Dual core probably would be a option when it is released, but I don't see the price would be discounted much to worth the downgrade.

Alternate perspective:I code a lot and use a 24" on my desktop at work and more frequently a 13" VAIO Z. I don't really notice a difference one way or the other.

I agree that as only a course-taking CS student there is no real advantage to go full voltage over ULV. However imagine if you are ambitious and join a research program with a professor. My students are in physics and when I throw them Mathematica problems then the full voltage can come in really handy. So it really depends what level student you are and what exactly you are doing.

Uhm sorry for the SSD question again but can someone tell me why Plextor M5Ms have this "cache" thingy while Crucial and Intel doesn't list/have that

That's what I want to know.. Plextor M5M 128GB, under specs it lists 256MB as cache.. I know hard drives need cache but SSDs? Also no other SSD brands have anyting like that listed

SSD do need cache, some use dram cache, some us over-provisioning (e.g. Intel 525, over provisioning 7%, hence the 256GB come out as 240GB).

Flash is pretty fast, but it's not incredibly fast, and there also needs to be some processing done before the data given to the drive gets stored in the chips so as to reduce wear and tear. As such, all SSDs just like HDDs have a bit of very fast RAM on board. In the olden days when SSDs had 32-64MB of cache it was worth paying attention to as more cache meant less stuttering (where you'd write too much data and suddenly the drive would be incredibly slow as you waited for the cache to be written into the flash). These days all SSDs come with 128MB-1GB of cache so you don't have to worry about it any more.

TL;DR Ignore cache, everything has enough to be super-fast.

    1080p in 13 inch screen...

How small are the text going to be on that thing?

I am currently shopping for a small laptop since I got a 17 inch DTR laptop (G750). I have few choices it seems. Lenovo Y410 and this one. I"d love to have 1600 x 900 instead of 1080p.

HT posted a pic of his screen with some text on it.

It's going to be small, so you'll have to take that into consideration. It's not the most pixel-packed screen out there though. The Surface Pro is 1080p at only 10.1". That tablet scales text and UI elements to 150% to make it more readable. If you wanted, you could do the same thing on the W230ST.

In any case, does any retailer know if the quad core i7's can be replaced by the dual core i7's (the 28W i7-4558U)? Do they share the same socket? If it's possible, will anyone be offering it (or willing to do it non-officially?) Thanks!

edit2: Actually looks like the i7-4558U releases Q3, so it might have to wait til Sept.

edit3: Comparing package size on Intel's site:
    i7-4700MQ: 37.5mm x 37.5mm x 4.7mm
    i7-4558U: 40mm x 24mm x 1.5mm

looks like the 4558U won't fit in the same socket as the 4700MQ sadly.

Also, from what I can tell the 4700MQ doesn't support VT-d, but it does at least have VT-x. The 4800MQ has both.

True, but I'm wondering in the context of battery life as a full volt dual core is more than enough for my needs whereas the laptop runs a tad bit too hot and batt life's a little too short.

True, although most courses try to keep hardware limitations very low since not everyone can afford the most expensive stuff, but there are those who do need it though.

There are many 12-13" 1080p laptops out there, look at the Dell XPS 12, XPS 13, Asus Zenbooks, Sony Vaio Pro at your local BestBuy/Fry's/Microcenter/Windows Store/Sony Store, etc.

Actually Windows 8 uses vector graphics (iirc) so the icons and metro interface should scale to 13" just nicely. As for text, like someone said before, you can set the DPI scaling to 125% or 150% even.

I don't find FHD comfortable even on 15 inch. And I prefer 720p on 14 inch. I am looking at 750m at least with a quadcore with size of 11inch to 14inch. Y410 has its own issues that I need to consider. I've also looked at Sony's offerings. I don't think Sony laptops would be easy to maintain though. (aka opening up and cleaning fans).

If you really like this laptop then I'm sure you'd be able to find a 720p screen to replace it with, and sell your screen to someone who wants a spare or eventually breaks theirs.

I don't know whether I like this laptop. I am, for now, simply comparing pros and cons of selections I have. I wish I could take a look at a display model but I can't find anything that's remotely similar as this one. Futureshop and bestbuy in Canada display only cheap models with non-1080p. There are sometimes few 15/17 inch with FHD screens, but that's not what I am looking for.

