They make decently built stands at least, the most important part is elevating the back slightly.

The logo on the laptop says "Tuned By Sound Blaster X Pro Gaming" I have a sneaky suspicion that the logo program has to do with some of the hardware choices for the audio circuit as well as the add-on software. Based on line-out quality, this has to be the best on-board audio solution I've listened to. I haven't had the opportunity to fully open up this laptop to see what DAC and opamp is used, caps, etc.

It's something Clevo have put some work into so people get a nice experience using the internal jacks.

Hi guys, started using the 1510 today. For some reason, my right-click button is not working on the steelseries sensei 310. Anyone know how to fix that?
Edit: never mind it was defective. Replaced it and it works fine now.Last edited: Dec 26, 2017 -
Gsync and Vsync on 1510
I thought you didn't need to use vsync if gsync was on. Divinity OS2 was tearing bad until I turned on vsync. Can someone explain this to me?
Also, whats a good tool to measure/record cpu and gpu temps? So far I've overclocked the fans and undervolted -110. -
I use HWmonitor to show min/max/avg CPU and GPU temps and GPU-Z to track or log GPU temps over time (GPU-Z gives better results over time because it has graphs while HWmonitor is just one number). I don't have a good suggestion for graphing CPU temperatures over time, sorry. -
-
HWmonitor was perfect. Temps are really good in the Witcher 3 and Divinity OS2 (mid to low 70's).
I'm still getting a lot of tearing in both games. I checked the nvidia tool and gsync appears to be on. Frame rate capped at 60 for both games. With just Gsync, it's real bad. With Vsync and Gsync it's slightly better but still a lot of tearing. What am I doing wrong? -
Prostar Computer likes this.
-
It helped in Divinity a bit, but the Witcher 3 only lets you set it to 30 or 60. Gonna try just vsync with no gsync.

You can try to use external programs to limit FPS.
-
The solution was setting the FPS to unlimited on Witcher 3. Max temp hit 82 (previous max was 76), so not bad. I can’t get over how good it looks on the 1510.

I was told there is supposed to be an "advance device settings" option or a gear icon in Realtek audio manager that isn't showing on this laptop.
http://img.techpowerup.org/080618/HDaudiohelp.jpg
Some of these options look like what I'm looking for. Still trying to find a way to enable this option. I'll edit .ini's, the registry, heck, I'll bust out a hex editor if it'll fix this. -
Can anyone confirm whether the 1710's HDD bay can accomodate a 15mm 2.5" hdd?

I don't believe it can do it unofficially either.
-
I heard some of these units have had issues with the headphone jack issues not working, have many people here had to deal with that? Glanced through the thread and didn't see too much mention of it at least recently. Any other issues to look out for? Really tempted with the 1510 (hard to beat a laptop with a GTX 1070 and GSync for $1300+tax) but my closest Microcenter is about an hour way (or more with traffic) and would prefer not going back and forth to exchange it.
-
Saw some nice 4TB 15mm drives I was contemplating getting. I have an old Seagate 888GB drive that's 15mm thick, and see if the case will close.
-
I may have solved the gpu clock issue for mine. Not 100% sure yet. I set power mode in Nvidia control panel 3D settings to Max Performance, restarted and left Chrome closed and was hitting the max clock speed, no longer stuck at 1468mhz.

Hey guys, I’ve been enjoying the performance of my 1510. Been mostly playing Divinty OS2. Gaming performance is smooth (now that I figured out g-sync). Temp wise, I have it set to a -110 undervolt and elevated with a laptop cooler. Temps average around 75 with peaks in the low 80’s. Brief testing with the Witcher 3 gave similar results.
I think these are good numbers, what do you experts think? -
FYI @Tuan Hoang, I believe you were having clock issues as well. What I did fixed it. I have everything open in back ground, and am hitting 1873mhz in game now no problem. Also, temps shot up with that increase as well.
-
Anyone know what sensor is Temp1 in SpeedFan?
-
I had some high temps in Deus Ex Mankind Divided (notorious for its high CPU usage) until I used some "advance thermal management technology techniques" (as seen below). It seems like a little help for its ventilation and using maximum fans make a huge difference with the 1510 chassis.

My cooling solution is some double stick tape and a few erasers.

