It would be great if you can just swap out but really it comes down to MC and there warranty process. I know for many transactions you have to physically go into one of the stores which is fine if you are near one.
If they allow you to ship to them it is going to probably take a couple weeks anyway not to mention shipping costs. If things go wrong and they won't cover it will you still be able to return for refund since return window will probably be gone.
Hope it works out for you let us know how it turns out

Any practical way to fix a minor nick/divot on the 1510, or am I looking at replacing the whole panel? Is the 1510 upgradeable to anything better than the stock panel?

Download Hardware Info "hwinfo" will give you the panel information to search and match for upgrade. It is pretty standard from what I have gathered, lots of panels on Amazon and eBay.
The panel looks easy to access since the front bezel just snaps in

It depends on what panel you shipped with. Speak to your reseller.

Well, I cracked her open and cleaned up the chips and heatsinks of stock thermal paste, then put on some Kryonaut. I used @Meaker@Sager 's description to apply. So far, a half an hour into a session of PUBG and my temps have worsened slightly. I'd keep it under 75C but now I'm hitting 78-80C on GPU.

Not sure what's up, but I'll pull everything and check on the spread after awhile. I was seriously hoping to see a decrease of 10C...

I have never used Kryonaut but if it is anything like Arctic Silver it takes some time to cure.
So maybe give it a few days cycling .
My 1070 GPU stays generally stays under 80c does not hit throttle temps which is just under 90c, that would concern me since the thermal limit is 90c.
The temp your CPU hits also directly effects GPU temp since the the sinks are connected with a heat tube so keep an eye on CPU temps as well.

You can put all the best paste you want but the heat sinks working at maximum fan power are only capable of getting rid of so much heat.
The only way to make the chips cool quicker and more efficiently is to have a bigger heat sink, something not really doable on a compact laptop.

There are coolers you can use some are different then a regular cooling pad which is what I use one with 4 fans, it does help keep the system cooler overall when gaming

Yeah, I've got the 4 fan Tree New Bee one from Amazon. Ironically, it didn't change much in the way of temps either. Maybe 2C.

CPU temps are running in the 70's now as well.

The package temps are directly related to the efficiency of the heat sink. Coolers will help keep the system running cooler overall the motherboard memory drives keyboard etc. so a 2c drop is not to bad.
As the ambient temp climbs will probably be even more noticeable

Someone posted here about a cooler that works a bit different since you put it in front of the outer vents I guess it is a cage type fan. Anyway supposedly it can increase the airflow over the sink and give a significant temp drop

Is the powerspec capable of outputting to a 144hz 2560 x 1080 display at the full 144hz? Sorry if this has been asked already, I've searched around and did not find the answer. Admittedly, I have not read the full 86 pages on this thread .

I've just been reading about many gaming laptops not having a display output that supports a high refresh rate . Want to make sure that's not the case with this one before I buy one .

    I have the 1050.
Maximum Resolution and refresh rate for the 1070 is 7680x4320 @60Hz. It also has 4 outputs one internal DP to the screen two mini display port and and hdmi.
I run it through a 50" 4k tv all the time at 60hz and at 1080 at 120hz (it's max) along with having the screen on. So yeah it will handle any monitor you throw at it just like any 1070 card

I get that the 1070 can handle the display, it's a port limitation in some laptops where the hdmi/display port don't support external monitors at their full resolution or hz. Just wanted confirmation that the hdmi/display ports on the 1510/1710 support an external 2560x1080 144hz display .

Well, the HDMI supports 2.0 output, and my mDP port is supporting 4K@60 10bit, so it should very well handle the bandwidth for ultrawide 1080p@144Hz.

I have found that laptop cooling pads with fans only work well if there are vents on the bottom of the laptop for the air to travel through. My 1510 does not have very much in the way of vents on the bottom, so I modded the case and created my own with my dremel. The only vents are located where the fans are pulling air from, and you definitely don't want the cooling pad fans blowing into your case fans. That will hinder the performance of the case fans. I did this before on my Toshiba Qosmio which was also notorious for poor cooling.

