Yeah as I said its nice news and all but I'm dying to see some actual machines already since skylake is around the corner. Now with the new OS win x here and cpu chips on the way, its a great time for upgrading.

so what exactly would be the benefit of getting the desktop skylake cpu- 6700k, vs keeping the haswell 4790k in a laptop? the cpu benchmarks are pretty much the same, and the skylake cpu has a higher tdp....

i've seen a ton of benefit for the mobile skylake chips, like better battery life, wireless charging, more performance per watt and all that cool stuff. but when it comes to the desktop cpu inside a clevo machine, why get the skylake one?

Many people have been asking that same question for the last 3-4 generations of desktop CPUs. :) Even the TDP differences tend to be quite minor, so it tends to come down to features.

New Skylake features (like USB 3.1) are not even likely to be far enough along to be a bonus. I guess we'll know more later, but I'm not even sure there will be a significant improvement in terms of battery life - or at least not for the higher end mobile CPUs.

would battery life be lower on the 95w 6700k vs the 88w 4790k? i heard the desktop cpus already make battery life horrible.

These are both solid questions the first one why get a desktop skylake in a clevo vs the current 4790k is only a matter of if you plan on upgrading past the 4790k. The 6700k is a newer chip and even though the improvements seem minimal it will be the new flagship and over time that newer lga socket will see even more flagships over time before that socket is replaced so it comes down to having a newer chipset that will be extremely powerful and upgradeable compared to mobile chips. Having a clevo desktop capable notebook means that you will have the most powerful form of skylake in a laptop and if they release a dual gpu version aka (superman) then you will have the most powerful notebook period.

Battery life, I'm not sure any real change would occur however looking at the efficiency of the skylake chips on the desktop I'm expecting a 10% minimal increase with efficiency. Keep in mind they will also have desktop versions of skylake that are only 35w tdp so the tunable 6700k may have increased overclocking/undervolting capability. The batman skylake is not made for battery life though, its main role is being a upgradable powerful notebook so dont expect much in that field.

I would not count on the socket taking any future generations.

I never said nothing about future generations but I'm pretty sure more chips will be made in that socket. Look how many ivybridge and haswell chips chips were made for those sockets so what on earth gives you that impression ? Im confident the 6700k will get revisions on the same socket just like the other unlocked chips before it.

They may release new chips but they won't perform any better. The 4770k and 4790k only differed in package for instance, even then the clock differences was small and wiped away by de-lidding.

We still don't know how skylake will turn out even if you do have a point. Its just that you said there were not going to be more chips compatible to the socket and there is no way to know such a thing nor can we tell how they will preform. I'm still glad I waited and since I waited this long might as well wait and get the new socket board version and the latest tech.
Whoever already has a batman/zm notebook is fine will not really need to update but those of us looking to upgrade after years of older tech and have waited long enough might as well endure a bit longer and get the newest stuff.

There is no issue with waiting for a new generation (though for gamers I recommend a gpu generation and not cpu usually). It's just amending what you expect further down the line with the socket.

not much point upgrading in that socket. barely a leap going from skylake to kaby lake and what not. seems like the best benefit of getting 6700k vs 4790k is better temps and overclocking. i think the biggest benefit would just be more cores. the day that intel starts making 6-8 core consumer cpus that arent extreme editions or x99 will be a good day. 6 core mobile cpus would be nice, or a 6 core desktop cpu that won't suck a ton of power and will work better in laptops.

That's a matter of opinion and your entitled to yours but, the thing is its up to the person buying the machine and what each individuals plans are. We wont know the benefits until we get the chips and test em. Anybody that has a 4790k will probably be content for a couple of years and like I said before people like me who waited with machines older than 5 years will be treated to as intel quotes "the biggest leap in ten years" which is the skylake. Personally if I had a batman or even the computer you have in your signature I would be content and the most I would do is upgrade the gpu maybe......that's an example of how opinions vary since others may differ and want to upgrade to a new pc all together after a few years.

