Tracking details!! Tuesday delivery YAY!!
This weekend can't pass quickly enough![]()

Anyone with a review of the Edge already??
-
there are many mini-reviews of the Clevo M860TU (aka. Sager NP8660, Kobalt Nexus, PCMW Edge, etc...) floating around here.
look into the M860TU owners thread as well. -
Got my Fedex tracking details yesterday. Looks like they shipped it two-day instead of the promised overnight. Nonetheless, I should have it by Wednesday and am very excited!
-
Surprisingly, my laptop arrived this morning even though the fedex.com tracking said tomorrow..odd. I'm quite giddy.
I've unboxed it, and man is it pur-tay.
Turned it on, and it looks like they loaded windows - that'll be the first thing to go
So far, it's looking really nice (clean, good layout, *light* especially for it's power and no dead pixels, woot)
-
What OS are you planning to load up on it? Linux? -
Ubuntu, FTW
-
I take it you can dual boot Ubuntu and XP / Vista?
-
lol - mine is coming tomorrow. they attempted delivery twice already last week
-
*actually*...I'm a tad distressed now. I tried with several different cd's and dvd's of both Ubuntu Hardy 64 (normal and alternate install) as well as Ubuntu Ultimate Edition (which is what I normally run) and they all either lock up or reboot right after the kernel starts loading.
I just got home and will work on it for, likely, the remainder of the evening. If I get it working, I'll let you know what I did (or if anyone knows, please tell me).
I plan to dual-boot Ubuntu/XP, but not Vista...sorry, can't stand it
-
OMG! The Edge arrived
Core2 Duo X9100 / 9800M GT / 4096MB DDR3 / 15.4" HD WUXGA 1920 x1200 etc. etc.
OMG!!
Am I ever -
I wonder if anyone on the forums took the Quad processors. -
How does it feel?
X9100 + DDR3 1333mhz! Man we honestly have to see your benchmark scores! -
Oh nice grats hehe, benchmarks please when you have time
-
I have the same one...and it is FAST
-
Update:
I've managed to get Ubuntu Ultimate Edition loaded by disabling legacy usb in the bios and passing acpi=off in the kernel boot parameter.
Been trying in vain the last few hours to get the wireless working. There doesn't appear to be any support yet for the new Intel 5300 cards.
I'm compiling a new Kernel now for 2.4.26 which supposedly has support. Wish me luck!
P.S. This laptop is BLAZING fast. It is all that I expected...so far there are only two minor annoyances:
1. The power cord unplugs too easily - in linux, with acpi=off there's no battery monitor (yet) so I have to watch it closely to make sure it doesn't slip out.
2. I hate that stupid frickin windows key, it keeps getting in the way
-
-
No Doubt about it, Fast it is
So far it's all I've ever wanted in a notebook and some (that's also a huge understatement)... Benches asap
PCmicroworks really went over board on customer service, just when I was beginning to have doubts! They upgraded almost all the components for free partly because of the wait, and partly because some components I ordered are no longer available in the final product! So they upgraded everything!! OMG I'm so
I'm just too happy right now to even mention this... but my power plug has fallen out also! Maybe it'll be ok since pushing the plug in further lol
I'm not sure my girlfriend shares the same enthusiasm for this awesome machine -
-
Happy for you guys!
Now... Let's see those benchmarks... stop running around like crazy!
Get to work........ please!?
Congrats all -
I forgot to mention this in my post when I picked up my laptop after having the screen replaced. But as I was peeking into one of the open Edges laying on the table in their lab, the RAM had a 1066 mhz sticker on it, I haven't opened up mine yet to confirm but just thought I would mention it.
-
Actually it's 10666 YAY!!!
-
Still busy with installing games and configuring lol Benches asap..

I said PC3 10666
And here's a link for you,

Cool, so you have 1333 Mhz RAM ?
-
For some reason, I am unable to use the message items above the text box. Such as bold, or the image tag or the change colour tag. Anyone have any idea why this is?
Using Firefox here. -

2. Does your memory look like the pictures to which you linked?
3. Can you explain how a laptop chipset that only supports 1066MHz SODIMM memory can run 1333MHz DIMM memory at 1333MHz (or how you can fit a 240 pin DIMM into a laptop 204 pin SODIMM slot?) -

Here is a better link - http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/memory/ocz_pc3_10666_ddr3_sodimm
Now, if you can only show us a screenshot using any utility you like showing that the memory is actually running at 1333MHz. -

