I have a friend who has suffered with that because of contact lenses got infected but Its nice to hear your just upgrading rather than having issues with the machine. That DM model is looking like my upgrade choice also.I'm undecided on the screen but I'm also favoring a bigger screen since I already have smaller 15in laptops that are usable.
I'm thinking how cool it would be if intel made hex core cpu's for mobiles but xeon chips is interesting I also posted a article showing that intel plans on releasing unlocked laptop chips also. It's will be interesting to see if they plan on type c/tb3 for the laptop ports also. I like that intel has made tb3 their own by implementing it in a usb-c format and adding with the skylake bundle especially since the former tb ports didn't really catch on much and was mostly used for egpu. Hopefully Idf will mention much more on all the new chips.

The xeon chips are an interesting move. I have seen it on desktops already.
Some of the current workstation desktops come with xeon chips.
I have to say, those xeon CPUs are much faster than the i7s. By eliminating the integrated GPU, there is more room for raw processing performance.
    http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/p...0sw7p307&model_id=precision-t1700-workstation

I have a friend who got himself a HP desktop with a xeon CPU for $750.

I think this move makes sense also in the context in which all consumer grade mobile CPUs will become soldered to the motherboard, while the xeons will always be removable.

Wow this was surprising to me ! I didn't expect to see a skylake mobile cpu laptop this fast. I'm also pleased to see skylake laptops with tb3 ports like the desktops have. Also another shocker is the first 17in 4k screens are in that, plus 64gb ram in a laptop has been confirmed !
I have worked with several xeon workstations and they do perform efficiently and I'm also interested how these will perform. The downsides to the xeon chips are they are not xtu tunable and they lack the igpu. The upsides is that even at stock you get i7 hyper threaded performance for a great price.

Hopefully it comes down a little bit to match an equivalent spec ZM, but it would still make sense since 4790k has been out a while now. But it would be nice.

So what does everyone think about the rumors about the 990m being faster than 2-980m's in SLI and 20% faster than a desktop 980? Its not MXM format and will be soldered to the MB....kinda makes me upset I paid so much to have 2-980m's in SLI.......... :(

That's contradictory as 980M SLI is about 35% faster than 980

I was referring to SDRAM ICs. None of the fabs have put money into higher density packages. Semiconductor, especially DRAM, is extremely supply-side driven out of sheer costs.

With the dominant chip out there not supporting it we will never see larger DDR3 sodimms in any quantities, however with DDR4 we will see sizes increase pretty qucikly.

Intel regularly claimed its 80+ series, and definitely it's 90 series, chipsets could support 16GiB in 1R DDR3 DIMMs. They had to back away on the 80 series, but definitely restated they would with the 90 series.

Unfortunately, 8Gb IC tech for DDR3 hasn't surfaced. Hence why the only 16GiB DIMMs are 2R, either Registered (universally supported by Registered logic), or an odd, 2R Unregistered (requires the board to understand there is an added Chip Select on-DIMM). Registered allows 4R per channel, Unregistered only 2R, hence the 32GiB limitation for Unregistered (2c x 2R).

I think that's what I said, but for actual, SIA noted reasons.

I.e., that Samsung, TSMC, etc... are refusing to go through the design cycle, deal with the yield issues and other things for 8Gb IC tech in DDR3 so we can have 16GiB in a single rank (1R), so consumers will have to go DDR4 to get 1R.

Semiconductor, especially DRAM, is extremely supply-side driven. Samsung, TSMC, etc... have decided only DDR4 will be worth the investment into 8Gb IC tech.

It's not worth the investment as the people who would invest in larger DDR3 sodimms will be moving to DDR4 sodimms anyway ;)

Consumer demand is actually secondary in high-volume, low-margin semiconductor products, such as DRAM. I.e., the actual cost to supply is the primary reason. Supply often creates demand when it comes to DRAM. Supply, not demand, also defines the price of the DIMM modules too.

SIDE NOTE: This is also how the SIA predicted tablet pricing and sales some 3+ years in advance, as well as the more recent slowdown in sales too.

Once Samsung, TSMC or another hints that they've made the jump to 8Gb IC, allowing 16GiB in a single rank (1R), all others will ramp up their efforts. But until then, they don't want to spend the money. The demand is there, for UDIMMs, but also for 32GiB 2R RDIMMs. But until the supply inertia is overcome, everyone is going to be stewing ... or settling for a Registered, 16GiB 2R module, whether DDR3 or DDR4.

I'm just hoping by 2016, we'll finally see the first 16GiB 1R modules for DDR4. Because it's clear it will never happen for DDR3, despite continued calls for one.

The largest purchasers are OEMs and the server market, they will drive it based off the demand of their customers. They will be moving to DDR4 hence that is where the demand is. If the money is there then they will make it.

