With the fan fix?
-
No, separately.
-
That's a new point....
My BIOS is 1.00.03, so I wonder if I should upgrade...
wich one do you have, Eleron ?
And where are these BIOSes available for download ?, didn't found them on Clevo and Sager sites -
I have the one that came with my 5791 , but I don`t know the # . I`ll check back and report later on.
-
is the fan fix a complete new bios?
-
-
No, it's only the KBC/EC (Keyboard/Embedded controller) firmware and it's separated from the main bios.
Thanks Eleron for your report, as I know our machines are about the same generation... -
ok, so if you use this fan fix, and then also flash your bios so you can run the 8800m GTX at full speed with newer drivers (other big thread) - both will still work together?
-
Well I'm not sure at all for that, think we need some feedback from people already using this latest bios...
-
I have the latest bios (the one which fixes the driver issue) and the latest fan firmware, I can confirm they both work together with no problems so far.
and im using it on a non sager machine (novatech) but the model is the same (m57RxU 8800MGTX) -
The firmware is done by Clevo at Sager`s request. So any m570ru based machine should benefit from this firmware.
I just hope that they`ll be able to give us control over the speed since we all have different machines... -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
They can't really make the fans user controlled because if they are mismanaged, and excessive heat causes damage, it will become a bit of a sticky warranty issue.
-
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
It doesn't contradict at all.
The difference is if any damage is caused as a result of Clevo firmware, it is on Clevo...if it is caused by user mismanagement it would be on the user and they don't want to expose users to that risk. -
That still makes no sense, they could easily make it so the user cannot turn the fans off and even set minimum fan speed.
-
what is your definition of user control?
-
any control over the fans would be considered user control...I could care less about user control though, all I want is the auto setting fixed to speed the fans up automatically instead of waiting on a thresh hold and then kicking up at full blast.
-
On the same clevo design for the M57xRU, every user has a different reported threshold.
So the only thing that works here is to do this:
- 1)allow the user to set the fan speeds to 30% . It is most certainly enough to keep the system cool while browsing.
- 2) set an absolute threshold to about 50C , when if reached , should bypass the 30% fan speed and increase toi 40%.
- 3) if temps still go higher , to about 55C, increase to 50% and so on.
The cooling system in this thing is amazing to say the least.
Using .f firmware sets my idle temps , and when browsing to 29/26C CPU and 33 C GPU. There is surely enough room to make the fans slower, because there is a lot of room for heat at these settings.Just look at my attachment, the moment i forced medium mode my temps started to drop and went to a steady point!
I mean come on, we`re at .h firmware and they still can`t make the thing quieter when idling or web browsing because they won`t use a 30% fan speed until a SET threshold would be reached.
I`ve talked to a friend who works in the hardware department and he sais that what I want is not hard to attain, especially if you do like I said : set a threshold that cannot be bypassed by the user and upto to that temp allow him to choose a speed below 50%.
That is what I call user control.
The very second firmware changed my threshold from 48C to 39C. That is just ridiculous. So there is room for improvement.Attached Files:

I know it has already been said on this topic, but the only way to have a firmware that would work great for every system is to use progressive fan speed increase according to the temp (I don't say these are the right values, but just an example):
Temp < 40° -> speed 20%
Temp > 40° -> speed 40%
Temp > 50° -> speed 60%
Temp > 60° -> speed 80%
Temp > 70° -> speed 100%
With a 4°C hysteresis to avoid ramping
It's the way the CPU fan works, and it works fine, so why not just do the same for the GPU fan ?
This is the only way a fan that has to be silent must be driven, and any low-level/hardware coder should know that.
Now I agree with Eleron, everybody reports different behaviors, temps, treshold...I can understand that cause each system is nearly different due to so many configurations possible.
That's just to say that staying in the "fixed values path" will never make everybody happy.
So if Clevo do not want/is not able to go in that progressive fan speed they have to give us control on the low fan speed in Fn+3 mode.
And regarding to warranty issues, I'm surprised that Clevo didn't pay attention to what we said here about the overheating issue in Fn+3 mode that we have since release f. If it's ok for the members of this forum cause we know we must avoid gaming in Fn+3 mode, what about other Sager's customers that can download this firmware (problem is still the same in h)... They would just say, wow cool, it's really quieter in Fn+3 mode, and keep gaming in Fn+3 at 80°C . And in a few months Clevo would receive a lot of burnt GPU units. I remind you this issue has been reported since february the 23rd.
I consider firmwares f and g are really more dangerous for the GPU health than giving user control on fan speed (with security).
