yeah looks like the limit now, tried going all in with letting the card go wild, varied from 2063mhz (1.05v) to yeah about 1975mhz (1.0v) but as you can see Power limits, vram memory limit seems +625mhz but didn't notice any improvements, so i guess i'm in the error correction area, going from +500 to +600 resulted in quite a bump
edit: CPU still at 4.5ghz, i guess i could do 17300 when going all in with CPU to 4.7ghz but didn't try ocing above 4.5ghz yet.

That's the RAM I should have got. But hopefully a BIOS mod in the future might correct the timing for my Corsairs. And yes -180mv under-volt on both. As for the IGPU; Like what @Papusan said. And just to confirm the IGPU is definitely disabled as I can only connect a maximum of 4 monitors into the P870KM1-Gcj_miranda23 likes this. -

@Mr. Fox
You're good friends with @Prema
would you be able to ask him a question for me?
Do you think, for a proper sum of money (like a few hundred dollars), if he would be willing to look at the 7RE/7RF identification issue on the GT73VR when a 1070 is inserted (1080=7RF for 330W limit, 1070 is 7RE for 230W cancer limit) so i can avoid the MSI cancer 230w power limit? (e.g. the GT73VR switching to 7RF mode by being tricked that a 1080 is installed)? (that's only if Svet is unable to help. I already contacted Svet and have to wait until he's free).
Godspeed and keep the BGAcancer away. Now that I know how to swim, my next laptop will be a premamagic Evoc powerbook!leftsenseless likes this. -

I cant do that right now. Fixed income sucks and i just bought the GT73VR two months ago.
My next upgrade is to upgrade my 8 year old 2600k and get an X299 and 7820X 8 core intel CPU.
After that, then save money slowly and wait for the next good laptop to come out.
But I would gladly donate to @Prema for his help. Giving $200 to @Prema or Svet is better than spending $1,000 on a MXM 1080 cardleftsenseless likes this. -

I hope we see full size desktop RAM in Clevo laptops as they are also 1.2v. They already have desktop CPU and GPU installed they might as well chuck some desktop RAM in there too. Surely a little width will be added on the board but not length wise, as they can be laid back flat

Lol, you can only overclock because of some of my work. -
Hope you guys enjoy it. There is an interview in Stephen's OWNorDISOWN channel with @iunlock as well.
It was nice getting an opportunity to put in a plug for @Prema and the Partner Shops and acknowledge @Johnksss@iBUYPOWER for his awesome influence in my overclocker upbringing. Both of them are great friends that have made my life better and more interesting, and I really appreciate them.
If you are referring to the influence and input you have had with Sager and Clevo and getting them to loosen up a little bit on the stock BIOS to make their products more capable than they used to be, we really appreciate that, Brother @Meaker. They're now the best they ever have been in that respect, and I trust you had something major to do with that.Last edited: Jul 15, 2017 -

Just received my R4, and jesus christ this thing feels premium.
I paid $1000 for it, and boy, does it make my P870DMx systems feel like clunky toys. BGA or not, this build quality is plain amazing.Papusan, hmscott, TBoneSan and 1 other person like this. -

LOL Dat booty.
Yeah i was wondering about that. But at least they are moving in the right direction, unlike Clevo. Going to take this baby apart tomorrow, and repaste

My friend's R4 with 1070 on factory paste stays around mid-high 60s on the GPU on load, I was quite surprised. Let's see how your 1060 is cooled.

Ill post results in a little while, transferring my data over from the DM1 and then gotta clone the W10 install onto my larger SSD. Best $1k i have ever spent.hmscott likes this.

They used to be moving the right direction. There is, and never will be, anything right about BGA filth.
But, yeah... Alienware build quality has always been second to none since Dell bought Alienware and stopped using Clevo as the ODM. I really miss the metal, but it doesn't make any difference how nicely the turdbooks are built... ain't going there. Period. End of discussion. So the original Alienware laptops were Clevos?
-
-
Before Dell bought Alienware, yes. Alienware and many Dell laptops are made by Compal. Before they went to BGA filth they were awesome and better than anything Clevo had to offer. The move to BGA marked the beginning of their slippery slide into overpriced trashbook obscurity in the land flowing with urine and feces (as opposited to milk and honey).
I guess you have to pick your poison, LOL. I'm tired of all of the nonsense as well, but I'm not willing to allow for any compromises on the BGA feces. If I have to tolerate that crap, then I'll just be done altogether. Not putting up with that worthless cah-cah. It's the computer equivalent a gorgeous blonde she-male spreading terminally contagious STDs. Looks pretty nice until you get up close and have a peek at what's under the hood, then you puke. No point in settling for BGA tranny-book filth when there are better alternatives.
I won't even settle for that if there were no non-BGA alternatives though. I'm not willing to stoop to that level just to have a fancy laptop. I'm on the edge now with Clevo getting away with peddling too much broken crap. As all the BGA alternatives totally unacceptable, I will likely end up begrudgingly giving them up for good and permanently ending my interest in high performance notebooks.Last edited: Jul 15, 2017 -
ROFL
But yeah, i think its mainly because i have 2 Desktops as well along with the DM1 and DM3, makes me not feel as strongly as you do about BGA, but im never spending more than what i just did on them.
DM3 however is my last high end LGA, all i use it for is the occasional benching, and that makes for a very expensive hobby lol. -
Stress Tech Notebook Evangelist
Buying a BGA laptop is like funding terrorism!
A good mechanical keyboard, a lipo battery, 3x mDP 1.4 sockets for a triple G-sync Nvidia Surround setup, a Prema BIOS born with every Clevo and a pyrolytic graphite heatsink (or graphene which is even better) and we'll be living it large
.... BIGTIME

Seems like this is a good price for a thunderbolt eGPU box with a GTX 1070. If the 1070 considered worth 449, then the box is only 150:
Papusan, Scerate, Mr. Fox and 1 other person like this. -
The question is, will the box support a Pascal Titan or 1080 Ti to make it a more attractive geek toy?

