student1, the self install option is for the video card only to be installed on your existing motherboard. It only applies to the NP579x series so no, even if you got the new motherboard or the reworked motherboard it would not support Quad processors

Wow really, hmm almost better just get a second 7950 then and work in sli. too much money if it doesn t even support quads after the upgrade. Are the 7950 still available , might just want one of those then (heck atleast right now its better than 1 8800 ;))

I am sad to report that the GeForce 7950 GTX is no longer available from Sager/Clevo.

However a single GeForce 8800M will outperform twin 7950 GTX cards in SLi

Really, or did the Oracle at Delphi make you sign an NDA, too? (nudge, nudge, , , say n'more, say n'more!).

No NDA, just no information. I think they may be taking the position that it would be difficult to improve on perfection :D At least perfection as we know it today...tomorrow is another horizon.

    Hmmm,
Reading a different thread reminded me of one of my big gripes with my 9260.
    THE BIOS.
So, if we were to get this 8800 upgrade which comes with a Mobo swap out too, then what can you tell us about the mobo bios.
Are there any improvements over the current 9260's in that area?

I understand why they don't want us to overclock etc in bios but I'd like to be able to disable com ports and the modem and ordinary sop stuff like that which should be available but is not (and a lot of other stuff but let's not start up those threads again :) ).

I know that the 570RU gpu swap has issues with sleep mode, but does it have issues with hybernation too?

I really dont care about sleepmode. I am living in spain rightnow and my seller doesnt support this upgrade, but i can buy the card from USA and get it shipped here.

I really dont use sleep or stand by. Only hybernation some times.

just a quick question, probably shows how little i really know about modern notebooks but...

if i were to order the NP9262 with the single 8800 (as the sli units are currently unavailable) can i at any point in the future purchase a second gpu and run an sli configuration? i have been told that generally speaking laptop gpu's are not upgradable/replaceable/etc.

You can add a 2nd 8800GTX to the 9262 at a later time without a problem and utilize SLi. :)

Mallratj1, you ask about "...at any time in the future..." and the answer is yes, in the near future while they are still available. Just don't wait too long because once they are discontinued it will be hard to find one, just like it is almost impossible to find a 7950 GTX now.

Actually, as soon as older sager 579x users begin upgrading their laptops, a lot of 7950gtxs will be available. I know that I will be one among them :D

He's asking about the 8800M, not the 7950. Since we don't know if the 9xx0 series will be compatible with the M570RU, it's a bit risky to hope for 2nd hand parts, isn't it :)

Considering the 7950 had a lifespan of just over 1 Year, I would assume we would be looking at the same for the 8800 for availability.

That was my point also. When MXM laptop users start upgrading, a lot of their gpus will show up for sale. As soon as the 9th series show up, the 8800M GTXs will be for sale and so on...

lordvader, the 7950M has been out since 2006

I was speaking of the time they are released to the time they are no longer being utilized in machines. The 8800 is newly released, so we have some time. :)

Justin is correct, Sager began shipping the 7950 GTX in October of 2006 and continued through December of 2007...14 months, which is about right for the lifespan of any high end video card.

And my point is that you don't know if it will be possible at all to upgrade the current M570RU/D901C (and/or their other versions) from a 7950/8700M/8800M to a 9xx0M. If it is impossible, you won't see any 8800M appearing on ebay/...

Trust me, you will see 8800M GTXs on ebay. Since the demand for them will be pretty high there will always be people selling them, regardless of upgrade capabilities.
As Donald said, 1 year is the decent lifespan of a high end gpu.

Yes, but as I have said numerous times, and Kwakkel so accurately states, don't count on being able to upgrade from the 8800M GTX to the next generation video card thereby liberating the 8800M GTX for sale on eBay.

Also, once the next generation card comes out you will find demand for the 8800M GTX will diminish substantially.

I wouldn`t quite put it that way, seems to me that a lot of people look for the 7950GTX seing as it is dirt cheap , being replaced by the 8800M GTX. I don`t want to get into prices, but the 7950GTX cannot be made into profit anymore, which makes it all the better to be bought. See my logic?

Problem is common. You should be getting 9000+. Get 167.43 driver, set power profile to High Performance and also check if powermizer is set for max performance on AC, oh, and run everything on AC. Battery will throttle performance, no matter what you do.

The demand isn't really the question here I think. The possible supply is.
And I don't see anyone taking the 8800M out of his $3000 or $5000 notebook (M570RU or D901C) to sell it when
    1) you won't get much because the new gen is out
    2) you can't put the new gen in your desktop
Do the math if you want, but the person who does that, looses big time :)

Of course, if the next gen cards ARE compatible with the current M570RU/D901C, there probably will NOT be a problem: there will always be people who will want to upgrade and can sell their 8800M :)

From the looks of it then, if it will be possible ( highly unlikely this time) to upgrade to a 9th series gpu , I will skip the 8th series alltogether and forget about the hassle.
I was only trying to make an analogy, based on the assumption that the m570ru will be compatible with next gen`s gpus. As noted, just an assumption.

Unless one of us is a fortune teller, then it's impossible to know until it's out. Notebooks require much more specific parts to be able to fit inside the chassis, operate within a certain heat threshold and draw only a certain amount of power. That means the scope of which you're used to in desktop cards is drastically reduced, so predicting for yourself to buy a notebook to upgrade later with next generation cards is totally at your own risk.