Now at that point and according to the following facts:
- so many fixes that do not work or work so bad like d and e.
- new firmwares (f and g) that break things that where working fine previously (Fn+3 mode overheating issue)
- everybody speaking of "Sager's engineers working on the problem"
- updates that are available on Sager's site but not on Clevo's site (what about non Sager customers ?)
... All that makes me wonder if Clevo's engineers are really working on this or if it's just Sager's technicians trying to tweak this firmware by changing some values, but without having a full control on what they are doing cause they don't have the necessary stuff (full source code, docs, specs, etc...). It would still be a nice and kind try but will never lead to a proper fix.
I would appreciate a direct answer from Clevo here.
Edit : Donald, Justin, and Sager : nothing against you, I really appreciate your help and your willing to fix this, just wonder if things are done in the right way...

I really like the 5792, and my only problem with it is the noise. The fans are small, which means that they have to rotate fast to create sufficient air flow. On quiet desktops, the CPU and GPU fans are usually quite large, so they can spin slowly and generate little noise.
The fans themselves could be better quality - my GP fan has already failed, and I had to replace it.
Finally, having larger heatsinks would help as well - maybe Clevo could increase their size in future models. -
I do really like this computer and enjoy it for everything (except the noise while doing light work).
And that's why I kept it with the hope the problem will be solved instead of selling it like did n_maher.
I also thanks Donald and Justin for their help, Sager (and Clevo ?) for the first fixes that are still better than stock firmware.
BUT there's on thing I can't admit :
It's more than two weeks we got a new firmware that allows to run the GPU at 75-80°C by gaming in Fn+3 mode.
As this firmware is still available on Sager's site I understand that Clevo/Sager see no issue in running the GPU at that high temp for hours.
And on the other side they say it would be an issue to reduce the fan speed when the GPU is idling at 30-40°C while surfing !!!
Don't you think there's something contradictory there... ??? -
That`s exactly what I`m saying. My temps are so low that they`re basically ice cold in terms of GPU temps- 32C on just browsing.
If this can`t be fixed, I`ll have to sell it too, I can`t stand the noise when just browsing. It`s already beyond ridiculous.
Either give us fan control and establish a threshold that cannot be overrided by anyone, or make a progressive speed increase.
I see that a lot of people agreed with that and I KNOW IT CAN BE DONE. If only those technicians would actually pay attention to what we need.
Otherwise I`m stuck with a 2300$ screaming browser. -
wow....man im not having any noise issues with my computer....its fine when im browsing and I can barely hear it. Are you guys using the latest firmware? Maybe you guys could update your bios and see if that helps!
-
I just got my 5793 today and it is a bit loud but it really doesen't bother me....I rather have beefy noisy fans then wimpy fans any day.
I would compare it to my 360 with the 360 being a tad louder. -
What is the latest BIOS release available for the M570RU (aka Sager 5791) ?
I'm having the 1.00.03 that came with my laptop.
Eleron, did you check which # you're using ? -
THe latest is 1.00.007
The beta is 1.00.08 -

TBH I dont find my "NP5793" to be that noisy, it does ramp up from time til time, mostly when powered on from cold. After it has heated a little, it will only ramp up 1-2 pr half an hour while browsing, using word and other light stuff.
Im using Bios ver. 1.00.007 with stock firmware. Temps when idleing in windows is CPU: 34°C GPU: 35°C, browsing and other light work CPU: 34-40°C same for GPU, gaming CPU and GPU slightly under 60°C. The hardware having highest temperature will in my case be the harddrive, which seems to be between 50-60°, mostly in the 55° region. Atm CPU is 34° and HD 50°, having fans running at very low speeds -
I am surprised how some people can say it`s not noisy. IT IS damn it.
And it`s because of a higher fan speed than necessary when doing basic stuff. I could run everything (CPU,GPU) at 45C and it would be perfectly OK, and it could be done with 30% fan speed.
Those who say it`s not noisy, wait a few days/weeks. I only started noticing it when I had to use it for studying or in quiet halls. And man, was I ever embarassed.
Sager was supose to release a new firmware. No word still.... -
Day 2 here for me..while it is louder than other notebooks it don't bother me at all...I actually like running the fans on high when i'm doing stuff lol
I guess i'm just use to loud desktops and 360. -
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
I have followed up with Sager and the new firmware is still in the works.
We shouldn't discredit peoples opinions if they feel it is not noisy. On the contrary people maybe surprised that there are comments stating its too noisy.Myself having used the 579x daily since release don't find the fans noisy when using the FN+3 firmware.
