3.6.., Sure it cost an arm and a leg, but what the hay. I wont buy another machine for 3-5 years.![]()
For 2.2K you can get a nice 6990M 15" Clevo with a good sized SSD.

Yeah I was think of that or a p170hm with 2 HyperX SSD in RAID 0-TRIM support coming soon- I'll already have ultrabook for basic development/web/reading so I don't need anything in between
.
I'm going to wait till at least the end of CeBIT/GDC to decide, but I'm feeling pretty confident that Ivy Bridge/GCN will be releasing at the latest -April, and I can wait a month, but anything longer and I will be hesitant to wait, my 4820tg is getting really slow for my needs, and gets hot during intensive tasks and the fan is very annoying. -

With all of the rumblings about nvidia re-badges.. and NO news on GCN parts.. i figured..with Mass Effect 3 Hitting on Tuesday.. and all of the other stuff to worry about on new product launches, bugs, issues.. And Price.. I figured 6+ months would be the minimum for buying a new machine with everything i wanted..
Now was kind of the best time for a new machine for me. I figure the M18X has been run through the paces by now, all of the new drivers solve 99% of the problems and the prices are low enough to enjoy a few extra hundred in my pocket for games and accessories. -
Anyone seen this pic before?
-
Yes
charlie had posted that a while back
-
That came out sometime in the Q4 of last year.
-
hehe ok. I just saw it for the first time now. I am slow

Speaking of which, Radeon 7800 series specs/slides were leaked:
AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series Specs. Table Leaked | techPowerUp
Pit Cairn specs : 7800 series revealed
Another note of interest (found in the 3dcenter.org thread link) is that the 7870 and 7850 consumed 114w and 98w respectively during the benchmark runs provided. Good news if these dies end up in mobile parts. -
lets hope those benchmark wattage values are true, instead of the 178W (7870) and 130W (7850) listed on the leaked AMD slide
-

I really think AMD is going to take the Win this round of GPUs.. with their thermal envelope, they will find their way into a LOT more devices than NVIDIA this year.
-
heres some more info on the 7800 series:
AMD HD 7800 ????????? | VR-Zone ???
especially interesting the confirmation of the typical wattages, indicating that a downclocked 7850 would be an ideal candidate for a mobile 7000 series GPU. looking at the posted benchmarks comparing the 7850 with the 560 Ti id say we could hope for a high-end AMD mobile card thats at least as fast as a desktop 560 Ti, probably 5-10% faster
cheers -
There were actual game benchmarks done on 78x0 posted on semiaccurate, and the difference was no where near what that article claims.
-
lol looks like standard AMD slides where they atleast multiply the real score with a factor of 1.5
-
i figured these benchies would have to be taken with a grain of salt ^^ but still, even if half of the perf boost over the 560 Ti could be achieved it would make for a heck of a mobile GPU
cheers -
Well atleast Amd is moving us in the right direction, unlike the mysteriously perplexing, yet inevitably disappointing Fermi rebrands Nvidia is spewing out. Although these benchmarks are grossly bloated it has given us hope that our mobile Amd GCN might overtake the 560ti, so thanks Jaybee
-
Yup, can`t wait to see that cute little 7970M. And if 60-70W, sold
-

-
good to hear that.. hopefully the drivers work nice and fine..!

