Do you have RAM Speed tests in AIDA64 @ 2133 MHz and 2400 MHz and 2666 MHz so we can see how RAM speed affects performance? at least in synthetic benchmarks that is -

This overclocker's lounge is skewed overwhelmingly in the odds of anyone who has the Clevo P870DM (which is probably the most powerful laptop on the planet yet). Comparing any other laptops against it would be a bit like comparing the top speeds of a Porsche (MacBook Pro), a Lamborghini (P640RE), an F-22 (P650RE) and a Saturn V (P870DM). There's just no comparison at all. I think it'd be fair to throw in some sort of category system of GPUs and CPUs, as well as generations.
It's just plain unfair to compare an i7-4710MQ vs an i7-6700K, even if users of both CPUs are overclockers. Of course the 6700K is going to win.GTVEVO likes this. -

you have a point there.
Firstly, this thread was created to save the actual P870DM thread as it was being filled with overclocking posts / settings / results it took over. So it was a good idea to create this thread.
But how do you suggest we categorize it?
maybe a mod can chime in because as you said, a user with anything less than ta P870DM is not gonna last here due to inferior hardware. -
Spartan@HIDevolution Company Representative
IMHO, we should have a whole overclocking subforum, then make a thread for each notebook and / or CPU/GPU
What do you think @Mr. Fox @Ethrem @toughasnails @brubenstein -
-
That's why the people that have one, have one. There is no room for excuses in love or war. It's not unfair. You get what you bought and then the chips fall where they may. Just think about all of the poor BGA jockeys trudging along on a dead-end street with a disposable turdbook. At least there is an upgrade path for those with sockets and slots. All you have to do next is buy more powerful components to replace the weaker stuff. Having second string performance certainly doesn't stop the AMD fanboys when it comes to benching. What their systems lack in performance they make up in impressive-looking clocks speeds.
Second-fastest is more accurate. For the time being, the Panther/P570WM has it beat in terms of insane CPU brute force with hexacore i7 and octacore Xeon processor awesomeness, but the Sky X9E wins at almost everything else. But, no doubt... 6700K is a very powerful quad when it is not emasculated by a crappy BIOS. Brother @Prema took it from nice to wicked. Without his magic firmware it wouldn't be nearly as amazing. In fact, I might not even want one that much with a stock Clevo BIOS.
Nah, leave it in one. Needs to be all-in benching so there's no place to hide. When people go shopping for a beast, making it easier for them to compare options is a good thing. They either want the fastest or they don't. When they want the fastest, having it all in one thread so they can see how things stack up will remove any guesswork.temp00876, Cerberus, Spartan@HIDevolution and 1 other person like this. -

First - this is neither love, nor war. There's no need to over-dramatise this. It's a simple case of 'everyone wants to overclock, but ranking everyone on the same scale is not fair'. Let's use a real-life example - would you or anyone else accept paying 40% of your salary in income tax in a linear tax system where everyone pays the same, or would you rather a progressive tax system where the less fortunate pay 5% and get tax rebates, and the rich pay 40%? Same case for this.
Yes, we get what we pay for, but we choose to pay a bit less because we can make do.
Many of those 'BGA jockeys' with 'disposable turdbooks' can:
- make their turdbooks last half a decade, whereas I've heard horror stories of desktop components failing within days of purchase... precisely because the latter are upgradeable.
- make money out of those 'turdbooks' - developers using Macs or ordinary Windows notebooks make their living using those 'turdbooks' to develop programs, create media or better, make millions selling apps. I would not discount a notebook or any computer at all solely on its hardware. My dad uses a no-frills Dell issued by his employer to create presentations, type away emails and get work done - all for million-dollar projects for the place he works for. Their IT department doesn't care that the notebook has a Core iSomething or 64 GB DDR4 2133 MHz RAM, because they don't need it.
Sure, more powerful hardware is better, but some people can't afford that, or can afford it but don't want to waste money on a massive fire-breathing monster when they feel a Core i5 suffices, or a GTX 970M suffices.
As for @Phoenix's question:
For CPUs: the most arbitrary scale would be, I believe, by the TDP as stated by Intel. Make categories of:
- 0 - 5 W
- 5 - 15 W
- 15 - 25 W
- 25 - 35 W
- 35 - 45 W
As for GPUs, ranking them by their Fire Strike scores, or within each GPU type (like only 980Ms against each other, only 860Ms against each other, only Fury Xs against each other, etc.) would be the best. Exactly like how 3DMark does it. Plainly because it makes no sense to compare a 860M with a 980. They cater to different markets, both GPUs are meant for different loads.Last edited: Mar 19, 2016 -

