Doesn`t matter that it supports Optimus. You get nowhere without BIOS and driver updates. There are several laptops with GTX 460M out now that supposedly have Optimus, but it is disabled.

....bump?
Nothing else to discuss? I'd like more opinions on the 485 vs the 6970..?
Or is everyone waiting to see if eurocom actually produces the 6970 tomorrow? -
There aren't enough 6970M benchmarks to answer that question, and there won't be for a couple weeks.
-
Just noticed, your sig.
shouldn't it be the 2630QM?
-
Tomshardware has their review of the eurocom panther with the 6970 up:
AMD's Mobility Radeon HD 6970 In CrossFire On Eurocom's Panther : AMD Attacks On the Mobile Front -
Is Eurocom giving solid ETAs, or are they just calling it a preorder?
Oops, yeah. -
Gosh Kevin, you fixed your sig and did another mistake
-
Looks like its a 20k p GPU vantage solution, the crossfire 6970. At slighty higher price than 460m sli which is a 13.6k p GPU vantage solution.
Good job AMD -
I confirmed with sales at Eurocomm they do not have the 6970m yet and they expect to receive it in two weeks. They have held off from selling the SB Clevos due to the Intel snafu.
Hopefully, the Intel mess would be cleared in that time frame as I want my 6970m! -
Intel mess cleared in two weeks? Try two months, at a minimum.
Do to the Sandy Bridge recall, this thread has no purpose. -
Still nice to dream and hope right?
-
The Intel snafu is also bad news for Nvidia because a lot of people who would have bought 460 or 485 GTXs will have the option of buying a 6970 instead once the machines are available again.
I'm assuming the 6970s will be ready before the corrected Sandy Bridge chipsets. -
eurocomm called me back and said the 6970m is available for the panther and leopard models - SB ones are coming in mid Feb.
-
Are they shipping engineering samples? How come no one else has them?
-
They told me they are not engineering samples- I guess other resellers have a NDA going on or something - but still with their options it is still a good price- from a 5870 to a 6970 $175 but to a dual 6970 crossfire $544 (still beats the crap out of 485m- almost at the same price for a lone 485! much less dual 485 for $1300? -give me break-
-
Hmmm... Well I already told Mythlogical to change my order to the 6970 if this Intel delay takes longer than it takes for the 6970 to come out... By that pricing, it looks like it will be roughly $250 cheaper? maybe even $300 cheaper than the 485m?
-
The upgrade from a gtx 460m to the 6970m is currently listed as a $75 increase. Has this been finalized yet? I remember someone on the first page mentioned it was $66.
-
I do hope that $75 figure is accurate, but I'm not getting my hopes up until there's confirmation from a US seller.
-
it is 66 usd according to eurocom website
-
$66 USD, $75 CAD.
-
I am waiting for official benches then... it looks like AMD has hit the jackpot.
-
I really do hope its that cheap of an upgrade. I cant dish out the ridiculous price of a 485
-
Eurocom also listed the 470M at around $475 pre-release. That worked out well.....
I'll believe it when I see it somewhere other than Eurocom. -
I guess that what's supposed to be its real price... $475.
-
Hmmm, now it makes me wonder. 30 day return policy starting 1/28/11, if enough info comes out I may have to make a return and buy one with 6970 if it saves me $400!!!
I'm still leary though how eurocom got ahold of these yet no other vendors did? -
Yeah, I'm leaning towards the 6970M, pretty heavily. I am a pretty staunch in my comfort with Nvidia products, but that money is speaking very loudly, especially with there being at best a 10% performance gap. I could pocket the money, or buy an SSD. IIf a P170 + 6970M is less than $1600, I'm on it. If the card is only like $200 cheaper than the 485M, I might go green anyway.
re: Eurocom
I don't believe Eurocom, until someone shows up and posts GPU-Z screens and benchmarks, then shows me a picture of the exposed die to prove it's not an ES.
How would they score such a golden goose product, which Sager and Pro-Star haven't? It's never happened before, not with one Clevo related product. Why would it be Eurocom? I'm pretty sure AMD knows that getting them to Sager first is sound business.
At best I'll say they managed to get there hands on a few, less than 10. -
Yeah. If AMD can truly price their 6970m $66 more than a GTX 460m, then either AMD is taking no profit or nVidia is hugely price gouging. I know nVidia does that anyhow, but it would be major egg on their face if AMD's product is that much cheaper, yet closely performs. Obviously with a Sager in hand soon with GTX 485m I'm in a different predicament. It'll cost me to return, plus get on the end of the waiting list if I re-order.
-
Yeah, the 6970m is really looking promising...
I'm definitely going to purchase it when it becomes available.. -
They're both price gouging for mobile parts. The same GPU sell for less in desktop form and still make a profit.
-
To go a step further: the source card, the 6850, currently retails for $179.99, so don't think AMD isn't making bank on each 6970M they sell to OEMs.
Neither company is innocent, but Nvidia takes it into absurdity, thus making AMD look like saints in the process. -
eurocom price has increased
1/2X 6970m:3?? 480m:5?? 485m:7?? (USD
but now 2/3 6970m:504 480m:873 485m:1048 (USD
dont know why are they still selling 480m at that price.......... -
The 460m is $303. Something isn't right there. You can get an upgrade from a 460m to 485m at Sager for +$495. At Eurocom the difference is $750.
-
That's a crazy price for a GPU, IMO.
-
Here's another review of the 6970M:
AMD Radeon HD 6970M Review w/ Eurocom - HotHardware -
I really wish they'd do some 2d tests as well. That's an area where ATi has been behind in the past generation. Even Tom's, who made the 2D benchmark, doesn't do them.
-
Both Eurocom Racer & Neptune delayed until 1st April, which is also a date funny joke could happen.
-
Just as expected.... April is a long long time from now. By that time Nvidia would have sold many 485Ms.
-
It's like a godsend gift to AMD..
-
Double agent engineer sabotage confirmed.