AMD Radeon HD 7850 & HD 7870 2 GB Review - Page 24/30 | techPowerUp
Enjoy!
Looks like the 7870 will need very little tweaking to become 7970M (assuming 90W TDP). This will also mean that the price of the 7970M will be close to that of the 7870.
Good times. -
nice find! but i think theyd rather use the 7850 specs since it fits perfectly into the 100W thermal envelope without any tweaking whatsoever
in any way, this is gonna be an absolutely AWESOME card with an approximate perf boost of 20% as compared to the 580M
based on the following assumptions:
485M = 460 desktop 768 MB + 10% = 580M
460 desktop 768 MB + 30 % = 7850 desktop
thus: 580M + 20% = 7850 desktop
assuming an OC to 7870 specs is possible ud even be able to reach +30-35% compared to an 580M
cant wait!
cheers -
Yeah, but the 7870 is full core while the 7850 is a trimmed down version.
I like full cores. -
haha, who doesnt? ^^ so how about 7970M trimmed down and 7990M full core version?
cheers -
I mean, if AMD wants to, they can basically mobilize a near fully powered 7870.
And look at that performance. Does anyone from the "10-20%" crew want to change sides?
-
Yeah, I mean, I haven't seen mobile GPU cards getting close to desktop GPU cards (in terms of performance) ever since the 8000M series.
Die-shrinks FTW! -
so perf gain with a full 7850 would be like +40%? holy crap....
-
If they tweak it just right, yeah.. with room to overclock too. . that would be sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeett
-
Sorry if this is a dumb question (or the wrong place for it) but I am relatively new to the world of gaming computers...but how much would it usually cost to upgrade from current cards to these next gen ones?
I ask because I want to get a new computer and want to know if I should wait. -
Anthony@MALIBAL Company Representative
They aren't released yet, but if they follow the pricing of current cards it would be $500+ for the new card. The 6990m is around $500 and the 580m was closer to $750. The next gen cards will probably be in the same neighborhood, if I had to guess.
-
The first thing you should consider when you are about to purchase a laptop for gaming is can you wait for any component refresh, and is the performance gain worth the extra price. If you have the extra money i would wait for ib and the new gpu's. However if you are short on cash this may be the right time to get a new rig at a good price.
-
Anywhere from $400-700 depending on how powerful the model is you would upgrade to. Also you would be able to sell your "old" card to recoup some of the losses. I would highly advise buying a laptop with old tech in it now with the plan of upgrading later on, if in the coming month the next gen refreshes will be available anyways. Also its not the easiest thing ever to hunt down top tier MxM Gpu cards followed by installing them properly and then selling off your old card. It requires patience and effort and usually only dedicated extremists go to such lengths, however NBR is great community filled with these type of people, so atleast we would be there to help you
Note that the Next Gen Mobile Cpu Ivy Bridge will almost certainly be incompatible with current motherboards.
TLDR; dont buy a new laptop now if you want next gen hardware, wait a bit and expand your options.
Btw this is in regards to a gaming laptop, Desktops is another matter entirely, I'm just assuming that -
Yeah, sorry I was referring to a laptop. I should have been more specific (dense of me). And thanks for the info. I realize they are not out yet but I thought that past pricing would be a place to start for an idea of what to expect.
-
Any news when we will be getting new news aboutthe upcoming 7xxx cards ?
Im looking to replace the 460m sli with radeon 7xxx 28nm 75W to 100W cards.
I dont know if i will need but i think i will, a bios update for these to work.
Does anyone know how are we suppose to get the said bios updates ? -

AnandTech - AMD Clarifies 7000M Strategy -
TPB there really aren't any newer updates for a possible release? Thats 2 months old now.. Dang we really have been left in the dark for an unduly amount of time!
-
nothing "unduly" about that, AMD/Nvidia are always pretty ominous and shut up when it comes to their nextgen mobile gpu series.
cheers -
HD7970M is expected by the end of June...no other details, yet.
-
ps. daamnnni want something by May, seriouslssllyy awww
-
-
Oh, c'mon AMD... at least give us some 660M Kepler (as stock config) so people can switch to 7970M or 680M later on! The wait is never over)
-
But atleast now we know when to expect it. Thanks man -
Hopefully puts me in a good spot to get a 7990 since I won't be able to buy until the end of Aug/beginning September
assuming its allows for switchable graphics
-
Guess if 680m follows suit I may just get a Clevo ultraportable to keep me going, ,I really wanna dump this Acer 4820tg.

The Chart i have here, has it listed as coming out in December, around the 21st.

hahaha, good one!

I understand that competition for Nvidia is needed, but why right away buy cards from AMD?