So, where's the problem? It is totally fair to have all the numbers in one place for easy reference. It's an accurate comparison of components. That "love and war" this was a figure of speech, of course.
I'm not sure what taxes have to do with this, but to answer that question I think fairness means everyone, individuals and businesses, pay exactly the same percentage... a flat tax. Paying less because you are poor and more because you are rich sucks and is totally unfair. Fairness is totally subjective no matter how you slice it, and those with less often act like they deserve to be given a break or receive special treatment.
Making do with what one has is totally fine as long as the owner is satisfied with it, but scores are scores. Keeping them separated doesn't change the scores. Grading on the curve seems silly to me, just like giving trophies to kids on losing soccer teams for "participation" so they don't feel bad is ludicrous. But, that's just my opinion. I know there are others out there.temp1147462323 and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -

Precisely - but everyone wants to overclock, even those with BGA components. I personally have a BGA GTX 860M which has been boosted by some 10% after an OC. I wasn't the one who dragged in the BGA-vs-upgradeable issue. With all due respect - it was @Mr. Fox. He always drags in the BGA issue. There's no point, because Intel and Nvidia aren't exactly going to bother about one sort-of well-known guy in a relatively obscure forum blasting BGA's cons. Just suck it up and move on. If @Mr. Fox can rally the entirety of something like /r/pcmasterrace to support his cause, I'll sign the book - I swear.
My only thing is that calling this an 'Overclocker's Lounge' when it caters to mostly people with overpowered laptops is misleading. I'll say it again - e veryone can and those who are tech-savvy want to overclock - no matter what components they have. Hell, even smartphones can be OCed (with sometimes strange results, of course). I just feel this thread should cater to different platforms without everything being gauged against the very best. As to people looking for the best - that's obvious, for ****'s sake - the P870DM and the P570WM (thanks @Mr. Fox for telling me). No need to parade around saying 'hurr durr look at me I got this powerful laptop' when everyone can see for themselves.
Ah, there we go - the famous equality vs equity debate. Are you really sure (in a hypothetical scenario) you could stand the government taking away $400 of your cash, leaving $600, when you only earn $1000 a month? I honestly believe the pain is a lot less when the government takes $8000 and one still has $12000 left to spend. -

The point is here bro, sometimes people even me, post an overclock result or a benchmark and we are happy, even if its lower than others, its just to show our accomplishment and how proud we are. Noone ever told me "Hey Phoenix, why are you so happy about your score my 4.8 GHz 6700K smokes you" nope, we do it for fun and everyone is enjoying the ride.
when I post an overclock result, sometimes the overclocking gurus just comment and say "good job" noone disses anyone else's' hardware.

Sure, no one said one trolled the other when it came to scores. All I was saying was that it'd make more sense to compare similar hardware with respect to each other rather than looking everywhere for a (for example) an OCed W230SS, and being disappointed when every post is about the P870DM... To give an analogy - it's like someone with a Honda Civic going to a typical car mod forum looking for other people who tuned their Civic's engine, but finding, to their dismay, that everyone there has a Subaru when the title of the thread was 'Car Engine Tuners' Thread'. Hope you guys get my point...
Sigh. I did not want to argue, guys. Believe me...

Yup, absolutely certain... no doubt in my mind at all. 10% is 10% whether its product is a difference in taxes or benchmark scores. But, this is a silly comparison and we have to avoid political debate according to forum rules. This is has potential of going off topic with that kind of analogy. Maybe we can think of another example.
How about using a set of scales? If one of two objects weighs more than the other, is it unfair that they are not the same? Is it OK to add weight to the lighter side until the scale balances and then declare they are equal?