Paladin44...you know nothing...... -
just wanted to point it out....dooh... -

The question still remains how an Intel PM45 chipset can support any memory greater than DDR3/1066 since its FSB is only 1066MHz. See: http://www.intel.com/products/notebook/chipsets/pm45/pm45-overview.htm " -
hm..I did not mean to start an argument. I just thought I would mention what I saw while there. I did not pay attention much but originally I thought 1066 meant DDR3 1066mhz, hence why I even brought up there subject because I thought PCMW was just posting 1333mhz as a marketing gimmick. But if that really translate to DDR3 1333mhz then good I guess, doesn't matter to me either way, both are good enough
-
I guess that a screen showing that the memory is running at 1333MHz would help clear things out.
And let's all chill... this is not a battle for world supremacy.
The point is, PCMW is using components that were not certified by Clevo. Whether that is a good or bad thing, only time will tell. For now, it's certainly a good thing for Edge's users. BUT... if you have 1333MHz memory running at 1066MHz... then it is all a gimmik, really! -
For sure They do run at 1333Mhz
I have pic's posting shortly, just hang on a couple more hours got a few benches to post
-
I'd love to see this one...
-
BTW RAM and CPU FSB do not have to match to get optimal performance....dooh.. -
Ok the Edge arrived! These bench results taken mostly at defaults with small exceptions, like some windows tweaking... Sorry it took so long, just could not stop gaming !!
3Dmark06 : 9990
PCmark05 : 7790
3Dmark Vantage : 4108 (Performance)
wPrime : 32m / 25.6sec
SuperPI : 1M / 15.7sec
HDD Tach
UT2004 : 95FPS
UT3 : 53.82 FPS @ 1920x1200
UT3 Screenie with temps!
DDR3 667 x2 = 1333Mhz
Actual Memory BUS frequency taken from 3Dmark Vantage info and also included SPD data from CPU-Z..
So far none of our tools that would normally indicate the memory operating speed supports this chipset CPU-z, Everest, etc. etc.
For Example..
Meanwhile the jury is still not entirely convinced, so more later....
Note I have HWmoitor but RealTemp used in these shots are more accurate for the latest batch of Intel Dual Cores
Moved to this thread..

The EDGE totally destroys the np8660. But at what cost? What's the heat like man? Use HWMonitor and let's see.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -

Deathwinger was the one who linked to the desktop DIMM...not me...that is what I was correcting in my post.
As for trying to run 1333MHz memory in a 1066 system, of course the RAM and CPU FSB do not have to match...but we are not talking about that here. We are saying that the PM45 CHIPSET only supports a FSB of 1066, so RAM cannot actually operate any higher than the FSB of the chipset. The RAM can only talk to the Chipset or the CPU at a speed no greater than their highest speed. So there is no benefit to using 1333 RAM in a 1066 system. -
Check out the 3Dmark06 screen shot just added as I used HWmonitor in it but Realtemp in most others which did record temps more accurately (calibration of the tjmax in these new Intel chips) but for some screen shots I had great difficulty maintaining the CPU and GPU clocks while pressing the "PrintScreen" lol The clocks were immediately lowered when not needed, so aggressively I had to look in the logs to see what happened! Which is why the clocks in the screen short are not consistent with each other.
Overall cpu temps ranged from 30 to 60 although the Edge did begin pumping large quantities of hot air out of the rear vents after many hours of gaming! -
Nobody cares about trying to invalidate or discredit PCMW here. Save that for the sticky.
Further - there is a marginal benefit to using 1333 ram in future applications - it has been duly noted many times.
Again - NOBODY CARES. -
it's like talking to a wall...
/sigh -
Very impressive...
The laptop... because all this bul***t talk about PCMW vs the world is really tiring. We want to see reviews, benchmarks, etc... to help each other out.
PCMW decided to go against Clevo's recommendations and it delivered a quite decent product. Seeing that the Edge is exactly the same as the NP8660 from other resellers, that gives everyone hope of one day being able to upgrade the laptops ourselves. -
This is by no way a much of a review but I have posted some pics and a bench in that thread. One noticeable difference between the laptop from sager vs. pcmw is that there is no branding on the lid from PCMW. We just have a nice shiny glossy black finish up there. Looks pretty sweet
I will do a more thorough review this weekend (hopefully) -
We are all waiting for those reviews to start popping up.
And ... where's the official reviews??? -
Lord help the souls of the np8660
-
Now... that's just silly.
Listen, can we all stop this childish pointless discussion?
"Mine is bigger than yours!" kind of discussions, really do not lead us anywhere. In the end, they are all M860TU laptops and we should all be happy that the M860TU can handle the big guns. It gives us all lots of hopes and prospects for the future.
Can we be a bit more... let's say... constructive? (not to say... mature)
Can we be on the same side and not fighting for some kind of... ahhh... weird cause?
That would be sooooo good! -
We've all got our laptops. There is no need for the sticky. Those who ordered from them received laptops from them. The warning that this sticky was put in to effect to warn of - has been quelled.
Basically it is discrimination. A - we are better than you argument- BECAUSE: "your vendor sucks" (to sum it up)
I feel pretty discriminated against and i'm sure other Edge buyers feel the same way. Constantly attacked by the status quo and members for purchasing from this company and what? In the end we get the laptops and Vendors are still attacking us (based on PCMW memory selection - there are more)
Edge buyers - we need not defend our purchases any longer - our purchases speak for themselves. To OTHERS - please end the discrimination.