To those of us who have not upgraded in years its a nice feeling having the option for getting a new socket that will be relevant for at least two years or maybe even more. If your impatient or need a pc right away don't let me stop ya kid but in a month or two the market will be getting rid of the old and in with the new right in time for the new year too. The experts know what I'm talking about there's certain times that are "right times" and when a new Os is introduced (such as windows X) with new cpu's (skylake/kabylake) and new gpu's then that my forum readers is..... the "right time" and many people thank me for my advice. Of course all glory goes to the Lord in case I have the urge to boast. Anyway, I waited quite a bit and now I shall have a choice of intel's quoted "flagship of the decade" LORD willing.

I am not sure if waiting for skylake for clevo laptops is even viable now for me. I need a laptop before this late September for college. I was hoping for something like a P650SE with Intel Skylake, but considering that there hasn't been any news about mobile CPUs for Skylake, do you guys think I should just go ahead with Haswell? I am really taking the risk of waiting now...

Intel will of course big up skylake, especially after broadwell. It will be nice but mostly more of the same that we have had over the last several years.

The right time revolves around a chassis design or a graphics generation, the CPU never really makes that big a difference, a solid i7 of any generation will last for years.

Wait a month its not even August yet kid. If time is running short and you need a machine get one then but until that time you got options. If you needed one now you would have probably bought something already but since you have till mid Sept what's a little more waiting going to do that you feel its a risk?

Sorry but I'm a bit disappointed in what you replied here. You must realize that chassis redesigns are based on having new motherboard sockets with matching cpu's and without that there is no redesign so what you said doesn't sit well unless all you care about is looks. Plus, windows 10 was a big deal too and a new OS (that people actually like with positive views being compared to windows xp and 7) is an important piece that goes with what I said. And as far as your gpu generation goes, Maxwell was the big generation gpu already (a year after ps4/xbox1 which will be around for years). I know someone is going to jump in and mention Pascal but we have to wait to see how pascal even stacks up against the 980m or next maxwell refresh first other wise your helping nvidia hype their own stuff. Nvidia will hype it just like you said intel does when that time comes so really its not so different and when its all said and done Pascal too will be replaced. The "right time" is when all three of the things I mentioned fall in place but here you tried to downplay what I said and I guess that's what let me down with ur comment I do agree with some other things you said in the past though.

Ps: if your love is gpu's then desktop is the real way to go since all notebook gpus are still playing catch up to the far superior desktop gpu. I'm waiting for the day a desktop gpu will be small enough to fit in a laptop like what the zm does with desktop chips. Ive said enough .....lol My position is great and I'm very relaxed because I'm waiting for what I want and its a beautiful thing not being in a rush.... I did not get got !

There are a lot of changes in a chassis redesign regardless of the generation. You have changes in weight, materials, cooling design, storage options, screen size, layout etc. It can dictate who the machine will work for and who it will not. Yes it makes sense for the manufacturers to release this at the same time as a new design (why design it twice when half of that is less than a cycle long) but you do get CPU generations without a chassis change.

What will skylake bring? Faster USB ports (great but nothing will use it for a while), faster PCI express storage (great but again most people wont notice the difference) and a mildly faster CPU. All these things are fine and great but they do not obsolete the current models in any real fashion, USB3 is perfectly fast enough for external storage (and will be for some time), current PCI express storage can get up to 1.7GB/sec (again fine for years to come) and the current I7 does not bottleneck any single GPU machine for certain and the 48xx series will last quite a while for dual card configs too.

Also my love of GPUs is on both desktop and mobile (the two are linked so trying to separate them is pointless) the 980M is an excellent example of the strides forward being taken, 50-60% increases in gaming performance excite me (and the new generation will be this sort of leap, feel free to quote me later) far more than 2-10% (far more often closer to the 2%).

Am I saying you should not wait? No, go ahead, it's your money and your choice, but if someone were to get a system now, they did not rush in, their system will not be suddenly obsolete with skylake.

For me personally, the i7s in notebooks currently wont last for generations. right now, the mobile i7s can take a while to render hd videos. people are jumping on the 4k bandwagon already. mobile phones shooting 4k, 4k youtube videos, 4k tvs getting cheaper, 4k dslr and handy cams keep coming out and so on. right now even with my 4810mw overclocked, rendering a 3-5 minute 1080p video can take upwards to 30 minutes. even with my gpu helping to accelerate effects. going up to 4k will only add time to that. i know i could get a crazy 6 core 4,000 dollar eurocom mega dtr, but that thing is just too big and too expensive for me. the gap between mobile cpus and desktop cpus is much closer than the gpu gap. the best thing would be for me to get a desktop with more cores, but i cant. i just wish intel would make 6 core mobile cpus. they have the technology

Skylake will help yes but is not going to be earth shatteringly faster either, if it was taking ages with haswell it will take a bit less time with skylake. Worth waiting for perhaps in that instance, but that goes for any special case sure.