The thing is cooling a quad-core mobile CPU (45w-ish) with 765m (50-75w-ish) with a single fan. It's going to get hot no matter what you do. But a good design will prevent the heat from reaching you, and that is what should be happening with this laptop.

+1 please log some temps, would appreciate that

I want to know if I can expect the same FPS as my W110ER @ 1366x768 on BF3 medium @ 1080P (given the bump in GPU and CPU).

Did you see my video? I limited FPS to 58 and it never went below 58 using high settings. Without limiting it, it averaged about 68FPS with high settings.

    Guys,

I picked up a Notepal U1, U2, and I have a Cool Master 120mm notebook cooler and swapped the fan around so it blows air into the laptop and here are the idle results. I am going to do some load testing tonight, wasn't feeling well after I got home last night and never got a chance to do any gaming:

Haswell 4800 undervolted at 1.24V Core Voltage
No notebook cooler idle temps 54C
    U1 idle temp 47C
    U2 idle temp 45C
120MM Notebook cooler with fan blowing air downwards 54C
120MM Notebook cooler with fan blowing air upwards 47C

Overall you can see these are pretty dramatic results. I think the U2 does a tad better than the others because you can place the fans where you want and I have one blowing air directly into the stock fan and one blowing in the vent holes on the other side.

If you have a notebook cooler that blows air upwards I highly recommend you use it with this laptop. Another big plus outside the temp difference is it also makes it so the palm rest and the keys on the right side so they are not warm to touch which was one of my biggest complaints with the laptop.

    Hmm. Nice results.

But as far as the palm rest, even when the CPU was running 90C the palmrest was never uncomfortable and measured 35C. The UIOPJKL; keys were about 45C, but when gaming you rarely ever use those keys, the left side of the keyboard was less then 35C as well, and palmrest on left was only about 30-32C.

    Hi,

Would you mind sharing some pictures of what the notebook looks like on top of each of those coolers? Just wanted to get an idea of how big the coolers are, and how much of the laptop gets "covered"/ventilated/lifted :)

    Thanks!

Sounds like you're describing the W110er. It's even trading at crazy discounts right now, considering the hardware in it is still *very* current compared to most of the competition.

All I could find was used ones. Do retailers still carry them?

Haswell is supposed to have big improvement for battery life compared to the 3rd generation though. CPU speed wise, it's just so-so, but battery life counts for laptops of this size.

The battery life improvements really only affect the ULV CPU's. Not the full voltage ones.

Try to contact Mythlogic, they may have some W110ER's left. They are a Clevo builder so manage their own product.

Agreed with Wingnut on this, the battery life improvements on full voltage CPUs are... disappointing tbh.

As for retailers, since you're in Canada you should probably try Eurocom, I think they're based there too and they seem to have stock.

Guys, try to look up threads about Eurocom here at NBR before buying from them, I and many others have had horrific experiences with this company. It is really best to avoid them. As for Reflex Notebook, I highly recommend them. I bought my W110ER from them and the experience was great.

Could buy it without a CPU and buy a 4702 separately, depending on how urgent it is. But yes, this is great news! Any word on whether you're getting Chi Mei or AUO panels Scott? Now I've gotta work out whether to buy now or wait and see if anyone does it cheaper, or gives a longer warranty... oh wait, no money until september, problem solved :D

plus don't European prices usually already include vat? While us and Canadian don't usually add sales/use tax until the final order submission.

Looks awesome. I think I'll either go with the U2 or the X-Slim one: Amazon.com: Cooler Master NotePal X-Slim Ultra-Slim Laptop Cooling Pad with 160mm Fan (R9-NBC-XSLI-GP): Computers & Accessories

EDIT: Think I'm gonna go with the U2 because the fans can be repositioned to aim at the cpu vent, whereas on the X-Slim, not sure if the fan will actually "hit" the cpu vent. Also, this video makes a really good case for the U2 cuz of the convenience of how you can reposition the fans without tools, lol: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBZFLHUmROE.

I see in the Intel specs for the i7-4X00MQ chips, it shows that 3 video ports are supported. Does anyone know if you can drive TWO external monitors in addition to the LCD using the VGA AND the HDMI ports?

I do this on my NP7280, but I have to run one of the monitors using a USB--> VGA adapter and it not fast enough for video.

Does anyone know why the two UK resellers currently listing the system aren't offering the intel ac wireless? I'm guessing it's just not been added to the configuration pages, but I find it strange that they both have the same option missing.
