The 7000's (.28 process) are going to appear before the end of the year, but they're going to be midrange parts (much slower than 6970). They'll be a lot cheaper to manufacture.

The fast 7000's won't come until Q2 of next year, according to the latest roadmap I saw.
This breaks the previous pattern of releasing the high end GPU first with a new process.

No one seems to know when the 6990 is coming out at all, not even a peep on the rumor sites

8130 won't be able to take it without upgrading the power brick. (there could be other issues as well)

As a design goal they'll probably try to make the 580 only use as much power as the 485, but who knows how successful they'll be in that.

It's still the same .40 process, and same basic architecture, but with a redesign they can lay out things more efficiently.

I find it funny people saying that it will cost $900 or so as an estimate. My estimate would be that it would cost around $600 and the 485 will drop in price...

Um, we got a (possibly speculated) price quote from a reputable seller. I'm going to believe them for now.

Ahh, I didnt mean to be rude. Just when i talked to a vendor today when I was looking I asked about the 485m dropping in price and he said "Most likely yes, don't know by how much yet" So I just figured that the $900 for the 590 seems a bit high

I really wish theres at least a 20%+ performance increase in the 580 (for the high price we are paying) but i know thats wishful thinking :(

The stock 580M is probably about 10% faster, and you can stretch another 10-15% with overclocking. If you cant live with 20-25% more performance over a stock 485M, wait until Kepler hits next year.

We'll find out in a few days!

For me, I want to upgrade my machine and get a 580M for a few reasons. First, my battery here lasts me like 10 minutes. Secondly, I have the 280M. While I can overclock it somewhat, it's really not that powerful in relation to anything within the last 4 years. And the 485M (less powerful than 580M) beats my card in SLI. Plus, I would like to switch to a mobile GPU. I can't max out my CPU now, and a 2720QM would serve me almost as well. Since I have headroom right now, why not get the slightly-less-powerful-in-working-conditions card and the uber-powerful mobile GPU?

Plus, the card might be a lot, but I could get a 2720QM with a 3D screen and a 580M/485M + 8GB RAM for less than I paid for my laptop originally. So yeah, I think it's a good thing.

I wouldn't take that for granted. New processes are going to cost more by virtue of having to pay for the upgrade to that process. Sure, you'll have more chips per wafer, but you're also assuming that yield will be high on this new process. That's not always the case. A classic example is the first fermi chips. Yields were supposedly very low.

I think it's a GREAT time to buy... Sandy Bridge, Clevo P1x0, and 485M are all mature so unless Intel/Clevo/Nvidia shoots themselves in the head with cheap manufacturing and quality control (cough... AMD), the next batch are guaranteed winners.

Use it for a year, and when Ivy Bridge/Kepler/Clevo lighted keyboards are 'mature' late in 2012, dump this years beauty for $1000-1500 on Craigslist/eBay and buy a nice shiny new one.

I think we were talking about 'Tick' or 'Tock' earlier in this thread... I'm a 'Tock' guy for this very reason. Let the first adopters feel the pain of the recalls, BIOS issues, etc.

Basing your purchase on the performance of one single game is rather unwise, unless it's the only game you play 24/7, in which case a monster desktop will suit you better than any laptops. TW2 is easily one of the highest demanding games on the market, and it's definitely a rarity.

The 460M you have can play most of today's games fluidly at max or close to max settings at 1080p. If you are an absolute gaming enthusiast who cares about every FPS, why didn't you just buy a 485M in the first place?

nope. 6970M overclocked in xfire still dips below 60 sometimes. graphics arent maaxed either. SSAO is off and so is oversampling.

It could have some graphical issues though. Like the Witcher 1 had some issues for me with my 280M; for no reason it'd randomly dip to 10 FPS sometimes, but normally runs between 30 and 60 at near maxed out. The problem fixed itself randomly sometime after. All in all I think their graphical engine, like some RPGs, isn't *that* perfect/optimized. Fallout series comes to mind.

We won't know until we see in Witcher 2. XD.

