Ah good! What do you think about adjusting the power settings?

@BrinNutz hey I just reinstalled Windows last night. This is the driver it automatically installed for me. Tested Deus Ex MD and you know what? No more clock speed drop! It stayed around 1800mhz all time!
I haven't touched any driver settings or power management mode. The only thing that is I haven't installed CCC just yet.
Oh, and if you notice, the driver installed by Windows only has 2 things in Programs and Features, as pointed out by my red arrow. I remember when you install from Nvidia it has like 4 or 5 things in there.
So yeah... I'm pretty sure it's a driver problem. But I'm not sure if it could be CCC also? Can you please get this driver version from Nvidia and confirm for me? (remember to clean install to clear settings)

Must be driver limits. -

the locking happens when the power draw exceeds 120watt, while the temperature is higher than ~74C. if you find a way to lock the card at 120watt - this throttling disappears.
strangely the vbios on these machines is rated at 125w, while the system bios is locked at 120! -

in case you have boost going and staying at 1800mhz, this means your GPU is not using all the power, otherwise the clocks would be little lower at around 1700mhz. the locked throttling to 1468 is only happening with gpu draws around 122watts+ for a minute and at the same time temperature is higher than 74C. -

How the heck do you get into the bios? When do you start and stop pressing f2? How often (micro enter says 1 second). I keep going straight to windows.

Yes, it's the only device on your SATA system. The included HGST 1TB 7200RPM drive isn't a slouch, and you could use it for applications. I would really suggest taking advantage of your 2nd M.2 slot and nab a NVMe drive. Makes a great game install drive. Also your lappy comes with a thermal pad for the 2nd NVMe.
I also added an external Seagate 6TB drive for offloading stuff and backups. (Grabbed one for $94 from Staples) -
I currently use Avira for AV but this came with a NOD32 eval license. Any thoughts on their software?
I'll post a review after I've had some time to play with this but if anyone has any recommended tweaks, please let me know. I'm going to go back and read this thread some time today because I know there's probably some good ones here already! So far, I'm happy with it. The touchpad is a nice texture but it's a bit sensitive, especially with where I need to put my hands to type. I'll probably just end up turning it off like I did on my Valkyrie Cz-17 and use a mouse. No dead pixels from what I can tell, keyboard feels good and it's pretty.
I had spent most of my time debating between a MSI GS73 with 1070 Max-Q and a baseline GT75VR. Truth be told I feel like this is kind of right in the middle and since I just want something to game with when I can't be on my desktop, this seems to have met that need...at least from a price/capability perspective. -
Don't even bother with a RAID0 M.2 setup. 1st off, the 2nd M.2 slot is Gen3 x2, so it's half the speed of the first one. Also, you will not get much, if any, of a performance benefit. Just use the 2nd M.2 for game installs.
As for ESET AV, I liked them in the past, but I get McAfee for free from my ISP.rally_point likes this. -
HI everybody,
i just purchased a 1710 just a day ago. I've noticed a few things immediately. #1 loudddd fans. #2 CPU gets really hot. I've undervolted this thing -.12 volts and it will still hit 90-92 playing a game like Rainbow Six: Siege (most settings set to ultra). The GPU seems to be fine around lower 80s.
Basically I went to reapply thermal paste with MX-4. Well taking the back off was an adventure in its self. Turns out you also have to unscrew it from the top with a screw that is under the keyboard...fun times. So once I have the bottom off and I can finally access the internals I begin to unscrew the heatsink. Until THE PROBLEM: the four silver screws (I BELIEVE these are M3X3 screws) holding the heatsink in right above the CPU die...they are IMPOSSIBLE to unscrew. I am definitely using a small enough screw driver, others were even too small! I really don't know what to do.... are these screws glued in??? are they stripped from the factory?? I really don't know what to do and I WANT to apply new thermal paste to help with these ATROCIOUS temps on the CPU. Please...has anyone tore the 1710 down?? PLEASE HELP. I do not know wtf to do. My last resort to drill them out...i really don't know. -
Picked one of the 1710s up yesterday and loving everything about it. I was testing temps playing R6 Siege after changing some settings and consistently hit 99C on all four CPU cores and surely throttling - until I discovered the "Performance" setting was the culprit in the CC. Switching back to the Entertainment setting kept CPU temps around 90-92C which seems much more reasonable.
Edit: Nevermind. Still hitting 99C playing Siege. I have no idea why. Haven't tried undervolting yet, but shouldn't that kind of thing be taken into account before designing and shipping a laptop?Last edited: Jan 14, 2018 -
My 1710's GPU temp when playing Deus Ex: MD was around 80, then it slowly climbed up to 90 and throttled just a bit (clock was still 1700-ish Mhz). After removing the keyboard, it stayed in the 80s and never throttled again -

Improving underside airflow does more to control temps than maxing fan speed. If the airflow is poor, running the fans faster will not improve the situation, since you still have negative air pressure.