Well my clocks were fine. Not changing a thing, they slowed back to 1468mhz max. Restarting to see if that affects it.
Restart fixed max clock, back to 1873mhz max. -

-
Well, I can't figure out the clock limiting issue. It's back again. All I did was play PUBG. It's not a temp thing because the same temps were running at 1800mhz
And my temps are at 64C full load currently.
It's wild how much ambient air temp affects these compared to what I remember from desktops.Last edited: Jan 6, 2018 -

You guys should be undervolting these and replacing the paste. Way too close to TJ MAX temp of 100c.
@BrinNutz. Ambient temps makes a significant when the margin is this small being a laptop. Also, PUBG is a lousy way to test clock speed. That title does not use any hardware component to its max. -
It is limited in 3DMark, anything graphics intensive. But I can't figure out what causes it. It isn't Temps or program related. But a restart once it kicks in fixes it after I changed power settings. -
@GrinningColossus
something wrong with your cooling, i never had anything above 85(it was with auto fans)
with maxed fans fn+1, 81max.
so its bad paste or bad contact with cooler.
@BrinNutz
you are talking about video right? you should mention it 1st of all, before all this mind flood.
nominal freqs for cards are there 14xx, 1800 its turboboosted freqs for card, and it used when it needed. If your game not bottled at video card and video card is pretty much in idle, it just dont feel reason to go on 1800.
Check it with gpuz, it give you reason of perf. cap. -
Thanks for the explanation, makes sense that I have the reason idle. What's funny though is at other times it peaks and is over 1468 during the game, then other times (same game) it won't be above 1468. Temps are same. I would imagine 3DMark would push those needs to use the turbo boost, but it didn't. I bet I could go run it again and see the higher clock speeds. -
Opened up my 1710 today to test a 15mm drive in the HDD bay, and if you are REALLY a diehard must-have, you could, but you'll have some lovely flexing of the bottom case cover. It gets close to closing normally, and you could force it closed and screw down, and you'll need to be creative in keeping the HDD in place. On the upside, the SATA cable has plenty of flexibility to accommodate the 15mm drive.
Tho, I will reiterate, I don't recommend it for the skiddish in laptop modding. Now about ordering that 4TB HDD... -
Howdy y'all
I recently (well over black friday) purchased a 15 inch dark ash HP spectre for around the same price as the 1510 powerspec.
I got the laptop out of impulse b/c it's literally LITERALLY the most beautiful laptop ever made, the other close 2nd being the 13 inch variant of the dark ash HP spectre.
I also purchased a desktop PC via bestbuy for like 630 from the sale but it had a faulty PSU and a severely underforming GPU, aka faulty product... so I returned that.
Now it's almost return deadlines and I am without a desktop.
I have been considering returning the HP spectre for to pick up the 1510 because I just really like laptops and the 1510 would make a good desktop replacement, moving every now and then when I need to take it places for work or whatnot.
Being generally sedentary, is it bad to have it plugged it 78% of its' time in my possession? (aka it's a desktop-replacement for most of it's life.)
EDIT:: like is it okay to have it plugged in though? I did that with my vaio and it was fine... sort of. The battery died last year so it was just always needing to be plugged in. I used to have small dreams of it sometimes coming back, never came true. Stayed dreams.
I have two laptop coolers that I can magically stack on top of each other because I'm a mad-man.
I just know that if I return this HP spectre, I will miss out on a guaranteed working laptop that I got for like 350 dollars off.
Is there a risk in getting the 1510? Like with temperatures and whatnot? I definitely don't want the 1710, that thing is a skinny gorilla.
-I read almost all the messages but I lost track of who was who and what y'all systems were with the 1710 and the 1510 being in the same thread.
So far, I understand that temps SHOULD be fine with the 1510..?
I should turn all settings to 60 fps to avoid screen tearing and use GSYNC
something about undervolting by like 100 or something
something about discrete/mshybrid (goes with g-sync)
something about...
wait as I write this I just had a grand idea. Maybe I should flip my cooling pad over and have it SUCK the hot air out of a laptop instead of blowing cool air into it... do you think that's just stupid?
Also anyway, so the frames are set at 60 hz but can I plug in a 144 monitor to it VIA mini display port and do that when I have an itch to web browse at 144? (I played games on a 5 year old vaio with a intel 520 or something so I'm whatever about game FPS but the 144 hz when web browsing is literally the highlight of 2017... and I freaking graduated this past fall [ clapclap took 6 years ])
Is there room for a 2.5 inch SSD in there? I have a 2.5 inch SSD that I've been holding onto just in case I get another desktop but with the prices atm, the desktop may have to wait... I'm not paying 1.8x the price of a desktop. -
@duckneck
1) It's fine to keep the laptop plugged in. Modern systems will not overcharge the battery. You should every couple of months let the battery drain completely.
2) The 1510 with a GTX1070 8GB vs the HP Spectre with a MX150 2GB. The 1510 is a definite upgrade. And there's nothing wrong with the skinny 1710.The temps are just fine.
3) The 1510 supports GSync in Discrete mode @ 60Hz. The 1710 supports GSync in Discrete mode @ 75Hz, overclockable to 100Hz.
4) No, do not reverse the airflow on the cooler. You want to create air pressure, not take it away.
5) Using external monitors work just fine with mini-DP to DP cables.
6) There is 1 HDD bay, which contains a standard 1TB HDD. You can remove the HDD and replace it with a SSD if desired. You also have a second NVMe slot which you can add a 2nd NVMe SSD. (I added a 960 EVO 500GB on mine and kept the 1TB HDD) You could use a USB3 to SATA adapter and use the SSD externally too since you don't move it around too much. I also invested in an external 6TB Seagate USB3 drive for storage / backup. -
Oh so me plugging in a 144 hz monitor to the laptop would have that monitor function at 144, regardless of the laptops native 60 hz cap!? That's awesome.
How would that affect performance/heat/temps though for the 1510? If the game is just on the 144 hz monitor, would temps be murder? -
On my skinny gorilla 1710, I use my system's 100Hz panel, and my temps are still quite reasonable. Just make sure you tip up the back end with something to allow for better underside airflow, or have the unit sit atop a laptop cooler.
BTW, the 1710 has dual fan heatsink for the GPU and works just fine. Just because it's skinny doesn't mean the temps will be horrendous.
And yes, if your monitor is 144Hz capable, then the laptop will do 144Hz over miniDisplayPort/HDMI2.0. If it's GSync capable as well, then use your miniDisplayport connection. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Yes, the mini displayports/HDMI come from the dedicated GPU so you get all of Nvidia's output support on those ports.

