As others have stated above anyone with a NP8660 order that is pending presently for it to arrive into stock will be upgraded, at no charge, to the new NP8662 with the GTX 260M. The pricing was the exact same between the two models. :)

Buying straight from Sager is usually (but not always) not the best choice - Sager's forte is putting the systems together, not pricing, customer service or technical support. That generally seems to be borne out by the experience of some who've posted here in the past, and seems to explain why Sager generally doesn't compete on price with their own resellers.

i also noticed that you get additional warranty years when u buy from the resellers compared to the default 1 yr of warranty from sager itself.. btw thanks for the quick reply bud..

You can also get two different types of extended warranties from some resellers - the reseller's own extended warrranty, or Sager's extended warranty. If a reseller offers its own extended warranty, that tends to be less expensive than the Sager extended warranty with the same term. Of course, the flipside of that is that a repair claim under that warranty might take a little longer to be completed than one under the Sager extended warranty (at the very least, because of additional shipping time). It's all in the cost-benefit analysis and your own personal appetite for risk.

I can vouch for xoticpc's customer service. I've been bugging Justin at Xoticpc constantly with questions about the new Sager, and he's always good about replying and letting me know what he can.

I'd suggest that you start with a couple of the resellers listed on Gophn's Clevo Guide, go to their websites and price out the configuration you want on each - noting the differences where you cannot exactly configure the same thing (e.g., the warranties) - then pick the best three or four prices, call up those resellers on the phone, and discuss the configuration with them and ask questions about things like delivery, price-matching, support, and the like, to get a sense of which one you feel the most comfortable doing business with. Most of the resellers are small businesses, so getting that personality fit is a lot more important than with a giant conglomerate like _HP.

Hey guys, I decided to ask this here as I'm fairly certain I've decided on the NP8662. I have a few questions on how I should configure it.

Originally when I was shopping around for a laptop it was only for school, and I gave myself a $2000 budget. I have a decent home system with two monitors, runs all the games I want to play well. Then I saw this thing, which actually exceeds everything in my home PC if configured right, so I was thinking on maybe using it as a desktop replacement as well as carrying it to school. I'm a CS major.

    Questions:
2.9ghz Quad-core (+360): Worth it over the stock 2.4ghz duo, if nothing else to future proof it?

Graphics Card: Planning on leaving it stock, seems plenty powerful.

External Monitor Video Adapter (+169): Is this the only way to hook this thing up to another monitor? I have a nice 22" I'd like to attach it to when at home.

4gigs of ram (+45): Planning on a 64-bit in the future, so this seems like a good investment.

    500gig 5400rpm HD (+70): Will I miss the extra speed on the 7200rpm 320g?

I won't be adding OS Software as I will just install Windows XP, 7, and or Linux on it to suit my needs.

    Thanks in advance.

That's a dual core, not quad.

The 500 GB 5400 will be very similar in performance to the 320 GB 7200RPMs.

Wow, correct you are. I must have assumed it was quad considering it was underneath the Q9000, but now I see it sorts on pricing.

    Thanks.

500GB 5400RPM hard drives perform slower than 320GB 5400RPM hard drives, if I recall correctly. They bump up the number of platters used, increasing read times and so forth.

I recall reading, back when the 500GB's were the new kids on the hard drive block, that 250GB and 320GB hard drives both outperformed their big brother; 7200rpm is just icing on the cake.

actually the new generation of 5400rpm drives (320GB and up) performs as fast as the previous generation of 7200rpm drives (200GB and under).... due to the higher density which improves seek times.

of course the new generation 7200rpm drives (320GB and up) are the fastest.. excluding SSDs.

hmm, odd, i thought 7200RPM HDD will give you a better access time, boot time, and shut down time.

I myself still use 5400RPM Hitachi, my friend urge me to get the 7200RPM because he said that it bumps the speed of his laptop. Btw, he's not gamer, and the HDD he purchased was Hitachi 7K200. So we're not talking more FPS in games here, but the overall speed of the PC.

    Hi guys :)

2 weeks ago I almost click the button "order" on xoticpc.com, but smth told me "not yet" and this "smth" was right - as usual :)

Now I read almost everything (including 2 reviews here) about Sager, 8662(0), xoticpc, etc. and it looks that's all I need. But anyway there some questions:

    1. Could someone make "print screen" of "device manager" for me? I'm hardcore Linux user and I'd like to be prepared for any hardware issues. Mostly I'm interested in webcam, sound chip (should be smth like ALCxxx), BT, card reader.

    2. HDD. Temptation is strong to get more space, i.e. to order 500@5400 rather 320@7200. I've already read here and on some other site that the difference is not really huge (on applications is under 10%), but just to confirm: am I right? May be from someones' real experience it's better to take faster HDD rather bigger one?

    3. What type of HDD Sager uses? As far as I know it's Seagate. I mean the exact model (smth like "Momentus 5400.x" or even better - ST9500xxxxx)

    4. Who's the vendor for RAM? What's the timings?

I almost sure I forgot to ask smth else, but ...

    TX in advance, guys :)

I've read couple of big articles dedicated to this issue. Briefly - depends on the game (GPU or CPU intensive), screen resolution, AA, CPU & GPU "type" and frequencies & lots more. It's really depends...

The processor you NEED to get is based on what you intend to do on this laptop.

If its for gaming, then a P9600.
If its for major CAD, modelling then look at a T9800 or an extreme processor.
If its for video and sound editing, then look at a quad processor.

The processor you WANT to get is based on nothing logical but gloating rights.
In that case, go for the best, and when it's outdated, lie and say its still the best. ;)

Very little. I'd say the difference is around 10 minutes max on normal usage.

It's the GPU that really pulls the battery life from this laptop.

Guys, I would like to know your opinion about GTX 2xxM and HD48xx in games.

GTX 260M is oced 9800M GTX, how does it perform against HD4850?
I wondered what is TDP of that ati card.

GTX280 is probably better than HD4870 accorgind to notebookcheck.

9800M GT vs GTX 260m is atleast 30% performance boost right?

    Thanks for all the comparsions.

But I dont know about any comparsion between HD4850 and GTX 260M.
HD4850 gaming performance compared to GTX 260M(OCed 9800M GTX) - I dont care about 3D Mark performance.

They surely won't have and it would be more expensive to buy it from them if they did.

I'm not planning on playing GTA4. I have a Playstation 3 and for the most part I'm going to game on that. I do plan on getting Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2. I would be playing mostly RPG's MMO's and Left 4 Dead stuff like that.

Should I get the Q9000 or go for the P9600?

The 2.66 is $165 and the Quad 2.0 is $170

not much difference in price, so I was just wondering.

    Thanks

Both the games you've listed will be perfect for the P9600. The Q9000 should be able to handle them both too but neither will exclusively support quad-core chips, if at all.

Diablo and Starcraft will more than likely take advantage of the Q9000. L4D maxes out dual cores as it is, I think a quad wouldn't hurt either. Verdict, quad is not a bad idea...but the P9600 works as well and consumes nearly half the power.
