hmm. hey guys i got something that i wanted to ask you about, its regarding the right fan intakes... it seems that i cant see the fan even when flashing it with light, unlike the left one which is really appearant and did not need any extra light to be seen also its really really quite unlike the left one which is always loud and now its starts to creeps me out, all the temps are normal so i dont think they forgot to put it in but i want to check its speed and if anyone can confirm if they have the same looks of it from the back of the laptop i would appreciated it

so, i just tried 3dmark11 Basic edition, set at an fixed 720p resolution.

Man, gtx 470m just got raped, FPS was in the low teens-single digits.

way to make my recent purchase obsolete, nice job Futuremark.

Says the person with one of the top mobile graphics cards currently available. If I made a benchmark called Sovietmark and coded it for even Intel GMA's would get framerates in the high 60's, everyone would be happy. Yet the GTX 470M would still be pumping out hundreds of more frames than the integrated garbage.

I think we should sue futuermark for raping, and we would get them 10 to 15 years in jail. We would all be happy this period.

The overclocked 470M tests amazingly in every single game. Why let the synthetic tests set your standards?

the 470m will definitly kick the hell out of the 460m (using logic: it did the same with the superior 480m)
on side note nvidia added the 470m to the driver list but it doesn't have drivers yet xD hopefully soon :(

470M SLi..drool. Now toss in sandy bridge with the refresh and you have a killer DTR. When is the 120hz screen due out for the X7200? I might consider getting one after SB + display upgrade and 570M/580M SLi is out.

well given the standard of the np7280 chassis itself and the decent laptop cooler? will it overheat as close as the 480m will do? lets say 2 laptops (np7280) that only differs in gpu (one with 470m and one with 480m)

also what is the raw performance difference between 470m at 480m taking out external aspects like OC, heat, price blah blah...only performance inside those cards.

The GTX 470M has a much lower wattage than the GTX 480M so that will make it run cooler. I don't know about the performance difference but I always hear about it being very close.

We are not finding either the 480M or 470M have any heat issues. Especially in a chassis like the NP7280 - X7200. As to the performance difference that is still not totally confirmed, although many are preferring the 470M because of the lower power draw and they cost less.

I notice Kobalt UK has some good benchmarks here comparing the GTX 460M, GTX 470M and the GTX 480M. They have done synthetic and game benchmarks.

Just a thought: could the used drivers be of influence ?
I noticed the 460M and 470M were tested with the 259.39 driver, where the 480M was tested with the 260.99 driver.

I read people having performance optimisations by going from 259.51 to 260.99 and 259.39 is even older...

    What's your thoughts ?

i think so far they haven't fully developed the drivers for 480 and 470, in the news i just read nvidia has good compatible drivers for 460. it really sucks because supposed to be 480 is the flagship concerning the 4xx series and it is still running on stock drivers.

i also saw here in the forums that there is a little headroom for OCing the 480m...

Larger memory bus, more VRAM and 352 actual cores vs 288 theoretical should give GTX 480M better scores in 3DMark11's tessellation and DirectCompute tests.

I'd be more interested in why Kobalt didn't include the GTX480M in their BBC2 game benchmarks.

    Anyone tried these drivers yet?
    v265.90 Windows 7/Vista 64bit | Quadro Desktop - LaptopVideo2Go Forums
Because they rock! I'm only on a 260m but they drastically remove load times. GTA 4 used to take around a minute now takes 15 secs. Dunno how they did it because I thought it was all up to the hard drive. Be sure to do a clean install and use the modded inf. As usual adjust brightness won't work but the performance increase is great! And they are overclockable.

hmm.. i was thinking about upgrading my damn old drivers (259.31 or somthin like it)
anyway i really use the brightness as my eyes are very sensetive to light, also i dont know how to do the upgrading stuff with the modded inf, is there like dummies guide ?? or is there a full ready to instal 470m modded inf all in one file and all i have to do is click "next" :D ?? (that would be awesome xD)

@reaversedge the link I posted is reported to be good but without brightness control. The 260.99 are official ones and have brightness controls but they haven't been released for the 470m's.

@neol just download it from the link execute it and it will extract, download the modded inf and stick it in the display.driver folder replacing the oder one. Then go back to the root folder and run the setup. Remember to click clean install. As you have drivers older than the 260.xx series, it will do a restart automatically and continue the install.

i went to the link to install it but i found plenty of them complaining about the damn BSOD but its seems that most of them are on the 8xxx,9xxx so it might be alright for us the 2xx,3xx,4xx to try this but i really really really hate that screen :(
so im gonna hold my horses from this one for a while but will be keeping an eye on it, how is working for you widezu69 ?

thanks, before i give it a try just in case that i dont like the brightness issue, when i uninstall this driver and install the 260.99 will the brightness control will go back as normal? im cautious because i also consider some consequences when i install a software in my system.

@neol no blue screens at all for me. I haven't heard any report of blue screens from current gen card users: 200 series onwards. Give them a try I doub you will run into any problems. Seriously want a 470m though!

Couple of comments for you guys on the benchmarks linked to by LaptopNut on page 22:

Drivers - I used the most recent compatible WHQL versions for each GPU at the time (which are the same as of today) so technically the 480M benchmark is fair because it is compatible with newer drivers than the other two cards. Realistically it is a little skewed but I did run the benchmarks again on the GTX 480M afterwards with 259.39 and it was very close in performance. The reasoning at the time in including the 480M was so that we could show how the "older" card compared to the newer ones but it might have been better to have left them out thinking about it now (see below).

Yup. 3DMark11 isn't that pretty too look at but it does do the job! All the Futuremark scores were an average of two runs so the scores are very reliable. Performance with different drivers was virtually identical.

I didn't include the 480M in the BC2 benchmarks for two reasons:

1/ We were about to stop offering the card because the last stock was running very low and there aren't any more comming in

2/ Unfortunately I didn't have one available at the time which I could spend the time with to do proper benchmarks in the game - I did the Futuremark ones on a seperate occasion though with exactly the same hardware each time.

Also I didn't feel it sensible to do the high test in 3DMark11 as it's really a little too much for mobile GPUs IMO. 3DMark06 is a little out of date but I know that people still like/use it - same with Vantage. Added to that, seeing as you can't run 3dMark11 on a non DX11 GPU you can use Vantage to compare the 4** series with other non DX11 cards for possible upgrade comparisons and so on :)

I'm planning to do the same benchmarks and hopefully some more games with other chassis when I have time, 460M SLI is next on the cards (excuse the pun!) in X7200 and X8100, then 470SLI in X7200.
