I have my other laptop in my hands and have reinstalled windows 10 pro on my OCZ RD 400 drive and updated drivers except CCC. All went pretty flawless with no error's or blue screens on the install. Will be playing some BF1 and doing some testing over the next few days and see if I seemed to make a difference or not. The only test I have run so far is cinebench r15 which after a few runs appears to be the same at around 900 (4.3x4), 4.2 cache.

Edit: I did boot up BF1 for a few minutes and will definitely have to run max fans in that game temps were very high without those fans running.

@Meaker@Sager I sent Sager a email a few days ago about the newest bios (1.05.08) but have not heard back from them. They may be backed up but are you all sending this bios off to customers yet that ask for it? Thanks!

Getting GT: Fuses limit when overclocking, this is with all power limit upped in XTU and PL2 disabled. Getting a very slight throttle as a result.

    Wonder why this is happening?

God all this talk about Kabby and here I'm rooting for Skylake EX ( just -E),

Gimme a reason to hold out and I will, I won't be home till next September anyways.

also... @Georgel saw ur avatar and sig, if you're one of the artists behind that then nice to see another fellow artist in the tech community o/

Well, so far we haven't heard anything about a panther replacement and skylake-x won't drop until 2H 2017, whereas Kaby is more of a microcode update and fine tuning the firmware. Because of that, the DMs have one more upgrade, which with a delidded Kaby will give astronomical performance for a laptop!

But, if you have haswell-e/broadwell-e, except for the 10-core B-E, the next minor performance upgrade may come with Ryzen. But, not really worthwhile for a huge performance jump, so waiting for skylake-X (or Kaby-X if on a budget (only quad core) as it well be on the Kaby lake chipset for the enthusiast platform, and don't ask why Intel is changing from E to X, not sure other than them moving 2-8cpu Xeons to a different socket than the enthusiast and Xeon workstation to utilize the generational cadence instead of the E7 2xxx,4xxx,8xxx v.x for servers) makes sense.

But getting a potential 4.8 everyday clock is why they are excited...

Thank you, but I didn't draw my avatar. My level as an artist is lower, just learning how to use a drawing tablet out of fun!

I'm a writer and programmer, not so much of an artist.

Glad to see people passionate by art on tech forums though!

I would be glad with a 4.4 or 4.5 for daily usage, 4.8 is already icing on the cake :D

Don't sell yourself short! Writing and programming is an art! Without that, we wouldn't have any games which we love on occasion (or 3D benchmarks which futuremark hasn't been able to get right in many, MANY releases!)!

Meanwhile, you're getting there on learning to tune...

You have a few people to get past first.
And using windows 10 ain't gonna help in that aspect. Nor are your temps trying to bench 200+ and also what you know plays a pretty big roll as well, but it's a definite start!

As to looking at it from a "gamers" point of view. You are perfectly fine.

I am not sure if CCC was the cause of this but after the reinstall as a comparison my highest score with the factory install and CCC was 17,737 in Firestrike and with the exact same settings on the first run I scored 18,193. Not a huge difference but it is a difference.

I use the "gaming" perspective because that is based off of a constant fps average.
We are all within 20 fps for and the lowest average is still above 120fps. So that is basically the same thing. In my book at least.
I'm sure not going to be running around in GTA 5 talking about..I get 200+ FPS while getting killed by some kid on a netbook with bga everything. :D That's for sure. And he or she is doing 60 fps.

I guess because coming from my machine hitting 80's at stock without a delid and the Vapor Chamber I am just happy and content with 60. I realize there is throttling that goes on as temps go up but yes from a gaming perspective the 60's are wonderful. Will never hit those low temps unless I go hang out in the cold garage and that is not going to happen. :)

    Thank you!

Tunning a CPU is more fun than I thought it would be at first :D

And you're very right, writing and programming are essential parts of games, like all the other parts. Every single part of the game (music, visuals, writing, programming, effects, planning, idea) is essential to create the final product, every single talent is valuable and builds up to the whole!

Literally sitting on temps that touch 90C even 95C with fans on absolute max....