On the 1510, I basically tried to copy the patterns that was already there and extended it outwards to the sides of the laptop, so there is an opening directly under the heatsinks. This way, the fan blows air directly onto it. This worked really well for me on both of the previously mentioned laptops.

If you look in the pic, you can see the heatsink to the CPU underneath the set of vents on the left.

What kind of temp drop did you note after doing all that?
It's true a cooling pad would work better with more ventilation but I still find it helps cool the system down overall and as long as I am not thermal throttling I am okay with the temps at this point.
Both gpu and cpu stay under 80c for the most part at an ambient of 21c.
I like to mod as well but I am not certain how it would effect the warranty also overheating issues are covered by it.
That is also why I will not repaste, not to mention I don't think it would really help.
If it fries I don't want any issues getting a replacement

Hey guys - I currently have an omen x 17, within the 30 day return window, with a 7820hk and 1080. I’ve been in the market for some time now, been through an Alienware 17r4 and tinkered with some msi ge73vrs and even gs variants. I saw this post and decided to hit up the local micro center and to my surprise they had these on display in some dark corner behind the Razer pro. It all checked out in person and decided to bring it home and give it a proper testing to see how it stacks up to the omen x.

No surprise the omen x has a much better keyboard (by a lot!) and it feels more premium (the 1710 holds its own quite well in that regard though). Ran it through the usual tests and this is what I found.

    Pros:
    - brighter screen
    - bang for the buck is insane!!
-pretty damn sturdy and premium feeling for what I paid for it.
-surprised it comes with premium components (Samsung 960 evo, 1070, 7th Gen i7, 75-100hz refresh panel)
-surprised to see such a compact and light build for such a machine
    -ports galore!
-not a gargantuan power brick... Seriously the omen brick is literally an 11 inch laptop in itself haha

    Cons:
    - not a 7820hk cpu (not this model anyways)
-louder fans (no whine but just louder overall)
-a tad of screen bleed but nowhere near as much as the omen!
-runs a bit hot (max of 88 on benchmarks but not on laptop cooler like the omen x) but once again surprisingly good thermals Vs the omen x which had 88 max as well but with laptop cooler, it was overclocked to 4.2 however.
-keyboard is good but nothing to write home about
-screen could be better (120-144hz would be sweet)
    -finicky track pad so far.

I'm technically upgrading from a p670 with a 980m and sold it for a little under 1k and was a able to knock off ~$120 off the microcenter price (1340 with taxes) vs 2100 for a deeply discounted omen x 17. Now I need to decide which one of these if going back haha. I mainly run ffxiv and the 4th Gen i7 and 980m was already Damn near maxing it out... I'm not sure I need the extra firepower the omen x is putting... But that keyboard is amazing. I'm sure I can squeeze out some extra frames and Temps with a re-paste and tune up on the 1710 too.

Edit: Also, anyone figure out a way to remove the branding? I have quite a bit of vinyl wrap but i'd love to remove the "slightly" embossed lid logo since that will show through the wrap. I did it with my Sager but it was just an aluminum sticker.

I tried to search the thread but I cant seem to find a definitive answer.

Would it be possible to get another Samsung 960 evo and run them in raid 0?

Yes, but keep in mind the 2nd M.2 port runs at Gen3 x2, not x4. But since they're EVOs it will only affect max read speeds on the 2nd drive. Not what I would call a big deal.

I would consider replacing the 250GB with dual 500GB units. The 500GB unit and higher perform better. MC sells them for $199 in store.

I wanted to touch base with other owners about 17331.71 aka 1803. I was using it and keep getting some weirdo BSOD issues, plus I had to reinstall the chipset drivers to regain some stability. The updated 17341.1 is out on Fast Ring, which I am installing as I type this, which supposedly addresses these issues.

So if you've been itching for RS4, wait for final RTM release, or do it from Fast Ring.

@Riktar : If it was me, I'd return the Omen and keep the 1710, and invest in a sweet gamer keyboard. I'm looking at the Corsair K63 Wireless. It's Cherry MX Red mechanical, tenkeyless, and supports 2.4GHz 1ms dongle or Bluetooth 4.0 or better. I also have the Corsair Dark Core, which supports the same options. Would be sweet to have external mouse/kb on BT4.0.

