I hope that Sager keeps reading this thread.

Just to recap for Sager, let us know how is it going. Having it working is something, but getting it ready for the masses is another thing.

We know that on 150 it works pretty much straightforward, while the challenge is on the 170.

Also please let us know if Sager plans a way to sell kits directly or thru a reseller because there will be no point otherwise.

    thank you.

Does P170HM's owner Have a mean to know if their model could run the 7970M?
With the serial number? The date of purchase? How differenciate all the P170HM models?

As far as i know there is a AMD version and a NVIDIA version of the Clevo P170HM :)

it might not work with the NVIDIA edition! ;)

Seems that a latter revision actually made the laptop universal.
The two skus were made upon laptop launch, or in the first months.
But since the HM series is less than 1,5 years old, i guess only the very latest ones are "universal".

Yes, hopefully, as it seems right now the current EM series is "universal" indeed... lets hope it'll stay that way when next-gen GPU arrive.. :D

Hey, I respect what you are doing Kingpinzero. I signed myself, my mom, and my dad up...hehe. But I stumbled on this post because I' thinking of getting the np8150 as a barebone with the 95% gamut screen, and im wanting to switch from my g73. Im going to do the np8150 if it is upgradeable to the 7970, I read on here that it is now? but now they are working on making the np8170 upgradeable? (I'm sorry if I'm wrong)

You'll buy the NP8150 (from eBay or someone you know)? Why don't you just buy the NP9150 w/ the 7970M instead?

I would be getting the np8150 with no ram, hdd, gpu, cpu, but with the case, mobo, and 95% gamut screen, for 400$, that is why I would do that, also, I am making payments on all the parts (buying from friends) so it wouldn't been 1500$ up front for the np9150 which I would love.

    Asha,
First thank you a lot for all your support in our cause!
At the moment the only solid info we have is the screenshots that Sager posted a while back: the 7970m seems to work straight without mods on the p150 but they're finalizing the drivers and other things before officially announce the upgrade feasibility.
On the other hand the challenge is on the p170 because there's some problem related to Enduro technology that mux together iGPU and dGPU.
Enduro is AMD Optimus and seems that the card keep checking for the iGP even if those laptops we own dont support it.
So far Sager is tweaking either the vbios or sbios to disable the igpu controls to get it working.
My advice is this: wait a bit if you can. We don't have a final confirmation of this as yet, but we know they're working on it.
Probably it's taking time because the second batch of Clevo hd7970m isn't widely available plus they have a lot of orders to sort out.

If you can wait a bit you will save some headache.
Also 400$ for the barebone is good I think; even if this turns out to be not possible you can still go for either 675m/580m/485m or 6970/6990m cards that are powerful enough for some gaming, althought were facing a performance wall due to technology being old in some games (Witcher 2, BF3).
All those games can be played comfortable with tweaked settings, just don't expect to run them maxed out.

It's up to you really, but I say wait a bit. If your budget, however, isn't enough to get a new laptop then you may want to get it and hope that everything gets sorted in this month.

Hope it helps and thanks again!

Go for it guys, I appreciate all your hard efforts.

A laptop being unsupported after a year of its release is unheard of....

Definitely we're on to something here, hope this makes a change.

Thank you kingpin, I think I am going to hold off, and try and get the np9150, I need this laptop to be future proof for about 2-4 years...I'm selling my g73jh now, and I think I am going to just keep the money, and buy a np9150...depends how much cash I get....ect. I will keep getting people to sign the petition, but if they do make the np8150 upgradeable, will the next generations of 8xxx ati cards work? or is that still being decided?

Great news that Sager finally solved the puzzle HOWEVER:

What about the rest of us? that already have the 7970M lying on the table...

Sager can you write a step by step guide to make the Radeon 7970M work in a Clevo P150HM and a Clevo P170HM and upload the new BIOS and VBIOS versions here?

I live in Europe, so i cant buy a upgrade kit... :) and i already have the card...

So i actually just need the new vbios and bios or whatever you have :D and a few words how to do it myself :p

I have the NP8170/Clevo P170HM with the Hannstar Panel, which is supported.

Does that mean that 7970m on np8170 can run with different than LG and Hannstar displays, such as AUO?

I just hope that Sager will help all of us :) not just the ones that swing the MasterCard :p

The rest of us who cant just ship our laptop over the ocean... well, i just hope we can get help too...

So the ones who buy the upgrade kit from Sager will have a guarantee, and the rest of us have the entire risk on our side :) which is fine...

Not saying though that i wont pay money for their help :p I have just really been looking forward to a hotfix for my P170HM/NP8170 since the very beginning of this topic on this thread and the mainthread in the P170HM section...

I just hope that Sager will be able to put all their info here on NBR! and sell the upgrade kits to the ones who isnt able to get the Radeon 7970M card themselves!

I guess they can :) all europeans should just be prepared for a very big tax hammer hitting on you :p

Thats why i was hoping all along that Sager would just put out all the info needed to do it ourselves on here on NBR and profit from all the americans wanting the Upgrade Kit cause they dont have the card themselves, while us europeans we can probably get the 7970M card from our local dealer in our respective countries, im from Denmark and i just got the 7970M card from a Clevo retailer here in Denmark.

But the Vbios and Bios stuff, they should just put out here :)
The ones who really does need Sagers help on getting the kit/card will also do that i think :)

Or they could make a buying option for the help without the card <-- that would work for me too, i dont mind paying money for information about how to make it work in my Clevo P170HM/Hannstar edition... since Sager actually spent manhours into solving this...

I just hope Sager thinks about us from Europe aswell! thats all... :)

I think Sager will be the only ones, and the retailers linked directly to them...

Im just affraid that it wont be all who will have this opportunity even though the problem is solved... cause only a few ppl sits on the solution!

Me for example, i have the old P170HM and i also have the card as a sparepart, what should i do now? :(

If it works the i could probably get a card locally from Multicom, with ordering from Sager as backup.

Use HWinfo or other monitoring programs to read the monitor panel ID.

Or you can simply open the device manager and see what's listed in device manager.

Anybody on here wanting to sell their gpu from when they upgrade to the 7970, I don't know if it is against the forums rules to offer a price but I would offer 300$ (I know its cheap) Glad I was around the last couple of days to watch this happen.

I hope the EM's can ugprade next year. I'll upgrade the 7970m to 8970/8990m so that I can plow through some Unreal Engine 4 games. 7970m is probably already more powerful than the next gen consoles will be. But to run UE4 on high/ultra it will probably take next years mobile GPU's

Excellent work guys and Thank you Sager for another update on this.

I guess my situation is unique as I have an AU Optronics V5 17.3 matte display. Can I use the 7970m card or for that matter the 680m when it comes out?

    Curious.

Thanks, I appreciate it a lot.
I hope other guys do as well, as I said a few times when I stared this I was without hopes. Then I tried to get others users contribute to make our cause stronger.
Probably this wasn't needed at all, like someone says, but I do believe that it helped moving waters.
    Whatever it doesnt matter anymore.
I may be the one who started the war; you guys are the ones who won it. :)

Thanks, its because of you and other peoples that we reached the conclusion of this long fight.

Granted Sager didnt said that the petition actually made them "move", althought i would appreciate if they say something about it, either positive or negative.

Anyway im going to close the petition and put this to rest. I hope everyone can get their upgrade kit and be happy for some years to come :)

    Thanks to all!

EDIT: ok its closed now. Glad to have helped the community, and again, thanks to all supporters. Dont forget that also Alienware and other brands users helped us alot as well. We're gamers, we need to tag together to reach our dream. Thanks a billion of times to all who contributed.
