hmm as from the pic it is seen that gtx 980 desktop uses the same slot as mxm 3b only the cards form factor is large, maybe m18x have a shot at gtx 980 if it detects

yup yup, my thoughts exactly. the connection to the socket remains exactly the same, u just need that extra space available for the wider board and in this case also the....external. power. cord....! seen beautifully in that last pic, lower left corner of the gpu, thats SO desktop! :D

Thanks. About to buy a 9758 (Clevo 750DM-G) from Sager but would have waited if the 980 was somehow coming to a 15" laptop within the next month or two. Someday :)

Looks a little weird, to have the cable hanging randomly all across like that.
Maybe it´s just for testing purposes when they just installed the GPU.

Where is this new 14" we heard about? I keep seeing all sorts of 15.6" and 17" models on xotic and other resellers and no mention of the little guy yet! :)

Anyone see a good reason not to snag a 8658 from Xotic PC if the 980m and 15" is what I am looking for.. Going with the 6700HQ

The GTX 980 is only going to be available in the P775DM and P870DM. If it does pop up in a 15" Clevo chassis then it will be a change to the current plan!

It'd probably be quite some feat of engineering to fit the 980 and associated cooling and power into a 15" case. But it will happen someday.

Laptops aren't just getting more dense - desktops are shrinking :)

I know they like to spout that these new laptops with the 980 are the only 'oculus ready' laptops around, but I have to disagree. On my Clevo P650 before returning it, I ran elite dangerous via a DK2 at 100-140 fps on ultra everything with a gtx970m.

i would say yes. current predictions for VR SLI are around +40-50% performance boost with a second card in SLI. if you consider that the 980 is officially VR ready and about 30-35% faster than a single 980M, your performance should pan out ;)

The only potential issue is the thunderbolt connection of the displayport getting in the way.

I see that many vendors are now getting their non-desktop processor models listed for pre-order. In most cases, the 17" models only come with a 1080p screen (although it is IPS now), but there were a couple of threads on here in the last 2-3 months that talked about 17" 4k screens. That being said, I realize that a screen being manufactured somewhere certainly doesn't mean that it's in widescale availability, if available at all.

Do any of the reps here happen to know if we'll see those 4k screens in the near future on 17" models? I suppose Clevo might also wait until Pascal hits in about a half year to change that out as well. I suspect that NDAs and such might prevent reps from stating, but it can't hurt to ask. :)

Never hurts to ask, and good mention of the NDA as we have been sitting on that for the Skylake computers.
We havent heard any dates for 4k 17.3" yet though.

A good solid 1080p IPS panel will be better for most users, but as the availability of high res 17.3" panels actually comes in i'm sure they will look to offer it.

I agree Meaker, not a dealbreaker. I didn't want to experience any buyer's remorse if 4k panels were coming out in the next month. If they were, I'd consider it a bit more carefully along with weighing the difference in cost.

I always appreciate how responsive the regular reps are here - thanks very much!

The AUO 17.3" 4K will, eventually, be available, at least at XMG - Schenker. I suspect others too.
But as Meaker said, 1080p IPS is, really, good enough if not the best choice.

    I thought 1080P IPS was all I would want on a 15.6", until it saw a 4K 15.6".

Oh no don't start saying that!! I just pre-ordered the 8658 from Xotic without the 4k upgrade!
Haven't seen the IPS or the 4k.. However, I am sure the IPS with G-Sync will be enough for me.

For gaming you'll be very happy. I also do a lot of photography stuff so 4K makes a difference there. For gaming it really won't.

    Hi Hutsady,

I'm really interested in the sager 8657-S, however it does not come with IPS screen by default right? I'm just curious, for an extra $80, it says I can get a G-sync FHD IPS screen. This leaves me a bit scratching my head as wouldn't a G-sync screen be useless on a GTX 970M "Optimus" laptop? Couldn't you have offered a non Gsync IPS screen for less? Thanks.

It has a switch (MUX) between iGPU, dGPU and internal display (Only internal though, all external ports are directly connected to dGPU), but its not Optimus...its called a "gear display".

I wonder if Sager will start building and shipping out orders earlier then the ETA 10/15 on there site.. Oh man I would be so happy if I could have the P650RG a few days after the 15th.. I honestly don't expect anything on my door step until like Nov 1..

Usually Sager is pretty accurate on their ETAs most of the time. Like Hutsady said, they should start shipping out shortly after the 15th. Congrats on the new system!

If you have any services that we offer for customization that Sager doesn't offer, then it would come to us first. Or if you are shipping it to California, it will come to us first, then ship out to you. But if you don't have any extra services, or live in CA, then it will ship directly to you from Sager.

How is the UI scaling for 4k 15" laptop display with Windows 10, Photoshop CC, etc.?

I have heard previously that Adobe applications were difficult to use at this kind of resolution on a small display - have there been improvements?

Perfectly fine at 100%, 150%, 200%, except for some older non-updated windows system menus. The in-betweens are blurry.

Lightroom and Photoshop UI have a 200% scaling option (LR has more) that work fine.

    4k IPS or TN-led?
What about the SSD's. Samsung new NVMe1.1 or achi?

Clevo threads are exciting here :) seems like October is when the fun begins. Any news on when we can see some mobile skylake chips. I'm pretty set on wanting a dm however I am reluctant since I wanted to compare the mobile versions. The overclockable chip looks the most promising any idea when this will be released and priced ?

October 15th to 20th looks like when a lot of new models are starting to ship out, with either the 6700hq or 6820hk. You would want to check around on pricing as it might vary on the difference in price between the two, depending on where you buy your system.

Thank you, I do see some nice offerings by msi and clevo.

    The clevo 650re3 with *6820hk cpu option* :), 16gb ddr4, 128gb ssd, gtx970m or gtx980m, 1tb hdd.... (but no tb3 o_O)
    and the other:
    The msi GE62 Apache Pro-001 *6700hq cpu*, with tb3 :),16gb ddr4, 128gb ssd, 970m, 1tb hdd, (but no 6820hk option o_O)

Both are very tempting for me and I can imagine that these units will sell very well and will be top sellers and popular. These two are the most balanced notebooks imo offering moderate power, mobility, and pricing and I would even recommend these models for those looking for that practical balanced bga form factor. Personally though as nice as these are they fall short for me and is not enough to take my attention off the clevo DM's which I think stole the show especially the p870dm thats making headlines. For me the balanced sweetspot for the non bga laptops is the 750dm/770dm ;) cant wait to see more reactions and reviews on all the ones I mentioned.

My must buy laptop would be i7 at 4Ghz (for work - data analysis) , TB3 (for future eGPU - for Occulus ). <= 15" . There's nothing on the market atm .. so my current HP elitebook and Desktop live on see another year :/

P750DM is close but the 970M/980M is useless for me considering eGPU would be cheaper, faster and easily upgradable

i find it odd that no OEMs paired i7-6820HK with a TB3 port :/ I'd have thought there would be many more MSI GS30 like laptops this time around.

By the looks of it the p650re looks like it only has the gtx 970m with 3.0 GB of VRAM and not the 6.0 GB of VRAM, and the p650rg only has the gtx 980m with 8.0 GB of VRAM as oppose to the gtx 980m with either the 4.0 GB VRAM or the 8.0 GB VRAM?