I don't think anyone is saying Haswell is obsolete in terms of performance but the fact remains better chips are on the way and no more lga1150 will be made. As far as mobile Skylake laptop cpu's goes, it will also be improved offering better igpu and more efficiency to help with the battery savings and such not to mention other improvements as its desktop version. Broadwell already replaced most mobile ivybridge and haswell chips and skylake is simply going to replace both of them for a while regardless of who feels what way about it.

As far as gpu is concerned, Maxwell was the big leap for gpu's but not every gpu generation will have such vast increases like we saw in the 900m's. Maxwell was the "big one" (the exception) and maybe pascal will be another big one when that finally becomes a reality but who knows yet? The cpu and gpu work together along with the other parts and even the OS. And this happens to be a time where we have options of getting machines with: new windows X, plus a new cpu/socket board, and new gpu's and with all that it seems like the right time to me.

Clevo ... you reading this out there ....look I'm not messing around here I made this thread and all these people are reading it because we are interested in your products and we want to see some nice offerings taking advantage of the latest tech headed our way so please do the right thing... don't let us down.

I wish they'd utilize the back of the laptop more, at least for smaller things aside from power. I liked when USB ports were in the back so I could put my Wireless receiver items, like G930 or mouse receivers, and not have it obstruct the sides of the laptop.

Guys, just chill. I am pretty sure Clevo already has had its prototypes done by now, so whatever wishes we have for the new models we won't see this year. Probably next year.

I for one wanted that UHD 17 inch screen and I got it with 100 colour gamut ... so I am happy.

Just that the specs were decided a while ago and so it's too late for any wishes to influence the specs of any near-future upcomming models.

Whats with all the secrecy ? ...I mean I'm sure were all deserving of the truth at least I would hope so. How about telling us what from the wishlist will be happening even if you can't give us a date for them which I understand unless you happen to be a designer or company rep for clevo and intel ect... Is it all just for screens or what lol?

If you notice in my title I included 2016 since I knew it was not possible for everything to drop this year. I am not buying anything or even looking forward to anything anymore nothing impresses me. All for Gsync and a bunch of 4k screens..? I'm not impressed with anything then.

To the people reading up and following this thread or even my posts ...Don't buy anything yet, dont feel you have to get something, dont feel as though you cant wait for so and so to drop...wait for when you see something you really want or even better wait until you need it. Before you buy anything wait until skylake hits and give it some time until all three of the things I mentioned are available and tested. New OS, new cpu, and new gpu. We have the new OS but we still have to wait for the new cpu and then a new gpu. I am waiting until all these things are released. Dont hurry cause I'm not and I only give advice that I have done or I do.

Waiting for skylake and this winter but If I see nothing by then I will take a even longer break from notebooks and invest in a nice upgradable desktop until I see better notebooks that suit me.

NDA can mean a few things but I guess this person is referring to the non disclosure act well if that's the case who's asking for total disclosure lol ? Thats absurd you would have to sign a NDA in the first place and no way is that apart of a forum or even the vast majority of vendors lol.....Is this how some people justify getting the truth vs getting a run around? I think we still have to wait I think not many people know whats really going to happen, and I also think there guesses are as good as mine.

@MichaelKnight4Christ - yes, @octiceps means Non Disclosure Agreement. Every system integrator worth their salt operates under an umbrella of NDAs. It means that we can't give details, directly discuss, give dates, market or sell before specific dates, a whole wealth of information.

If someone askes about the Skylake launch at Gamescom then I can reply to that, as it's public information. But can I say when new models will be available, what their specifications will be, what they will be called etc etc etc - no, I would be in breach of multiple NDAs. I would loose my job and the company would get into a lot of trouble.

