The major change will come with Ivy not Sandy B.![]()
So there are some interesting possibilities @22nm, we might get surprised.
But as many agreed, current x7200 buyers are safe for a couple of years.
On the CPU side, the upcoming 990X will be the top horse till the end of 2011, then it will be tocked down a notch![]()
On the GPU side nothing is certain. There are rumors of a new MXM in works and if it appears with Sandy and the next gen AMD/Nvidia lands there - x7200 becomes obsolete, more or less. This may happen already in March or as late as Ivy Bridge. And though the beast will still be capable of running most games @max, the gap might be bigger than just a regular 10%.![]()
Just my 2 cents of course.
-
X7200 uses the MXM3.0B+, which is the newest MXM standard that can already supply 100W for a slot, not sure if they are going to have MXM4.0 or something that soon.
-
+ is not making it new, I think it's just a little "marketing" extra, since 100W GPU's are here for at least 1 year (FX3800M).
Sandy B is coming with PCI express 3.0, there might be a reason for a new MXM type. I can try to verify this info for sure. -
If you look on MXM's website you will notice that now there is a MXM 3.0 revision 1.1. I think that's the MXM 3.0+.
There might be a new revision with the introduction of PCI-E 3.0 next year with Sandy Bridge. -
^^ exactly my point
-
Please do try to verify the info.
By this time most of Intel's partners including Clevo should have some information on upcoming MXM revisions due to SB. Although the best place to ask is MXM-sig ( MXM Graphics Module. Shame they only allow corporate members in.

Here a little Metro 2033 Benchlist
I only look at the markedplace, because it's less work for me and it also shows low fps, other areas rise the fps round 10fps also while moving. Hope it's helpfull:

Thanks alot for the metro numbers, this game even makes a good desktop huff and puff.

Toms Hardware did a decent comparison between 5870 (single and cf) and a single GTX 480m all in an x8100.
Mobility Radeon Vs. GeForce M: The CrossFire Advantage : A Leopard That Changes Its Spots
Give it a read if interested. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Also, from reading that article, I have to wonder, would GTX 480m SLI work in an x8100? Of course the power supply will be a choke point, but aside from that. The cooler used in the x7200 is a single slot design meaning that the dual slot design used in the x8100 is not necessarily needed.
-
That's what I'm afraid of. If they put out a new MXM in 2011 (presumably for the geforce 5xx), the x7200 will lose the GPU upgradability in a year unless I swap a new motherboard.
-
-
Mobile versions of Kepler will probably not be availiable until later 2011 though. I can't wait that long... So I am hopelessly hoping that Kepler will still be MXM 3.0b so I can upgrade it..
-
I seriously doubt there will be any huge performance increase even if it possible. It makes the most economical sense for nvidia to produce cards that are just enough to beat ATI by 10-20%, even if their new architecture is great, they will start with low clock/shader etc and slowly ramp it up to squeeze the most out of it.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
And kepler does sound strong for notebook as their focus seems to not be raw performance but rather increased performance per watt. Given the strict power budget in notebooks that is very promising. I remember when Intel took this approach....they put out the Core architecture and have been ahead ever since -

And btw, just checked the numbers - 480M is only 20-40 times faster than a 6 year old MR9700
It's nowhere near 600x
And whoa, look here - 6 years and only 6x performance -
after reading the comparison I think the 8100 with ati cf is a hell of a peice of equipment for a great price. I saw a few people complaining about drivers but I think thats fixed, correct me if I am wrong.
This maybe a good machine for my son -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Those were my thoughts on the new x8100 as well, it also offers USB 3.0. Let's not forget it is a hell of alot cheaper lol
The ONLY things I do not like about that laptop:
Stupid gaming buttons...wasted space that should have gone to a proper numpad layout
Awful CPU cooling compared to what they have for the desktop processors (just wasted space)
Every surface is a mirror(bad for fingerprints)
-
I do agree its an awesome deal and performs well. Slip it into a more plain jain case.
I am wondering if the 480M will perform much better in games as the cpu advantage is minimal in games. This scares me after plonking down 5k and see a machine almost as good for half. OUCH ! -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
The 480m will do better in games because it has an architectural advantage. It will not be enough to justify the price difference, but it will be better (best possible in a laptop in the world right now)
-
You can always grab a new Asus 73JW with 460M and OC it almost to the same level, an amazing machine for under 2k

After seeing all the issues the first G73 had, I am giving them a wide birth for the time being.
-
My JW is flawless and all those issues of the JH are gone
...
Loving it lol.. After having gone through umpteen laptops in the past months i think im a decent judge on good from bad ... -
Quad got one and so far - 0 issues. Silent, cool, powerful, stylish, very good screen, OC'ing potential. What else do you need?

