Sager has confirmed with Clevo that the M860TU will not support 44W+ processors or the 9800M GTX because of the thermal budget!

Well Clevo has been known to be very finnicky with the way they design their laptops/chassis so I'm pretty sure they took the thermal content into consideration considering all that power packed into a 15" isnt easy, the only other laptop to compare to is the m15x and look at those temps. Their GPU idle temps are my load temps, and my CPU load is lower then their cpu idle :D

yes, and therefore we will not see the 9800GTX or the 44W proc in here.

Just my 2cents, that's not really a viable comparison at all.
You have a 17-incher, which always has more space for heat dissipation and better cooling. To compare your temps with one of a high-end 15incher is, well, pointless. Apples to oranges, as the old saying goes.

That being said, I certainly hope that the Clevo succeeds in cooling where the m15x has clearly failed.

I wasn't comparing the temps i was just referencing the big temp differences between the two systems to show how Clevo usually takes thermals into consideration.

If something is offered by Clevo, does that automatically mean that Sager will also offer it?

Not necessarily. Clevo builds for the US, European and Asian markets each of which have different desires in what they want to see in a laptop.

How do the desires of those markets differ? I'm really curious.

For my part I want my laptop to come with a pet meerkat but no manufacturer has ever paid any attention to my wish.

That's 'cause, as a market of one, you don't have sufficient buying power; however, through the miracle of the internet and "zombies" you might be able to masquerade as millions if you give it a try - then meerkats will come as standard, nonnegotiable accessories. :D

No, that`s because meerkats are smaller than some power bricks and people might mistake them for something else. :D

Donald - thanks. Looking forward into your crystal ball :))), do you expect the m860tu to continue Sager/Clevo's good track record with thermal solutions, particularly if it does come with the 8800GTX?

    Absolutely :)

You see, that is the whole point. Sager/Clevo will not release the NP8660 (M860TU) until they are secure in knowing they can warrant the product for 3 years.

What you have to be careful of is rogue vendors that will try to use components that are not certified by Sager/Clevo in the Clevo barebones in an attempt to get a temporary marketing advantage, and then when you go back to them for warranty support...guess what...they have disappeared just like so many other rogue vendors that we have seen come and go over the years.

Are there any "non-rogue" vendors in the UK? How can we know whether the products offered are certified? When and where will the final specs of the M860TU be released?

ATi has a ways to go before they start salivating...lets see if for the first time in years a card from them can actually perform well, and for a significant time period, before their glands start sweating.

Have you seen what has happened to AMD stock in the last couple of years??? It is down to $5.29 from over $40 in early 2006

I hope most people class Kobalt as "non rogue" :)

The final specs on the 860TU will be released on the 14th July when the Montevina NDA clears. I think the best way to judge whether a company offers certified products is to look at how they act under these sort of circumstances. I'm not that familiar with what's happening in N. America but our situation is that we as a company have too much to loose by ruining our relationships with Intel and NVIDIA to be a "rogue" vendor. The problem for us is not that we will loose sales because people will pre order with "rogue" companies in Europe but that it removes confidence from the consumer which affects resellers like ourselves.

On the thermal solution track record I see no reason to doubt CLEVOs ability. If you buy a car, stick a turbo under the hood and the engine overheats you don't blame the chassis, you blame the turbo.............

EDIT RE NVIDIA: I agree with Donald ^ we all want competition in GPUs and CPUs to drive development and consumer choice but recently ATi haven't really been in the same league. Yes they are competative in the middle of the market but outright performance and more inportantly every day use/driver & game support it's an NVIDIA win hands down. It'll be interesting to see how this unfolds when all the new benchmarks are released to the public....

i agree in the laptop department nvidia has been way ahead but in the desktop department ATI is puting alot of pressure on nvidia with they new release of the 4800 GPU's because they have really good price/performance $. and it seems atleast these cards are geting better in the real world game performance. dont get me wrong im a nvidia fanboy and have been for a while but i like how ATI is mading it a good race out of. These are the first cards for awhile that i would think of buying in my desktop.

I believe there are plenty of silent fans out there, my Dell has huge fans and they`re incredibly quiet for a gaming laptop even when cooling it from high temps.

I have finally done it! I canceled my order with PCMW and will be making an order for the np5796 from xoticpc very soon. Thanks for encouragement and discouragement in all the right areas. And thank you to Paladin who was the first to post the fact that my dreams were coming to an end. (with the 9800m GTX in the 15.4") lol.

I don't think that's the link. I checked it out and it seems like the old NP5793. I was asking about the NP5796 mentioned above (aka-Clevo M570TU).

Does anyone have any idea what the NP5796 will look like? Will it have the same design as the previous model?

If you scroll down to about the middle of the page you will see the announcement:
    " 7/2/08 UPDATE:
Recently we have been receiving an unexpected volume of NP5793 (M570RU) orders that has exceeded our inventory volume. The 5793 will be replaced by the NEW NP5796 with the latest Intel chipset, processor technology, DDR3/1066MHz memory added ESATA and HDMI Ports, beginning the week of July 14th.

Any orders placed now will be filled with the new NP5796 with an equally matched configuration and your price will be guaranteed...unless the new release pricing is lower in which case you will get the lower price!

Current NP5796 ETA is the week of July 14th, Orange trim only."

The case design will be slightly different to accommodate the new HDMI and eSATA ports, among other small changes. Pictures will be available once it is launched on July 15th.

The 5796 will have the same physical exterior look with the exception of a added HDMI and ESATA Ports. I linked you to this page because you will notice the following note:

This means if you order the 5793 now, you will be moved over the the new NP5796. Due to Intel NDA, we are unable to list the 5796 and its full specifications until the morning of July 15th.

The Sager NP8660 (M860TU) is not going to replace the NP2092.

The Sager NP8660 will be in a class of its own.

Another model will replace the NP2092.

Well I'm pretty sure they took heat as a high priority issue, since the m15x had so many problems being 15" laptop with 8800mgtx. The question is does the laptop sacrifice noise for good cooling. The 1 fan i guess means that it is a pretty strong and powerful fan. so lets hope its one of the quieter ones.

    True.
    But I want actual values.
The m15x hits 80-90C on a constant basis with 1 CARD!

My XPS hits 75C just because Dell programed the fans to kick in at that speed, but under load they max out at around 68-69C. And it`s SLI !

Well the Dell is a much larger laptop than the m15x and m860tu are going to be. Its much harder to install cooling in the smaller space/frame even including SLI.