-
I`m not discreditting, and it may be quieter in the 5793 version, one which I`ve not experienced, but all 5791 users can attest it is noisy. And I can definitely go with a lower fan speed since my older model, the 5791 was not so well designed as the 5793 one.
I clean my notebook regularly, the temps are more than OK, so the only reason for them to be noisier is because they run faster than they should while doing basic stuff.
I don`t even remember how many times I`ve repeated this, and it`s starting to get bothersome...
I really apreciate Sager`s work on this, and that`s why I always provide feedback and suggestions, in order to get all 579x users happy,.0,.1,.2 and .3 alltogether. -
Im just speaking from my point of view and tbh, mine dosent ramp that often, and thats where its noisy and no doubt that it sounds like a desktop when doing so. But where mine normally runs (would guess 30%), if not doing to much, browsing ect., it dosent really ramp that often (atleast mine, but its also a T7500 in the "extreme casing", I bet that could have something to do with it), and when it does, its for a second to 50-70% max "volume", not the crasy dustcleaner noice it does when powering up anything a bit demanding...
But as BMW315i says, its louder than most notebooks...
Have there ever been a comparison between this and another notebook ?? Else i could do one before returning my Xi1546... -
I`ve compared it to the 9260 and an HP nx9420 .
My conclusions were that the 9260 IS MUCH QUIETER , whereas the HP was dead silent, absolutely no fan noise when browsing. But the fan is on a very low rpm, cause I can hear it when putting my ear next to it.
The 579x has the capacity to be quiet. It`s all in the fan speed, if not the fans themselves(I`m talking fan replacement program here...) -
I wouldn't say it is noisy per se but I think it's louder than most laptops yes. and eleron is frustrated because it doesn't need to be that loud. the fans increase in speed at times that it really is not necessary... like opening IE, or just multitasking simple apps. it's too sensitive
-
Oh, very smart answer, I guess it took you some to come up with it.
From "frustration" to customer demanding top notch support when paying 2.5k$ for a laptop is a long way buddy. If you don`t follow the news, step off.
This thread is about the fan firmware and updates, not people who know nothing about asking for that they paid for. -
i wasn't trying to attack you. sorry you took my choice of words like that. i was actually trying to help your cause in making the 579x a more comfortable laptop in a quiet/study setting -
Well, it`s just that when I refer to this fan noise, I`m pretty much speaking in everyone`s best interest. I mean, sure, it`s a gaming laptop , it`s noisy, but it should be like that only when gaming. Otherwise, as I said, I got 2.5k $ screaming pair of fans
I didn`t mean to jump the gun, I probably misunderstood -
I definitely follow you guys in that the fans are way to sensitive and the ramping in the first place seems quite unnessary. When there will be a final firmware out, ill need to get my hands in it, no doubt. This notebook should have the cooling capabilities of being quiter than it is atm, when under lightwork
But must admit, that when i stod, having to get a new notebook, i was nearly scared off by people screaming up that it is to loud :S
And I dont find it to be that much of a biggie, as some other does, but then again, im not sitting in a library or quite places using the comp -
Where can I find them ?
I would like to have other 5791 users report the BIOS version they're actually using, and if it's the one that came with the machine or if they had to upgrade...
Thanks for your replies -
you dont need to update your bios if nothing is wrong with your laptop.
we (8800MGTX M57RU) had to because when we changed drivers it downclocked our cards.
Updating your bios is risky, a bad flash and its major problems. -
I am not sure the fan problems can be solved by BIOS alone. The problem, at least to a certain extent, is the airflow within the laptop which is quite limited. When the GPU fan is set to rotate at low speed (with the latest BIOS) there is a low buzzing noise coming from the notebook, which is quite distracting as well.
Anandtech has made some comments regarding the comparison between M1730 and 5792, with M1730 being much quieter. -
-
I wonder if the 5760 was just as noisy...or is this new platform just prone to noise, or the fans are crap. If I will have this laptop at least one more year, I`ll definitely do something to replace the fans permanently. Even if it cost 200$, I don`t care anymore, I want it quieter.
Wonder how the new firmware will turn out... -
The 5760 (M570U) was pretty quiet... because of the smaller fans... as compared to the slightly larger fans on the M570RU.
It had only one Fan Toggle (Fn+F2)... which the other notebooks of the same generation had.... that was all that was needed.
We realized that gaming notebooks were a new thing, and just having a Fan Toggle was cool enough, screw the extra dB that comes out when you have performance oozing out the sturdy chassis. -
Nonetheless , it`s a laptop and I use it as such. If it were only for gaming, I would`ve bought a super fast desktop . So I want it quiet so I can work on my diploma!