Well that is a comfort to here. Wish they would release an updated version of the W90 for all the dual GPU enthusiasts out there

This thread is about the x7200 my partner ordered on 2 weeks ago and still is being told his will not ship from sager until next Friday then 5 days testing so he has paid his monies and getting nothing for almost 4 weeks. I am not pointing fuingers but it seems sager resellers run on a shoestring budget. Am i wrong in thinking they are just middlemen and dont hold any stock.
This is a great business take the money and ship in 5 weeks. They are running a business with the buyers money. Why is sager selling dual sli on the website when they know full well they have none.
I purchased one also and been told 3- 4 weeks. These sites need build and ship dates plain and clear like dell, hp etc no excuse. -
Overall though im very happy and i just LOVE the image quality in games over the ATI cards ..
So yeah its all good..
I score 7k stock on vantage and with a baby overclock like 7700 ... The 480m stock i believe was around 7900-8100 ? .
The 460 is clocked much higher though in comparison.. -

Shortage would mean alot of people on here or on the web have them.
hes just behind the que.
Needs to be a disclaimer dual 480ms are not shipping until and a date. Its fair business pratice.
I have an order and I dont expect to see it until Mid November, now i see why speedy canceled his. -
He reordered but went with a complete system vs the barebone
...
I honestly doubt it will be mid november and in his case i can only hope its not that long... -

Remember...you can always email or PM Resellers on the latest update for things...
-
Agreed lets hope nothing is wrong with the system on delivery or over first few weeks. If supply is short then replacement will also be short.
Any reseller answer when do you seriously and not guess, Seriously expect to see dual gpu's landing at peoples door. End of October ?
I think alot of units should have been in stock before opening the flood gates. -
Now that the 460M is out (and virtually the rest of the line), does anyone know why we haven't heard anything about the 470M?

Friends don't let friends buy Asus. -
Asus is not always a plastic lunchbox just as AW isn't always a high quality rig.
Things change from time to time. -
For those curious, Tom's Hardware did a comparison of CF 5870 and 480M on the X8100.
Mobility Radeon Vs. GeForce M: The CrossFire Advantage : A Leopard That Changes Its Spots -
I don't trust anything Asus makes, it always has compromises built into the design and those flaws surface eventually in a big way. AW and Clevo are the only two gaming notebooks I trust. -
I guess Toms Hardware has never heard of Aliewnare?Besides, doing a 480m vs Crossfire 5870m comparison is pointless. They should roll out 480m SLi for a fair test.
-
I'd agree with you 6 months ago, as would never buy a HP, but you see?...No regrets here as well.
-
I've owned 3 Asus notebooks (G51 and 2 G60s), NEVER again. I know exactly what Asus is about and it's certainly not quality. Their notebooks are super cheap for a reason. Quad's notebook is still new, let's give it a month to see what happens. Everyone thought the original G73 was roses as well until a month or two later it turned out to be a complete fail. IMO, Clevo has the best reliability of all the gaming notebook brands followed by AW. The rest are crap. -
Its Ok Aikimox that POS G51/G60 that Joker owned with the worst screen ever produced is enough to sour someone for life
..
I am very happy till Sandy Bridge and the new GPUs hit so from now till then its all about this G73 which has just been awesome to use and thats fact...
I find absolutely nothing wrong at all with the build quality other then its not made out of Aluminum ..
But this thread is about the X7200 and not the often hated in the Sager/Alienware forums Asus products..
-
Haha yeah sorry for the OT guys. I think we're all twiddling our thumbs until one of the enthusiasts on NBR gets an X7200 and puts it through the ringer. I wish I had extra cash laying around to grab one.
Oh and Quad, you're right, that damn G51/G60 display did sour me for life. It's one of the biggest reasons I jumped on the M17x when I found out it was going to be released with RGB LED. I mean, just take a look at this Asus POS I had to deal with:
<param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/RgJ6FbZdbn0?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/RgJ6FbZdbn0?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width='480' height="385"></embed></object>Last edited by a moderator: May 6, 2015 -
I wish you had the extra cash as well for the X7200 because this machine needs someone who is going to push it to the limits ..
I know Speedy is going to give it his best but he will probably only stick around for so long with the crazy benching.
That stuff is not for everyone atleast not in the long term...
I saw pics back in the day when you had your Asus and i would cringe looking at them...
My G73 when just booting and the logo spins up does not even have a hair of bleed period and is truly the richest blacks you can find... Its not the brightest like the RGB but man the blacks are insane which translates to some amazing details in game... -
Nobody can have one cause they dont even have themselves. FAIL
x7200 maybe 3 - 4 exist in dual 480ms in the world and I bet all the resellers had to send them back already.
I paid for one and i will OC the hell out of it but it will be november before I see it
X7200 Pre-sale price is here!