Also, once you do the repaste the temps will get a lot better. Use a thick paste, like Gelid or ICD7.

I'm very sorry, but it was over 6 years ago that I actually compared the temps with the cooler and without on my Qosmio. I'll see what I get on my 1510 and get back to you.

Yeah, I imagine MC would not like it if you cut up the case. I'm not worried about it though. i don't plan on returning it or having any heating issues. I re-pasted with Conductonaut and my temps plummeted by 16C. I understand your concern, but it's fairy easy to repaste and I can't imagine anyone would be able to tell if you opened the laptop up or not if you don't replace any of the parts inside.

I agree with you, a laptop cooler is better than none, even if you choose not to mod the case.

Yeah, I left the laptop running ffxiv for a good 13 hours today on max settings, 75hz, uncapped fps (I know it's a bit overkill) and it appears to have hit the mid 90's sometime during the day. I have some icd7 tubes laying around in my toolkit so I'm going to try a re-paste and maybe an undervolt and see what I can squeeze reel it back down but if it works I think this might be a keeper. I already have a couple mechanical keyboards (wired corsair with brown switches and a drevo mechanical bt I keep in my bag for work and home) and have a g900 wireless mouse along with a g933 wireless headsets on hand, so Im not too worried about the wonky audio and finicky trackpad but a less "meh" kb on this unit would have been amazing.

    That's quite a temp drop!
It does not void warranty by opening the 1510 case (or other devices) noticeably missing is the "Void if etc" warning which some manufactures put on devices and which is actually illegal according to the FTC. But it is kind of a gray area there if re-pasting is considered modifying.
Maybe I will just ask MC management and if they say it will void it I will say fine then you re-paste or otherwise fix it from overheating (even though it's technically not at this point)
I am probably being over cautious about the whole thing but then again I am thinking about the re-sale value as well if I want to get something new next year when the new chips come out.
That brings up another point about the MC warranties, they transfer to the new owner.
Anyway if I get around to talking to them about it will post the outcome

@Riktar The other thing I was thinking is that with the money you save on keeping the 1710, you can invest in adding/upgrading it's storage capacity.

Yeah, I'm contemplating leaving the 960 evo as the OS and getting a 1 tb m.2 for games and then the 1tb hdd for mass storage etc.. although i don't even think the raid 0 500gb 960 evo might be sufficient for my needs. I'm just hoping a repaste will reel the temps back down in the mid 70's.

I just picked this up from MicroCenter tonight. In addition, I bought the Lapboard to go with it. It's pretty nice having my keyboard and mouse solidly supported on a mini table on my thighs. Now my keyboard isn't sitting directly on my legs and my mouse is no longer sitting on a hard cover book. I have to get used to the keyboard. Been decades since I typed on a mechanical. I highly recommend it. Wish it was RGB, but you can't win them all I guess. Blue IS my favorite color...so...win?

Do you think there is any REAL WORLD difference between running 2.4G or Bluetooth? Latency and all that gaming jazz.

    1ms 2.4GHz dongle
    7ms BT 4.0

Difference? Depends if you are a competitive FPS pro. :) Otherwise enjoy the convenience of not needing a dongle on your laptop's USB3 ports.

If you're going to be doing competitive hardcore competitive gaming then sure there will be SOME latency, it also depends on which type of BT? 4.0 4.1 4.2, +? the newest versions are virtually lag free and the new logitech tech is on par with the wired counterparts. Keyboards are little more forgiving but i'd still opt for the most recent BT. Also make sure the laptop BT is compatible also, no sense in getting a BT 5.0 kb when your laptop only has 4.1 (i guess you could always upgrade the network card... lol)

edit: Pretty much what @Chastity said haha

If you are particularly sensitive you can still feel the input latency difference but it wont impact most people enough to worry about.

Currently using my 1710 with the Dell S2417DG and I can confirm it can output 1440p @165hz using the mini-DP port. The HDMI port limits that resolution down to 60hz. Make sure you buy the correct DP cable with the pin 20 not connected

BT4.0 is way more than 7ms on most bluetooth adapters. I measured mine around 80ms without the input lag chain

Your ports on the monitor are DP 1.2, and HDMI 1.4. The HDMI port is limiting your bandwidth to support the 165Hz refresh rate @ 1440.