UPDATE: my last post about this laptop was December 20, now that I've been using it for a couple weeks I wanted to give you guys an update.
This thing is a beast. Runs every game I play Witcher 3, PUBG, Fortnite, ARK Survival Evolved, Starcraft, City's Skylines. I can get ~150 fps on ARK and 300 FPS on starcraft. Over 150 fps on pubg too.
- Make sure your laptop is plugged in while gaming
- FN+1 to turn fans on max
- If you are having any problems with games download throttlestop and check in the top right that it says you are around 3400 MHz
If you aren't at 3400 MHz then you are either on power saver mode or your max cpu is capped. By the same logic if you want to reduce battery life (especially when not plugged in) you can cap the cpu so it will use less battery.
My temps while gaming range from 50-70 now (was hitting 90-99 before) after a very good tech used team-viewer to remote control my comp and fixed a bunch of the settings. Not exactly sure what he did but I know my comp works like a boss lol. He did it for free but I threw him some $$ because of how much he helped me. His discord is D2ultima#5824 if anyone needs help with this computer he is a genius.
My only remaining complains about this laptop are the volume isn't too loud, the fingerprint scanner works when it wants to, and the charging cable is a bit short. These are all so minor I laugh about how good this laptop is compared to my last one. I still haven't gotten the thermal paste re-applied but I haven't really gone over 70 so I'm very happy. That's without a cooling pad too. I just want to thank everyone who offered me advice and I hope I can give back and help anyone else that just got or is having trouble with this laptop.
10/10 would recommend this beast to anyone. -
-
On my 1510, I undervolted -110, use a laptop cooler, and use the overclock fan profile to get average temps in the 70’s with peaks in the low 80’s.
I mean I’m ok with my current temps, but those sound amazing! -
Has anyone messed around with the power settings like in the video below? If so, how did it affect performance and temps?
-
Possible stupid question. Do you have to reapply the undervolt everytime you boot up? It shows it in the IXTU when I check it, but I read today that it may not actually be undervolting until you reapply it. Also do you have to keep the IXTU app on for it to undervolt?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It will reset on an EC reset or detecting a bad restart. Until that happens it does not need to run but will warn you of a settings reset if it does start on boot.