They can be used with any GPU, just depends if you are willing to shell out for those cards, for very little gains.Papusan likes this.

haha yeah, still resintalling windows and such, so gonna be a while before i get a baseline. More than that i need to unlock this BIOS. Lets see if the Flash latest, dump, mod, flash using programmer shindig works.iunlock likes this.
-
It should work. I know @svl7 unlocked the BIOS on his Alienware 17 (Ranger/Haswell) and flashed with a programmer because of its Secure Flash cancer. I know it's not even similar in design and different BIOS, but I think you can bypass that firmware signing garbage on anything with the programmer (just guessing). You may not be able to do an in-line flash, but I know pulling the chip is easy-peasy for you.
-
-
Wow, this is SO TRUE. Financially sponsoring of the ethical delinquency of OEMs/ODMs selling filth, LOL.
It's also super funny, and I love the comment for that reason alone.
Yeah, we are all spoiled to the max by his talent and generosity. Awesome man, and amazing skills.
The newer Alienware systems are Aptio BIOS, if I am remembering correctly. That being the case, it may be easier to find information on how to expose the hidden menus. I think tools and information on Insyde BIOS might be harder to come by than AMI/Aptio firmware.
Hopefully, the BIOS chip is out in the open, in an easily accessible spot. That would make things even easier. The M18xR1 and M18xR2 was wide open access under the bottom cover like the 16L13. Not sure where the placed the chip on the machine in question.Stress Tech likes this. -
Are you on discord? Let me know and feel free to give me a call when you open it up.
I think the signature is encrypted to be able to bypass it to make any mods.
Sounds great. Let me know if you have any luck.
::iunlock:: -
Oh yeah, i know how to unlock everything
Just needed confirmation that i cant do a software flash using traditional methods.
End of the day for the repaste , i will be taking the whole this apart along with the motherboard. So the location wont matter at that point.
Yeah. Will hit you up for sure!
Exactly why the manual flashing using a programmer. Just hoping the Encrypted BS doesn't cause issues with that. Mainly because i will be making a dump from the chip and then modding that.
Will keep you posted! -
I would love to see some kind of universal hack tool released to destroy that feature for any/all firmware protection crap. We all know it takes talent and skill to do the stuff that @Prema does, but heck... I'd like to just destroy that idiotic feature on everything just for spite, even running stock firmware. I'd do it to every computer and GPU I could get my hands on "just because" for no reason other than utter contempt for it. The idiots responsible for it need to have a lobotomy with rusty screwdriver.
I need to acquire this knowledge. It would never be a substitute for a proper Prema mod, but I'd unlock the menus on everything just for the hell of it. Like my wife's XPS 15, for example. Absolutely no need for it, but it would still be a way of exercising dominion and demonstrating triumph over evil.Last edited: Jul 15, 2017bloodhawk likes this. -

The box comes with a 450W PSU and is 21.1CM long, so it should be able to fit in a 21CM long Zotac 1080 Ti Mini, lol.
Probably not for extreme overclocking, maybe it's just good for some users that are still using the last-gen GPUs and have thunderbolt port. -
I would just like to say, my week has been hectic, and I've learned a lot. I think getting that article published is possibly one of the best things I've done, for all that has come from it. And I don't even mean opening anyone's eyes; half the comments are telling me they think it's fine. Just... all the stuff I went through as a result of doing it. Been a fantastic experience.
Also Nvidia guys said they want to meet me at GDC or some similar convention and chat.Papusan, Ashtrix, Stress Tech and 4 others like this. -
Ok so another score yesterday i decided to change thermal pads ( mix of 0,5 and 1mm Arctic ones suggest by RZR), lapp the heasink (still no mirror but it is better now) and put fresh TG Kryonaut together with dust clearing.
After this thing i've got 10 degrees lower temps on GPU and was able to OC by 6820HK to 4,1 GHZ "stable" (temps under 90 Celsius degrees). I mean temperature only because power and current limit is still haunting me...
Before i had max stable CPU at 3,8 GHz under 90 degrees.

I thought you were actually talking about cameras for a second there. I was thinking if you are going for the RED stuff then yeah you will be forking out
I have a 3 screw design that works on my small machine, I get even pressure looking at the contact pattern.
Then again I always press down with heatsinks so it wont move any. -

FYI. You may have seen this before... But Siliconlottery have changed from Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra over to Grizzly Conductonaut for their delidding service.
Edit. + They have also blown away use of statistics, aka % that can reach a set clock rate.
I fix it for yoo Meaker
Btw... Try this below. Maybe better temp results with TWOPOD
But, please don't post it
HERE if it works
@hmscott
BTW. Why ask for something Alienware already sell?
They have this in 3 sizes. 13, 15 and 17 inches.