For one, the developers are pretty cool about it and made it DRM free. That's a lot of good trust for us. Secondly, it's graphically amazing and impressive and long, with story tie-ins to everything you do, as well as your save data from The Witcher 1 Enhanced Edition. It has good game mechanics too, apparently. It's highly recommended by most people.

I think that the 580m is a better choice than kepler gpus for those who are planning to upgrade in this year. this is coz the 580m is the last of fermi generation and has been refined and optimized to the max and can be cosidered a good investment for the next couple of years.

On the other hand, I would expect the first batch of Kepler gpus to be buggy ( remember the 480m and how they improved the architecture so the 470m beats it). It is always the case with todays Hi-tech; never buy a fresh technology. Instead wait for the last mods/releases.

Exactly my thoughts. This is why I think the 7000M series NOR whatever nVidia's next series is will be a good idea to buy. It's always good to let them get used to the architecture and optimize it properly. It's sad that the 280M/285M weren't more in line with the GTX200 series' architecture (I don't know the name), and simply copied the older G92b one. Now the 485M flagship (not even counting the 580M upcoming like next week) is better than SLI of the previous gen's 285M flagship. Plus DX11.

I'd edit it to " Be cautious with every new gen/release regardless of how many optimizations happened". You can't rely on the 580M just because it's the last fermi as there are no set-in-stone tendancies anymore. Any new refresh may have more issues than a totally new tech.

Yeah well I'm not going to buy it just now, like right when it comes out. As usual, I wait a couple of months and just scope out the situation, then I make a logical decision as to whether I want or need it. If the answer is yes, I cover my bases, check the warranty, read the fine print, and then finally pull the trigger :)

It IS a lot of money, after all.

    Two reasons:

    1) I couldn't afford it right then, at the time of the purchase.

    2) I wanted to skip the 485M and go for the next best thing, which was my plan all along. To space out my purchases and keep things current and fresh.

The sad part is that if a game or benchmark runs choppy on the 485m it will run choppy as well on the 580m also.

When something runs choppy you need to upgrade with something 2x 3x times more powerfull, not just 10-15% more powerfull.
Thats why the smartest thing to do is wait, with your current config for that chopiness.

    Sis 8mb integrated graphics near k6-2 cpu, titanium 4200 64mb, desktop 6800 128mb, 6800XT 128mb, 9600GT, 460m sli > looking forward to 680 or 780 sli(if 780m sli will still be slot compatible)

The only question is , will my i7 950 still be enough when the 780m sli will exist ?

    Sorry for my multiple posts.
But now a very sane question.

Why would one need 580m sli in laptop ?
What games is such a person playin ?
Is he going to be satisfied by such a purchase ?

Why not get a cheap desktop instead and why spend a sick tonne of money for such an expensive piece of technology.

    He must have "special" needs.
Thats the only reason i can find.

Well, the SLI machines take up little space compared with a desktop and are portable. Easier to fold up a laptop and tote 12-15 lbs with PSU and screen than a 40 lbs desktop and a 12 lbs screen. Lots of college students may want lots of power but have little room to put it, or someone that takes their machine back and forth between a couple places. I agree it's a little overkill, especially since a single top end GPU is really more than sufficient for any game out there.

One.de lists the GTX 580m for the P170HM with date of 7/1/2011...
    http://www.one.de/shop/product_info...=config&products_id=4913&grt=1&tar=19&nav=off

The price seems to be the same as for the GTX 485 a few days ago...

@Bytales: Why not? You´ve got a X7200 with expensive hardware yourself... why did you go for 460m SLI when a 460m play most games at high settings?
In my case, if I wouldn´t have just bought a pair of GTX 485m I would go for the 580m, because me and a friend play weekly in a cafe some LAN sessions and I like to play at highest settings and don´t want to upgrade every 6 months ;).

I prefer notebooks as my primary machines because even the desktop replacement models are still more convenient to move than a desktop and monitor. Why SLi top of the line cards? So my programs and games run as smoothly as possible. Finally, honestly, because I wanted to for a long time and because I can.