Even aggregately, OEMs don't make a dent in the cost of renovating a multi-billion dollar fab. That's why most have to be run at a loss early on, especially if there are poor yields, and the ROI doesn't show up for several years. I cannot emphasize how much major fabs running high volume, low margin products are extremely supply-driven economies. And right now, the moves are just being made, and still very slowly -- i.e., samples never indicate when actual production will start.

Many OEMs have been wanting 16GiB 1R UDIMMs and 32GiB 2R RDIMMs. But no one has made that necessary move to 8Gb IC tech ... yet. And they haven't at all during the, currently, 7+ year "reign" of DDR3, despite support in the last, several years.

Hence my "hope" that we do see 16GiB 1R DDR DIMMs by mid next year, 2016.

@Samot @SierraFan07 @t456 - believe it when it's real and officially announced / launched (as I'm sure you arelady appreciate) ;-)

A lot of our customers and potential customers read nbr and I'm sure that tomorrow we will have an inbox of questions on this same topic after seeing "it" available for pre-order. So based on this, as I'm sure you guys already know, you can take take any pricing or info on products launched by Wu Haijun and then offerd for pre-order with a large truckload of salt......

My hope Clevo does not sell incomplete laptops and then a month later sell the complete version. At the very least inform the customer that the initial release is incomplete and the only significant update in mobile gaming will be released in a month.

Simply, my hope Clevo treats their customers right and realize selling a machine for $1850 knowing they will release an update only a month after is wrong and should not be tolerated within their business practice.

I'm actually excited seeing that 990m its nice to know the option for much more power is available and that the mxm b is being continued (if that 990m is real). I dont see why they would release a mobile 990m without a desktop 990 though?

No reason why they wouldnt but they have before. The GTX 85M didn't have a desktop 485, and the whole 800M series was skipped for desktop cards. I think there were a couple others they did that with too.

Edited: replaced 685 with 585, then again with 485

Desktops already have 980ti and Titan X, so they have cards higher than the original 980. And there are additional tiers on the laptop, like a 940m and 965m that aren't on desktops as well. I could see them not making a new desktop one. I suppose it would depend on how powerful a 990 would be and how it compares to 980ti and Titan X.

Well, Nvidia stated that Maxwell brought about a change to "Mobile first" philosophy, so desktop designs aren't the most important anymore.
Edit: I'm not disagreeing, just stating that we don't necessarily need a desktop equivalent anymore.

There was no 685M. Maybe you mean 680MX? That was a Mac exclusive, same thing as an underclocked 780M basically.

What Nvidia meant by "mobile first" is they're designing all their future GPU architectures beginning with Maxwell from the bottom-up instead of top-down, focusing on power efficiency and mobile-friendly designs and then scaling up as necessary for higher power laptop and desktop GPUs. Kepler already started the trend by releasing the mid-size die (GK104) first, but Maxwell cemented the philosophy shift by leading with a small chip, GM107. This is as opposed to the old way (Fermi and before) of top-down design and introducing a new architecture with the big kahuna. With the old way of doing things, Nvidia couldn't scale the architecture down efficiently into low-power devices so they used a different architecture for Tegra than they did for laptop/desktop. Nvidia has wanted to get into SoCs and mobile/living room devices for a long time. Its failure/lack of design wins with the first few Tegras prompted the strategy change and now everything is on a unified architecture, e.g. Tegra K1 (Kepler) and X1 (Maxwell).

I'm just a bit surprised they called it the 990m I think it would have been smarter to call it the Titan x-M or 980ti-M based on the earlier moves they made already this year. With the increases it seems the higher power brick options would be essential for a gpu like that and would also have to be factored into the price. Its expensive, but who ever gets this would be proofed for a while.

edit: people waiting for pascal should take note of this price since it could mean pascal won't be cheap either when that releases.

OK third times a charm, 485M :) and no 480 desktop card.

But the point is Nvidia has released models for notebooks that did not have desktop equivalents.

The names don't mean anything, half the time they're not even based on the same GPUs

Yup, 680MX was a Mac exclusive but that was only because it was a 100W+ TDP card and was only available in the iMac, so to be pedantic the 680MX was MXM non-laptop exclusive.

I seriously wouldn't put any weight on the prices that are being thrown around at the moment, they are pure speculation.

Why so hung up on the name? AMD released a 6990M and not only was it not dual-GPU but it was Barts not Cayman.

Since nothing is confirmed yet making conclusions on even the name seems a little premature.

I thought the W230Sx was the remake? Slightly larger for a much faster GPU is a trade-off most performance enthusiasts will make, esp. when it's only 11" vs. 13".

Perhaps. I personally prefer the 11" chassis but to each their own