Corsair supports Bluetooth Low Latency mode (4.0 and higher) rated at 7ms. You need to remember that Corsair just entered the wireless business with the K63 and Dark Core, so they went top-shelf from the get-go.

Well, this is odd. My "s" and "2" keys both stopped working simultaneously about 15 minutes ago. Ironically, I now cannot unlock my computer due to this.

Edit: fixed. Pressed around the keyboard with some pressure. Working again.

I wanted to share my experiences with the current 1803/17341.1 updates, as it may shed some light for others:

After doing the update to 1803, I had some instability issues in the form of BSODs during gaming and watching videos. Various errors, includion IRQL_NOT_EQUAL and some crashed graphical components. I did a clean reinstall of current NV driver, including DDU, updating chipset, etc. I got some improvement, but it would still happen on occasion. (At least once a day)

When I tried to uninstall the NV driver the first time, it failed. I had to uninstall it in pieces, then wipe with DDU. So I figured the OS updates stomped my gfx install. After redoing it, and it was still crashing, I decided to systematically redo all drivers. Which got me to my Optimus situation.

When I put the BIOS back to MSHYBRID and restarted, I discovered that the Intel install was completely removed. Looking for a current build, I discovered ever since FCU, Win10 includes the Intel driver locally, which installed. Things looked ok so far. Then I went back to Discrete graphics, and I had to reboot twice to get the NV side back in order.

Now everything so far has been stable. It appears that not having the Intel side in a poor state affected even Discrete mode, and needed to be rectified to have a stable system.

So for people doing OS updates, if you encounter instability afterwards, you should look at redoing your drivers. Also, do the OS updates while in MSHYBRID mode, so that both GPUs get setup properly.

The K63 keyboard supports BT 4.2

    Thanks for the opinions, everyone.

I'm trying to get confirmation that the Dark Core mouse is also 4.2 on Corsair's forums. Some say 4.0, others 4.2 + LE (like kitguru) Their site doesn't specify, neither does the box.

This is important to me cuz our 1710 comes with the 8265, which is BT 4.2 capable.

It won't make any difference to how they felt it for their review though.

4.0 vs 4.2 should not make any difference for a mouse or keyboard. Both are limited to the same 7.5ms connection interval, and use the same HID over GATT profile.

I repasted with ICD7 yesterday, I ran it through some tests OCCT didn't break 77 but for some reason it would only clock to 3.5ghz and wouldn't hit 3.8ghz.. I was too tired to keep tinkering with it, i'm sure it's just a setting in the tool. I left FFXIV running all night on AFK HWINFO has a max of 82 but avg of 73. So far so good.

I have the stock paste on my 1510 and really depends on the game and load how hot the system gets. Farcry5 runs very cool maxed out while Witcher3 and ACSydicate runs really warm almost in 80c range on gpu and cpu as an example
As far as the processor speed I don't think I have ever seen it hit 3.8ghz usually the max is 3.6ghz. If you look at the "event viewer" do you see any kernel power warnings? just curious.
Also I would run the Intel cpu check utility to make sure speed step speed shift and all is working as should be.

I think though you will find it has to do with the cores and the way Intel designs the cpus to work if all the cores are working it won't hit 3.8ghz but if say it were using just one core it would hit 3.8ghz.
So the more active cores the lower the overall frequency but it is actually doing more work

With the stock paste, my 1510 was going over 90 pretty easily and the temps didn't go back down until I re-pasted with Liquid Metal Conductonaut.

I should have mentioned I am undervolting by -.1000 very stable and no throttling. I still say the heat sink is on the small size for the components. Hard to imagine on top of that they would use and do a poor paste job at the factory.
Any idea of the kind of paste they use? and how did the coverage look? when you popped the sink off

Thanks for the clarification - All the previous 7th gen laptops have been 7820hk, first time with the 7700hq so not really sure on how it behaves lol. I'm eager to put it through the paces tonight.