Why get a V6 or V8 when a four banger will do? Why a sports car when a used Prius can work? Why bother with a calculator when an abacus can do the job eventually?

Not to mention exotic cars, homes with more than two bedrooms, air conditioning, sunglasses, designer clothes, higher Internet speeds...

We spend money to improve our standards of living because we can and because it makes us happy. I wasn't always able to do this, now that I can I will :)

Exactly right, Evolution. Besides, in this world of high end PC users, let me seriously ask. If you were offered a maxed out X7200, would you decline and make the processor weaker because you "don't need all that power"? =3.

No, I'm quite sure you'd take it. If alone for the bragging rights of having the most powerful laptop in existence. If someone has the spare cash for it, why not let him buy? Better than spending it on a drug/drinking habit or something, no?

Yes, why all that? you have nicely highlighted the materialistic greed of all humanity. And as i understand it your logic is that because car nuts get a v6 or v8 instead of a regular car, laptop nuts are justified in getting an Sli machine or even swapping out their previous top-of-the-line card with the one that comes next week. Your explanation sounds nice, but you have missed out the more fundamental issue.

Buying the best car and the best laptop will make you happy - for all of that one week after you buy it. Then comes the next golden apple and the next one after that. This is not real happiness but a transient one. We jump from one thing to another hoping to run into true happiness around the corner. But I haven't so far.

So, the more fundamental question is WHY do people behave this way and want to accumulate so much in the first place? Why the golden apple when silver apple will do? Another point to remember is that you don't get to carry your car or your laptop or your house with you beyond the grave but you can leave behind a legacy of good deeds.

The other fundamental issue (as Bytales points out) is "what does your SLi machine run today that my non-SLi machine cannot run to the point where i cannot play/use it?"

Note: ("Why bother with a calculator when an abacus can do the job eventually?" This is a separate issue and i do not include it in my discussion. This discussion is "why golden apple when silver apple will do" and the calculator question belongs in the discussion "should we continue to remain as cavemen?")

Yes, I would take it provided it was coming to me legit. I am greedy too after all which is why i got my gaming laptop at all. Definitely better to spend on super cool laptop than drug habit but much better is to give it to the starving and the needy or even to save it for your own future, I think.

Agreed. Even with the 580m, one may expect issues ( e.g heat in the desktop ones). I hope they make an efficient GPU out of this one.

I wonder if future games or apps are going to really benefit from the raw power of those chips. It is interesting that games like Crysis 2 run on the PS3 which is generations old while people are spending 500+ on pc gpus and still feel they need more to reach the intended experience.

I'm already saving up for a notebook with this GPU, and when Battlefield 3 is released, I'll need all the power I can get. Plus, with next gen consoles still looking to be several years away, I think PC games will have a resurgence.

It doesn't matter if next gen consoles come out tomorrow. If they want to sell, they need to be cheap. Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo aren't going to make a $800-1000 console to sell for $400 or so at launch. That's going to break their banks, and that's probably what it will take to produce comparable power to a high-end desktop PC these days. Consoles will never be on par with the PC as long as they remain cheap, and cheapness is what console users want.

As for Battlefield 3, I know it's supposed to make use of the PC's power, but if they optimize it, I'm sure entry level DX10 GPUs (like my 280M) should be able to run it DX10 version at modest settings. We just have to wait for minimum specs and/or the open beta later this year to come out.

Im new to computer gaming, i usually play on a console, but I agree with geforce. The new gaming consoles wont be out for quite some time considering microsoft's recent release of the xbox 360 slim.

Also the reason that consoles can still run games like bfbc2, and crisis 2 is because the games are actually different in the way that the graphics settings are adjusted, the level of detail at close distance is very good on consoles, but at far away distances the level of detail is pitiful, which allows for smooth 1080p gameplay of even the most modern games.

Getting a computer now is good idea because gaming consoles are getting outdated, after all the 360 only has a half gig of ram!