You'll find your moment. We all start at some point, but I'm at the point where I would need to buy an AC machine since in Romania those are more or less a rarity.

If I had one, I would probably place it in the room I'm working and place my laptop directly on it all the time to keep the temps down :D

Come everyone to enjoy these lovely temperatures. -3C here in my garage when my girlfriend doesn't turn on the damn heat, lol. I got the Fox AK sitting right in the corner and it idles at 26C with automatic fans. I think it is due for a repaste, I've been moving it around too much.

Go outside, bench and grill in a back/side yard or balcony!!! Or seal off one room and open a window (although that will affect your heating bill, not as recommended)! Get creative... Lol!

But the more you learn on both adjusting settings and applying TIM, pads, shims (if needed), etc., you can keep working on getting those temps down...

Just remember, CLU has a low temp of 10C! If you're idling there or lower, consider a traditional paste (gelid extreme or icd), then reapply CLU after the benching...

It looks like there are electrically conductive pads:

    Q-Pad II
    http://www.bergquistcompany.com/thermal_materials/sil_pad/q-pad-II.htm

    Features and Benefits
    • Thermal impedance: 0.22°C-in2/W (@50 psi)
    • Maximum heat transfer
    • Aluminum foil coated both sides
    • Designed to replace thermal grease
Q-Pad II is a composite of aluminum foil coated on both sides with thermally / electrically conductive Sil-Pad rubber. The material is designed for those applications in which maximum heat transfer is needed and electrical isolation is not required. Q-Pad II is the ideal thermal interface material to replace messy thermal grease compounds.

Q-Pad II eliminates problems associated with grease such as contamination of reflow solder or cleaning operations. Unlike grease, Q-Pad II can be used prior to these operations. Q-Pad II also eliminates dust collection which can cause possible surface shorting or heat buildup.

    And, of course:

Coollaboratory Liquid MetalPad Thermal Grease Pad for GPU & CPU 3-Pack - NEW
    https://www.amazon.com/Coollaboratory-Liquid-MetalPad-Thermal-Grease/dp/B001CXNSU8
    • Liquid MetalPad for excellent CPU and GPU cooling
    • Contains 3x CPU and 3x GPU cooling pads
    • 100% metal melts with heat
    • Includes cleaning kit
    Probably lots more...
    https://www.google.com/search?q=ele...+pads&oq=electrically+conductive+thermal+pads

Laird Technologies - Thermal Supplier Page Tgon™ 800 Series
Laird Technologies’ electrically and thermally conductive interface pad
    http://www.digikey.com/us/en/ph/LairdTechnologies/Tgon800series.html

" Laird Technologies' Tgon 800 is a high performance, cost effective thermal interface material. Tgon 800 is ideal where electrical contact and thermal transfer are desired. Its unique grain-oriented, plate-like structure provides a high thermal conductivity of 240 W/mK in the X-Y plane and 5 W/mK through the Z-axis.

The Tgon 800 series is available in 12 x 18-inch (305mm x 457mm) sheets. It is also available with proprietary pressure sensitive adhesive on one side. This adhesive coating is one of the thinnest available at 0.5 mil, minimizing the impact on thermal performance."

Aye very much so, I started getting into drawing to keep myself from being banned here, so I'd just literally DRAW it out for people cuz popupbooks tell better stories than words given some of the people we had to deal with lol... lots of people here can vouch for it. I've been meaning to create a VN based on my comic, was looking @ ren'py mostly. Keep at it though you'll notice an enormous improvement over time. Trolls here pushed me a bit so I have them to thank for my kick start <3

Currently working on a piece atm (cropping to prevent any NSFW issues )

But yeah def improved since... Looking forward to my next NBR weekly Lol.

Also holy crap this thread builds fast LOL, I'm still on IVY-E desktop wise so figured Skylake E would deliver me to the realm of 5ghz easily given their current IMC, but we'll see. That + also since intel is making their move to graphite soon. ( By soon I mean probably 2 years from now ) since they're at the end for our current architecture limits anyways. I'm really looking forward to volta as well, and glad I didn't make the early jump to Pascal.

