core proc) form AUTO to ON.

Ok, this is what I get: http://i27.tinypic.com/2cps2hf.jpg
    But are my clocks now 500&799 or 383 & 301? -.-

I'm getting maximum 69°c when playing Trackmania Nations Forever when the fans aren't going fully so could I overclock it by doing the "Find Max Core" & "Find Max Mem"?

    your clocks are 500/799,

if u use forceware 167.43 u can overclock with atitool, u should easily reach 550//880

    just try,

btw. if u can't OC via software u have to overclock via biosflash

    regards

Powermizer will drop the frequencies in 2D mode, ie. when not gaming.
You should get 600/1500/900 easy, but at those frequencies, consider using full FN+1 fan speed.
Riva Tuner should work if AtiTool doesn`t, 174.31 is OCable.

Look around the forums to see feedback about particular driver version. There is no clear answer, and sometimes different driver versions work best for particular games.

Ok, so I downloaded the updated driver, 17482. I popped in Hellboy.. BluRay of course, and I get this message saying the driver is incompatible with my dvd software. Has anyone else gotten this and know of a fix?

I've rolled back my driver for now.... really want to watch a movie! The new driver works great with Assassins Creed! I guess until there's a fix I'll keep the new driver on hand for gaming and roll it back for video! blahhh

Yea, you`ll need a digitally signed driver.
Look for the latest 174.x driver with WHQL.
    I think it`s 174.31 or something.
@taraquin , it`s odd that yours is like that. But a bigger clock means better performance :D
