aight, sounds good.

f**k 102C in grid, i'll buy a cooler
-
an update on my temps after flaying to home
max is 83 for GTAIV @660-1000-1650
even with 10c more it's still stable at those speeds -
f*ck f*ck i'm in stock clocks. i can't wait to get the cooler and the make the heatsink overhaul
-
you may need to bite the bullet and send yours in...
-
sending in for me cost the same that buy another gtx280m i'll do the best i can, raising the bottom 1'' the gpu temps in grid reach 94, 8C less so a cooler will do something more i hope. i'll study heat transfer again and design something for the heatsink if that works i'll write a post about it xD
-
where are you located at?
and it might not just be the card..it could be something like a capacitor on the motherboard, but if your force to weather it out...then i hope the best for you. -
have you checked the Thermal paste?( sorry if already asked)
-
yes there are a lot of factors that could be the problem, i have 1 year warranty and the overhaul that i'm planing to do can be reversed. i live in colombia. and yes MR. Moo i put as5 in the heatsink. nothing happened
in contrast the cpu temps are awesome. 29-30 idle and 58 max runing a stress test -
ok well then it seems to be HW related
best of luck -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
I still think you should send it in for warranty work, jupapri.
-
yes soviet i know. i'll contact sager and then look how can i manage to send this in a cheap way. if i have to rma this to sager i have to send it with the original box? what are the conditions for a rma?
-
How is this card compared to 8800GTS ? Worth an upgrade ?
sorry search is not working properly again, so I have to ask, ty -
-
i just contact xoticpc, maybe there is th option to send the gpu only, i'm waiting the answer from them.
by the way,i want to say thank you very much to all the people in this forum that helped me a lot in this problem (john, soviet, mr moo, gophn etc) the nbr forums are the best support. -
oficial answer from the xoticpc support. they can set up a cross ship so i have to send them my gpu and receive a new one. thats what i call an oustanding support.

I agree. 10char

I'm getting a max temp of 83 Celcius after playing a lot of COD4, is this a normal temp (completely stock clocks on GPU)?
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Those are high temperatures for factory clocks. Take some time to wipe off all the boatload of AS5 that Sager generously dumped on your GPU and properly apply new thermal paste of your choice.
-
well crysis in my lap with the fans full reach 95C, grid 103C, the core can tolerate 108C but the real problem is the memory. i think 83C is a litle high with stock cloks. please change the thermal compound because when i removed the heatsink there was a lot of compund. less is better
-
update, I hit 94 now after playing half life 2, episode 2. I only recently started monitoring temps, after noticing stuttering in COD4. I have rubbing alcohol and AS5, will opening up my computer void my warranty?
-
just dont break anything. -
-
-
but you can also use it to remove thermal paste and other gunk/guck -
I should probably re-apply OCZ myself, I'm getting an 87C high in GTA4 off the cooler. Yeah I'm overclocked and overvolted, but it's warm nonetheless.
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
yeah it is. run occt and see what you get. do it for 20mins that should really heat up your gpu.
-
Hi everybody, so I opened up my computer, popped off the heatsink, and I found this;
The pictures really don't do it justice, there was a preposterous amount of some unknown thermal substance spilling out over the sides of the gpu. The second picture is the most telling, there's a little castle of stuff on the heatsink, a small thermal paste fortress with little thermal paste towers.
Took me the better part of an hour to get it all off and apply OCZ paste, new max temperature is 81 Celsius after 2.5 hour session of COD4.
EDIT: New 3D Mark 06 score on stock CPU and stock GPU clocks;

thats a lot of gunk.... definitely clean that up when you see it like that.
who is taught to do that in the factory when putting these things together.... they need to be re-trained. -
My GPU had the same wonderful amount of paste on it when I opened it up. Took forever to clean it up.

That sure looks like Sager's handywork to me. It's like a cake factory conveyor belt. The GPU's are the cakes and the thermal paste is the filling.
Nothing that a little bit of Arcticlean can fix up. -
I opened mine up last night to check for that. Mine actually had a correct amount of thermal paste on it so unfortunately I'm still left unable to play games due to overheating and GPU crashes.
=/ -

phifer. The way you phrased that sounded like you took off your heatsink to check the paste and immediately put the heatsink back on.
-
phifer if you want to play without crashes remove the bottom of the laptop, that way you can reduce 15C. it seems that i'm not the only one that received a gpu from hell
-
-
this thing with the paste really isn't rocket science stuff guys...
dab a tiny bit on then smooth it out with a finger and your done.
the reason why you find the factory stuff looking rather crazy is because it's really not them..the heat sinks usually come with it already on it. (just like all the new desktop chip/heat sink setups come from the factory) and all they do is attach it. the heat does the rest...( only with the 9800m/260/280 series...don't know about the other ones..(speculation of course)
-
Its bizzare how you guys are getting such high temperatures compare to my Sager NP8660. I just installed the GTX 280m on mine and so far the highest temp I get is 83 playing Crysis for a couple hours. Usually its around 77-80 playing any other games for a long time. I had also noticed the big goober of excessive thermal paste put on from the factory when I took the card apart from the heatsink. I had thought to myself that there had to be a bunch of newbies putting these together because it was ridiculously done.

Hey H-Emmanuel, is the driver you're using currently the best one so far for you? I am on 186.03 but for some reason I can not overclock above 950 memory. I wonder if its the driver you are using.
-
-
Oh okay, I mess around with it and see how far it can go. Thanks^

Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
What are your core and shader clocks?
-
-
Am I doing this wrong? Very high is at 37.03 average fps!
-
Btw. what laptop do you have, what cpu, ram..? -
1920x1080 res...
-
I was thinking he doesnt have the 1920x1200 panel to run it at 1080 , but i will say if those numbers are correct at 1680 in DX10 thats very impressive for a single card @very high.

By the way, have you ever tried playing on battery with your GTX280m in the M860ETU. For some reason when I do so, I play for maybe a minute or less and then the PC shuts off because the laptop draws too much power from the battery; the culprit is that the battery is rated at 14.8v while the AC adapter provides 20.0v If you were willing to, I would be thankful if you could just try once on "High performance" power plan to shoot up a game on battery (make sure in your power settings that nothing prevents either the CPU or GPU from operating at 100%) and tell me if the computer switches off.