These temp solutions are all well and good...but nobody actually answered, or even started a dialogue concerning my main issue, which is the 4 heatsink screws above the CPU. Has anyone taken them out and done a repaste on the GPU & CPU on this exact 1710 model? I seriously cannot unscrew those 4 silver screws...am I alone here?

I just came home with the 1510 and I believe have installed everything needed. This is my first foray with PC gaming so are there any programs that are must download? I know after looking through here I saw something about a frame limiter to work with the GSYNC? Thank you in advance.
I bought a cooler to go with it since I've heard about cooling issues. Once I get everything setup completely I will try and work on the undervolting that I read on here. -

FYI: Clevo site has updated drivers for our systems, posted Jan 06, 2018. Mostly for updated drivers for RS3.

@mungry
i have service manual for pa7x if you need. -
I just reserved the 1510 open box for 899... i read through the whole thread... are there any deal breakers on the 1510 other than not having thunderbolt?

i had gotten a 27 in 1440p aoc agon 165hz gsync for my desktop.
is the battery life really that bad? i read 2 hours... -

Opps - sorry wrong manual. Thought you had the 1510. Sorry. -
There's a "MSHybrid" mode, this uses Optimus technology, make use of the intel HD graphics, then auto switch to the 1070 when needed. This saves battery since the intergrated GPU is less power hungry than the gtx 1070.
This is probably the nicest thing about Clevo laptops, since they implemented hardware multiplexer (aka MUX), allowing both GSync and Optimus to exist.Last edited: Jan 16, 2018omniskillz likes this. -

1710 Question. In bios, does anyone's memory timing show an XMP option?
Beyond that I'm really liking the laptop. Yes the fans make a bit of noise when gaming but it's understandable. The first thing I did after i got it was to remove the hdd and install an SSD in it's place (cause i had one not being used). At that time and based on the review's I read, I repasted the cpu/gpu with Gelid Extreme. My temps gaming have never gotten to 90 (PUBG, Ashes, COD). Sitting on my lap with an old laptop cooling pad, they are in the mid to upper 70's.
So, good hardware, Samsung 960 Nvme, 75hz gsync, G skill ram, intel wifi, good keybord, Hybrid gpu/cpu option and full GTX 1070. Good construction. == Happy camper
I've own or owned MSI GT72 2qe Dominator Pro(Still in service), Panasonic Gaming laptop(great screen, but dead due to MB failure), Asus G73JH (gave to family member and still being used to game). Today, I like the 1710 the best.
PS. I did not have any trouble removing cpu or gpu heat sink screws. -
I've been doing some further testing with temps on the 1710 and have sort of found a happy compromise.
One thing I can say for sure is that the CPU always runs hotter than the GPU. This probably has something to do with the shared heatsink...so anytime the GPU goes up in temps the CPU will go up further. That's when I started paying attention to not just the CPU temps, but the GPU temps. My goal was to undervolt the GPU. From my understanding the 1070 will run at a default 1.05v. What I managed to do is undervolt to a (mostly, from what I've gathered so far) stable .895v on the 1070. Now the GPU never goes past 80 (maybe by 1-2 degrees) and sits in the upper 70s for most of the time. As a product of this GPU undervolt the CPU sits perfectly around 80 for most of the time (some additional deviation, of course, maybe by the most 4-5 degrees). Now, I must also mention that the CPU has a -0.125v undervolt. I think I find myself very happy with these results and the fans are not as intense as when hit the 90 range, so those are more bearable. Unfortunately, I have not been able to repaste either processor with MX-4 due to my rather inconvenient predicament with a certain 4 screws (this is where the shared heatsink really rears its ugly head). Anyways, just thought I'd share my findings. I highly advise any possible undervolt with MSI afterburner on the GPU...it's worth it. -
Hey guys got a 1710 for Christmas. Haven't had tons of time to mess around with it so I'm still working out some kinks. One thing that has me bothered though is when playing certain games (PUBG) my FPS are all over the place. Prior to messing around with GSync my average FPS were a very choppy, in the teens and low 20s. Also, after playing for ~30 minutes the whole laptop would just randomly shut off. Since messing around in GSync a little bit I can't get an accurate reading as the FPS jump from 20s to 40s to 100s (still choppy), but the shutting off has stopped (for now). Any suggestions? My CPU temps seem to stay in the low 80's. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

@freakrok - What about GPU temps? Sudden shutdowns are typically a result of overheating or hardware malfunction, nothing to do with G-Sync or your FPS. As far as the performance is concerned, have you tried removing GeForce Experience and updating the NVidia driver (using the clean installation option)?