Has that calmed down at all or are things still kinda heating up ?

Idling in the 20s is fine, even if ambient is low, most likely. When I was idling at 5-10C is when it compromised, but my gpu was lower and the combined heatsink of the p770zm, so... Also remember, the heatpipes are water, so idle needs above zero if extended period or you can burst!

Edit: remember, you are thermal cycling and water takes awhile to freeze, so the pipe thing isn't an issue while actively benching. The thermal paste is!

5GHz will obviously depends on cooling. I know you do water, but chilled? Right now, 36% of broadwell-e hit [email protected] for the 6900K, 25% of the 6950X decacore do that. Considering kabylake-x will only be quad core on the platform, skylake may have the voltage improvements of Kaby, or it might not! So try to judge off of that whether you think you'll hit 5 with your rig or planned improvements and whether you want the 8 or 10 core variant. Also, graphite is pushed. All 2D materials will come in the generations starting at 7 or 5nm using EUV. Not even cannonlake at 10nm will get EUV, most likely. Ice lake and tiger lake may. They have moved to 18 months for release, so plan on not having that until after our around 2020. Also, on ice or tiger, they are using FIVR like haswell/broadwell.

Volta looks promising, but hasn't been talked about much with Pascal out and desktop equivalent for the laptops (and learning to hone it with the boost 3.0)...

Edit: looking forward to the cartoon.

How can you stay for a longer period of time, or long enough to bench properly? :D

Art looks good, I'm curious how the story will turn out!

Ren'py is a very good software to program, and since it's based on python, it is really easy to learn and use. Very strong if you play enough with it. Need processing power when you begin to debug and you run 10-50 instances of ren'py to debug things.

That moment when you get a strong computer but you play Visual Novels considerably more than any graphic excessive game .

Actually this is something, but Deus Ex sequel and Dishonored sequel were released and they had pretty good stories n the last releases

Well, first you buy a ball warmer and a pair of pants that are roomy enough to fit it. Maybe some thermal too. Try not to pee or it may be a shocking experience if electric.

Or you can get those hand warmer pouches, break the chemical, and shove that down your pants. After sticking your balls in the snow to cool off, you won't be worried about the cold!!!

Nothing wrong with that at all, but you were talking about throttling and ec's and not enough power. And my answer to that was you need to be below a certain temp if you want to keep up with people with high benchmarks scores. As to every day activities your temps are fine.

    Really?
We are talking about two different things
I'm talking about benching with forced low temps while your talking about your laptop sitting on your desk in a decently heated room. Way different. No way your going to be getting below 40C any time soon im afraid. So that bounds you by your environment. At least he is a bit closer with 60C....

And we are talking about the gpu not the cpu.

The mating of heatplate to CPU / GPU aren't guaranteed to be insulting, whether with paste or pad.

I don't think I've come across a situation where the CPU / GPU and heatplate require electrical isolation.

I have come across situations where you do want to isolate components with an insulation pad - where the thermal characteristics aren't important.

The whole runny shorting "droplets of doom" from Liquid Metal Paste's is a bit of a unique situation.

Metal Pads that make good contact and have good thermal conductivity, that don't move when applied, would be the best of both worlds - metal thermal conductivity without the motive side effects of Liquid Metal droplets.

The Liquid Metal Pad's, as they melt and settle cause some worry, but maybe the construction of them limits the mobility of the Liquid Metal?

Cut the conductive pads to fit, and make sure they don't make contact with electronic component leads along it's path, cut notches if required. :)

That looks like a laptop throne!

That makes much much more sense

Still seems like a lot of work to get the GPU down to that temperature under full load

Yes, I can see the confusion, but until one can understand how pascal works. The confusion will only widen.

As to the 2011 ac setup. I'm going to guess that it took less time to setup that up, than for you to draw that girl. :)

Opening the box and connecting mine to an AC outlet was so difficult, and the fact that it has wheels on the bottom makes it even more intimidating, LOL.

