Wait wait wait... dat soundin like ah plan dere. Leh we talk.
*cough*
Uhh, I mean...
No, I meant what I said. Dat soundin like ah plan dere.
And yeah, a P170HM with a 3D matte screen, GTX 580M and a 2720QM... my new realistic goal for this year.

Yeah, thanks for the philosophical life lesson delivered here on NBR.
-
Fingers crossed for tomorrow's release of 580M, it can't hide foreva)))
-
Yeah it certainly does. Apperently there is a guy that makes them with batteries for about 3000, but with that budget, we could put solid state drives and liquid cooling, 3d display flourescent lights and a set of really good batteries
-
ZOMG. A few more days now guys.
-
No such thing as future proofing...wake up were in 2011....and tech with future proofing never goes together.
-
I don't know about that. I'd think buying the 990X processor will future-proof you for at least a few years. But when it comes to graphics, yeah, you can't future-proof anything because a year from now, that 580M will struggle with some new power-hungry game that will come out.

The Witcher 3!!!!
There, I just blew your mind
Mr. Mysterious -
I'll be bummed out if we don't see some 580m performance reviews within hours of the NDA expiration. Certainly, Nvidia would put a few samples in reviewers hands to give it a little additional press.
-
I'm not very optimistic on performance gains. It's going to be more expensive too (more then $1 dollar and loose change as was alluded earlier on this forum)
-
10-15% increase over the 485M
-
i got mine for only $1.50 more than the gtx 485!

But that's a whole McChicken and a half worth of money!!! D= ZOMG
Mr. Mysterious -
ya i tried to get a better price but no luck, lol
-
Where is concrete evidence for this? They are all just guesses. 10% would still be considered minimal. anything over 25 would be considered great - which wont happen.
-
From where?
-
ya i dont expect much, hopefully lower temps
-
Mr_Mysterious Like...duuuuuude
Mythlogic, apparently, but they had to take that down because of the NDA.
Mr. Mysterious -
ya i noticed it right away and ordered
-
i will post a review once my system arrives
-
clevo france still has it, but it says it delays the order +or- 45 days
-
I don`t have any concrete evidence since NDA is still going on obviously? GTX 460M did the exact same as 485M is going to do. Go from GF104 core to GF114 core which have better power management. There is only so much you can do before you make it unsuitabe for any laptop heatwise. 485M is already 100W. What do you think a 25% increase would be talking about TDP? This is Nvidia we are talking about. They are known for watt and heat
This will be exactly like 460M to 560M. Same core count, small increase in frequency, about the same TDP, and around 10-15% better performance. That is all they can do until we get to 2012 and 28nm GPUs -
right, ati/amd fans better hope gtx580m power enough to beat 6970m over 50%+.........then amd will release hd6990m against it
and if gtx580m so weak or launch too late, 6990m will just dissappear or merge into next 7000m due to 6970ms good sale they're enjoying now -
I highly doubt 580m will beat 6970m by anything close to 50%. Maybe 20% at best. 6990m will probably be similar performance.
-
In some games maybe but on average - 15-20%. Anyway, we'll know for sure quite soon
-
How soon ?

I am going to tip LulzSec to hack and DDOS your site Aikimox if you don`t give us the juicy details now.

The Lulz Boat finished its voyage yesterday, unfortunately.

Back to the GTX....I'm praying to...umm...some sentient omnipowerful entity....that the pricing is under $700 >_<
Mr. Mysterious -
im preeeetty sure its just gonna replace the 485m at the same price level
-
Mr_Mysterious Like...duuuuuude
How much was the 485M going for then?
Mr. Mysterious -
I actually was told by one of the resellers that its going to be 50 dollars more then the 485. And the 485 then will stay the same price
-

Why are you going for the GTX 580M instead of the 6790M?
The GTX 580M will be ~ $865
Then you have to buy a new PSU = ~ $925
Explanation:
Radeon 6790M costs ~$500 as standalone part.
GTX 485M (Base Price +495) costs $315 MORE than the Radeon 6790 (Base Price + $180) in 8150 configurations.
GTX 580M = GTX485M + $50
$500 + $315 + $50 = $865
+ 180W PSU
= $925 -

I see your point here. However....
If you use the 460M as a comparison point, you'll get....
6970M = 30% better
485M = 40% better
580M = 60% better.
You pick your choice
Who knows? I might end up getting the 6970M in the end. But with it being phased out, that's unlikely.

So let's say you get 25 FPS in a game on your GTX 460M right now.
If you spend $560 (6790M + PSU), you'll get 32.5 FPS in that game.
If you spend $925 (580M + PSU), you'll get 40 FPS.
After shipping and the cost of new thermal compound and installation service (as you've mentioned you didn't want to do it yourself before) you are paying nearly $1000 for a 15 FPS gain.
I'm just trying to give you some advice and perspective.
-

That really depends on the game you're talking about ES, but there's also a bit of future-proofing in there as well.
Let's face it, the prices are not going to get any lower, both within generations and across them.
Mr. Mysterious -
Good point. But is it worth running the risk of a 6970m that might fail?
Anyways we just have to wait and see for some 580 benches. -
Another option is 560M. I assume heatsink and brick are compatible as well. Should be cheapest choice and not too far off 6970M.

Before the incidences of 6970s failing, Nvidia was the one with a long history of cards failing at a much higher rate than others in the industry. Many users with the 8800/9800 series have dead cards and Nvidia was faced with lawsuits and recalls on thousands of medium range Dell, HP, etc. notebooks that had faulty GPUs as well.
My point is that any mobile card can potentially fail and Nvidia has a longer history of it. Whenever it happens, it sucks especially since most people only have 1 year parts warranty. Given the few incidences of the 6970 failure reports on this board though, I agree and I would wait for the 6990 in hopes they have identified and corrected their mistakes. -
Electric Shock Notebook Evangelist
The 560M is still 30-40% slower than a 6970M.
The 560M is basically identical in performance to the 460M. It's basically the same card with minor differences. The 560M runs at slightly higher voltage which gives it 10% higher clocks. -
..sob.. I don't have any details yet.

I know where your office is. I'll camp outside until you get some. (Actually I am more interested in the 6990M and backlit keyboard and Ivy Bridge). -

^^^^ I would not hold my breath for a 6990M and backlit keyboard in a Sager-Clevo model...at least for a while...
-
The good thing about the 6990M is that as soon as it's announced we will have it regardless of whether it's offered by Clevo or not
-

I wait for you to start manufacturing your own notebooks then.

Don't wait, help by investing a few millions to speed up the process.