Extremely promising review that. Tom's Hardware seemed to have severe issues with the crossfire setup where it often performed worse, these guys seemed to have a lot more luck and got expected performance.
Looks like a good setup for the cash! -
yah would not order from eurocom anyway-
but I am just drooling over the prospect of dual 6970 once they have SB versions of the 8100. -
Hopefully AMD Releases the 6970 ASAP so that everyone that purchased the 485 will actually have a comparable cheaper option. At the very least maybe it will bring down the price of the 485? Although, I really dont see that happening. The timing of all of this is Horrible for Nvidia but could be a golden opportunity for AMD.. Unless they totally screw up the release. I guess only time will tell.
-
The edge nVidia had was that it is "nVidia", and it was in the market before the 6970, and the slight edge it has to the 6970.
If they compete one-to-one when the Sandy Bridge recall is fixed, with a huge price gap, many will sway towards AMD....... -

The link below is of interest too...
AMD Radeon HD 6970M reviewed: major leap from HD 5870M, not quite a GTX 485M -- Engadget -
I didn't see any links to benchmarks though, even though it says there are.
-
^^ There are 3 links to the benches sites at the bottom of the article where it says : Source
But the benches aren't new, same engineering samples w/o proper BIOS/Drivers -
Well hopefully Sager will get some samples in their hands in the near future.

Thing is though, what a lot of these reviews aren't picking up on is cost. If these 6970m cards ARE in the 5870/GTX470m's pricing ball park, they're by far and away the most cost effective option.
Even if the 485m does retain the crown, what good is that if it costs twice as much...I'd rather have a crossfire setup!
[actually I'd quite like to find an upgrade kit for my X8100 too lol] -
It's all going to come down to price for me. If I can a 485 for say $100 more than a 6970, then I'll probably get the 485.
If the 485 is going to cost $250+ more than a 6970, then I'll take the savings and get the 6970. The performance difference isn't enough to warrant a large price difference.
Of course there's always a chance Nvidia will lower the price of the 485s to compete, but I guess we'll see. -
With the intel sanfu on SB- this gives die hard 485 fans to take a second look at the 6970 if they are looking at a big price difference!