Using only the fan feature without the AC part turned on blows such a tremendous non-stop volume of air all over everything that doing that alone makes a huge improvement. And everything gets cooled, not just processor cores. Every nook and cranny gets a steady stream of fresh air.

The internal fans only help cool the parts with a heat sink, and even then only when the fans are running.

And my BABY U3 mod with 3x 120mm 12v Vardar 3000rpm fans, looks more like a heat oven compared to your only fans blowing AC unit :D

Wish I had a prema bios, my garage is 22f so I could sit on my work bench in garage and get some benchmarking done lol.

    Conclusion

    1. Fan Mod Notepal U3 Plus Decision whether quieter or louder - 12 V witch AC Power Adapter extern and Fan Controller or USB 5V To 12V and Fan Controller and/or change fan to 12V 140mm FAN
    2. CPU Delid and Heatsink Repaste CPU Delid with 8@auer or other - Selection paste - ICD, Kyronaut, MX4, Conductonaut, Liquid Metal, Liquid Ultra or other
    3. Perhaps Fill the Gap Heatsink CPU - which CLU / Kyro??? - or not
    4. Repaste GPU and / or WLP around the GPU then Liquid Metal
    5. Bottom Case Removing the superfluous light metal parts = Air circulation better = So more air comes into the notebook
    6. And or not Attaching Copper cooler/chips/plates
    7. Copper cooler/chips/plates and no thermal pad of the gpu = Not electrically conductive
    8. Understanding Operation Vapor Chamber if available
    9. Undervolt / Overvolt Throttlestop to test CPU
    10. Undervolt CPU and or Memory (no Intel XTU!) And when Prema Bios then no CCC or overvolt CPU and overclock to the highest stabil clock
    11. MSI Afterburner GPU Undervolt Lower Values curve or curve overclock with higher values
    12. Prema BIOS/EC maybe even for Kaby Lake - Load from different SSD/OS - Give another light - undervolt/overvolt or overclock/overvolt
    13. Prema VBIOS GTX 1080 overclock memory and/or clock
14.Overclock and test stability AIDA Stress Test and/or test WPrime and/or and/or test with games - Notify your setting and undervolt/overvolt setting for a stable clock - Use RivaTuner in MSI Afterburner or standalone install to show the values of temperature of CPU/GPU

    Not so serious advice:
    15. Tropical Cooling system = Mr.Fox and Johnksss @ iBUYPOWER  :)
    16. Get the hole in the bottom case and install the external radiator or water cooling system :p
    17. Install the notebook in the refrigerator
    18. Nitrogen cooling as with the overclockers with 7GHz on a core attach 8 @ auer like
    19. Buy another notebook :p
20.New Heatsink for CPU over the original and Mounting with copper clamp

    No risk no fun!
This is not a guide - guarantee loss possible.
    Ask your reseller!

Or, spend a few hundred dollars on a Playstation or XBOX (or buy both and an average 1080p monitor or TV for less than the cost of a BGA gaming turdbook) if playing games is the only thing that matters.

To my relief, I must confess that I have operated overclocking several hours yesterday evening - to see with how much overclocking I can also gamble.
At 4.6 GHz, the temperature was already 75 degrees Celsius at room temperature of 22.3 degrees Celsius.
4.8 GHZ are stable on a core and the other cores with 4.6 GHZ.
Perhaps it is possible to reach 4,9 GHZ?
For this 4,8 GHZ I naturally have to adjust + 50mv to all cores and the Cache Ratio lowered to 38.
Stable also run 4.7 GHZ, but the temperature rises in the stress test to just over 80 degrees C.
If I want temperatures only just over 60 degrees Celsius at the above room temperature - then I take 4.4 GHZ on all cores.
Therefore, I write down all the values in a table, so I have to influence the individual settings at any time besides the possibility of the profiles.
I will post some results at times.
    Must first test still further.
    It must be stable.
I had during the many test many many BlueScreens.
In the end, this will pay off - if I have defined all values stably.
Then I can afterwards over the Prema BIOS the values take over. :)