Guys c'mon! Please keep it simple as it is: EVERYONE is invited to share his/her results in this thread. If someone is able to squeeze every bit of his 860m and make it run as a 965m, then it is either impressive like achieving 5Ghz with a 6700k!
I'm not a hardcore overclocker because I lack the knowledge. But I enjoy every comment posted here and learn as much as I can! I don't care being the best/the worst, we are here to help each other out, aren't we?
We should honor the attempt to encourage people to squeeze the most out of their rig's, regardless of their of their i5's/7's, etc.
If it helps we can rename this thread in "Phoenix and Panthers" exclusive Overclockers thread, but it shouldn't be necessary, right?

Yeah, sometimes companies make bad decisions. The Titan is a nice example of good intentions paired with poor judgment.
Exactly! The only shame is what one decides to wear on their own. That's why I recently posted this score. It's not as good as 580M, 7970M, 8970M, 680M, 780M, 980M SLI or 200W 980 powered machines, but compared to other 6990M CF machines, it's close to the top of the ladder when you do a quick search on 3dmark.com and it netted me a few more points on hwbot.org to boot. It would be unreasonable to expect it to run like 980M SLI, but I can still be proud that is excels in its own league. And, if anyone wants to know if it is worth the upgrade, the numbers are there for examination. It's not unfair... it is what it is... nothing more or less.

You can always start your own overclocking thread...
Well that is not totally true. The P570WM3 is king unless you have a 980 Sli machine that we don't know about? The P570WM3 is king with all 980M benchmarks as well as SLI vs 1 980. Now it does lose in drive benchmarks...
Edit: Now on a single vs single gpu and sli vs sli, it would lose, but that's because no one makes a 980 desktop card for the P570WM3...
Again. Best to make you own benchmarking thread and then you can make and set all the rules in your favor to win.
Sounds like you need to take your 10 percent over clock to h and r block and get your money back a bit faster since they seem to be taking more than your worth. Then maybe a better notebook at tax time?
This always comes up when people choose to not spend top dollar on parts. Then try to pawn it off as something else. Why oh why is this in every single thread on here or in any other forum? Like a broken record.Last edited: Mar 19, 2016 -

And have thousands of overclocking threads, one per user? I don't mind, since I don't moderate this forum
You want to give me six thousand bucks so that I can buy myself a tricked-out P870DM? Or better, buy the notebook for me and ship it over in a nice gift box? Or even better, buy me an entire data processing centre so I can enjoy X-Plane 10 at max settings at 10800x19200p? The superiority complex that you guys have, I swear...
Who said I wanted to win? Not me... Once again, superiority complex. I see it all the goddamn time with desktop users, and now it's spilled over to NBR because our notebooks got, guess what - too powerful.
And all I asked for was a categorisation system for owners of less-powerful notebooks. FFS...

Simple answer. NO.
Exactly why there are no world records either.
Second answer. I did that already. and it was just way to many changes that had to be made every single day for people at the bottom of the list moving 2 points and the next nearest person is 600 points away. In a category with two people who have the exact same hardware out of the entire list.
Big waste of time.
Now if I had a 860M i sure as heck would run it up for some numbers and get to bragging about it like there was no tomorrow. You know, like you want to do, but unfortunately no one wants to give me a low budget notebook to bench, so I don't have one. -

Bingo. You (or someone else) could've said this at the very beginning, i.e.:
and kept it simple. We would've avoided one and a half pages with of rants for/against BGA, broke people, antelope meat, etc, etc. Then I would've jacked my system up, run some tests, posted scores; we would have had a nice chat about how I could improve (or otherwise) and moved on with our lives... The hostility that people with outsize specs have against people with relatively low-end specs is somewhat disturbing. It's just a godforsaken computer, for heaven's sake. -

Perhaps a more appropriate analogy would be weight divisions such as those used in boxing/marital arts/wrestling. So for example, we could have lightweight, middleweight, and heavyweight classes.
Note: I'm not advocating for this split (personally, I have no opinion one way or the other), but at least weight classes seems like a better analogy than tax rates. -