I'd kill for a laptop like that. my workloads (database) are cpu dependent but i highly doubt thats going to happen until AMD gets bought by Samsung or microsoft as rumored

yup. video editing is mostly cpu dependent. all the i7s in mobile are around the same performance, generation after generation. no giant leaps. it's like intel doesnt care about mobile power uses. even an overclocked 4940mx doesnt impress me for the work id like to do

I was really hoping for hex core cpu's I see them as the next true upgrade from quad core and I was hoping skylake would have had some efficient 6core cpu's by now. For hardcore video editing a 6 or 8 core would be best there's no denying that. Right now the haswell E is the rendering and editing king but the closest you will get in a laptop would be the 4790k zm model or the ddr4 6700k desktop processor (the ZM successor) thats yet to be revealed. Even if A mobile 6 core cpu was available a unlocked desktop quad core such as the 4790k in the zm would still probably trump it.

Intel so far have liked to keep more than 4 cores to their higher end platforms. There has been no competition to push them to move faster on that front.

never mind mobile, I have 4790 desktop, even simple sorting operation (median calcs) in Excel / PowerBI maxes out the cpu.
Now that skylake is a dud, i'm seriously considering X99 and 5820K

Waited this long so expecting at least some kind of news within the next couple of months, if they announce a new 990m and some skylake refreshes I think ill just jump on that. Hoping for something for late summer or fall but if we come across some good news on the things some of us wished for then I would actually just hold out until late fall or winter if needs be.

Here is the latest on skylake 6700k:

from what I have read and heard, the things coming out this year won't be something so great you should be waiting for it..........there is always always something new or next so I say buy now...

Agreed completely. If you wait for new things because they are better, you'll always be waiting and never actually end up getting anything.

Well, Skylake officially launched today (just read the review up on Anand and looks pretty good) so hopefully we'll see it soon, too!

For people who have not upgraded in 4+ years or those who want cutting edge waiting for the latest notebooks yet to be released in 2015-2016 will be a great upgrade. It wont be that much better than a current notebook you might think, however it will offer some advances that will be the new standard for the next 2-3 years. I think with all the trouble of the 14nm launches including the delays the same is to be expected with cannonlake and the new lga socket skylake is using may be around longer than people expect and will also support kabylake. For anyone who is future proofing like myself there is more to it than owning the 6700k, its about having the latest most cutting edge design that will span a long life of potential usage while also being the more efficient.

I recommend lots of people viewing this thread to wait it out until certain things are established. Right now we have the brand new win x released that will allow some cool things with dx12 in the near future and the OS itself will be supported for the next 10 years. The next thing we will have is the skylake/kabylake sockets for desktops and new skylake mobile chips on the way soon. Eventually, new graphics will also hit the market and frankly we don't know how much of a leap in performance over the current 980m king of mobile cards on the market, but its a safe bet it will when its all said and done, offer improvements and better performance to the gpu area.

When someone upgrades all 3 of these things they are making the purest update a pc user can do. The 3 components I just mentioned all combine to make a a very substantial upgrade that is the purest start of a new upgrade cycle that can be done. I can understand why some of you are not into the skylake but this thread is about the wishes or potential of things we want to see for 2015 to 2016. For me personally, the next upgrade will be like upgrading a iphone 3g to a iphone 6 but for others its more like upgrading a iphone 4s or 5s to a iphone 6.

    Wishing to see:
-New pxxxse/sg models with new OS, screen options, quadcore i7 skylake, win X, and a new gpu, tb port

-New ZM desktop notebook with skylake, new OS, screen options, and new gpu, tb port.

-New hybrid clevo that will have a mobile skylake i7 combined with a mxm new gpu, tb port, screen, and OS. (like a mix of the se/sg models and the zm models) to make a machine lighter and more efficient and battery saving like the se/sg but capable of upgrading to the best high ram mxm gpu for power like the zm. The cpu would unfortunately be soldered but at least the gpu and ram would be upgradable.

I just want 16GiB 1R UDIMMs so I can get 64GiB in dual channel.

But I suspect that I'll likely need to go with a newer, higher end, more costly 3-4 channel chipset/BGA to get 48-64GiB with 16GiB 2R UDIMMs or RDIMMs, much like happened with X79 for DDR3.

The 16GiB 1R tech, plus native NVMe booting M.2, is what's been holding me back from moving from SandyBridge/IvyBridge generation DDR3/mSATA. I want lots of VMs and vastly improved queuing/commanding for reduced latency which comes with NVMe (not just the throughput of PCIe M.2).