The the 360 has static RAM I believe, and it should be just a few MB not 512MB. As for their "slim", that's just a ploy. Nintendo popped up with the Wii U, to release next year. Microsoft is now hard at work to not lose the console race, and they want to make a console they can release at least in 2013; though it's just a rumor, the source was apparently very reliable. Microsoft has bad management, and only cares about money, rather than a good fanbase/happy customers. Don't let their new innovations for the Xbox fool you. The 360 slim has the SAME hardware as the others. I.E. it is still prone to RROD-ing often. It's not a revision, it's kind of what they did with the PS2/PS3 slim. Just because they can make it smaller, they did. Unlike the PS2/PS3 slim, MS is attempting to use the Xbox 360 slim to get more sales, rather than just to have it cheaper to make and phase out the larger, older models.

i totally agree that the slim has exactly the same specs as the original 360, except better cooling, but it didn't really make sense logically, for them to release the slim now and then in 2 years release the next generation of xbox.

If what you are saying about the management is true then the new managment may decide to release a new console to try and take the company in a new direction.

btw clevo.fr still has the 580m on their site for the p150hm. i guess nvidia asking nicely didn't translate.

I tend to disagree. One 460m is not enough for 1080p at high settings.
For 1080p screen you need 2 video cards, just to be sure, or to be future proof.

And if we could have it for free, that would be just awsome too. Perhaps in the future in a resource based economy with no currency other than the raw material itself.

Yup, prince of persia is right.
We seek that happiness, that sense of wellness with the purchase, that senese of security. But then we come here on forums such as these, and see something else popped up. And we want that too. So on so forth, and we will never be happy. The thing is, man has made a habit of wanting what he cannot have and gets bored after he has it. But like all habits it can be broken.
Best thing is buy now whatever, and be happy about it no matter what comes next.

So what the neighbourh has 470sli instead of your 460sli ? Surelly there are persons out there with 485 sli, the neighbour is looking forward to having. ANd those persons out there are definetly eying the 580m sli.
Before you consider having more, first start to consider that you were lucky enough to have the 460m sli in the first place. Be gratefull "the universe" granted you the chance of owning the 460m sli, because there are definetly a lot more ppl out there who would like to have what you have now and cannot aford it.

The point is one must learn to be happy in he's/she's current state. Because if you are happy and self content all by yourself, when you will have nothing else, you will still be the same.
Not to mention all the other grave happening in the world, that you dont see. Be gratefull you can stay in your cosy place of living, with the ability to play on 460m sli.

I for one, most likely will use, this laptop for a long time. I have never ever owned a windows pc that is so smoothly and that can game so good. And i am gratefull I have it. Its like with this laptop i took my revenge on all thoses dreadded k6-II days, when i was forced to play diablo 2 in software, and it run like .

Sure, a 580m sli is something sexy, but c'mon, do we really needed. Esspecialy considering the price. I dont' know about you but for that price, how much is it, 1500 euros ? i can eat for one year.

BMW in germany, i believe has an option throught wich a client can pay something montly or yearly, and he chooses a model of car, and every time that car is refresed and something new appears, he gets the new version.
It would be kewl if we had something similar.

BEcause, if i want to upgrade my 460m sli, once i buy new GPUs, these become useless. I cannot reuse. I cannot sell them. They become obsolete. I might as well throw them in the garbage.

Are you sure it has better cooling? I've heard that it's exactly the same thing.

Also, Microsoft wants to squeeze more out of their Kinect is why they're going at it so hard. Nintendo has the right idea I think, making their new console. But Microsoft no longer cares about a happy customer or a good fanbase. When people have issues, they take forever to fix. And besides, making a new slim isn't anything special, their parts are very cheap, $300 an Xbox is still a great profit margin for them. Anyway, enough about MS. I opened this chat, typed most of it, forgot I did, then just came back and saw it. Hehe.

the orginal 360, without the additional gpu heatsink
    [IMG]

the new slim xbox 360, which has the gpu and cpu on the same die in order to maximize cooling, due to a bigger fan with better placement.
